The entertainment industry is mourning documentarian Morgan Spurlock.
Spurlock, best known for his Academy Award-nominated documentary Super Size Me, in which he consumed fast food for 30 days to highlight its dangers, died on Thursday at the age of 53 from cancer.
“It was a sad day, as we said goodbye to my brother Morgan,” his brother Craig Spurlock said in a family statement. “Morgan gave so much through his art, ideas and generosity. Today the world has lost a true creative genius and a special man. I am so proud to have worked together with him.”
After the news broke of Spurlock’s death, The Simpsons writer and executive producer Al Jean tweeted, “V v v sad to learn of the passing of Morgan Spurlock. A very talented, funny and brilliant man and a true friend to The Simpsons. A great loss.”
And Alex Gibney remarked simply, “Devastated to hear of...

Steve Albini, a singer and guitarist best known for producing some of the most groundbreaking and influential albums of the alt-rock genre, died of a heart attack at his Chicago recording studio Electrical Audio. He was 61.
Albini’s death and cause of death was confirmed by Taylor Hales of Electrical Audio.
Born July 22, 1962, in Pasadena, Albini moved to the Chicago area after high school to study journalism at Northwestern University. While there, he began writing for local punk rock ‘zines and beginning to record and engineer albums for local bands.
Stubbornly opposed to the larger music industry and its exploitation of artists, Albini formed the Chicago-based band Big Black in 1981, recording the first of several albums, an EP for the Chicago label Ruthless Records, a label he co-managed. That band last until 1987.
From 1987 to 1988, Albini sang and played guitar for Rapeman, named after a Japanese comic book. The short-lived band broke up after one album,...

As Anthony D’Amato preps backstage at Sony Hall in midtown Manhattan, it’s hard not to notice his six-foot height, horn-rimmed glasses — and the name “Amy” in large black letters on the side of his head. It’s not a tattoo, just black liquid eyeliner easy to wash off, but it suits the occasion. In a few minutes, the New Jerseyan and his 12-piece band will walk onstage, take their places beneath an LED sign lit up with Amy Winehouse’s first name and a simulation of her signature beehive,...

With a new BBC radio series now launched, Courtney Love is once again proving the power of the adage “go large or go home.”
In a wide ranging interview with the UK’s Standard today, the former Hole front woman puts forth her take on some of the biggest names in the music industry. Let’s just say, Love bites in deep in the newspaper, to quote from her 1998 tune “Celebrity Skin,” to get her pound of flesh from Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Madonna and recent Coachella headliner Lana Del Rey.
“Taylor is not important,” the People vs. Larry Flint star says of the superstar.
“She might be a safe space for girls, and she’s probably the Madonna of now, but she’s not interesting as an artist,” Love added.
The contrarian opinion on Swift is a big shift from where Love was on the Folklore singer just over two years ago.

In 1991, Nirvana closed out their seminal album Nevermind with a song titled “Something in the Way,” in which Kurt Cobain imagined what life would be like if he lived underneath the Young Street Bridge in his hometown, Aberdeen, Washington. Now, that historic bridge is facing destruction.
Connecting North Aberdeen with the city’s downtown area, the bridge was built in 1956 and inspired Cobain’s classic lyrics, starting with the lines “Underneath the bridge/ tarp has sprung a leak…” In the 30 years since his death, the bridge has become a memorial of sorts for Cobain, and currently sports layers of well-wishes and Nirvana-related graffiti on its walls.
But, as explained by a website created by the city of Aberdeen for the project (via Guerrilla Candy), the bridge is suffering from the effects of “aging and deteriorating bridge conditions.” Now, with a $23 million federal funding grant, the city is hoping to revitalize...

Thirty years after the death of Kurt Cobain, the BBC will air a documentary that it says will “demystify” the Generation X icon and grunge music legend. Moments That Shook the Music: Kurt Cobain, a feature-length documentary directed by John Osborne and produced by Touchdown Films, airs Saturday, April 13, on BBC iPlayer and BBC 2, as part of programming entirely dedicated to the 30th anniversary of Cobain’s death. The Nirvana frontman died on April 5, 1994, in what was ruled a suicide.
“This documentary aims to demystify that moment and tell the story in a direct and accurate way with footage shot by the people who were there,” said Osborne in an interview with the BBC. “Kurt Cobain was the reluctant voice of a generation and his death has left a huge void. The only way to make sense of what happened is to make a testimony that audiences won’t be able to stop watching.

