You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone more attractive to an anglophile. With gaunt, angular features and a proper aristocratic accent, Peter Cushing could just as easily sell you a first-edition Charles Dickens novel as he could read a line of dialogue. Inserting those proper English characteristics into tales of bloodthirsty creatures is part of what makes Hammer films so entertaining. In the case of Val Guest’s 1957 creature feature, The Abominable Snowman, those admirable characteristics are also integral parts of the plot.
The Abominable Snowman follows Dr. John Rollason (Peter Cushing) on a botanical expedition in the Himalayas. On his journey, Rollason is approached by Dr. Tom Friend (Forrest Tucker) who, along with Ed Shelley (Robert Brown), Andrew McNee (Michael Brill), and Kusang (Wolfe Morris), is in search of the mythical Yeti that is claimed to inhabit the mountain. Rollason’s wife, Helen (Maureen Connell), is convinced that he...

Hundreds of mourners gathered in Evesham, N.J., yesterday evening to commemorate the life of Christina Grimmie -- the 22-year-old YouTube musician and Voice contestant who was fatally shot during a meet-and-greet with fans over the weekend. Mayor Robert Brown, close friends, pastors, and Grimmie’s brother, Marcus -- who is credited with tackling her assailant and thereby preventing any further injuries -- spoke at the emotional gathering.
"She was arms wide open,” Marcus said of the way in which Grimmie unknowingly greeted her killer, according to the Courier-Post. “She had no idea.”
“She loved this town, she loved this state, she loved singing, she loved the Lord, and she loved me, and she was just my baby sister," he added, according to Billboard. Marcus also thanked Adam Levine, Grimmie’s coach on The Voice, who offered to pay for her funeral, as well as Selena Gomez, whose stepfather was Grimmie’s manager, and who had tearfully paid tribute to her longtime friend onstage at a recent concert.

Toronto — Anna Kendrick is giving me a look that says, “We are so not doing that again.” For the second time in two weeks, I’ve now stood up from an interview and mistakenly deleted the audio file.* Unlike Jon Stewart in Telluride, however, I have now mentioned this to Kendrick in some bizarre attempt for sympathy (or, perhaps, trying to laugh it off to myself). In any event, she needn’t have worried. She’s got a busy day ahead of her without me in the mix and this is where those veteran reporter skills come in handy now and then. A mad dash to the next venue and you jot down as much as you can remember. In this case, sadly, without the funny quotes. *Not sure if Apple updated the program on the iPhone, but I’m 100% considering going back to old school recorders. More annoying to transcribe,...

It’s no surprise that Kelli O’Hara and Steven Pasquale, stars of The Bridges of Madison County (running at Broadway’s Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre through May 18), lit up when asked about their go-to karaoke song and junior high jams. But that’s not where the retro fun ends.
Beyond Joni, Joel, and Journey, see what got them nostalgic from back in the day, then learn what about Bridges makes them happy to go to work eight times a week.
O’Hara and Pasquale, who have stepped into the stage shoes of Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood, understand the inevitable...

Fully realizing its underdog appeal, the cheeky musical A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder slayed the competition this morning with a whopping 10 Tony nominations, including nods for both of its tireless leading men, Jefferson Mays and Bryce Pinkham. Neil Patrick Harris’ return to Broadway after a decade yielded him his first-ever Tony nomination for the celebrated revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which netted an impressive eight nods. (Had it been eligible as a new musical, Hedwig probably would have easily tied Guide, as score and book would have been slam dunks). Trailing these shows with seven...
