Archival Looks, Recycled Materials and Lab Grown Jewels Puts Spotlight on Sustainability at Met Gala
Fashion’s biggest night is star-studded event all around — usually with a focus on new clothes — but this year a less talked-about topic joined the conversation at the Met Gala in a big way: sustainability.
Monday night’s event kicked off with La La Anthony, a red carpet co-host for Vogue‘s livestream, proudly declaring that she was wearing “pre-loved vintage accessories” from eBay. The announcement set the stage for some of the celebrities who Anthony and her co-hosts, Gwendoline Christie and Ashley Graham, interviewed throughout the night who also showcased their sustainable red-carpet choices.
Designer Stella McCartney was joined by actress and model Cara Delevingne, singer FKA Twigs and singer Ed Sheeran on the Met Gala red carpet. The British designer created custom looks for each of her guests, all made from 100 percent sustainable materials.
The designer’s brand collaborated with sustainable jewelry company Vrai for Delevingne’s and Sheeran’s looks.

Her ability to command attention and exude elegance has made her a true icon. And her latest appearance on the red carpet only reaffirmed my admiration for her impeccable fashion sense.

There’s a myth in Hollywood that circulates around the start of every year that once all the Oscars have been handed, insiders can collectively catch their breath and resume a normal schedule. But that’s not really ever the case, especially for the fashion crowd that keeps a breakneck pace year-round.
That said, in the wake of the Academy Awards, there’s no better time to extend the congratulations and pats on the back one more round by honoring the linchpins of the red carpet season — celebrity stylists. That’s just what The Hollywood Reporter did on Wednesday with the rollout of the annual list of Hollywood’s Top 25 Stylists, published in print and online and toasted with a starry event at Sunset Tower co-hosted by Instagram.

Julia Roberts is sitting on a cozy chocolate-colored sofa in a villa at West Hollywood’s Sunset Marquis two days before the Oscars, gazing affectionately at her newest project. “This is all me,” she says, pausing for a moment and then flashing her unmistakable megawatt grin to confirm that she is, in fact, only kidding.
The Oscar winner did, however, have a hand in the creation of what’s elegantly placed on a luxe tray in front of her: a three-piece Chopard high jewelry set comprising a necklace, earrings and oversized ring (all one of a kind) featuring emeralds, turquoise and rubellite gemstones. The star here — aside from the A-lister who signed on to co-design the collection — is an emerald. Specifically, Chopard’s ethically mined Insofu emerald, a 6,225-carat Zambian stone purchased in rough form by Chopard, from which the green stones have been cut.

Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart returned to the red carpet together for the first time in almost five years to celebrate the world premiere of "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. The Hollywood couple, who tied the knot in 2010 after eight years of dating, flocked to the South of France on May 18 in matching black looks for the annual event - which could mark Ford's final "Indiana Jones" film shown there - and they looked joyful as ever as they held hands and posed for cameras.
Though Ford, 80, has attended numerous Hollywood events recently to promote his Indiana Jones reprisal, he and his wife haven't appeared on a red carpet together since the Academy's 10th annual Governors Awards in November 2018. Before they wed, Ford had been married twice to Mary Marquardt and Melissa Mathison, and he welcomed four kids from those relationships. He later adopted Flockhart's son Liam,...

To the casual observer, the fashion industry and all the glamorous red carpets, runways, photo shoots and campaigns where its wares are presented, posed and fawned over, the business can, at the very least, seem sprawling and intimidating.
But when you get a chance to peek behind the curtain — like The Hollywood Reporter did on Tuesday night during an intimate dinner co-hosted with Jimmy Choo at West Hollywood’s Sunset Tower to celebrate the magazine’s annual 25 Most Powerful Stylists list — the façade is stripped away to reveal something much more personal, familial even.
Actually, the most fitting description would be a family reunion — that is, if your relatives wear Loewe, Chanel or vintage Paco Rabanne paired with a chic pair of Jimmy Choos. But don’t take our word for it, trust real-life siblings Elle and Dakota Fanning who arrived together with their personal power stylist, honoree Samantha McMillen.

