Last week brought Woody Harrelson’s career-best performance in Rampart to the shelves, Oren Moverman’s brilliant follow-up to the Oscar-nominated The Messenger, and this week sees another great new selection of films getting their DVD/Blu-ray debut, as well as a host of classics getting the Blu-ray treatment.
Prepare for Mark Wahlberg, Kevin Spacey, Cameron Crowe, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the Devil.
My picks of the week:
Baltasar Kormákur’s Contraband & Cameron Crowe’s We Bought A Zoo & George Hickenlooper’s Casino Jack.
And the Blu-ray release of Doug Liman and Jon Favreau’s Swingers.

Welcome to the very first edition of a brand new feature here on Blogomatic3000… Movie of the Day! The goal? To highlight some of the great films you can stream direct to your living rooms and to point out some of the more obscure films that are worthy your attention. To that end we’ve teamed up with the good folks at blinkbox – the winner of our 2010 streaming service review and my personal favourite of all the online movie services – to bring you the Movie of the Day.

Contraband hits UK DVD and Blu-ray shelves today and to mark the occasion, we’ve got this great featurette taking us behind the scenes of the movie and looking specifically at Director Baltasar Kormákur. Kormákur is a writer and actor and most of the cast and production crew love that connection as it means that he really understand the way in which they work and the way they love to be talked to.
If you missed Contraband theatrically, then you should definitely check this one out as it has a great cast (Mark Wahlberg, Kate Beckinsale, Ben Foster, Giovanni Ribisi, Lukas Haas, Caleb Landry Jones, Diego Luna, J.K. Simmons) and a really good story. You can order it from Amazon here or rent from LOVEFiLM here.

Contraband arrived on Blu-ray and DVD today from Universal. Mark Wahlberg fans will surely enjoy this heist thriller, but I was not a fan. The cast includes Kate Beckinsale, Giovanni Ribisi, Ben Foster, Lukas Haas, Caleb Landry Jones, Diego Luna, and J.K. Simmons. Baltasar Kormákur starred in the original and directed the remake of Reykjavík-Rotterdam (2008).
The film follows Chris Farraday (Wahlberg), a super smuggler who is now an upstanding citizen (and security system specialist). He has a wife Kate (Beckinsale) and sons, but his wife's brother Andy (Landry Jones) is trying to carry on the Farraday name as an active smuggler. After a botched smuggling run, Andy finds himself owing money to Tim Briggs (Ribisi). Chris tries to intervene and save his brother-in-law's life. When talking does not work with Briggs, Farraday is left with coming up with the money or Andy get's killed. Chris is forced to reunite his crew,...

What is it with Mark Wahlberg? The man has a fair amount of talent, witness ‘The Departed’ or ‘The Fighter’; and he has an eye for entertainment with the highly successful (and yes, very entertaining) ‘Entourage’, and yet somehow he finds himself regressing in middle of road, and frankly unremarkable fare like Contraband. It’s as if he constantly needs to revert to some image of two-dimensional tough guy upbringing. He even has a grasp on self-mockery, put to great effect in the goofball ‘The Other Guys’. Unless of course he was the only one who wasn’t in on the joke. Still, with Contraband’s $65 million Us gross out of a $25 million budget, maybe he’s the one who’s laughing.
In his latest action outing Wahlberg is Chris Farraday, a working man, trying to make an honest living through his home security company. However...

What do you get when production company Working Title teams up with the director of the gentle, understated Icelandic comedy 101 Reykjavík? The answer is (somewhat surprisingly) pulpy, action-drama remake, Contraband.
Mark Wahlberg is Chris Farraday, a once world-class smuggler who has now gone legit and lives a peaceful existence with his wife Kate (Kate Beckinsale) and their children in New Orleans, where he runs a domestic security business. His suburban bliss is interrupted when (wouldn’t you know it) he’s forced back into his old life when Kate’s younger brother Andy (X-Men: First Class graduate Caleb Landry Jones) lands himself in hot water after ditching a consignment he’s been smuggling over to the Us for mob lackey Tim Briggs (Giovanni Ribisi) when U.S. Customs intervene.
Briggs is hardly what you’d describe as the forgiving type, and he insists on being paid back everything owed to him.

Mark Wahlberg (The Fighter) gets pulled back into a criminal life in thriller movie Contraband.
Rated R, the film follows Chris Farraday (Wahlberg), a former smuggler who was the best at his job before he gave it up to be with his wife (Kate Beckinsale, Underworld). But when drug kingpin Tim Briggs (Giovanni Ribisi, Columbus Circle) threatens his family, Farraday agrees to do one last run.
Ben Foster (The Messenger) and Lukas Haas (Red Riding Hood) also star in the R-rated movie.
Contraband grossed a decent $65 million in theaters, but got mixed reviews from critics.

