The premium cable movie channel Starz has reportedly canceled three of their shows plus one upcoming project, according to Deadline. Starz will no longer be continuing the run of the wrestling drama Heels, as well as Run the World and Blindspotting. In addition, the channel has also decided not to proceed with The Venery of Samantha Bird. Heels, Run the World and Blindspotting have all completed two seasons, but The Venery of Samantha Bird was in the middle of production when the show paused for the strikes. Two episodes were left to film in the season.
Heels was produced by Lionsgate and Paramount Network Television and the plot, per Deadline, “revolves around the men and women who chase their dreams in the world of small-town pro wrestling. Set in a close-knit Georgia community, it follows a family-owned wrestling promotion as two brothers and rivals (Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig) war...

There are some big changes at Starz, and it's bad news for four shows.
Variety reported Monday evening that the premium cabler has canceled Heels, Run the World, and Blindspotting and is scrapping The Venery of Samantha Bird ahead of its premiere.
Heels, Run the World, and Blindspotting lasted for two seasons on the premium cabler, but it seems that the trio didn't have enough interest to sustain additional seasons.
The highest profile of the three shows was Heels, which starred Stephen Amell as Jack Spade, a man who inherited the league from his father.
However, he struggled to keep things running well, leading to plenty of drama across the two seasons.
The cast also included Alexander Ludwig, Chris Bauer, Mary McCormack, Kelli Berglund, Allen Maldonado, and Trey Tucker.
Rounding out the cast were Robby Ramos, Alice Barrett Mitchell, Roxton Garcia, David James Elliott, Joel Murray, and Cm Punk.

Starz has axed three existing drama series and one upcoming project.
The network has binned Heels, Run The World and Blindspotting as well as not moving forward with The Venery of Samantha Bird.
Heels, Run The World and Blindspotting all aired two seasons and The Venery of Samantha Bird paused production in May due to the strikes with two episodes left to film.
Heels revolves around the men and women who chase their dreams in the world of small-town pro wrestling. Set in a close-knit Georgia community, it follows a family-owned wrestling promotion as two brothers and rivals (Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig) war over their late father’s legacy. In the ring, somebody must play the good guy and somebody must play their nemesis, the heel. But in the real world, those characters can be hard to live up to — or hard to leave behind.

Starz is canceling four of its series, Variety has learned exclusively. Specifically, “Heels,” “Run the World,” and “Blindspotting” will not get new seasons at the cable network, while “The Venery of Samantha Bird” Season 1 is being scrapped without airing.
“Heels,” “Run the World,” and “Blindspotting” all recently aired their second season at Starz, while “The Venery of Samantha Bird” was in production on its first season. Production was shut down, however, at the onset of the WGA strike. It was reported at the time that only two episodes of the first season were left to shoot.
“The Venery of Samantha Bird” was to star Katherine Langford as the title character. Per the official logline, “Samantha, while visiting family in New England, reconnects with her childhood sweetheart and falls headlong into a seemingly perfect storybook romance. But the couple’s picture-perfect love story isn’t as sweet as it seems on the surface.

Starz announced the cancellation of four of its series, including “Blindspotting,” “Heels,” “Run the World” and “The Venery of Samantha Bird,” TheWrap has learned.
An individual with knowledge of the decisionmaking told TheWrap that the shows “unfortunately did not find a large enough audience” to be renewed for more episodes. A decision has yet to be made on the series “Minx,” which aired its Season 2 finale on Sept. 8.
The decision to remove the shows from the slate came after strong consideration, and per the insider, the network hopes to work with Rafael Casal (“Blindspotting”), Daveed Diggs (“Blindspotting”), Rachelle Williams-Benary (“Run the World”) and Mike O’Malley (“Heels”) in the future. Each of these shows have all aired their second seasons.
“The Venery of Samantha,” starring Katherine Langford and created by Anna Moriarty, only had two more episodes of its first season left to film, but the writers’ and actors’ strikes impacted its cancellation.

It started with a movie that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2018, examining the delicate balance navigated by a Black man almost at the end of his parole. It came two and a half years before the explosion of the Black Lives Matter movement but managed to capture that social sentiment in an accessible way laced with humor and heart. A spin-off TV series made sense, but opting to make it without the onscreen star power of Daveed Diggs was certainly a brave choice. Fortunately, Starz’s “Blindspotting” has been a wonder to behold, and season two only continues to show what audiences likely didn’t even realize was missing from everything else they’ve been watching.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” recalls Helen Hunt of her initial reaction to Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs’ plan to adapt their 2018 film “Blindspotting” into a series. The Oscar- and Emmy Award-winning actress was quickly won over, though, by the creators’ desire to focus the Starz show on Jasmine Cephas Jones’ character Ashley and the family of her longtime boyfriend Miles (Casal), who gets arrested in the first moments of the premiere episode. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Now at the conclusion of its second season — the finale aired on May 26 — “Blindspotting” chronicles the struggles that the couple, their son Sean (Atticus Woodward), and their extended family and friends go through in the aftermath of Miles’ incarceration. “Blindspotting” seemed to neatly tie the story of Ashley (Jasmine Cephas Jones) and Miles (Rafael Casal) by the end of the Starz comedy’s eventful Season 2 finale. But a surprise cameo in the episode’s final moments presented a nod to the show’s predecessor — and an exciting path forward.
The episode, titled “Return to Ithaca,” followed the aftermath of Miles’ surprise release from prison. He arrived back home near the end of the penultimate episode just as Trish (Jaylen Barron) confronted Ashley about kissing another man while Miles was in prison, which led them to a big rift in the couple’s relationship.
The finale followed as Ashley and Miles, along with the rest of their family, tried to figure out a way to move on after her betrayal and Miles’ surprise return. Though it took some time and difficult conversations, the couple was willing to put their troubles...

