The retaliatory ban on all things Russian by businesses, organizations, and individuals concerned with that country’s Ukraine invasion continued today. The Fiapf (Fédération Internationale des Associations de Producteurs de Films, translated as the International Federation of Film Producers Associations) has acted against two film festivals from that country. The organization announced earlier today that the Moscow International Film Festival and Message to Man International Film Festival have had their accreditation paused “until further notice.” The Fiapf, created in 1933, has 36 member associations and provides accreditations to 47 film festivals. It helps producers deal with copyright issues, intellectual property rights, anti-piracy, technology standardization and trade issues. Being accredited by the Fiapf means that a festival commits itself to implementing standards defined by Fiapf members, including clear procedures for submission and competition, and concern regarding the security of screeners, prints and piracy in theatres. Essentially, it means a loss of prestige and favor among international film festivals,...

Update The Metropolitan Opera has announced that it will “no longer engage with artists or institutions that support Putin or are supported by him.”
The announcement, made on the Met’s website in a brief video statement by General Manager Peter Gelb, comes several days after another major New York cultural institution, Carnegie Hall, announced that Russian conductor Valery Gergiev and pianist Denis Matsuev, both longtime Putin supporters, would not participate in a performance of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra this past weekend.
In Gelb’s video statement, the general manager says, “While we believe strongly in the warm friendship and cultural exchange that has long existed between the artists and artistic institutions of Russia and the United States, we can no longer engage with artists or institutions that support Putin or are supported by him.” Gelb states that the new policy will remain in effect “until the invasion and killing has been stopped,...

Xavier Koller’s Die Schwarzen Bruder and Markus Imboden’s Am Hang are among a trio of new Swiss films announced as part of the Zurich Film Festival (September 26 – October 6).
Adapted from the successful children’s book of the same name, Koller’s family-history follows chimney sweep boys who escape from the drudgery of city life back to their mountain villages. The film premieres in the festival’s new Children’s and Family Films strand.
Koller’s drama Journey of Hope won the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar in 1990.
The Foster Boy director Markus Imboden’s next effort is an adaption of Markus Werner’s novel Am Hang, in which two men get involved with a female phantom that draws them dangerously close to each other. Martina Gedeck, Henry Hübchen and Max Simonischek star.

The thing about Pierre Monteux's May 29, 1913 premiere of Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring), by Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris for Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, is that it's not just the anniversary of the first time a famous piece was played in public. It's the anniversary of the most famous scandal in music history (and ballet history).
The audience was so violently divided in their opinions of the performance that there was an actual riot; there are widely disparate accounts of the evening, and some say the police removed some audience members, so contentious did things become. The orchestra was bombarded with projectiles, and the audience's vocal disapproval (combined with Rite supporters' vocal disapproval of the anti-Rite faction's demonstrations) drowned out the music often enough that the choreographer, Vaslav Nijinsky, had to spend much of the performance standing in the wings shouting directions to the dancers,...

To the Wonder will finally, finally unveil itself at the Venice Film Festival on Sunday, and reviews from scenic Italy would, normally, be the most substantial reports on the film so far. A few days out from its first screening, after all, the closest thing to an update involves those who didn’t make it past Terrence Malick’s editing scissors.
Update: The first reviews have arrived from Venice, check them out here and read on for more details below.
Before that, we’ve got something which, if you’ll excuse the overwhelming bravado, peels back far more layers than anything else up to this point, possibly more than anything short of seeing the actual film. “That’s not saying much,” one could argue, and they’d be right — again, you only know Rachel Weisz probably won’t attend the premiere — so how about a full synopsis, eye-opening comments from Ben Affleck,...

3 Film The Amazing Spider-Man

Here's what I have to say to all the people who bemoan the state of classical music: My classical list is the last one I'm posting (as has often been the case) because there were so many great releases to listen to that I didn't finish until now.
I want to once again admit the biases operating in my best-of-the-year classical lists: I am most interested in the piano, choral, and symphonic literatures. I’m happy to listen to other things when they come my way, but those are what I seek out, vastly tipping the balance in their favor (tipping the balance against opera is the increasing disinclination of record companies to send promos for new opera recordings unless one specifically asks -- and even that is no guarantee). Also note: no reissues or compilations here. That disqualified even the first box-set appearance of David Zinman's fine Mahler cycle,...

Fathom Events, the folks that brought Rise to theaters earlier this year, is upping the ante this July, when the bring Giselle to theaters in 3D. Before you say it, lemme just stop you right there; no, it’s not the model. It’s the ballet. And yeah, it’s kinda badass for a ballet. We’re talking madness, death, vengeful ghosts and dancing a cemetery. Even with the “not your momma’s ballet” type of storyline, Giselle is one of the most popular roles in ballet (all apologies to Black Swan.) So the dancing? Will be epic.
So that’s the good news. The bad? It’s in limited release, the only theaters showing it in the Baltimore area are Snowden Square in Columbia and Cinemark Egyptian at Arundel Mills. And it’s a one-day-only showing, on July 12th at noon and 7:30pm.

