The team behind Rap Sh!t is weighing in after news broke Thursday that Max canceled the comedy series following a two-season run.
Created by Issa Rae, Rap Sh!t starred Aida Osman (Shawna) and KaMillion (Mia) as two friends who reconnect in Miami and form a rap duo. The show’s second season launch was delayed to November 2023 due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, with the season finale debuting Dec. 21.
“A real ass group of people,” showrunner Syreeta Singleton captioned an Instagram post that featured video of the show’s writing staff. “The best writers room ever. I will cherish this experience forever and ever. #seduceandscheme for life.”
Among those commenting on the post was co-star Daisy Fernandez (Peaches), who wrote, “Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this incredible show. I am forever grateful to y’all! I can’t wait to see what amazing things you do next.

Max has opted not to proceed with a third season of Issa Rae’s comedy series Rap Sh!t. The decision comes a month after the show’s Season 2 finale dropped on the streamer.
The second season of Rap Sh!t, originally scheduled for an August 10 debut, was pushed to November because of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes with the hope of giving it a better shot by having the creative team and cast promote it.
Max, along with other streamers, has been trimming its lineup of originals. Rap Sh!t‘s cancellation leaves five returning comedy series on the platform: Hacks, And Just Like That…, The Sex Lives of College Girls, Peacemaker and the recently renewed Bookie.

For Issa Rae, music has always been an extra cast member on the call sheet.
The nine-time Emmy nominee has used music as a storytelling tool, extending the voices of her complex and comedic characters — from the groundbreaking series Insecure and to her current adventure Rap Sh!t to the web series that launched her career, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl.
“Music elevates the storytelling of everything. I write to music, [and] you can have a scene that plays out great but music will add that little bit of tension, or that spark, or that feeling. It will cement a scene in your brain,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter. “There are so many songs that I associate with specific scenes that have also, in turn, affected my life and my memories, and it just adds an extra feeling to that song. So, they really work hand-in-hand beautifully.”

Note: This story contains spoilers for the “Rap Sh!t” Season 2 finale.
The Season 2 finale of Max’s “Rap Sh!t” sees up-and-coming rap group Shawna (Aida Osman) and Mia (KaMillion) cementing their management with Francois Boom (Jaboukie Young-White) as they attempt to “fast track” their success in the hip-hop world, according to showrunner Syreeta Singleton, leaving their longtime alliance with Chastity (Jonica Booth) in the dust.
“He’s shinier and he comes with shinier people,” Singleton told TheWrap of Francois Boom, pointing to rapper and songwriter Pardison Fontaine, who is introduced to Shawna and Mia by Francois at the beginning of the final episode. “What it takes to make it a lot of times it’s like alright, ‘Where am I going to get the most eyes?'”

Rap group Shawna (Aida Osman) and Mia (KaMillion) are headed on tour in the sophomore installment of Issa Rae’s “Rap Sh!t,” but tensions mount as the duo struggles to get on the same page, with Rae noting “they don’t trust each other.”
“Trust is literally the biggest thing — trusting each other, but also trusting each other’s intentions for the group and for where they’re headed,” showrunner Syreeta Singleton told TheWrap. “Where you find them, even in Season 2, I don’t know that they’re completely aligned. They’re both still very much figuring out what they want for themselves and are both, at many moments, coming at it from a selfish place.”
After landing their first show together at the end of the Max comedy’s freshman season, Shawna immediately compromised their reputation — and Mia’s trust — with an unpredictable performance going back to her masked video days.

As befits its two rising rap artists who are constantly rethinking and remaking themselves in pursuit of success, “Rap Sh!t” Season 2 has a whole new look. The Max series created by Issa Rae and staring Aida Osman and KaMillion as Shawna and Mia spent its first season being as inventive as its characters, emphasizing the reels, FaceTimes, and social media chaos that they leverage to secure interest (if not paydays) from the music industry establishment. Season 2 doesn’t expand so much as explode the visual scope of the series, focusing on Shawna and Mia’s offline lives.
“We’re peeling back the layers, and we’re going deeper and we’re kind of living with these characters in real time a little more,” showrunner Syreeta Singleton told IndieWire. “So I feel like there was a lot of flexibility and freedom to kind of create a new look.”

Any artist will tell you that “making it” is a myth. Whether it’s music, dance, acting, writing, or anything else — there’s no point at which most people with a creative passion feel it entirely achieved and therefore no longer a priority. Ambition is a hungry beast with a growing appetite, and the standards for success change at every level — and differ between friends and collaborators, testing them every step of the way.
It’s a truth baked into Issa Rae’s “Rap Sh!t,” which premiered its second season on November 9. Shawna (Aida Osman) and Mia (KaMillion) are officially going on tour as a group, still miles from the kind of fame and acclaim they dream of, but clearly moving forward, even with a few steps back. “Rap Sh!t,” like “Atlanta” before it, doesn’t shy away from the girls’ increasing respect and access, but reminds viewers that the hardship isn’t over.