Spoiler Alert: This recap contains spoilers for Season 2, Episode 3 of “Blindspotting,” now streaming on Starz.
The latest episode of Starz’s “Blindspotting” forces Ashley (Jasmine Cephas Jones) and Miles (Rafael Casal) into parenting mode after their young son Sean, played by Atticus Woodward, uses the N-word.
Titled “N*ggaz and Jesus,” Ashley takes Sean to visit Miles (Rafael Casal) who is serving a five-year sentence at San Quentin State Prison. It’s a tough but necessary conversation as they teach Sean why using the word is wrong.
The moment comes during a conversation when Sean unexpectedly blurts the word out, but Sean presses and they are forced to discuss it with the boy.
Producer Jess Wu Calder stepped in to make her directorial debut with the episode and says it was “the most terrifying thing I’ve ever done.” In the script, Calder explains the line said, “Sean learns about...

Jess Wu Calder didn’t envision becoming a director, but she jumped at the chance during Season 2 of “Blindspotting” — even after learning her directorial debut would be one of the series’ most challenging episodes yet.
Episode 3 of the Starz comedy’s second season follows Ashley (Jasmine Cephas Jones) and her son Sean (Atticus Woodward) as they go on their first family weekend visitation to San Quentin State Prison, where husband and dad Miles (Rafael Casal) is serving a five-year sentence. “Blindspotting” is welcoming viewers back into the ordeal, and Jasmine Cephas Jones’ Ashley is about ready to explode.
The Starz comedy series from creators Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs, based on the film of the same name, returns for a new eight-episode season Friday. The show kicked off its action last season after Ashley found herself having to move in with her boyfriend Miles’ (Casal) mother Rainey (Helen Hunt), along with her son Sean (Atticus Woodward), after Miles was arrested and sentenced to five years in prison. Season 1 was a critical success for its genre-blending format that incorporated dance and verse sequences to complement the story.
The new season picks up nine months after Miles’ incarceration, and Ashley is on the edge.

“Welcome back to the ordeal,” young mom Ashley Rose (Jasmine Cephas Jones) says straight-to-camera in the return of Blindspotting, Starz‘s vibrant comedy set in cross-cultural Oakland, California. Season 2 picks up nine months after the events of the 2021 finale, which featured Ashley’s jailhouse wedding to true love Miles (Rafael Casal), her partner of 12 years, and the father of her son Sean (Atticus Woodward). “Ashley’s loyal, honest, and loving character is challenged,” Jones says. “She isn’t coping with her trauma in a healthy way. She loses herself down a path of self-destruction.” Things that don’t help that spiral: living (and clashing with) her mother-in-law, Rainey (Helen Hunt), and a “family visit” with Miles, whose world in prison is a stark contrast to her own. But what could be dark subject matter is far from it thanks to Jones and the series’ unique mashup of genres, which includes...

At the “Blindspotting” premiere at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery on Sunday, cast member Candace Nicholas-Lippman highlighted the significance of television programming about communities of color.
“I want young girls, Black and brown, biracial girls, I want them to be able to see themselves when they look at us on screen, to know that someone that looks like Janelle, you look like her, you can do this, too,” Nicholas-Lippman, who plays Janelle, told Variety.

“Blindspotting” moves like a song: from opening verse to swelling chorus, emotional bridge and back again. Sometimes, this manifests quite literally, as the characters turn to the camera and burst into emphatic spoken word, turn on their heels and break into a staccato dance, or dream up an entire music video starring themselves. Other times, scenes just rock back and forth between banter and mood swings as everyone grapples with a new twist in their ever-complicating lives. It’s a lyrical series with so much to say that it sometimes stumbles over its words, but always with style.
The new Starz show acts less as an adaptation of Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal’s 2018 film of the same name than a continuation of it. Set six months later, the show picks up with Diggs’ character Collin building a new life somewhere offscreen in Montana as his best friend Miles (Casal...

In 2018 Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs wrote and starred in “Blindspotting,” a look at the gentrification of Oakland alongside a parolee witnessing an officer-involved shooting. The film was bold, in-your-face, and utterly fantastic. How could lightning possibly strike twice? That comes in the form of Starz’s television adaptation, also called “Blindspotting.”
This expansion of the existing feature isn’t as simple as plopping a new character in the same exact situation. There has to be enough material to extend for several episodes. Thankfully, Casal and Diggs crack the code, crafting a series that is, at times, hilarious, thought-provoking, lyrical, and provocative.
Jasmine Cephas Jones, who played Ashley in the original film, takes centerstage here. It’s New Year’s Eve, presumably after the events of the film have concluded, and Ashley is ready to celebrate with Miles (Casal). Unfortunately, Miles is being arrested for drug possession, another screw-up in...

Blindspotting isn’t the most obvious candidate for a film-to-tv spinoff. The 2018 movie, co-written by Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs, who star as best friends in Oakland, made less than $5 million at the box office. It was well-reviewed but not a major awards player. And its stories — Diggs’ ex-con Collin finishes out his probation, while Casal’s Miles rails against gentrification — didn’t leave lots of open questions demanding a sequel, on the big or small screen.
But Blindspotting the series, debuting this weekend on Starz, is less a continuation...
