At the Palm Springs Film Awards on Thursday night, Meryl Streep made a rare public appearance and heaped some big praise on Barbie in the process.
Streep, who was on hand at the event to present Carey Mulligan with the International Star Award, took the stage following the presentation of an earlier award to Billie Eilish and Finneas for their hit song “What Was I Made For?” Before presenting to Mulligan, Streep told the duo, “I just want to say to Billie and Finneas that you have delivered the Barbie love bomb. You’ve saved the movies last summer and all of our jobs. You’ve delivered joy to countless generations and genders of people, and you should surf that wave, kids, until you’re old and deserve to be jaded like me.”

Bradley Cooper is breaking his silence on the backlash surrounding the prosthetic nose he wore in his new film Maestro, where he portrays real-life composer Leonard Bernstein.
Following the release of Netflix‘s trailer for the film, many people on social media voiced complaints about the large nose prosthetic worn by the 48-year-old actor, complaining that it represented a stereotypical portrayal of a Jewish person.
“Did it catch you off guard, the backlash,” Gayle King asked him in an interview with CBS.

He responded, “Nothing really catches me off guard. The truth is…I’d done this whole process out of love. And it’s so clear to me where I come from. My nose is very similar to Lenny’s, actually,” Bradley said.

Bradley Cooper wanted to fully immerse himself in the role of Leonard Bernstein for his sophomore directorial effort, “Maestro.”
That meant Cooper, who co-wrote, directed, produced, and starred in the Netflix film, after much prep work, would often only appear in front of cast and crew after he had physically transformed to resemble Bernstein. Makeup artist Kazu Hiro told Entertainment Weekly that Cooper spent over five hours in hair, makeup, and prosthetics prep to transform into the elderly composer/conductor, with “Maestro” spanning the majority of the composer’s adult life.
“The last stage, the whole time, our call time was one in the morning,” Hiro said. “The other thing was he wanted makeup to be finished before the crew call, so he would appear as Lenny to set up the shoot and everything. That also kind of made our call time two hours earlier than normal, so that was quite tough.

Bradley Cooper is having his “dream come true” at the 2023 Venice Film Festival, despite not attending due to the ongoing strikes.
Cooper’s sophomore directorial effort “Maestro” will premiere at this year’s festival; however, lead actor, director, co-writer, and producer Cooper will not be in attendance in solidarity with the actors’ and writers’ strikes.
Venice Film Festival director Alberto Barbera told The Guardian that Cooper “desperately” wanted “Maestro” to have its world premiere at the festival, where Cooper’s directorial debut “A Star Is Born” first debuted.
“So far the only filmmaker who definitely won’t be in Venice is Bradley Cooper, because he’s also the leading actor,” Barbera said. “He called me and said he desperately wanted the film to be in Venice, that it was his dream come true, but he doesn’t want to come against the strike. Update:
After catching flack for wearing a large prosthetic nose to play Leonard Berstein in the new biopic Maestro, the Anti-Defamation League is coming to Bradley Cooper’s defense. Discourse about Cooper’s portrayal of the world-famous conductor erupted after a trailer for the biographical romance arrived, showing Cooper’s version of Berstein in motion for the first time. Following the trailer, many said Cooper’s makeup promoted “Jewface,” Hollywood’s stereotypical or inauthentic portrayal of Jewish people, as defined by Variety. Now, the Maestro controversy is adding another perspective to the matter, thanks to the Anti-Defamation League.
Bernstein’s children immediately came to the actor’s defense, saying they worked closely with the filmmaker throughout production and loved his dedication to representing their father in a fair and accurate light. Now adding to the chorus of approval is the Anti-Defamation League, the Jewish organization fighting against bias and bigotry.