Aida Osman may be just beginning her acting career, but she's no stranger to the entertainment world. The Nebraska native stars in Issa Rae's "Rap Sh!t" as Shawna - one half of the show's central rap duo and a character she helped create specifically for herself. Before her TV debut, Osman started out as a writer on Netflix's "Big Mouth" and HBO's "Betty," also serving as a cohost on the "Keep It!" podcast. However, Osman's gig on her HBO Max show isn't her first time flexing her creativity.
After graduating from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2018, Osman built a following on Twitter a year later from a funny viral video of her rapping about . . . err, pegging. From there, her career took off as she booked her "Big Mouth" job almost immediately after, per Vanity Fair.

Shawna and Mia are finally getting their first taste of fame in "Rap Sh!t," though they're still fighting for a spot on their own tour. In this exclusive sneak peek at season two, the estranged high school-friends-turned-rap duo (played by KaMillion and Aida Osman) get good news from their manager, Francois (Jaboukie Young-White), regarding their first-ever tour - but there's a catch. Despite their viral success and thousands of presale tickets, the pair are informed they can't perform their biggest hit, "Seduce and Scheme," because of their tour mate, headliner Reina Reign.
"That is not on the set list," he tells them and their other manager, Chasity (Jonica Booth). He adds, "We really only got room for 'Tongue,'" referring to their remixed track with Reina.
Confused about the lack of stage time, Shawna asks, "What, they can't give us 10 minutes? We have two songs."

Fans are stirring with excitement as Rap Sh!T, Issa Rae’s television series on Max, gears up to return for its second season. On Nov. 9, viewers will continue to follow the fictional lives and musical journeys of Shawna Clark (Aida Osman) and Mia Knight (KaMillion). The show, based in Miami, is loosely inspired by the come-up story of South Florida’s very own hot group City Girls, who just dropped their latest project, Raw, in October and serve as co-executive producers for the series. On the last night of Rolling Loud Miami, a coalition of hip-hop's latest and greatest female rappers paid homage to the Queen. Not Queen Bey. Or Lil' Kim. But Trina. When the DJ dropped "Look Back at Me," a classic song from "Still Da Baddest," all of today's hip-hop queens were feeling it: Latto, TiaCorine, FloMilli, KaMillion, Kari Faux, Maiya the Don.

One week before the originally scheduled Aug. 10 return of “Rap Sh!t,” Max has delayed the comedy series’ second season to Nov. 9. Season 2 will debut with two episodes followed by weekly drops until the Dec. 21 finale.
The move comes as a result of the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. As the labor unions representing writers and actors continue to protest for a new deal with the major studios, actors are completely barred from promoting projects from struck companies, while writers carry out limited press opportunities. The new November premiere date of “Rap Sh!t” signals a hope on the studio’s part, in this case Warner Bros. Discovery, that labor conflicts will be resolved by then and that talent will be able help generate buzz.

Max is pushing back the second season of its comedy Rap Sh!t by three months in the latest strike-related scheduling move.
The series, which stars Aida Osman and KaMillion as estranged high school friends who form a rap duo, had been slated to premiere on Aug. 10. Max has moved the date back to Nov. 9.
The change serves two purposes for the Warner Bros. Discovery streamer: It will give Max new programming in the fall, which could become increasingly sparse if strikes by Hollywood writers and actors continue into the autumn. And should the unions and the media companies they’re striking against work out deals before then, the show’s stars and producers would be able to promote the new season.

‘Rap Sh!t’ Music Supervisors Spent Three Months Trying to Clear Drake’s ‘No Friends in the Industry’
Issa Rae’s ‘Rap Sh!t” focuses on female friendships, but also female rappers and the challenges facing women in a male-dominated industry. For music supervisors Sarah Bromberg and Philippe Pierre, that meant pulling together a soundtrack of artists that not only reflected Miami’s rap scene but also the strong ties between its main characters.
In the Max show, Shawna has been chasing fame as a solo rapper, and she reunites with her friend Mia (rapper Kamillion) to form a rap duo. Together they navigate success, friendship and the lively city of Miami.
Here, Bromberg and Pierre break down key needle drops in the series and how they spent months trying to clear a Drake song, as well as having to change an original song at the last minute due to clearance issues.
“No Friends in the Industry” – Drake
Bromberg: This was not in the script. They were nice enough to not script Drake.

