Sony Classical has announced the release of the original motion picture soundtrack of The Imitation Game, a biographical drama about the English code-breaker Alan Turing starring Benedict Cumberbatchand Keira Knightley. Composed by Alexandre Desplat, the score soundtrack will be available digitally on November 10 and on CDNovember 24.
The opening track of Desplat’s score for The Imitation Game introduces a descending, rippling keyboard theme that reappears in variations in later tracks – first as a string accompaniment that sets the mood for a tragic, dramatic story. The second track skillfully interprets its title, “Enigma” (a reference to both the man Alan Turing and to the code-breaking project that made him famous), with fascinating sounds that evoke the ping of a sonar location and the underwater world, thus playing on the main theme of the story. While “U-Boats” features military sounds, other tracks such as “Carrots and Peas” provide contrasting quietness and emotion,...

Paul Thomas Anderson's "Inherent Vice" is one step closer to being finished, and we'll let Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood explain: "I finished recording a soundtrack last week for Paul Thomas Anderson's next film 'Inherent Vice.' We recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, led by Clio Gould—they were fantastic," he told Sinfini Music. So, hooray for that. But could PTA already be brewing another film? Well, Scott Rudin—producer on "There Will Be Blood"—has teased he has another project in the pipeline with the director. Doing an awards season interview with Deadline (via Cigarettes & Red Vines), the producer said in passing, "I think we are a good frontline for the filmmakers we work with, and we’ve had a lot of success being that. I’m really proud of that. This is our third movie with the Coens, we just made our fifth with Wes Anderson,...

Looking back at the early days of cinema allows us not only the opportunity to see the development of our favourite medium but also discover the hidden gems which may have been forgotten.
Network Releasing are shining their own particular light on some of the lesser-known films from one of the most important studios in British cinema history. The Ealing Studios Rarities Collection Vol. 1 (out on the 8th of April) contains early works from directors such as Carol Reed and Basil Dean and we’ve got a clip and a couple of rare production images from the wonderfully named Cheer Up! for you today.
A struggling playwright hopes to market a musical comedy that he has written in collaboration with another equally penurious composer. Anxious to secure the backing of a millionaire, the two composers only succeed in making him angry — until, following a chain of misunderstandings, they finally emerge triumphant.

Russ Tamblyn, actor (Riff)
I first saw West Side Story on stage in 1958. I was in the army, having been conscripted while under contract to MGM. I caught the musical in New York, fell in love with it, bought the album, and memorised the whole thing. I wanted to be Tony, the Romeo character, so I learned all his songs.
When I came home from the army, the film part came up. But it wasn't with MGM – it was with United Artists. They wanted me to test for Tony and MGM allowed it. Later, I was told they'd narrowed it down to me and one other. Riff was never mentioned. I was pretty sure I didn't want that role, because my dancing wasn't great.

The Wicker Tree
Written by Robin Hardy
Directed by Robin Hardy
UK, 2011
Fans of British writer/director Robin Hardy’s 1973 film The Wicker Man will likely be nonplussed by his newest effort The Wicker Tree. Neither a sequel to nor a remake of the first film – and completely unrelated to the laughably awful Neil Labute version from 2006 – The Wicker Tree tries to follow Hardy’s earlier work in spirit, but it completely loses the thread early on.
American Brittania Nicol makes her acting debut as Beth Boothby, a born-again Christian pop singer who takes her boyfriend Steve (British newcomer Henry Garrett) with her on a mission to convert souls in Scotland. They find themselves in a small village which has a strange attachment to the old Celtic gods. This is the same basic structure as the 1973 film – devout Christian runs up against mysterious pagans – but the older film had Edward Woodward...

Many of you may recognise the name Nobuo Uematsu. Chances are even if you haven’t, you will have heard some of his music. You probably know it very well indeed. For 24 years now Nobuo Uematsu has provided scores for one of the most beloved gaming franchises of all time, the Final Fantasy series. Uematsu’s name is synonymous with the Final Fantasy games, and even the few recent titles he has not scored fully (Xii and Xiii) have his finger prints all over. Over the years Nobuo Uematsu has strived to bring his music to live audiences. One of his avenues for this has been his band The Black Mages, who cover classic themes from the Final Fantasy games in a rock/metal fusion. The other way Uematsu has spread his music beyond gaming sessions is through a series of concerts titled Distant Worlds. This year Uematsu took his show world wide,...

“Light and Dark are two sides of the same coin. One cannot live without the other”
Each of the Zelda games follows a very traditional story line. Some may say over used, but there’s no doubt that this formula has worked for countless films, games and books.
The rise of a hero who must rescue the princess from the clutches of an evil villain, that threatens to destroy the land/world/universe.
This is the bare bones of fantastic story telling and has been used by the most popular movies in pop culture.
Zelda has Link, Zelda and Ganondorf
Star Wars has Luke, Leah and Darth Vader.
Even Back to the Future has Marty,...

When Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) was 20, and mostly known to audiences as a pianist, Robert Schumann basically proclaimed him the great hope of German music in an article entitled "New Paths." In those days, the general lament was that no symphonist had been able to measure up to the mighty example of Beethoven. He started composing what could have become his first symphony in 1854; he got cold feet and turned it into his Piano Concerto No. 1, which was premiered in 1859. In that same period, Brahms wrote two Serenades for orchestra -- seemingly to practice dealing with the challenges of those forces -- and his String Sextet No. 1, a fairly grand work for a chamber piece. In 1862 he sent to Clara Schumann (Robert's widow, whom he loved) an early version of the first movement of what he announced would be his First Symphony (it did not yet have its glorious introduction). A decade later,...

The Hammersmith Apollo has been host to an array of acts over its 79-year life span. Its walls are a myriad of fame with signed pictures from Kylie to Kasabian making up the decor. However this week a very different performance graced the Apollo stage. The magic of one of the most successful video game franchises ever seen descended upon London for the closing night of the Legend of Zelda 25th Anniversary Symphony Concert.
The evening was hosted by none other than Robin Williams daughter, Zelda Williams. Yes, her namesake is due to her fathers’ love of the series, or so we are told. After relaying quips about her favourite Ocarina melody, Ms Williams introduced Nintendo legend Eiji Aonuma on stage to drum up the crowd. Having worked on the Zelda series for over 13 years, the crowd hung onto his every word, creating a cacophony whenever the “Z word” left his lips.

Freddie Holker, 12 – Homage to Lucian Freud, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
Disgusting. That's what I'm thinking; that's my gut instinct. It's reminiscent of the swimming-pool changing rooms back at school, where I'm scared to look at anything in case it offends someone. This is the Homage to Lucian Freud, one of Britain's best modern artists, who died on 20 July 2011. Seventeen paintings by Freud are displayed. I'm standing in an eerily plain room in the Metropolitan Museum of Art 3,000 miles away from where I'm comfortable.
The only painting I can easily look at is, funnily enough, Naked Man, Back View. The only one that doesn't contain full-frontal nudity offers full dorsal nudity. It shows a fat man plonked on a footstool. His sitting position pushing out roll...

Heiress Petra Ecclestone, 22, tied the knot over the weekend to businessman James Stunt and while the nuptials carried a hefty price tag, there were few surprises.
One would think if you're going to drop between $5 million and $7 million on a wedding, you'd go for something a bit different than Vera Wang and Andrea Bocelli. Of course, if you've recently dropped $85 million in cash to buy Aaron Spelling's mansion, $5 million for a wedding is really not that big of a deal.
The bride wore white. A $130,000 Vera Wang gown to be precise. The wedding was held at the same Italian castle where Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes got hitched in 2006 ($500,000 if you're looking to rent it out for your next fit). The 350 guests enjoyed a $6,500-a-bottle wine and Cristal champagne. Live music was provided by Bocelli, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Alicia Keys, the Black Eyed Peas and Eric Clapton (a family friend,...

Bernie Ecclestone's daughter Petra has got married in a lavish ceremony. The 22-year-old daughter of the motor racing billionaire exchanged vows with 28-year-old businessman James Stunt in an Italian ceremony on Saturday that reportedly cost £5 million ($$8.2 million). According to South Africa's Independent Online, virtually every aspect of the big day was imported from overseas; a Rolls-Royce from the Us, furniture from the UK, white roses from France and 100 chefs - also from France. The wedding took place at the Castello Odeschalchi castle in Bracciano near Rome where Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes got married in 2006. The nuptials were attended by celebrity guests including Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie and socialite Paris Hilton. The death of John Barry in January robbed the cinema world of one of its most outstanding soundtrack composers. This one-off memorial concert, co-produced by his widow Laurie and long-time Barry devotee David Arnold, featured his scores, meticulously recreated by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. It was a fittingly magnificent tribute.
Barry may have been long associated with the James Bond themes, but his five Oscars were awarded for non-Bond projects and this evening emphasised the breadth and variety of his lush, extravagant compositions. His string-laden theme to the iconic 1965 spy thriller The Ipcress File, preceded here by a tearful video tribute from its star, Michael Caine, remains a sublime exercise in muted, suspenseful menace.
Arguably Barry's greatest talent was his ability to skirt sentimentality while scoring even the most mawkish Hollywood movies, and the Royal Philharmonic's sumptuous arrangements captured the epic sweep of his brooding scores...

