- Merv Smith was born on March 11, 1933 in Piopio, New Zealand. He was an actor, known for The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014), Buzzy Bee and Friends (2009) and This Giant Papier-Mâché Boulder Is Actually Really Heavy (2016). He died on September 24, 2018 in Auckland, New Zealand.
- Smith was for many years New Zealand's highest rated radio broadcaster, presenting the breakfast show on Auckland-based Radio 1ZB from 1961 until 1986.
- Smith was a passionate railway and railway modelling enthusiast. He wrote a book about model railways entitled "Little Trains of Thought", which was published in 1977.
