So You Think You Can Dance‘s unconventional 18th season came to a close on Monday night, with a finale that actually did feel more like the show we used to know.
Although the Fox competition has largely traded in its usual format for a pre-taped, weekly-industry-challenge approach — I previously wrote about why that pivot hurt the show more than it helped — Monday’s finale went back to basics, asking finalists Dakayla, Anthony and Madison to perform regular duets that might help them clinch the big win.

On “So You Think You Can Dance” season 18, “Challenge #1: Music Videos” led to the ousters of two female finalists: Avery Gay and Olivia Alboher. Then in “Challenge #2: Broadway,” two male contestants got the boot: Roman Nevinchanyi and Braylon Browner. That left six contestants to compete in “Challenge #3: Movies”: Madison Alvarado, Anthony Curley, Mariyah Hawkins, Easton Magliarditi, Jaylin Sanders and Dakayla Wilson. So what happened when they left the stage behind and headed for the big screen?
“It’s time to pull up a chair and grab some popcorn because it’s movie week,” says Cat Deeley at the start of the episode following a “Breakfast Club”-esque cinematic hip-hop dance routine with the top six portraying students in Saturday detention. But just barely escaping detention last week were Anthony and Dakayla, who were in the bottom four but survived the dance-off.

Wajda takes three young entrepreneurs and follows their greed and ambition to toxic capitalism’s logical conclusion in this queasily disturbing satire
Andrzej Wajda’s queasily compelling film from 1975, adapted by him from a novel by Wladysław Reymont, is an expressionist comic opera of toxic capitalism and bad faith, carried out by jittery entrepreneurs whose skills include insider trading, worker-exploitation and burning down failing businesses for the insurance. It is set in late 19th-century Łódź, a supposed promised land of free enterprise, whose night skies are shown by Wajda as more or less permanently red with factories set ablaze.
Our three gruesome heroes are Karol (Daniel Olbrychski) who is a Pole, Maks (Andrzej Seweryn) who is German, and Moryc (Wojciech Pszoniak) who is Jewish; this last being considered in these times effectively a separate nationality, and in fact the uneasy suspicion between these identities creates something a little like the mood in Danzig,...

Many dancers auditioned for a chance to compete on “So You Think You Can Dance” for season 18. Dozens were sent through to the choreography round by judges Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Comfort Fedoke and Allison Holker. But only 10 can advance from here.
“Dancers, are you ready? Judges, are you ready?” asks host Cat Deeley to enthusiastic cheers at the start of “The Final Auditions: Top Ten Revealed.” Allison then tells the dancers what they can expect, including the fact that this round of auditions will only last one day and will end with the selection of the top 10 dancers moving on, which seems to take many of the contestants by surprise. “Those 10 of you, who move forward will experience the challenges of actual working dancers, and let me remind you, only one of you will win $100,000.”

Maksim Chmerkovskiy is misunderstood.
At least that’s what he’ll say if you ask. The professional dancer, who previously competed on 17 seasons of “Dancing With the Stars” and won once, left the ABC series in 2017 and has a brand new role: judge on Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance.” Oddly enough, he’s best known for challenging the judges on his former show.