Bradley Cooper caught backlash for wearing a large prosthetic nose to portray Leonard Bernstein in “Maestro,” his upcoming biographical romance film about the late conductor. The controversy sparked the latest discourse about “Jewface,” Hollywood’s stereotypical or inauthentic portrayal of Jewish people.
But the Anti-Defamation League, the notable Jewish organization fighting against bias and bigotry, has come to Cooper’s defense, stating that his depiction of Bernstein is not antisemitic.
“Throughout history, Jews were often portrayed in antisemitic films and propaganda as evil caricatures with large, hooked noses,” the Adl said in a statement to Variety. “This film, which is a biopic on the legendary conductor Leonard Bernstein, is not that.”
The film, which premieres Sept. 2 at Venice Film Festival, centers on Bernstein’s tumultuous 25-year marriage to Felicia Montealegre, played by Carey Mulligan.

Some of the biggest Jewish organizations have no issues with Bradley Cooper’s portrayal of Leonard Bernstein in “Maestro”, despite some recent criticism.
The trailer for the upcoming flick dropped last week and some social media users weren’t happy with Cooper wearing a prosthetic nose to play the composer, calling the portrayal “Jewface.”
TMZ then spoke to the American Jewish Committee, who insisted the nose isn’t offensive, adding, “We do not believe that this depiction harms or denigrates the Jewish community.”

Bradley Cooper is facing social media backlash over his large prosthetic nose in the new film Maestro due to arguments over Jewish representation.
Netflix released the trailer for Maestro, which Cooper co-wrote with Josh Singer and stars in as the main character. When fans saw Cooper’s new nose it reignited an argument that began in May 2022 when Netflix shared stills of the movie. Critics called the film an example of “Jewface,” which is a term used to describe inauthentic or stereotypical representations of Jewish people.
The movie focuses on the Jewish conductor Leonard Bernstein and his relationship with his wife Felicia Montealegre. It will premiere at the Venice Film Festival at the end of August and is set to be released on November 22 in theaters and on December 20 on Netflix.

Leonard Bernstein’s three kids are coming to Bradley Cooper’s defence following criticism that the actor portrayed himself with “Jewface” in his upcoming biopic of the classical composer.
Cooper, 48, found himself facing the brunt of online flack when the trailer for his latest flick, “Maestro”, which follows the life story of the Jewish-American composer, dropped on Wednesday.
The trailer showcases the Oscar nominee’s prosthetic nose to highlight Bernstein’s appearance. However, some people online found the choice offensive. British actor Tracy-Ann Obermann said the choice parallels “Black-Face or Yellow-Face”, insisting a Jewish actor would have been fitter for the role.

Todd Field's Best Picture-nominated film "Tár" is such a compelling and realistically realized drama, that some audiences have left screenings convinced that the title character, an orchestra conductor named Lydia Tár (Cate Blanchett), is 100% real. The details of the classical film world were so stringent and meticulously researched for "Tár" that many simply believed they encountered a straight-up biography of a real-world celebrity that merely lay outside of their usual field of vision.
Some of the details in Field's screenplay, of course, are something of a giveaway. Lydia Tár, for instance, is an Egot, a rare achievement only gained by 18 people to date. Other details, however, were perhaps plausible. For instance, Lydia Tár is said to have studied under Leonard Bernstein, the famed conductor and composer. Bernstein's career as a lecturer and professor is long and prestigious, and the famous people he instructed are numerous. His body of work is so vast,...

No mentor/mentee relationship is more iconic than the fictional one between celebrity conductors Leonard Bernstein and Lydia Tár. But in recent months, the connection between the 20th-century music legend and the (also fictional) Egot-winning Berlin Philharmonic conductor has been called into question — by none other than Lydia Tár’s creator, director Todd Field.
In interviews for publications like Variety and The New Yorker, the director of Best Picture nominee “TÁR” revealed that various references the main character Lydia Tár (played by Cate Blanchett) makes to studying under Bernstein over the course of the film are, at least in his opinion, lies she tells in order to further her own public image.
“It would be good for the Bernstein estate to let her lie about her association with Leonard Bernstein, even if she maybe never even studied with him, because the optics of that association would be very, very good,...