A slow-motion panic attack in movie form, “The Young Wife” swirls around the hopes and doubts of a young woman (a radiant Kiersey Clemons) on the day of her “non-wedding.” It’s not a moment of matrimony, nor is it quite a commitment ceremony, but instead a day-long party, a celebration of the love between Celestina and her wishy-washy boyfriend River (Leon Bridges), who’s hours late. Set 10 years in the future and imbued with an ineffably otherworldly glow that almost makes you feel like you’ve been planted on another planet, “The Young Wife” is , and one with plenty of spiky characters and admirable visuals to pluck from.

Respectability has been a pillar of Black American culture since Emancipation. Since Black people arrived on the shores of America, we have been subjected to hardships and cruelties based solely on our skin color. For centuries we’ve combated horrible stereotypes in our everyday lives and American popular culture. For Black women, in particular, being anything other than docile and likable meant that you could be seen as masculine, mean, overly sexual, asexual, and conniving. These terms were weaponized against Black people by outsiders and insiders like W.E.B Dubois, who touted his talented tenth, the most educated of the race, as the epitome of “good” Blackness and the embattled Bill Cosby with his “perfect” portrayal of the Black family in “The Cosby Show.”
Though respectability has been lauded as a tool for full citizenship in the Black community, it’s a falsehood. More than that, the performance of likability is exhausting.

The process behind “Seduce & Scheme” was heavy on the scheming.
“We snuck in the writers room and the studio when they were having the sessions for the soundtrack. We wasn’t even supposed to be in there!” says KaMillion, who plays Mia in the Issa Rae-created comedy series “Rap Sh!t” on HBO Max. The series follows Mia and Shawna (Aida Osman), friends from high school who reunite years down the line and form a rap duo that quickly skyrockets to notoriety — at least on the internet. To create the original songs that Shawna and Mia perform, as well as the soundtrack that pays major homage to the show’s Miami setting, Rae’s music company Raedio held “camps” where different rappers and songwriters came together to collaborate.
This process was headed by Sarah Bromberg and Philippe Pierre, the Raedio vice presidents who served as music supervisors on “Rap Sh!
“Rap Sh!t” Episode 6 does not mess around — narratively speaking.
The latest installment of Issa Rae’s HBO Max comedy about emerging female rappers in Miami covers Mia (KaMillion) being targeted on social media while Shawna (Aida Osman) distracts herself from a devastating breakup by hanging out with Maurice (Daniel Augustin). When the women reconvene at episode’s end, they decide to take on Chastity a.k.a. the Duke of Miami (Jonica Booth) as their manager, focusing their emotional energy into creativity.
“An undercurrent in the entire episode is ‘Can I trust you to be there for me?’ and that’s coming off of the episode before where we saw that that trust had been broken,” director Amy Aniobi told IndieWire via Zoom ahead of the episode. “Even though we end on on the moment that’s tied to a guy, the episode is not about the men. It is...

You need to start watching “Rap Sh!t” yesterday.
Created by Issa Rae, HBO Max’s new comedy series follows the story and perspective of Shawna (Aida Osman), an aspiring Miami rapper working at a hotel for the time being. When she teams up unexpectedly with Mia (KaMillion), their impromptu freestyle becomes a viral track and the start of a promising collaboration.
“Rap Sh!t” is hyperspecific, laugh-out-loud funny, and deeply engrossing. Osman and the cast shine with Rae’s once-again winning team of writers and directors. It’s a breakout comedy series that isn’t to be missed.
Here are five (more) reasons to watch “Rap Sh!t” on HBO Max.
1. The Artist’s Struggle
In the very first episode, Shawna laments the state of the rising rap community online, a cacophony of influencers, social climbers, and the appearance-obsessed, all notably lacking in the talent she knows she has. “Rap Sh!t...

CAA has signed writer-director Sadé Clacken Joseph, who most recently directed two episodes of Issa Rae’s “Rap Sh!t,” for representation.
The HBO Max comedy series stars Aida Osman, KaMillion, Jonica Booth and Rj Cyler, with Syreeta Singleton as showrunner. Joseph helmed the pilot and second episode, titled “Something for the City” and “Something for the Girls” respectively. Both launched on July 21 to widespread critical acclaim.
“’Rap Sh!t’ may be grounded in reality, but there’s something lightly surreal about the experience of watching it,” Variety’s Caroline Framke wrote in her review of the series, examining how the comedy “bobs and weaves between its stories and the ones its characters are constantly posting on Instagram.”
Of the visual language of the show, Framke added: “The camera adopts the perspective of their phones as they scroll and Facetime; people watch each other’s stories with suspicion and envy; onscreen...
