During Russell T Davies’ first time in charge of BBC behemoth Doctor Who, one of its regular writers often wrote some of its more memorable and popular stories.
Scottish writer, Steven Moffat, had made a sizable name for himself in the U.K. with television shows such as Press Gang and Coupling, and would bring new terrors to young Whovians in the form of Gask Mask Zombies and the Weeping Angels. When Davies came to leave the show, Moffat was the natural choice to replace him.
He cast Matt Smith (The Crown, House of the Dragon) as the youngest ever actor to play the role and made huge strides in the U.S. cementing Doctor Who’s popularity. Moffat would leave the role of showrunner after seven years (and after casting Peter Capaldi to play Smith’s successor).

When you think of Sean Connery, you probably think of either James Bond or Indiana Jones' dad. If you grew up in the '90s you might even think of that movie where he was on a submarine, or vaguely recall the marketing for a film where he played opposite Catherine Zeta-Jones. But there's no doubt that long before Connery was advising the "Hunt for Red October" director to rewrite the film's script, or complaining about "Entrapment" having too many special effects, he was best known as either England's greatest spy or as Dr. Henry Jones, Sr.
Still, when it comes to an actor as talented as Connery, not everyone thinks of these roles as his best. If you ask Christopher Nolan, for instance, he'll tell you that the Scottish star's finest performance came in Sidney Lumet's 1973 crime drama "The Offence," with Nolan recently celebrating the film for containing...

Sen. Tim Scott declined multiple times to commit to accepting the results of the 2024 election, regardless of who wins. Appearing on Meet the Press, the South Carolina Republican repeatedly dodged host Kristen Welker’s attempts to pin him down and get him to agree to accept the results of the election — a basic tenet of democracy. In doing so, Scott may be currying favor with Donald Trump, who is already pushing the false rhetoric that Democrats “cheat” in elections, and hoping to be Trump’s VP pick.

James McAvoy is rare among this new young breed of actors, as he has the ability to shift between offering heartbreaking sensitivity (“Atonement”) to displaying some serious action chops (“Atomic Blonde” and “Wanted”). The ability to toggle between these two attributes in such films as “The Last King of Scotland,” “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” and as the young Professor X in several films in the “X-Men” series that has made him internationally one of the most in-demand actors in the world.
Not only is McAvoy versatile in the kind of projects he selects, but he delivers, having earned two BAFTA nominations for his performances in “The Last King of Scotland” and “Atonement,” and a Golden Globe nom for “Atonement” as well.
Let’s raise up a glass to that great Scot with our photo gallery, which ranks his 10 greatest film performances from worst to best.

With Daniel Craig bowing out after his James Bond was blasted into the afterlife at the end of 2023's "No Time to Die," the question of who will take on the iconic role next has been following the franchise for quite some time. In 2024, as our cultural norms shift and evolve, there's no reason why the super spy couldn't be played by anybody — maybe even, dare I suggest, a woman?
Prior to the release of "No Time to Die," the internet was abuzz with rumors that British actress Lashana Lynch would be the next 007. When the film arrived, it was revealed that Lynch's character, Nomi, did indeed inherit the codename from her predecessor. Later in the film, however, she requests that the title be given back to Bond, after which she takes on the codename 005. So, we didn't get a female Bond, but we sort of did for...

The casual James Bond fan might think that author Ian Fleming invented all of 007's trademarks before his novels were adapted for the screen, but the truth is a lot more complex. One of the biggest influences on the Bond we've all come to know and love was director Terence Young, who oversaw the spy's first big-screen outing in 1962, "Dr. No." Without Young, Bond would have arguably failed. The filmmaker brought his sophistication, fashion sense, and humor to Bond, all of which would come to define the character in the popular consciousness.
Of course, Young undoubtedly benefited from having Sean Connery as his star. Playing James Bond was, however, a double-edged sword for Connery. The actor debuted as England's greatest spy in "Dr. No," but over the course of the next decade would punctuate his tenure as 007 with remarkably nuanced and powerful performances in such classics as 1965's "The Hill...

Murray’s win on Saturday was his ninth consecutive win on the grass court.
Last week, he became the oldest grass-court champion in Challenger history (since 1978) when he triumphed at the Lexus Surbiton Trophy.
The 36-year-old will chase his third Challenger Tour title of the year on Sunday when he meets Arthur Cazaux in the final. The NextGenATP Frenchman defeated Dominik Koepfer 7-5, 6-2 in another semi-final at the Challenger Tour 125 event.
In a dominant performance against Portugal’s Borges, Murray struck the ball cleanly on return, breaking four times to advance after 74 minutes. The Scot is up four spots to No. 40 in the Atp Live Rankings as he continues his quest to be seeded at Wimbledon next month.

