At a glance, "Mank" might seem like an odd film for David Fincher to make. The director broke his streak of lurid crime thrillers for a biopic about the co-writer of "Citizen Kane" -- and not even Orson Welles, but Herman J. Mankiewicz (Gary Oldman). Fincher's reason for making the movie was personal: His late father, Jack, wrote the screenplay and wanted his son to direct the movie.
Jack Fincher was a journalist by trade; the peak of his career was serving as San Francisco Bureau Chief at Life Magazine. When he retired in the early 1990s, he decided to follow his son into...

At the 93rd Academy Awards, Mank‘s Erik Messerschmidt took home his first Oscar for Best Cinematography.
In his acceptance speech, he thanked director David Fincher “for creating an environment where we could do our best work,” expressing gratitude for the fact that he “got to go home and feel like I gave it my all, every night.”
He then thanked producer Ceán Chaffin for her “endless support,” screenwriter Eric Roth for his “guidance,” actors Amanda Seyfried and Gary Oldman and their fellow cast members “for hitting [their] marks,” as well as his collaborators in the camera department. “This really belongs to an extraordinary crew who I could not do anything without,” he said. “And thank you to my beautiful wife Naiara, who tolerates this crazy business and helped me get through this movie.”
While Messerschmidt had strong competition tonight in Nomadland‘s Joshua James Richards, he was also a top contender throughout awards season.

It’s been a year like no other. Actually, make that two years like no other, since eligibility in the unusual 14-month Oscar calendar was extended by two months until February 28, 2021. This will be the first Academy Awards since the sixth edition, listed as 1932-33, that will have included one year and part of the other, and this year’s awards will technically be categorized as 2020-21. While many theaters remained closed, streamers like Netflix and Amazon became more prominent than ever — a sea change that even the cinema-centric Academy had to acknowledge by making films automatically eligible even if they first debuted on a streamer, at least for this year.
Still, as the nominations showed, and my predictions will support, the traditional studios, whether alone or with the help of their specialty divisions, still look to triumph once the history of this weird season finally is written. An earlier...

It’s been a strange year, but cinema endures. The 2021 British Academy Film and Television Awards took place at the Royal Albert Hall on the 11th of April, 2021. In a first in BAFTA history, four women have been nominated in the Director category, including Nomadland director Chloe Zhao, Sarah Gavron for Rocks, and Shannon Murphy for Babyteeth. Other notable nominees include Promising Young Woman, The Trial of the Chicago 7, The Father, Saint Maud and Minari. It is a diverse line up, and a very unusual time but the red carpets are rolling out, even if they are in living rooms around the world.
Yesterday director Ang Lee was entered into the BAFTA Fellowship, and Noel Clarke was awarded the Outstanding British Contribution to cinema. This evening Edith Bowman and Dermot O’Leary hosted the awards and it was a delight to see Yun-Jung Youn’s incredible win for her role in Minari.

Even after scoring 10 Oscar nominations, the most of any film this year, pundits still felt like David Fincher‘s “Mank” under-performed thanks to snubs in categories like Best Film Editing and Best Original Screenplay. But there’s an interesting aspect to the snubbing of the screenplay that hasn’t been talked about that much. It’s the fact that the brief scene that takes place during the 14th Academy Awards omits one of the craziest events in Oscar history.

“It’s going to be a short entrance and probably exit, not that I didn’t enjoy it,” laughs Eric Roth in his exclusive interview with Gold Derby (watch the video above) about his foray into film producing with “Mank” for Netflix. Roth is such an industry veteran that he won the Writers Guild of America’s lifetime achievement award back in 2012. With screenplay credits going back five decades, including his Oscar-winning screenplay for 1994’s “Forest Gump” and 2018’s “A Star is Born” earning him his fifth Best Adapted Screenplay nomination, “Mank” represents 76-year-old Roth’s debut as a film producer. He now has his first Oscar in the Best Picture category for his first time in contention.