Cinema Retro's London photographer Mark Mawston reports on a very special evening in honor of a very special man.
By Mark Mawston
On one special day in June 2007 I found myself in dream land. Not only was John Barry playing the Meltdown festival that night but I was allowed access to the rehearsal of the show in the hope that I would gain some informal photographs of Barry. As it transpired, those formal shots did indeed happen - to an extent I simply could not have imagined, as towards the end of the rehearsal John's wife Laurie asked if I could return later that evening and take some intimate family portraits and some informal shots of John himself. This was a great honour, but that’s another story.
Cut to last Monday evening, another very special day in June. I found myself attending the Memorial concert of the great man himself.

He was one of Britain's foremost trumpeters with many popular credits
James Watson, who has died following a heart attack aged 59, was one of Britain's leading trumpet players – for a number of years the soloist of choice for major orchestral engagements. As artistic director and head of brass at the Royal Academy of Music, he was active also as a conductor and administrator, preparing students for the challenges of the profession with engaging enthusiasm and directness.
Supported by the Leicestershire musical family into which he was born, Watson became known from an early age for his prowess on the cornet. Not only did he become principal cornet of the Desford Colliery Band at the age of 11, but he also won both the junior and senior champion soloist of Great Britain titles in 1966, aged just 14. No matter how much stock you still put in Grammy nominations, the 2010 list of nominations does contain a milestone for gaming. Although Sid Meier's Civilization series is still pressing ahead in "Civilization 5" for PC and Mac and the Facebook-based "Civilization Network", "Civilization 4" is back in the spotlight as well, thanks to composer Christopher Tin, the Soweto Gospel Choir and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and their recording of the "Civ 4" theme "Baba Yetu," which has been nominated in the category of "Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalists."
The composition has since been put into rotation on Video Games Live setlists, and it also appears on Tin's album "Calling All Dawns," which nabbed him a second nomination in the category of "Best Classical Crossover Album" on Grammy.com. Tin's other video game credits include "World of Cars Online" and "Fantastic Four: The Rise of The Silver Surfer," according to a report on Gamasutra.

A huge number of British stars – including Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood, the Kaiser Chiefs' Ricky Wilson, Little Britain’s Matt Lucas, Jimmy Carr, Paloma Faith and Imogen Heap – will hit the stage in London on October 18 for the Concert For Care.
The concert will raise money for Care International, and will feature the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra playing some great film scores conducted by the composers themselves. The event is being organized by composer David Arnold.
Care tackles the underlying causes of poverty so that people can become self-sufficient. Recognizing that women and children suffer disproportionately from poverty, Care places special emphasis on working with women to create permanent social change. Care also delivers emergency aid to survivors of war and natural disasters, and helps people rebuild their lives.

Mumbai, Oct 8 – For him, “singing is like flying” as it brings total freedom. Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner aka Sting says he has decided to re-arrange his old compositions the orchestra way because he feels it will give them a new lease of life.
“I learn something about a song every night I sing it. I have total freedom and this is really what I like. Singing is like flying. You can swoop, you can soar, you can go fast, you can go slow,” Sting told Ians in an e-mail interview from London.
The multiple Grammy winning English musician collaborated with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for “Symphonicities”.

One thing that can really make or break a horror film is the choice of music for its soundtrack, and no one is more aware of that than Fetch producer Theodore Loscalzo, who dropped us a line with a little behind-the-scenes info on the scoring process for the film along with a few clips of the types of music we can expect to hear in the finished product.
"One of the things that makes Fetch special is the music that we have been so fortunate to include in the film, says Loscalzo. "One of the greatest challenges for any production is to find and have a score and music that supports and conveys the emotions that the director is working to create! London -- James Bond film composer David Arnold today announced details of his second annual Concert for Care, a charity event for Care International at the Royal Albert Hall on Oct. 18 that will feature one of the biggest ever gatherings of top movie composers.

Afterwards, at a reception on the Grand Tier, a man approached Sting and glamorous wife Trudie Styler (wearing a knockout floor length Valentino gown and an eye popping diamond necklace) and introduced himself as their new neighbor on Central Park West. “I’m Sandy Weill,” said the former head of Citigroup and American Express. Well, we have had a roller coaster of an Easter Weekend - it all started on Easter Friday when we sat in for Nihal and then hot footed it to the suburbs of Harrow to watch Raj Kanwar's Sadiyaan. We have to say that although the reviews have been mixed, for us it was an absolute pleasure to see to divatastic legends - Hema Malini and Rekha on screen. They were simply superb.
Director Raj Kanwar revealed that the film was inspired by true events told to him by his late mother - a partition tragedy made good. He is a very passionate director who believes that Indian values of emotionalism are the key the success of Bollywood cinema. We were impressed by the candour of the newcomer and leading man Luv Sinha - he seems very focussed and looking forward to developing his craft further and is positive taking all the criticism.
