Somewhere in New Orleans’ Irish Channel, “The Channel” to its residents, Jamie wakes up from nightmares about his time in Afghanistan and gives his baby girl to her grandmother before hopping into a van like any other man heading off to work. And he is on his way to work, but the job site is a bank that he, his brother Mic, and several other ex-Marine buddies are about to rob.
It should be easy for a well-disciplined and heavily armed group of men. Get in, beat the vault code out of the manager, grab the cash and get out before anyone can react. Instead, the cops are waiting for them when they leave the building. The ensuing shootout leaves cops and robbers dead and...

"You've always wanted a warrior's death..." So why not go out shootin'? Brainstorm Media has revealed an official trailer for The Channel, yet another generic action thriller heading to VOD day-and-date this year. The film is from the same filmmaker who made Warhorse One also out this year - William Kaufman. After their bank heist goes wrong, a desperate criminal, his out-of-control brother, and their motley crew of armed ex-marines must escape New Orleans and the determined FBI agent who is pursuing them. Clayne Crawford and Max Martini star as the two criminals on the run. The cast also includes Nicoye Banks, Juliene Joyner, Todd Jenkins, and Paul Rae. Not only is all this derivative, none of this looks good. One more boring guns vs. feds thrillers, only for those still into this kind of movie. // Continue Reading ›...

Netflix debuted a first look at “Inventing Anna,” Shonda Rhimes’ new limited series set to premiere in 2022.
Inspired by Jessica Pressler’s New York Magazine article “How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People,” the series follows Vivian Kent (Anna Chlumsky), a journalist investigating the case of Anna Delvey (Julia Garner), the German heiress and Instagram celebrity who broke into New York’s social scene to make friends and then steal their money. As Vivian questions whether Anna is anything more than a con woman, the two begin to develop a love-hate bond. Arian Moayed, Katie Lowes, Alexis Floyd, Anders Holm , Anna Deavere Smith, Jeff Perry, Terry Kinney and Laverne Cox also star.
The first look photos show Anna at both high and low points — enjoying herself while dressed in designer fashion and being visited by Vivian in jail.
Rhimes serves as creator and showrunner. Writers include Matt Byrne,...

Passion River Films and 8 Above are teaming on the U.S. release of The Disrupted, the feature documentary debut of Sarah Colt, the Emmy-winning director of PBS’ American Experience docs about Walt Disney and Henry Ford, as well as The Polio Crusade and the Native American series We Shall Remain.
The Disrupted, a look at rising income inequality in the U.S. that follows a farmer, a factory worker and an Uber driver, is now set to hit 20 virtual cinemas on September 25, followed by a digital bow October 13.
“No matter what race, ethnicity, sex, or creed you come from, the subjects from The Disrupted represent all of us who have ever needed to make our own living in America,” Passion River’s Mat Levy said. “There has never been a more crucial and timely film about the compound struggles we are all facing to achieve the ‘American Dream.’ We are...

Fox Searchlight is no stranger to the Oscar game, but the speciality distributor entered fresh terrain this season when it acquired a pair of short films out of the Toronto International Film Festival. “Birdie” and “Feathers” have both received awards-qualifying runs, and the move is particularly notable for “Feathers,” which stands a good chance at being one of the major films about the black experience released at the height of awards season.
Award-winning filmmaker and Sundance Institute Feature Film fellow A.V. Rockwell’s short is a love letter to black boys, the adverse psychological effects of racism, and how to heal those wounds in modern society. The film strikes a welcome humanitarian note, and deserves to lead the pack in the weeks leading up to the final list of contenders in the live action short film race.

I initially intended to attend last night’s screening of Spare Change, at the ongoing New York International Latino Film Festival – a film I alerted you all to on this blog. Alas, last minute scheduling changes altered my plans.
Luckily, a few of you informed me that you would be attending the screening, which was preceded by 2 short films (Smell The Coffee & When It Rains); naturally, I had to inquire about the possibility of a review from each attendee, to post on this blog (something I was planning to do myself), and I received one response, from Alece Oxendine, a Film Studies Masters Candidate at Columbia University’s School of the Arts.
Alece wasn’t much impressed with everything she saw, as you will read below (and if anyone else who was present for the event would like to share their thoughts as well – whether challenging Alece’s review, or...

13 years ago, Matt Damon managed to shoot himself into the A-list thanks to writing partner Ben Affleck, and collaboration Good Will Hunting. Or so he thought. Despite critical acclaim, and an Academy Award for the screenplay, Damon’s door wasn’t exactly being beaten down. He picked up some big parts here or there, but was struggling to make the big breakthrough to solid A-list. He was dogged by the label of Ben Affleck’s sidekick, and maybe also by that ill advised public break-up. You know the one.
It wasn’t until Steven Soderbergh picked up the phone and offered Damon a part in Ocean’s Eleven that his career really took off. It was during production of Ocean’s that Damon agreed to take on the role of Jason Bourne in the Bourne Identity. The movie proved popular, and grew into a series. "Green Zone" will not arrive until March 12, but a premiere in anticipation for its theatrical release has been held in the Big Apple on February 25. Among those gracing the red carpet for the celebration were Matt Damon and Brendan Gleeson.
Wearing a formal tux, Matt came to the AMC Loews Lincoln Square for the premiere along with his wife Luciana Barroso who looked gorgeous in a blue one-shoulder. Unlike Matt who had a companion by his side, Brendan arrived solo like his many other castmates Nicoye Banks, Amy Ryan, Khalid Abdalla and Jason Isaacs.
Director Paul Greengrass was also spotted attending the event. Other celebrities showing up at the Thursday event included Beth Ostrosky Stern, Andrew McCarthy, Julia Stiles and Howard Stern.

The brand new European trailer has been released for Paul Greengrass‘ latest offering, Green Zone. The film stars Matt Damon, Jason Isaacs, Greg Kinnear, Amy Ryan, Antoni Corone and Nicoye Banks and invades UK theatres from 12th March 2010.
United 93 director Paul Greengrass explores the aftermath of the Iraq invasion in this feature adaptation of author Rajiv Chandrasekaran’s literary exposé of the same name. A one-time Baghdad bureau chief of the Washington Post, Chandrasekaran was present as American forces attempted to set up a provisional government on the grounds surrounding former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s opulent palace. The resulting governing body, according to critics, existed in a bubble so far removed from the grim realities of the Iraq War that it failed to properly assess the needs of the people. In this fictional thriller set during the U.S.-led occupation of Baghdad, director Greengrass and screenwriter Brian Helgeland...

Photo: Universal Pictures Yahoo has debuted the first look trailer at Green Zone, a film set in the chaotic early days of the Iraqi War when no one could be trusted and every decision could detonate unforeseen consequences.
The film was previously considered to be a potential Oscar contender until it was moved to March 12, 2010, which means it will be looking at the 2011 Oscars for any award love, but it first has the "I don't want to watch a war movie" audience to contend with.
Green Zone reteams director Paul Greengrass with his Jason Bourne franchise star Matt Damon who plays Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller as he leads his team of Army inspectors to find weapons of mass destruction believed to be stockpiled in the Iraqi desert. The thriller also stars Amy Ryan, Greg Kinnear, Antoni Corone and Nicoye Banks.
