Well, look at that, we’re up to my lucky number thirteenth Archie’s House of Horrors. And I can’t imagine a better title to celebrate that milestone than Archie Comics: Judgment Day. After all, who doesn’t love talking about the end of the world?
It’s no mystery why apocalyptic settings are, ironically, a fertile playground for horror stories. The stories basically write themselves, as whether we consciously admit it or not, we’re always consumed by the fear of the end of the world. We’re constantly reminded of the doomsday clock and its hands shifting ever closer to midnight. Every day the world throws a new curveball at us and gives us stark reminders that life on planet Earth is not infinite.
That’s why, perhaps, there’s some fun in creating fiction about the end of the world. It gives us the control to...

My guest this week is Judith Light.
Last season, we saw her take home an Emmy for her guest role in Poker Face, in which she hilariously climbed a rose trellis while cleverly camouflaged in a natty pink and green pantsuit. Such is Light’s talent: from the humor of the aforementioned old folks’ home resident terrorist, to her heartfelt turn as matriarch Shelley Pfefferman in Transparent; from The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, to ABC sitcom Who’s the Boss, she’s done it all. And then there are the multiple Tony wins…
Right now, Light can be seen in Max series Julia, in which she plays Blanche Knopf, the legendary publisher of Julia Child’s books, and in Starz’s horror-comedy show Shining Vale, Light is Courteney Cox’s fabulously passive-aggressive mother Joan.
Next up, Light will star opposite Billy Crystal, who also serves as EP,...

The first full-length trailer for Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part Three has just hit (via Toonado.com), and it teases what looks to be a high-stakes finale to this animated trilogy (and the Tomorrowverse as we know it).
With the Anti-Monitor on the loose, a whole host of heroes assemble to save the Multiverse, but it looks like that will be easier said than done when they also have Lex Luthor to contend with. Several other villains are also spotted, including The Joker, Scarecrow, and Two-Face.
In terms of cameos, the trailer ends with another Batman: The Animated Series tease. Batman Beyond also appears, but perhaps the biggest surprise comes when we return to the world of the Super Friends!
The Saturday morning cartoon aired between 1973 and 1985 on ABC and was produced by Hanna-Barbera. That classic animation style returns here and we're hoping the movie has even...

Death Note fans have always debated the role of Light Yagami as a protagonist in the series. Some fans believe that his actions by the end of the series make him an antagonist, while others believe that he was still a good guy, but he got astray from his path and went on a killing spree to save himself, developing a God complex.

The creator of the series, Tsugumi Ohba, also thinks the same. In an interview, Ohba revealed that he refused to let Light Yagami become the bad guy, which is why the entire blame was put on Mikami for making a mistake. This way, even if Light became the villain of his own story, the blame would still land on Mikami rather than Light.

One of the reasons why Death Note is one of the biggest anime series even after so long is the fact that, since the beginning, the series has introduced a new twist or turn in every episode. The mysterious psychological thriller, with the addition of supernatural entities, makes it one of the most successful pioneers of the anime industry.

The main credit for this goes to the writer of the series, Tsugumi Ohba, and the illustrator, Takeshi Obata. The combined effort of the two is the reason why Death Note is so great. However, even great creators like Obata have limitations. In an interview, Obata revealed the one problem in his art that he cannot control or solve.

Although it is not very typical for a protagonist in anime to pass away, there are a number of anime series where the protagonist’s demise plays a major role in the plot. The most significant event in the program is nearly usually the death of the main character, whether it’s through dealing a severe emotional blow or advancing the plot by giving the reins to a new character.
Even though some of them might live again in the future, their deaths had a profound effect on everyone in their immediate vicinity. The protagonist’s death doesn’t always mean the series is going to end. It just hands over the reign to someone who is either related to the character or becomes more significant to the series.

Netflix's track record with producing live-action anime is mixed, at best. The streamer's "One Piece" series has already been renewed, but the live-action "Cowboy Bebop" was a swiftly-canceled mess.
Their most infamous project, however, is probably "Death Note." This story, first told by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata in a mega-popular manga, focuses on the Japanese teenager Light Yagami. One day, a notebook falls from the sky into Light's lap. Dropped by a Shinigami (a Japanese death god) named Ryuk, the "death note" will kill anyone whose name is written on its pages. Light decides to purge the world of evil by using the Death Note to kill high-profile criminals, becoming a serial killer himself in the process. Dubbed "Kira" (a Japanese pronunciation of "Killer"), he gains allies (deludedly loyal pop idol Misa Amane) and adversaries (eccentric master detective L).
This 2017 film, directed by Adam Wingard, transposed this story to Seattle.

To say that’s been a rocky month at Fox News would be an understatement. First, in April, the conservative cable news network agreed to pay $787.5 million to settle a defamation suit from Dominion Voting Systems for airing lies about the company interfering in the 2020 presidential election — avoiding a trial that was bound to prove intensely embarrassing. Days later, they fired their biggest primetime star, Tucker Carlson, following a period of internal warfare between the host and top executives. Ratings immediately took a dive, with a wide swath of conservatives...