Caitriona Balfe in ‘Outlander’ season 7 episode 1 (Photo Credit: Starz)
After a year-long Droughtlander, Starz’s Outlander season seven episode one leaps right into the action, with Claire (Caitriona Balfe) being hung as a murderer. Of course, that doesn’t really happen. Unfortunately for Jamie (Sam Heughan), it’s a vision that’s haunting his every waking minute since being forcibly separated from the love of his life.
Jamie feels deep in his bones that Claire is still alive and is committed to finding her. With Young Ian (John Bell) at his side, nothing will stop the determined Scot from reuniting with the missing piece of his heart.
Claire’s indeed alive and doing as well as can be expected, given that she’s locked up in a Wilmington jail. Margit Tolliver (Liza Sadovy) is in charge of the jail, and she lays down the basic rules of the facility. Claire...

Surbiton (England), June 11 (Ians) Andy Murray advanced to the Surbiton Challenger final after he ousted defending champion Jordan Thompson 7-6(5), 6-3 in the last four, here.
The Scot found rhythm from the start, jumping out to an early 3-0 lead. The Australian fought back to force a tie-break but Murray’s consistency and all-court coverage helped him move past Thompson in straight sets on Saturday.
Despite serving for the match at 5-2, Murray was broken before closing out the semi-final in the following game to set a clash against Austrian Jurij Rodionov.

Andy Murray is one step ahead of his competition during the 2023 grass-court season as he signed up for an Atp Challenger event in Surbiton.
Historically, grass courts have been the best for the 36-year-old who won two Grand Slam titles on the green surfaces as well as an Olympic gold medal. Therefore, it's not a surprise that after he experienced two disappointing losses on clay, the decision was made to skip the 2023 Roland Garros.
That gave Murray at least a couple of weeks that he's now ahead of the rest of the field, preparing on the grass courts. And already during the second week of the Roland Garros, the Scot will play a tournament on the grass court as he received a wild card for an Atp Challenger in Surbiton.

In Budd Boetticher’s 1959 parable of how we remember violence, “Ride Lonesome,” Randolph Scott confronts the man who killed his wife at the very spot where he murdered her.
“That was a long time ago,” the killer said. “I’d almost forgot.” Scott’s reply? “A man can do that.”
So too can a society. Especially when it’s all too convenient to forget things so unpleasant they may shake our very sense of identity. Felipe Galvez’s Chilean Western “The Settlers” may remind some viewers of a Boetticher film when they’re watching it: following three men on horseback on a cross-country journey, it dramatizes questions of identity and belonging, and how these things can be written in violence. Most Boetticher-like, in a tight 98 minutes “The Settlers” says more than a lot of films double its length. It’s one of the most chilling art-Westerns to come along in some time,...

Andy Murray won't be competing at the 2023 Roland Garros as the Scot withdrew from the Grand Slam tournament.
It's been quite some time since Murray last competed at the Roland Garros and even longer time since he won his last match in the French capital. His last participation came in 2020 and last win back in 2017, and that won't change this year.
And the fact that Murray hasn't won a match in Paris since 2017 doesn't apply only to the Roland Garros. The three-time Grand Slam champion also struggled at the Paris Masters, not winning a single match since his triumph in 2016.
But now, after a turbulent clay-court season, Murray finally made a decision about his participation in the second major of the season. There was a solid chance that he would have been one of the seeded players, but he still made the decision to withdraw from the tournament.

Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray met at the Atp Challenger event in Bordeaux in France, something they probably never expected to happen.
The two veterans have their Challenger days behind them, but in the second week of the Italian Open, the event in Bordeaux can serve as a great preparation for the upcoming Roland Garros, which can lose its biggest star.
The Scot, who recently broke a record for the longest gap between the first and the last Atp Challenger title, entered the tournament as the second seed and so he didn't have to play the first-round match.
On the other hand, Wawrinka took on qualifier Ugo Blanchet and beat him in two sets. All the eyes immediately turned to the second-round meeting between the two three-time Grand Slam champions which turned to be a historic match as it was the first of its kind.

Andy Murray made sure to make his thoughts heard after the first-round incident at the 2023 Italian Open in Rome.
After a triumphant run in Aix-En-Provence at an Atp Challenger event, Murray entered the 2023 Italian Open draw with high hopes, but his first-round opponent was a very difficult one as it was the home crowd favourite Fabio Fognini.
Although it was already quite difficult for Murray because of playing an Italian in the capital with a full stadium behind him, one situation in the first set made it even harder as Mohamed Lahyani made a wrong call after Fognini's lob.
Even during the match, the Scot was 100% sure that the ball was out as he kept repeating that to the umpire. When Lahyani came to check the mark initially, he said: "The linesman called it good, there's a little bit here, it's just touching there," pointing to a spot on the...