Cash Cobain is leading a procession of young New Yorkers down Irving Place towards Union Square Park in Manhattan. Setting the tone with a slower, orchestral rendition of Nirvana’s Something in the Way, the first trailer for The Batman gave fans a preview of what to expect: a much darker, if not brutal, portrayal of the beloved DC character. With a teaser leading up to the thrilling moment when the music stops, Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight was supposed to be a Batman unlike any other. And it only got better from there.
While a lot of trailers continue the stale practice of turning a popular song into a dark cover, Kurt Cobain’s original song was fully embraced in The Batman trailer.

Everyone basically agrees that John Lennon and Kurt Cobain are two of the biggest names in classic rock. Yoko Ono, on the other hand, had no interest in those comparisons — but Cobain himself did! Here’s a look at why he identified with the “Whatever Gets You Thru the Night” singer so much but wasn’t a fan of Paul McCartney.
Yoko Ono said Kurt Cobain had similarities to John Lennon and so did all rockers

The reporter asked Yoko if she thought Cobain was similar to the “Imagine” singer, especially considering that both of them were so honest in their songs and in interviews. “Don’t waste your time checking...

The Beatles paved the way for many things, including the British ska scene, the mainstream acceptance of psychedelia, and the entire genre of heavy metal music. It’s also arguable a song from The Beatles’ The White Album inspired Nirvana and other grunge bands. Here’s a look at the track and what Kurt Cobain had to say about The Beatles.
The Beatles’ ‘The White Album’ has a dark song that feels like a Nirvana doing blues
The White Album runs the guts of emotions. It’s happy, nervous, angry, lovesick, and sad. One song from the album is both very angry and very sad at the same time: “Yer Blues.” The blues-rock number is one of the hardest-rocking tracks in the Fab Four’s discography. In it, John Lennon unleashes a lot of negative emotions, including a desire to die.
It’s easy to see “Yer Blues” as a predecessor to grunge.

Smells like American Spirits. An unopened pack of cigarettes previously owned by Kurt Cobain is among a batch of recent Nirvana items up for sale via Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills.
At the time of publishing this article, there are 11 bids placed for the pack of American Spirit menthols — the highest bid being $4,000. In the item’s listing, Julien’s writes that the pack was saved by Cobain’s roommate at the Los Angeles Exodus Recovery Center, where he stayed in March of 1994 shortly before his passing. The starting bid was $200. Update: The final auction price was $5,200.
Among Cobain’s other belongings in the Nirvana sale are his stage-played “Skystang” Fender guitar; a sweater; a smashed and signed Fender stratocaster; a pair of Levi’s he wore in the “Heart-Shaped Box” music video; and more.

Ask Bill Wyman what people should expect from The Stones and Brian Jones, documentarian Nick Broomfield’s new film about the late, doomed founder of the band, and he’s pretty straightforward about it: “The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but!”
That may be a slight exaggeration, but there’s no denying that the documentary, for which the former Rolling Stones bass player was a “historical consultant,” delves into the highs (laterally and figuratively) and lows of the man who started the Stones but never lived past the Sixties.

Aside from the frequency with which contemporaneous news footage reporting on Kurt Cobain’s death in 1994 still pops up in documentaries about the era, In Utero’s place in both the Nirvana and rock canon might be the clearest expression of how much the singer’s death still reverberates today. But the popular interpretations of the album as a quasi-suicide note not only miss its emotional breadth and sly humor—regularly understated when discussing Cobain as a lyricist—but also what it represented 30 years ago: With In Utero, Nirvana showed that something akin to “success on your own terms” was indeed possible.
Even being the biggest band on the planet in 1993 didn’t insulate Nirvana from having to put up with rumors about squabbling between the group and Geffen Records over whether the album was unlistenable. Despite claims from producer Steve Albini, both the band and David Geffen publicly denied...

Soon after Michael Azerrad first published the touchstone Nirvana biography Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana in 1993, his subject’s future was cut much too short. Now, in honor of its 30th anniversary, Azerrad is bringing the book up to date with The Amplified Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana, a “super-expanded” version that’s out October 24th.

Thirty years after the release of Nirvana’s final studio album, In Utero, there are somehow still new things to learn about the band, as original biographer Michael Azerrad proves in his upcoming expanded edition of his classic 1993 book, Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana. The new book, The Amplified Come As You Are (due Oct. 24) more than doubles the length of the original version, with new information from Azerrad’s original interviews, corrections (no, Kurt Cobain never actually lived under a bridge), and reflections on the initial text.