This article contains spoilers for "Poker Face" episode 5.
Rian Johnson's new Peacock series, "Poker Face," is a total blast with unique murder mysteries that wrap up before the end of each episode -- much like "Murder, She Wrote" or "Columbo," but with Natasha Lyonne working her own brand of mystery-solving magic. Each episode has a slightly different vibe to it, and while Johnson directed a couple of the episodes, he also brought in some talented folks to take on helming duties. Episode 5, "Time of the Monkey," finds our hero Charlie Cale (Lyonne) working at a nursing home while she's on the run from some seriously sinister criminals and the cops due to the events of the pilot, and it's a 1970s-flavored dark delight courtesy of horror director Lucky McKee.

Johnny Cash performed several country music songs that are enduring classics and crossed over to the mainstream. He didn’t write all his hits, and “Folsom Prison Blues” set his bank account back 75,000 after a plagiarism lawsuit, but that doesn’t change the fact The Man in Black remains a country legend because of his tunes. One of Cash’s signature songs, “Ring of Fire,” comes with a twisting and sordid story that is song-worthy itself.
June Carter Cash (left) and Johnny Cash | ABC Photo Archives/Disney General Entertainment Content via Getty Images Johnny Cash didn’t earn a songwriting credit for ‘Ring of Fire’
Aside from Cash’s deep-throated baritone, “A Boy Named Sue” and “Ring of Fire” don’t have all that much in common. The former is a relatively simple country-folk storytelling narrative. The latter is a genre-bending country-latin tune whose mariachi horns might be the highlight.

[This story contains spoilers from the fifth episode of Poker Face, “Time of the Monkey.”]
Irene Smothers and Joyce Harris finally brought Judith Light and S. Epatha Merkerson together.
The two screen and stage legends had admired each other for years, but they’d never crossed paths on a project. Not until they were cast as — wait for it — a pair of homicidal political radicals on Rian Johnson’s new Peacock series.
“The role came to me. They sent me the script,” Light tells The Hollywood Reporter of landing the standout part of Irene Smothers, one-half of the murderous nursing home duo who star in “Time of the Monkey,” which released Feb. 2. “The agent said, ‘Do you want to do this?’ And I said, ‘Are you kidding? Is that a question? Of course I want to do it. But I really want to make sure that it’s Epatha that I get to work with.’ That was really important to me.

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from “Poker Face” Episode 5, now streaming on Peacock.
Following last week’s launch of four premise-setting episodes of Rian Johnson and Natasha Lyonne’s “Poker Face,” the new Peacock mystery series went in a drastically different direction for Episode 5, with murderers who don’t seem like the villains — until they do.
Guest-starring Judith Light and S. Epatha Merkerson as Irene Smothers and Joyce Harris, respectively, the episode, titled “Time of the Monkey,” follows the two retirement-home residents and life-long besties with a solid free-spirit streak who become friends with human lie-detector Charlie Cale (Lyonne) while she’s working in their community for her latest on-the-run gig.
“You want her to be friends with these cool women and be ride or die with them — and instead they break her heart. And it’s really hard for her,” co-showrunner Nora Zuckerman told Variety.

Spoiler alert: The following article discusses the entirety of “Poker Face” Episode 5, “Time of the Monkey”
In “Poker Face,” Rian Johnson’s first-ever TV show following in the tradition of ‘70s detective stories like “Columbo,” Natasha Lyonne is a human lie detector-cum-begrudging murder solver. The Peacock series’ latest episode, titled “Time of the Monkey,” features Judith Light as half a badass duo of retirees whose activism during the counterculture period is not as altruistic as it first may seem.

So here we are, the rather arbitrarily chosen issue number seven, the final part of the mini-series we were told would shatter everything we knew about previously shattered universes and multiverses. Overall it’s been consistently decent, but has lacked that certain something to make it essential. It seems at times Williamson is trying his hardest to make all this grand and important, but yet not quite having enough puff to get to the top of that hill. Still, they say endings are the hardest part of any story, so let’s see if a home run can still be scored.
We start with a theme that Williamson has been threading through the entire series, the co-existence of the big and small at the same time. While a battle rages in the real world between the Darkness-possessed Slade Wilson and his Dark Army,...

Emmy and Tony winner Judith Light has signed on as an executive producer for “Aikane,” an animated short film (formerly titled “Falling”) from the filmmakers behind “Kapaemahu” — Daniel Sousa, Dean Hamer, Joe Wilson and Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu — which was shortlisted for the best animated short Oscar in 2021.
While “Kapaemahu” focused on Hawaii’s legendary gender-fluid healers, “Aikane” follows the romantic adventures of a valiant island warrior, a handsome young man and an octopus brought together by a twist of fate. The story is described as “an epic romantic adventure that instills hope in a time of rising prejudice and hate.”
Directed by Oscar-nominated animator Sousa (who also designed the film), Hamer and Wilson, Light is joined as an executive producer by Daniel Karslake, whose work “addresses the intersection of spirituality and social justice,” and Hawaiian teacher cultural leader Wong-Kalu, who has collaborated on six previous projects with married producing partners Hamer and Wilson.