Rome, May 11 (Ians) Italian Fabio Fognini caused a big upset at home, earning his biggest win of the season when he defeated Scot Andy Murray at the Internazionali d’Italia.
Fognini, a former Top 10 player, has been going through a struggle in 2023 and had arrived at the Foro Italico with a 2-8 tour-level record. However, the Italian wild card thrilled the Rome crowd with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory to reach the second round after two hours and 54 minutes on Wednesday evening.
“For sure I’m happy because coming back from injury is never easy, especially at our age. But winning here in Rome against a really big player like Andy, I mean I’m happy,” Fognini said in his on-court interview.

A classic clash emerged between Fabio Fognini and Andy Murray at the 2023 Italian Open in Rome, marked by an umpire's controversial call.
The 2023 Italian Open got off to a good start when local hero emerged victorious against seasoned Scotsman. The match, which took place on a serene Wednesday evening at the Foro Italico, was anything but tranquil.
In a rollercoaster of a match, Fognini displayed remarkable resilience, and despite the turmoil of the year, managed to score his most significant victory of the season. Despite starting 2023 with a 2-8 Atp tour-level record, the Italian was able to show his heart in front of the home fans, in a first meeting gainst Murray since the heated Shanghai clash.
With the stakes high and the home crowd's eyes set on him, Fognini started the game with clear intent. He aimed to dictate the rhythm of the game, denying Murray the opportunity to execute his signature baseline strategy.

Andy Murray moved to his highest on the Atp Tour in over 5 years after he won an Atp Challenger event in France.
Every Monday, the Atp Rankings are updated, and when looking at the most recent update, the former world no. 1 certainly had a smile on his face. Back in 2018, Murray started the season as world no. 16, but he finished as the 839th ranked player due to injuries forcing him out of play.
Once he made his return to the Atp Tour, his highest came last year, when the Scot climbed up to 43rd place in September last year. However, this year, Murray slipped to 70th place and his dream of being seeded at a Grand Slam again seemed to be disappearing in the distance.
But it's been a trademark of Murray's career to never give up and always come back, and he did it once more. After a terrible start to the clay-court season,...

Andy Murray rewrote history books on Sunday afternoon in Aix-En-Provence in France when he lifted the Atp Challenger trophy.
It's been a great week for the former world no. 1, who was on a 4-match losing streak before entering the event, and even considered skipping the clay-court part of the season this year altogether.
However, Murray made a decision to accept a wild card for the Atp Challenger event in Aix-En-Provence and it was a great decision. In the first four matches that led up to the final, he faced only French players and defeated all home heroes before setting up his first final on the red dirt in seven years.
It was the first one for Murray since the 2016 Roland Garros, but there were more reasons why the final match against Tommy Paul from the United States was so important. It was 17 years and 9 months since the Scot won his...

For the first time since 2016, Andy Murray will fight for a title on red clay but this time at an Atp Challenger event.
Seven years ago, Murray played final in Madrid, won in Rome, and he also played a final at Roland Garros. Now, he suffered first-round exits in Monte Carlo and Madrid and opted to compete at the Atp Challenger event in Aix-En-Provence in France after receiving a wild card.
Already in the first round, the former world no. 1 clashed with Gael Monfils but managed to win the match in two sets. Little did he know that he will have to fight against three more French players at the tournament.
First, he defeated Laurent Lokoli in three sets and he also outplayed the highest-ranked teenager on the Atp Tour, Luca van Assche. In the semifinals, Murray took on former juniors world no. 1, Harold Mayot.

Andy Murray defeated Gael Monfils at an Atp Challenger in Aix En Provence to win his first clay-court match of the 2023 season.
If you're someone who stopped watching tennis 7 years ago and started just now, you're probably surprised to find out that three-time Grand Slam champion and former world no. 1, Andy Murray, and 11-time Atp title winner and former world no. 6, Gael Monfils, met in the first round of an Atp Challenger tournament.
But that's what just happened in France. While the Frenchman is returning from an injury in search of his old form, Murray is trying to get some matches under his belt after an early exit from the 2023 Madrid Open.
Both made the decision to sign up for a Challenger tournament and the tennis gods had a very good mood when making them clash already in the first round as two wild cards. The two met plenty of times before,...