Before the Oscar nominations were announced, some pundits predicted as many as four posthumous nominations. Obviously, there's Chadwick's Boseman's Best Actor bid for Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. His feverish take on August Wilson's Levee was indeed nominated and, at this point in the awards season, feels bound for victory. The other potential posthumous honors, those that didn't effectively happen, were Jack Fincher (Mank) in Best Original Screenplay, Chadwick Boseman again in Supporting Actor (Da 5 Bloods), and Michael Wolf Snyder (Nomadland) in Best Sound. With that in mind, it's easy to wonder how common it is for AMPAS to honor artists who have already passed.
For trivia purposes, here's a list of all posthumous Oscar nominations divided by category. Only competitive prizes were included, so no honorary awards...

No movie received more Oscar nominations in 2021 than David Fincher’s “Mank,” a Hollywood throwback about Herman Mankiewicz (Best Actor nominee Gary Oldman), Marion Davies (Best Supporting Actress nominee Amanda Seyfried), and the writing process behind Orson Welles’ “Citizen Kane.” With 10 total nominations — including Best Picture, Best Director for Fincher, Best Actor for Oldman, Best Supporting Actress for Seyfried, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Editing, Best Costume Design, Best Hair & Makeup, Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, and Best Score — the lavish black-and-white Netflix film is just the 96th feature in Academy Awards history to receive double-digit citations and the second-most lauded Fincher effort behind only “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.”

When the story is written about this year’s pandemic-afflicted Oscar nominations, the lede may not be about the effects of Covid at all. And it may not be that the only theaters Oscar voters saw the contenders in were drive-ins. And it may not be that three of the Best Picture nominees actually qualified through streaming. And it may not be that two women are competing against each other for Best Director and that between them they have seven nominations. Or it may not be that a record 70 different women took a huge 76 noms.

In this strangest and most difficult of years, voting on movies that few people have seen in actual movie theaters, Academy voters tried their best to pretend that this year’s Oscars can be business as usual.
In doing so, they came up with a lineup of nominations that kept “Nomadland” in good shape as a de facto front runner, gave a boost to “Promising Young Woman” and “The Father” and “Judas and the Black Messiah,” and put “Mank” atop the list of noms without indicating that it could really win Best Picture.
In fact, almost all of the main rivals to “Nomadland” came out of the morning with evident weaknesses. While Chloé Zhao’s American travelogue was nominated in all the crucial categories — picture, director, screenplay, acting and film editing — the others for the most part missed at least one key area:

There’s a good chance that “Mank,” David Fincher’s stylish black-and-white chronicle of veteran Hollywood screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz’ struggle to write the screenplay for Orson Welles’ 1941 masterpiece “Citizen Kane,” will dominate the Oscar nominations on March 15. Our Oscar experts are predicting the Netflix release could garner has many has 13 nominations including picture, director, screenplay for Fincher’s latest father Jack Fincher, actor for Gary Oldman and supporting actress for Amanda Seyfried.

Last night, the Golden Globe Awards held a bi-coastal event in Los Angeles and New York City, one designed to try and simulate some awards season normalcy. Of course, the 78th ceremony was anything but normal, even if things more or less went off with minimal hitches. Well, potentially very little, but sit tight there. For now, we just have the results from the Globes to consider. Check them out below… Here now are the results of the Golden Globe Awards: Best Supporting Actor, Motion Picture Daniel Kaluuya, Judas and the Black Messiah (Winner) Sacha Baron Cohen, The Trial of the Chicago 7 Jared Leto, The Little Things Bill Murray, On the Rocks Leslie Odom Jr., One Night in Miami Best Supporting Actor,...

The 78th Annual Golden Globes Awards are in the history books. It was a weird ceremony for a weird year, occasionally marked as much by the technical difficulties that came from using Zoom and telecommunications for awards speeches as it was by the winners. And yet, what a remarkable year for the winners it was.
After the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has been roundly (and rightly) criticized for snubbing women filmmakers for year after year in the Best Director category, Chinese helmer Chloé Zhao won the Director prize for her riveting and raw Nomadland, a film which blends documentary filmmaking with narrative; Daniel Kaluuya was able to (eventually) speak about the glories of Fred Hampton to a global audience after winning Best Supporting Actor with his role in Judas and the Black Messiah; Borat 2 is now a “Best Picture” winner (read that sentence back and let it sink in...