Here’s a nice new featurette for Contraband which gives us a great overview on what the film is about and introduces us to the lead characters played by Mark Wahlberg, Kate Beckinsale and Giovanni Ribisi. It’ll be with us March 16th and after watching this, I’m really looking forward to seeing it.
Contraband is directed by Baltasar Kormákur and also stars Ben Foster, Lukas Haas, Caleb Landry Jones, Diego Luna and J.K. Simmons.
Mark Wahlberg leads the cast of Contraband, a fast-paced thriller about a man trying to stay out of a world he worked so hard to leave behind and the family he’ll do anything to protect. Set in New Orleans, the film explores the cutthroat underground world of international smuggling—full of desperate criminals and corrupt officials, high-stakes and big payoffs—where loyalty rarely exists and death is one wrong turn away.

Action thriller Contraband, starring Mark Wahlberg, has entered the North American box office at No1, taking $24million (£15.7million) on its opening weekend.
Nikki Rocco, head of distribution for Universal, said it was down to Wahlberg's popularity as a performer and added that the movie - produced by British company Working Title - was cost-effective. It had a budget of $25million, which it has nearly recouped already in a debut that was above industry expectations.
Directed by Baltasar Kormakur, it also stars Kate Beckinsale, Giovanni Ribisi, Ben Foster, Caleb Landry Jones, Lukas Haas, Diego Luna and Jk Simmons.
Last week's box office number one, horror film The Devil Inside, plummeted to seventh place with a drop of almost 77 per cent, the 19th biggest fall on record. But it was made for less than $1million and has already earned $46.2million, so studio chiefs at Paramount won't be feeling too devastated.

Mark Wahlberg takes centre stage in Contraband, a film that gets too twisty and complicated for its own good. Here's Ron's review...
Once upon a time, Chris Farraday (Mark Wahlberg) was one of the best smugglers in the game. They called him Houdini, and he was the best.
Then, he got married to the lovely Kate (Kate Beckinsale) and fathered a couple of lovely boys. He's got a new business, a house on the outskirts of New Orleans, and he's trying to build a life on the straight and narrow while leaving his criminal days behind him.
Then, his wife's little brother Andy (Caleb Landry Jones) ran into some trouble while making a smuggling run and he had to dump a few hundred thousand dollars' worth of drugs meant to go to the sketchy-looking Tim Briggs (Giovanni Ribisi).
Andy is now in a world of trouble, and if he doesn't get the money somehow.

New 'Contraband' movie delivered great action, drama & wild twists. Universal Pictures recently released their new action/thriller flick "Contraband" into theaters this weekend. I just checked it out,and I thought it was pretty good as Mark Wahlberg delivered some pretty intense,action-filled,suspenseful scenes. The movie stars: Mark Wahlberg, Kate Beckinsale, Ben Foster, Giovanni Ribisi, Caleb Landry Jones, Lukas Haas, Diego Luna, and J.K. Simmons. In the flick, character Chris Farraday (Mark Wahlberg) gets forced back into a life of crime after his brother-in-law Andy messes up a drug deal for his crazy, ruthless boss Tim Briggs. So, Chris has to do what he does best, and run a mega contraband to smuggle in millions of counterfeit bills to pay the debt. He quickly assembles a crew to head on over to Panama City to do the job. Moviegoers don't ask for much in the month of January. For the most part, they understand what they're in for and don't have very lofty expectations. However, when they see ads for a film like Contraband with a cast lineup including Mark Wahlberg, Giovanni Ribisi, Kate Beckinsale, Ben Foster and J.K. Simmons, the expectations might be a little high, even for January. Director Baltasar Komákur manages to helm a competently made action movie that has a few minor problems with it, but is actually a halfway decent January release.

With Contraband, Mark Wahlberg calls on his criminal-turned-family-man performance chops as Chris, a one-time drug smuggler who's left that life behind so he can settle down with his wife (Kate Beckinsale) and two kids. But when his brother-in-law follows in his footsteps and finds himself indebted to a local drug lord, Chris is pulled back in and you better believe it's going to be an adrenaline rush to the finish.
This is a ticking time clock thriller that doesn't know when to let off the throttle or say enough is enough. It never takes a breather, though I'm fairly certain director Baltasar Kormakur has a potentially great career ahead of him if he can find himself a quality script to work with.
At the outset, Kormakur channels the visionary stylings of Michael Mann as the Customs and Border Protection (Cbp) descends on a shipping freighter suspected of smuggling drugs into the country.