Rewear, repeat, three-peat … The verbiage summing up what’s new on the red carpet in the past year happens to center on what’s old, or at least previously worn. Sustainability and vintage were at the forefront of Hollywood fashion throughout awards season. THR‘s Stylist of the Year Elizabeth Stewart worked with Tár best actress nominee Cate Blanchett to create a red carpet campaign with the smallest environmental footprint possible. “The theme is Cate’s closet and celebrating it,” says Stewart, “and being as conscious as possible of the impact our choices can have.” Law Roach, who made worldwide headlines when he announced his retirement from styling March 14, outfitted Zendaya in internet-shattering 2002 Versace for the NAACP Image Awards. Also trending? A return to megawatt glamour, as evidenced by both Anne Hathaway with stylist Erin Walsh and Gucci glamazon Jodie Turner-Smith, who turned the Venice International Film Festival canals into her own catwalk,...

Among Chopard’s many bedazzling moments this awards season, Jodie Turner-Smith wowed in a jaw-dropping sapphire-and-diamond choker from the jeweler at the BAFTAs and Angela Bassett sparkled in more than 100 carats-worth of white diamond jewelry at the Golden Globes, while Emily Blunt, Sofia Carson and Eva Longoria shimmered in high-wattage Chopard creations at the 95th Academy Awards.
Now — having already starred in Chopard’s Happy Sport and Happy Diamonds campaigns since 2021 — Julia Roberts is stepping up as global ambassador for the Swiss jewelry and timepiece brand. In her new multiyear role, the Oscar-winning actress will represent all women’s watch, high jewelry and luxury jewelry collections.

Livia Firth’s Green Carpet Challenge is an ongoing commitment to championing the beauty of wearing sustainable brands on red carpets. Now, the initiative — which has worked over the years with such stars as Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, Lupita Nyong’o and Viola Davis — is releasing the Gcc Style Handbook in an effort to make sustainable dressing and styling as seamless as possible.
Geared toward Hollywood stylists and stars, the guide promotes four distinct avenues toward achieving environmentally conscious outfits: artisanal (looks from small businesses and local makers); bespoke (custom apparel that uses eco-friendly materials); vintage choices; and the re-wearing of dresses.
The guide can be found at greencarpetchallenge.com and it includes celebrity examples on stars including Zendaya (rewear), Zoe Saldana (vintage) and Emma Watson, who participated in the Green Carpet Challenge at the Met Gala in 2016 wearing a Calvin Klein gown made from recycled plastic bottles.

Cate Blanchett certainly brought the flower power to the 2022 Venice Film Festival. The Tar actress turned heads on the red carpet wearing a sleek black jumpsuit that was anything but basic, especially with the gorgeous arrangement that blossomed on top of the corseted bodice. When the announcement came that “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” the third movie in Channing Tatum’s male stripper franchise, had the greenlight, it was revealed the film would premiere directly on HBO Max. However, director Steven Soderbergh says a theatrical run is still on the table. “We’re talking about it,” Soderbergh told me recently while promoting the “Magic Mike Live” tour, which makes its North American debut in Miami in October. “It’s certainly hard to argue that this isn’t a movie that’s best seen in a theater, because we have the data. Stars Patricia Arquette, Britt Lower, Zach Cherry, Tramell Tillman, Dichen Lachman, Yul Vazquez, Jen Tullock and Michael Chernus, director Ben Stiller and creator Dan Erickson celebrated the finale of their Apple TV+ series on April 8 at Los Angeles’ DGA Theater. Whether she’s promoting a project or not, these red carpet looks are enough to keep us constantly tuning in. Lively doesn’t have a stylist. The jousting between stylists and designers for the fashion spoils will be every bit as fierce as the fight for the statuettes
Oscar night glory is not the sole preserve of those who go home with a gold statuette. The names who triumph on the red carpet will also find themselves rewarded with a substantial boost in fame, prestige and earning potential.
Lincoln is currently the bookies' favourite to win the best picture nomination. And yet the odds on director Steven Spielberg or leading man Daniel Day-Lewis being splashed across the front pages of newsstands around the world are considerably longer. That honour is likely to go to whichever actress is deemed to have won the battle for the red carpet.
A fairytale turn on the red carpet can be the moment that turns an actress into a Hollywood player. An idealised image is etched onto the consciousness of a television audience of 39 million people,...