Aaron Sorkin added to his total Golden Globe win count as The Trial of the Chicago 7 director took home his third prize on Sunday. During the annual awards ceremony, hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, Sorkin took home the best screenplay prize.
Sorkin’s legal drama centers a group of protesters accused of crossing state lines to cause a riot at the 1968 Chicago Democratic National Convention, and the subsequent trial in which they are tried as insurgents and instigators. Aaron Sorkin probably needs to consider clearing another shelf in his house. The prolific writer added yet another award to his already lengthy résumé during Sunday’s 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards when he took home the Globe for Best Screenplay for Netflix’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” which he also directed.
With this win, Sorkin tied the record for most victories in the screenplay category at three. Only two others have that many to their name: Quentin Tarantino, who took home the Golden Globe for “Pulp Fiction” (1994), “Django Unchained” (2012) and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” last year, and Robert Bolt, who went 3-for-3 for “Doctor Zhivago” (1965), “A Man for All Seasons” (1966) and “The Mission” (1986).
Sorkin previously took home the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay for writing both “The Social Network” (2010) and “Steve Jobs” (2015) but he has been nominated in the category a total of eight times.

Since the academy expanded the Best Picture category at the Oscars in 2010, Best Original Screenplay has gone to writers of a wide-range of genres: dramas; comedies (“Midnight in Paris”); biopics; true-life stories (“Spotlight”); period pictures (“Django Unchained”); war movies (“The Hurt Locker”); sci-fi (“Her”), thrillers (“Parasite”) and horror (“Get Out”). Regardless of the type of film, a nominee needs broad academy support to win this race. Indeed, all 11 of these most recent Best Original Screenplay winners were, at the least, Best Picture nominees. And six of them won the big prize, bringing the total number of Best Picture champs with Oscar-winning original screenplays to 18. By comparison, 41 films have done this on the adapted side.

As of this writing, Chloé Zhao is predicted with 16/5 odds to win the Golden Globe for Best Film Director for her work on “Nomadland,” based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. If she wins, she would not only become the first woman of color to win that award, but the first woman to have ever accomplished that since Barbra Streisand for “Yentl” back in 1983. However, David Fincher‘s stylish work on “Mank” fits the mold of the most directed movie, which might’ve been what helped Sam Mendes win this award for the technically ambitious “1917” last year over eventual Oscar winner Bong Joon-ho (“Parasite”). So could that factor help Fincher win this year?

With 11 feature films under his belt, David Fincher is widely regarded as one of the leading directors of his generation, and one of the very best when it comes to tapping into the darker aspects of humanity. He has made a name for himself by presenting complex characters in uncomfortably realistic situations wherein they are forced to grapple with their most primitive emotions. His most well-received film, “The Social Network,” is far from the most harrowing tale in his catalogue, yet demonstrates his trademark style. In the decade since its release, his mostly true account of the creation of Facebook has stood as a lasting examination of toxic masculinity and the power of greed.
His latest film, “Mank,” is much lighter fare by comparison, but conveys a similar message. The film, which started streaming on Netflix last December, painstakingly traces the development of 1941’s “Citizen Kane,” often cited as the greatest film ever made.

Exclusive: David Fincher’s Mank has been near the top of the heap this awards season, scoring the most nominations at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards and a place on the AFI Top 10 movies of 2020 for the take on the relationship of screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz and Orson Welles during the writing of the iconic Citizen Kane.
Those noms include posthumous recognition for the screenplay, written by Fincher’s father Jack, who died in 2003. It was David who encouraged his dad to explore the story between the two men, along with it the idea of taking responsibility for one’s ideas put into the world, and the reality-altering power that creates.
The evolution of the script, as Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr. put it after its Globes nomination: “After retiring, [Jack Fincher] turned to crafting a script about the behind the scenes on a movie he loved, Citizen Kane.