Judging by the advertisements for Contraband, I expected to watch a half-baked actioner with big beats and little brains (let alone heart). Instead the film, a remake of the Icelandic Reykjavik-Rotterdam and with a cast member as director, is a more than capable action picture, filled with fun small moments and a tight script that whisks us from the unmistakable charm of New Olreans onto the high-seas and into the high stakes world of illegal contraband.

Family can f*** you up. In Baltasar Kormákur's terse thriller Contraband, Mark Wahlberg plays Chris Farraday, a career criminal who's gone straight. He's happily married to Kate (Kate Beckinsale), loves his two growing boys, and is content to be a small business owner in the Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans. But then his young brother-in-law Andy (Caleb Landry Jones) screws up a drug deal, and it's up to Chris to fix it. Andy's mistake is compounded because his "employer," Tim Briggs (Giovanni Ribisi), is a merciless sleazeball. Briggs took advantage of the void created when Chris quit the business and is now running things. When Chris tries to negotiate a settlement, Briggs refuses to accept anything less than full price in exchange for the drugs...

From all appearances, Giovanni Ribisi is a really nice guy. He's polite and soft-spoken and can talk at length about the importance of values and family. He's described by co-stars as a dedicated and generous actor. He insists on paying for lunch. So why is he so good at playing such vile characters onscreen? When asked this, Ribisi laughs good-naturedly. "I don't know; it's a funny question," he says. "Maybe I'm so nasty onscreen, I get it out of my system." He takes it as a compliment that one interview described his "Avatar" character, corporate slimeball Parker Selfridge, as "the world's biggest douchebag." But in his new film "Contraband," Ribisi's lowlife drug trafficker Tim Briggs makes Selfridge look like a Boy Scout. Adorned with menacing tattoos on his face and body, Briggs sports a scruffy goatee and hair slicked back with God only knows what. Briggs would just as soon run.

Robbery and heist movies have their fair share of villains. Giovanni Ribisi in "Contraband" plays a good, slimy one. In his recent interview with HitFix, the actor described what it was like to live in the tattoo-covered skin of Tim Briggs, who plays opposite of Mark Wahlberg's recovering and torn thief Chris Farraday. To take on the character, Ribisi learned to wear his own "prison face," going through the "daily process of being in the makeup chair and trying to embrace that transformation. "It was an education," the actor said, an "undertaking of what prison life was like." He said he...

Five clips and some new images from Mark Wahlberg’s actioner “Contraband”, which looks like it has the makings of a gritty, “down low” action movie. I guess we should take the studio’s less-than-stellar promotion of the film to mean they don’t have very high hopes for it. These clips, though, look pretty good. Wahlberg is Wahlberg, but Giovanni Ribisi looks like he’s turned in a pretty darn tasty villain. Judge for yourself. Contraband is shaping up to be one of the best action crime dramas of next year, and we’ve already been seeing some great things from it, in the form of the first official trailer back in September, followed up by the first and second posters for the film, and most recently the second trailer just over a month ago.
Mark Wahlberg stars in the lead – therefore guaranteeing its brilliance; I’m a big Wahlberg fan – alongside the likes of the excellent Ben Foster, Giovanni Ribisi, Kate Beckinsale, J.K. Simmons, and Lukas Haas, with Wahlberg’s brother, Robert Wahlberg, also taking a smaller role.
We’ve now got a brilliant new clip to share with you from the film, courtesy of Fandango, which should nicely whet your appetite and get you as excited to see this as I am, if you aren’t already.

I don’t know who is doing the PR stuff for “Contraband”, but dear God, each and every new poster for this movie is worst than the last one. Hell, it’s almost like they’re purposefully trying to make the film look as cheap as possible so you won’t go see it. Then again, the low-rent nature of these posters may be because the movie is scheduled to open in January, the dumping ground for films that the studios have no faith in. Rarely does a film come along that opens in January and survives unscathed. In any case, get an eyeful of another awful poster for “Contraband”. Trust me, no one’s gonna be trying to smuggle this sucker anywhere. Following a slew of new posters it’s time for another round-up of the latest one-sheets to hit the interwebs, including Bruce Willis’ latest Catch 44, the Mark Wahlberg flick Contraband, hockey comedy Goon, animated family film Happy Feet 2 and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.
Catch .44
For Tes (Malin Akerman) and her two cohorts Kara (Nikki Reed) and Tara (Deborah Ann Woll), the job sounded simple enough: intercept a double-cross drug shipment for their crime boss Mel (Bruce Willis) at an isolated diner. But when an unstoppable chain of events unfolds, everyone soon realizes no one is who they seem and the job may be something other than eliminating the competition. What started as simple instructions has now turned into a deadly cat-and-mouse game – with large guns pointed at everyone. Catch .44 also stars Brad Dourif, Michael Rosenbaum and Shea Whigham.