Sinéad O’Connor’s life and career were marked by cycles of rage and forgiveness. For the Irish singer-songwriter, the world’s ills and evils could be traced back to the Roman Empire—and the Roman Catholic Church in particular. Her beef with the Church didn’t repel her from religion, but propelled her into a perpetual search for meaning amid what she viewed as corruption, abuse, and injustice.
O’Connor’s fiery debut album, 1987’s The Lion and the Cobra, is rife with allegorical stories about war, ghosts, and slain dragons, signaling from the very start that she wasn’t just an artist, but a warrior. Her quest for justice and salvation deepened and matured over the years, reflected in her 1997 EP Gospel Oak, 2000’s Faith and Courage, and 2007’s ambitious Theology.

Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is one of the most famous classic rock songs of the 1990s. During an interview, Amos revealed the song had a huge impact on her when she first heard it. In addition, she said the spirit of a piano had to convince her to cover “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

“While I was sitting there in the silence, the piano kind of just showed herself to me,” she added. “There wasn’t a physical piano, but sort of the spirits of the piano.

Legendary recording engineer and producer Steve Albini has opened up about the historic recording sessions with Nirvana that produced the band’s final album In Utero. Speaking with NME, Albini revealed the lengths he and the band went to in order to keep the recording sessions secret.
“I had to do everything I could to keep it under wraps to make sure that we didn’t get overrun by fans and the added nonsense,” Albini said. This included booking the studio in a remote location under a pseudonym inspired by the Sex Pistols.
It was 1993, and Nirvana had become global superstars due to the success of 1991’s Nevermind. Albini — who had already built up a reputation for himself as an engineer and member of the punk rock outfit Big Black — had never met the band prior to their working together, but knew that he would need to find a secluded...

An electric guitar once owned and smashed by the legendary Kurt Cobain was sold at an auction in New York City for just under $600,000 – nearly 10 times what it was originally estimated for.
The Nirvana frontman is known to have broken several guitars while performing during their Nevermind era in the early 1990s, one of which is the iconic left-handed black-and-white Fender Stratocaster he smashed on stage and later reassembled.

According to Julien Auctions, the company that handled the sale, despite the guitar’s repair, it remained unplayable and was later gifted by Cobain to friend and fellow musician Mark Lanegan in 1992. The body of the guitar is signed by Nirvana’s three members — Cobain, Dave Grohl, and Krist Novoselic – and features a message from Cobain to Lanegan that reads: “Hell-o Mark! A Fender Stratocaster smashed onstage by Kurt Cobain during Nirvana’s tour in support of Nevermind has sold for $595,900 at auction.
The guitar — a reassembled-yet-unplayable left-handed black Strat — went for around 10 times its original estimate of $60-80k at a Julien’s Auction this past weekend at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York City. The instrument was signed (in one way or another) by all three members of Nirvana, including Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl.
This particular Strat had some personal significance, as it was gifted by Cobain to his friend and fellow Seattle music cohort, the late Screaming Trees singer Mark Lanegan. Kurt even inscribed the body of the guitar: “Hell-o mark! Love, Your Pal, Kurdt Kobain/ Washed up rockstar.”
Additional markings include the signatures of the three members of Nirvana, as well as a neck-plate engraving reading “Boddah Lives,” in reference to Cobain’s imaginary childhood friend.

New York, May 21 (Ians) A guitar smashed by US rock band Nirvana’s late frontman Kurt Cobain, in the early 1990s, was sold at an auction for nearly $600,000 – over 10 times of its estimated price, media reports said.
The busted black Fender Stratocaster was sold at the auction at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York on Saturday and acquired for $596,900 by a buyer, whose identity is not known, the BBC reported.
Cobain, who took his own life in 1994, destroyed the guitar as Nirvana was working on their break-out album Nevermind in the early 1990s.
The instrument, which has been put back together but is no longer playable, is signed by all three band members in a silver marker. It also features an affectionate inscription by Cobain to his friend and musical collaborator Mark Lanegan – who died last year.
Cobain, who often misspelt his own name, signed the instrument “Kurdt Kobain”.