Andy Murray is more determined than ever to compete for Wimbledon titles, despite still being limited by his health.
Former world number one and three-time Grand Slam champion has revealed his ambition to compete for Wimbledon titles once again, even though his body may not allow him to do that. After the 2023 Madrid Open loss, Murray was asked if he's going to compete at the Roland Garros and he expressed his desire to do that as he may not get another chance.
But when answering the question about the clay-court Grand Slam tournament, Murray mentioned also probably his favourite place in the world, the All England Club, where he won two major titles and one Olympic Gold Medal. He revealed that he still has an ambition to fight for titles there, even though that may seem to be unrealistic now.

Andy Murray, seeking his first clay win this season, eyes Roland Garros despite setbacks, uncertain of future opportunities.
After suffering three consecutive Atp Masters 1000 opening round defeats, including a recent loss to Andrea Vavassori at the Madrid Open, Andy Murray finds himself at a crossroads. Despite these setbacks, the former world number one has expressed his desire to compete at Roland Garros, fueled by the uncertainty of how many chances he may have left to do so.
Since 2018, the former world no. 1 competed only once at the Roland Garros, with a first-round loss to Stan Wawrinka after receiving a wild card. Despite never winning the event, the clay-court Grand Slam is the second most-successful for the Scot in terms of winning percentage, having won 78% of matches he played there (compared to 77% at Australian Open and 76% at US Open).

Andy Murray suffered a painful loss in the first round of the 2023 Madrid Open and extended his losing streak to four matches.
It all started going south for the Scot when he lost to compatriot Jack Draper in Indian Wells. Murray then also lost to Dusan Lajovic in Miami and his third consecutive loss came on the clay courts of the Monte-Carlo Country Club. At the 2023 Madrid Open, the former world no. 1 wanted to turn his luck around and the draw of the Atp 1000 event made it possible for him to do that.
Murray was drawn against world no. 164 Andrea Vavassori and so his chances of getting past the first obstacle were very high. Although, he initially considered skipping the clay-court season, Murray even added an Atp Challenger event on clay to his calendar and so he was surely hoping for a good showing in the Spanish capital.

London, April 25 (Ians) Manchester City hosts Arsenal on Wednesday night in what promises to be the decisive match of this season’s Premier League.
City goes into the match five points behind the league leaders but with two games in hand, and a repeat of their triumph at the Emirates Stadium earlier this campaign would leave them just two points behind their rivals.
Arsenal fought back from 2-0 and 3-1 down to take a point against Southampton on Friday but has conceded seven goals in three games. The bad news for coach Mikel Arteta is that defender William Saliba is unlikely to have recovered from his back injury to be able to play, while a hamstring problem will sideline City’s Nathan Ake.

New Delhi, April 13 (Ians) Former World no 1 tennis player Andy Murray has said that it is important to continue to talk about what’s actually happening in Ukraine instead of focusing on a handful of players who may or may not be able to participate in major tournaments.
Murray, who is a member of All England Lawn Tennis Club (Aeltc), said that the decision of lifting the ban from Russian and Belarusian players was “difficult” as the lack of support from the rest of the tennis world left Wimbledon with very little choice.
Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine last year, All-England Lawn Tennis Club (Aeltc) and Lawn Tennis Association (Lta) banned the Russian and Belarusian players from British tournaments including Wimbledon.
Last month, however, Wimbledon announced Russian and Belarusians would be readmitted in 2023, complying with appropriate conditions, including the requirement to sign a declaration of neutrality.

Andy Murray will compete at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters as he confirmed that he's traveling to Monaco.
Initially, the former world no. 1 was not supposed to qualify for the main draw of the first Atp 1000 clay-court event of the season, which runs from April 9th to 16th. But Murray benefited from a series of withdrawals from players such as Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Denis Shapovalov, and Gael Monfils.
Those withdrawals along with some others, pushed the 57th ranked Murray, who was entering as the 55th ranked, directly into the main draw. Yet, it was not clear if the Scot won't add his name to the long list of withdrawals as it wouldn't be the first time that he would skip the clay-court season to save his body for grass.
But that won't be the case in 2023. On social media, Muray shared a quick update from his life with fans.

Andy Murray must put a disappointing sunshine double behind him after suffering an early exit for the second event in a row at the Miami Open.
The 2013 champion was looking to bounce back from a third-round loss to compatriot Jack Draper at Indian Wells a week ago but came up short as he was beaten in straight sets 4-6, 5-7 by Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic at the Hard Rock Stadium.
Perhaps the strangest element of the pre-match talk was the stat that Murray and Lajovic had never crossed paths on-court before, despite Murray being on tour since 2005 and Lajovic from 2007 respectively.
And it showed early on as a cagey start saw both men hold firm on serve as they tried to work the other out, the Scot the first to pass up two break point opportunities. But as is so often the way with tennis the breakthrough happened against the run of play,...