The story is described as “an epic romantic adventure that instills hope in a time of rising prejudice and hate.”

Nicholas Hoult (The Great) did a deep dive into the world of foodies to prepare for Searchlight Pictures’ twisted horror comedy The Menu. Hoult plays one of the guests at an exclusive – and isolated – restaurant who discovers his delicious meal comes at a higher price than anticipated.
“It was very difficult because I had to eat at nice restaurants and watch lots of food shows,” said Hoult, laughing. “It was one of those amazing things that the more of Chef’s Table I watched, the more that I was in awe and amazed by these singular-minded, dedicated chefs who committed their whole lives to their craft. And then I was starstruck because Dominique Crenn, who was the food advisor on the movie and designed the menu, she was on set one day and I’d seen her episode and I was like, ‘Oh my God, it’s her!’

‘The Menu’ Cast on Being ‘Teased’ by Prop Food and Why Audiences Love Watching the Ultra-Rich Suffer
“The Menu” brings a troupe of wealthy diners to one of the finest fictional restaurants in America. There are rare oysters, elevated tacos and a bread plate sans bread — or, unaccompanied accompaniments. The comedic thriller recruited award-winning chef Dominique Crenn as its chief technical consultant, but according to the cast, they didn’t get to enjoy much of the world-class food seen on screen.
“It was kind of a tease because we didn’t get to eat very much of it, at the end of the day,” Reed Birney told Variety on the red carpet at the New York premiere of “The Menu.” “As soon as we started eating the thing, Chef would do something and cut it off. And they would take the plate away and bring a new one for the next tape.”
Carried by an ensemble cast featuring Ralph Fiennes, Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult, “The Menu...

A thriller both psychological and supernatural, "Death Note" is a cat and mouse game, but the players change throughout the story. For the bulk of the series, it's a match between Light Yagami, the Death Note's owner who uses it to kill the world's criminals, and L, the world's greatest (and weirdest) detective who is determined to identify "Kira," the person responsible for the string of mysterious deaths.
L comes close to the truth several times, but Light manages to stay one step ahead. Part 1 of the series concludes with L's death; Light manipulated events so it wasn't even him who had to write L's name in the Death Note. However, Light's victory isn't permanent. L's two handpicked successors, Near and Mello, take over the Kira case. Like L, the two were raised in British orphanage Wammy's House. Mello also has a bitter, one-sided rivalry with Near.
Near works with the law while Mello,...

This post contains spoilers for "Death Note."
"There is no Heaven or Hell. No matter what you do while you're alive, everybody goes to the same place once you die. Death is equal."
Fans of the original "Death Note" anime will remember these words spoken by L, who acts as the antithesis to Light Yagami throughout most of the series. However, in the "Death Note" manga created by Tsugumi Ohba (alongside artist Takeshi Obata), these words are spoken by Ryuk, the Shinigami who dropped the titular book on Earth for his own amusement. Interestingly, Ryuk tells this to Light, who is about to die within 45 seconds after Ryuk writes his name in the Death Note.
While the entirety of Ohba's "Death Note" is rife with twists and turns, with Light usually emerging victorious, this particular moment marks the end of Light Yagami and his rule as the self-proclaimed "god of the new world.

Nearly 40 years after making her TV debut on an episode of “Kojak,” Judith Light landed what would become her first Emmy-nominated regular series role: Shelly Pfefferman on Amazon Prime Video’s “Transparent.” The show primarily focused on the male-to-female transition of Pfefferman’s ex-spouse, Maura (Jeffrey Tambor), while also exploring the change’s effects on the lives of her family members. Light’s role became increasingly prominent over time, culminating in her being the primary lead in the 102-minute musical series finale.
Light earned a total of two Best Comedy Supporting Actress bids as Pfefferman, the second of which came for her performance in the third season finale. She was 68 years old at the time of her nomination in 2017, making her the 10th oldest competitor in the history of her category. Of the nine older women who place ahead of her, four were recognized after turning 75, and one was six...

Netflix is giving Death Note another try. After the lukewarm to negative reception of Netflix’s 2017 Death Note live-action film, the streamer is giving the property over to their biggest winners. This week, Stranger Things creators the Duffer Brothers announced they’ll be working on “an all-new live-action television series adaptation” described as “an entirely new take” separate from the movie.
Ignoring the 2017 movie is for the best. Not just because of the scathing reviews the film received upon release but because Death Note works best when it’s a serialized story told over a long season instead of trying to cram it all into two hours. After all, Death Note was originally conceived as a 12-volume manga — later adapted into a popular 37-episode anime — about how main character Light uses the titular Death Note, a notebook which kills anyone who’s name is written on its pages, to murder...