Courtney Love has revealed some of Kurt Cobain’s working lyrics for “Smells Like Teen Spirit” while appearing on the latest episode of 60 Songs That Explain the ’90s, a podcast hosted by The Ringer’s Rob Harvilla.
During the interview (via The Line of Best Fit), Love spoke about how she used to push her late husband to up his game by buying him a Leonard Cohen lyric book before bringing out some of Cobain’s early lyrics for Nirvana’s breakout megahit. Explaining that some of the lines were published in Kurt’s journals and others were not, Love sang two versions of the lyrics a cappella.
The first begins with the following verse: “Come out and play/ Make up the rules/ I know I hope to buy the truth/ Who will be the king and queen of all the outcasted teens?” It then goes into a working version...

Billy Corgan and the late Kurt Cobain are no doubt two of the greatest songwriters of the early ’90s alternative-rock revolution. In a new interview, the Smashing Pumpkins frontman likened it to a competition, calling the Nirvana mastermind his “greatest opponent.”
Speaking with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Corgan opted for the sports analogy when discussing his reaction to the death of Cobain in 1994, while also reflecting on Smashing Pumpkins’ legacy compared to the other greats of the era, including Nirvana.
“I want the Pumpkins standing on the top of the heap of our generation,” Corgan said in the interview. “If that means I got to write 800 songs to do it, I’ll do it. I ain’t shy about that. Courtney Love, 58, posted a tribute to her late husband Kurt Cobain on Instagram, marking the 29th anniversary of his death. The image was a black-and-white photo of Cobain’s hands clasped together that was taken by R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe.
Love wrote, “It is one of the only images (or sounds/ tastes etc) that makes me miss him deeply. He chanted with me & often, & truly was moved by our Buddhist practice. Thus, I know he’s in an enlightened place, more so, than we here in mappo are.”
Cobain is known as the lead vocalist for the band Nirvana. The 90s rock group helped popularize the grunge scene in the Pacific Northwest with singles like “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Come As You Are.”
Love, the lead singer of Hole, and Cobain married in 1992. Cobain died by suicide on April 5, 1994. The couple shared one child together, daughter Frances Bean.

It’s Pleasantly Surprising to See That Dave Grohl Hasn’t Disappeared Following Taylor Hawkins’ Death
It’s pleasantly surprising that Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl hasn’t disappeared following Taylor Hawkins’ death. The music icon almost disappeared after Kurt Cobain’s death, and hardly wanted to hear music after the tragedy. In 2001, Hawkins almost died of a drug overdose, and Grohl planned to leave music behind completely if his bandmate didn’t pull through.
Hawkins died on tour with Foo Fighters in South America on March 25, 2022. Grohl and the band took time off, but it doesn’t look like his best friend’s death has put Grohl in an early retirement, thankfully.

Grohl was only in Nirvana for four years. The grunge band only released three studio albums, but they took fans and the music industry by storm.

Most people would agree that Nirvana’s music embodies the spirit of Generation X, yet they never managed to write a song worthy of becoming number one. In fact, they never even breached the top five. However, one song, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” managed to get close and went on to become the anthem of the grunge era.

The first trailer for "The Batman," which launched at the inaugural DC FanDome event back in 2020, might be the most incredible trailer I've ever seen. At least, the trailer that got me the most excited to see a film. From the somber-toned needle drop of Nirvana's "Something In The Way," you could feel every skeptic be collectively converted. This was positioned to be a Batman unlike any other, and things only got better from there with a teaser building toward a heart-stopping moment, when the music drops and Robert Pattinson's Dark Knight mercilessly beats a random miscreant into the ground.
I must have rewatched that trailer a few dozen times, and even found myself sucked into YouTube's reaction video community. Everything about this Batman seemed fresh yet faithful to the character's essence. At some point during my endless rewatching, I noticed there was more to the Nirvana...

Courtney Love is not backing down on claims she made about being fired from Fight Club because she wouldn’t allow Brad Pitt to play her late husband, Kurt Cobain.
Earlier this week, during an appearance on the Wtf with Marc Maron podcast, Love alleged that she was originally cast to play Marla, a character eventually portrayed by Helena Bonham Carter.
Love told host Marc Maron that she was fired from Fight Club after she “went nuclear” on Pitt and film director Gus Van Sant when they approached her about making a film about Cobain.
Love’s claim was disputed by a source who told Variety that she was never cast in the role after her audition.

Courtney Love stands by a claim she made on Marc Maron’s “Wtf” podcast that Brad Pitt got her booted from “Fight Club” after she blocked his attempt to make a Kurt Cobain biopic.
The story, in which Love detailed that she was initially cast in the role of Marla that went to Helena Bonham Carter in David Fincher’s 1999 film, went viral this week.