Last winter Mark Wahlberg was on the press circuit promoting the ultimately Oscar-winning biopic The Fighter. This year, when all of Hollywood will be attempting to graciously duke it out for nominations, awards and notice, Wahlberg will be clear of that contest, pushing Contraband, a crime thriller in which a crook turned security guard (Wahlberg) must get back into the smuggling game one last time to save his family from a brutal crime boss.
The first trailer played up the film’s action sequences and danger with a funky score and gritty title cards. The new trailer, intended to attract UK audiences, amps up the drama with a more somber soundtrack, slo-mo and multiple shots of a terrorized Kate Beckinsale, who plays Wahlberg’s wife.

A new, second trailer for “Contraband”, starring Mark Wahlberg as a pissed off guy and Kate Beckinsale as his lovely wife. It’s pretty much the same as the theatrical trailer released a while back. The film is still nothing to get too excited about, though it’ll probably end up being a decent action/crime thriller. Giovanni Ribisi as the bad guy may be a tad hard to take too seriously, though. Anyways, take a gander at it below, won’t you? Chris Farraday long ago abandoned his life of crime, but after his brother-in-law, Andy, botches a drug deal for his ruthless boss, Tim Briggs, Chris is forced back into doing what he does best — running contraband — to settle Andy’s debt. Universal Pictures has released a new movie trailer for their upcoming action thriller called Contraband, which stars Mark Wahlberg, Kate Beckinsale, Ben Foster, Giovanni Ribisi and Lukas Haas. The movie was written by Aaron Guzikowski, the writer behind 2009 Blacklist spec script Prisoners. This is a remake of a 2008, the star and producer of that original 2008 film, Baltasar Kormakur, is directing the remake.
In the film Wahlberg plays a former smuggler trying to go straight as a night guard. When his wife’s brother (who got him the job) botches a smuggling run, his life is threatened and the night guard is dragged in for one more job. Foster plays the night guards best friend and right hand man, who helps him take on the dangerous job.

Mark Wahlberg is quite the versatile actor. Lately, he’s been doing everything from comedy (The Other Guys) to drama (The Fighter). And he seems like he’s having an absolute blast doing it. To his credit, over the last few years he’s been pretty much on fire. But he always seems to be a row or two back from ringside (if you catch my drift), maybe it’s Max Payne that did the damage. But either way, his latest offering, Contraband has just exploded all over the internet with a new trailer. And it looks gritty and intense! And…and…it’s got Wolves. The movie doesn’t hit until March 2012, but, and I know it hard, if the trailer is to be believed this is gonna be awesome! A second trailer for the new Mark Wahlberg film, Contraband, has been unveiled and it’s not a subtle affair.
This trailer eschews the talking and plot which was preferred for the initial trailer we saw in favour of all out action, shouting, guns pointed and a nice looking explosion in super slow motion. Watch them both and make up your mind. I doubt it’ll change our worlds but as long as director Baltasar Kormákur has his action trousers on I think this one will be fun to watch.
Alongside Wahlberg, Contraband stars Kate Beckinsale, Caleb Landry Jones, Ben Foster, Giovanni Ribisi, Lukas Haas, J.K. Simmons and Diego Luna.

We got the first poster part-way through last month for Mark Wahlberg’s follow-up to his brilliant last film, The Fighter, and it was pretty awesome, coming a couple of weeks after the official trailer (which I’m personally avoiding, to stay spoiler-free, but you’re more than welcome to feast your eyes on it here).
The film’s second poster has now arrived, courtesy of Imp Awards, and it’s pretty damn good too. Largely in black and white, with the exception of the leading cast’s names, it focuses on the film’s lead, Wahlberg, and also gives us a great look at the main supporting cast of Kate Beckinsale (Underworld), Ben Foster (The Messenger), and Giovanni Ribisi (Avatar).
And like the first poster, it features the film’s tagline, What would you hide to protect your family?

Imp Awards published a couple of posters from the upcoming movie “Contraband.” The poster designs are by Concept Arts. The crime thriller stars Mark Wahlberg, Kate Beckinsale, Giovanni Ribisa, Ben Foster, Caleb Landry Jones and Diego Luna. Here is a synopsis of the film: Mark Wahlberg leads the cast of Contraband, a white-knuckle action-thriller about a man trying to stay out of a world he worked hard to leave behind and the family he'll do anything to protect. Set in New Orleans, the film explores the cutthroat underground world of international smuggling-full of desperate criminals and corrupt officials, high-stakes and big payoffs-where loyalty rarely exists and death is one wrong turn away. Chris Farraday (Wahlberg) long ago abandoned his life of crime, but after his brother-in-law, Andy (Caleb Landry Jones), botches a drug deal for his ruthless boss, Tim Briggs (Giovanni Ribisi), Chris is forced back into doing what he...