On April 29th, Time.com announced the winners of its Time 100 poll – the 100 most influential people based on public vote. Among this list was none other than “Twilight’s” Robert Pattinson, ranked as the 6th most influential artist in the world and the #1 most influential actor among this group. He is only surpassed by Lady Gaga, Conan O’Brien, Kathryn Bigelow, Oprah Winfrey and Valery Gergiev. Also of note is that Summit Entertainment has worked with both Pattinson and Bigelow.
Though Pattinson has collaborated with a number people in the film and music industry, it was “New Moon” director Chris Weitz who wrote Rob’s tribute. Weitz is extremely attune to how his every move, really anything related to Rob, spreads like wildfire not only across the internet, but among print as well. Time Magazine released its list of the Most Influential People in America, and I guess that the most surprising name on there is not Glen Beck or Sarah Palin -- who are unfortunately very influential. It's not even Ashton Kutcher, whose influence is elusive to me, although not to Sean P.Diddy Combs, who wrote up his profile:
What he and Demi do with Twitter is a good example. Most people use it to promote themselves, but he uses Twitter to connect, to strike up conversations, to send positive messages to the millions of people who read his words. This guy will show us the future. And it's gonna be a blast.
Lady GaGa and Robert Pattinson: I see their influence, although I wish I didn't. Taylor Swift likewise. Neil Patrick Harris and Neill Blomkamp are surprising, but in a good way. As are Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof.

Grammy Award winning singer Taylor Swift and attention-getting heartthrob Robert Pattinson have made their way to the list of Time's 100 Most Influential People of 2010. The "Love Story" singer is in number nine on the list, while the Edward Cullen of "Twilight" has his name in number 6.
On Taylor, Fleetwood Mac's legend Stevie Nicks wrote, "Taylor reminds me of myself in her determination and her childlike nature. It's an innocence that's so special and so rare." She added, "This girl writes the songs that make the whole world sing, like Neil Diamond or Elton John. I still walk around singing her song 'Today Was a Fairytale'."
Meanwhile, "The Twilight Saga's New Moon" 's director Chris Weitz also wrote about his star, stating "We haven't seen a tenth of what he can do onscreen. I love you, Rob! Call me!" Taylor and Robert join 25 other artists who also make it to the cut.

Indians who made it to the list are Prime Minister Manmohan Singh (3rd time), Sachin Tendulkar (1st time) and Chetan Bhagat (1st time).
Unfortunately Shah Rukh Khan (0 times) couldn't make it to the list. Preity Zinta (0 times) was also said to be in the running, but she couldn't make it either!
Interestingly, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan made a wild card entry into the Time 100 Alumnae list along with the likes of Condoleezza Rice, Sarah Palin, Alicia Keys and Serena Williams. Lady Gaga and Conan O'Brien are the world's most influential artists. Time magazine has unveiled their annual Time 100 issue, in which it names 100 names that make it to the World's Most Influential People list.
The magazine divided their categories into four - Leaders, Heroes, Artists, and Thinkers - with 25 names in each. The "Telephone" hitmaker and the ousted "Tonight Show" host came in at first and second place respectively in the Artists category.

The Infernal Comedy, based on true story of Austrian serial killer, among highlights of Barbican's plans for coming year
It might not be the cheeriest night out, watching John Malkovich as a resurrected Austrian serial killer on stage with a baroque orchestra and two sopranos singing arias about murder and abandonment, but it will, the Barbican's artistic director cheerfully suggests, be one of his personal highlights.
"It's a kind of 21st-century version of an 18th-century melodrama," said Graham Sheffield. "Absolutely brilliant and completely unique."
The Malkovich piece, The Infernal Comedy – part drama, part concert – is based on the true story of Jack Unterweger, who killed at least 11 prostitutes. "Probably not a thing to take a person on a first date," Sheffield conceded.
The show was announced today as part of the Barbican's plans for the coming year, along with the return of big-name regulars such as Peter Brook, with The Magic Flute; Michael Clark,...

If you watched the closing ceremonies of the Olympics, you may have come away with the impression that Russia's culture is a little more...mmm...high-brow than Canada's. (Please don't think I'm necessarily complaining about this, though.) They have the Bolshoi Ballet, we have giant floating beavers; they have Valeri Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra (who, incidentally, will be at the National Arts Centre on March 15), we have William Shatner and a sadly under-used Catherine O'Hara telling vRead More...

St. Petersburg's Mariinsky Orchestra (formerly known as the Kirov) will be performing at the National Arts Centre on March 15, with superstar conductor Valery Gergiev. Gergiev is a fascinating personality, as this article attests: maestro, businessman, jet-setter, Russian nationalist and friend of Vladimir Putin; and, according to a review of a documentary about him, the possessor of "an elemental ferocity just barely held in check." ...

An unabashed sales job for symphonic Russian legend Valery Gergiev produces some of the most beautiful music in any video as well as some insight into the current maestro of maestros Yes the film is a sales job for Gergiev and the Russian Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. But both of them deserve a sales job because they are tow of the best kept secrets in the world of classical music. Gergiev is not only the benevolent dictator of the Mariinsky state sponsored music universe but he fills in his spare time as artistic director for the London Symphony Orchestra and also runs several music festivals in the arts capitols of the world. He would appear to work the...

2009 is about to end with a bang, though probably not the apocalyptic kind predicted in the long-awaited adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" or Chris Smith's terrifying doc "Collapse," though those will both be playing at your local arthouse. Instead, audiences will be able to enjoy a winter of wildly different indie film offerings to reflect the wildly different tastes of moviegoers as we leave one decade and move into another. (There are also many different ways to watch them, as you can tell from our Anywhere But a Movie Theater section.)
From November through January, there will be musicals ("Nine"), comedies (Broken Lizard's "The Slammin' Salmon") and stop-motion animated wonderments ("A Town Called Panic") to entertain and new films from Michael Haneke, Pedro Almodóvar, Richard Linklater, Terry Gilliam and Werner Herzog to ponder. And if new movies aren't necessarily doing the trick, you can always cozy...
