Scholes the joker, Schmeichel scalding his privates, Beckham just one of the lads … Tom Horan on a film that casts a new light on 90s Manchester and its football heroes
How many documentaries can claim to capture the spirit of an era through the reflections of an ex-prime minister – and the story of a Danish goalkeeper scalding his penis on a giant tea urn? Not many. But it is unquestionably true of The Class of 92, the British film that premiered this week in London.
The Class of 92 is remarkable not just for being an excellent film about football, a subject that rarely translates to the big screen, but for being about so much more. Using interviews and archive footage, it follows six Manchester United players who met in their early teens and together won every honour in club football. But what emerges through the reminiscences of David Beckham,...

Football is intrinsically cinematic. The elation when the ball hits the back of the net, the despair when it doesn’t. The personalities, the transfer story-lines and the hold it has on so many people’s hearts. Documentary makers Benjamin and Gabe Turner play heavily on this notion, as their latest feature The Class of 92, dramatises and illuminates the sport – as we delve into the group of young boys who followed their childhood dreams and became Manchester United legends. You may be concerned that unless you’re a United fan you’ll feel alienated by this picture, but instead we explore a team camaraderie and get inside the politics of football, allowing enough in here for any fan of football to appreciate and enjoy. Yes Liverpool fans, even you.

Director: Ben Turner, Gabe Turner; Starring: David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Paul Scholes; Running time: 99 minutes; Certificate: 12A
It feels like yesterday that Alan Hansen famously wrote off Manchester United's young side at the beginning of the 1995/96 Premier League season, insisting that "you'll never win anything with kids". Yet, here we are over 18 years later, still talking about that very team, enough to warrant a much-anticipated documentary.
The Class of 92 centres around six members of that season's winning side, who rose from the ranks of United's youth team to become some of the most celebrated players in the history of the game. On paper, one may feel this would be aimed purely at Manchester United fans, but soon after the initial introductions, this clearly isn't the case.

The Class of 92 is a splendid film about six Manchester United friends living their (and our) dreams
Who knew? It is difficult to imagine a feature-length film charting the rise of six Manchester United footballers from Fa Youth Cup to Champions League winners being so laugh-out-loud funny. The Class of 92 is no comedy but it expertly and easily aces the six-guffaw test by which such movies stand or fall in the world of the Observer film critic, Mark Kermode.
Football, friendship and fame are the prevailing themes of a splendid documentary made by the film-making brothers Gabe and Ben Turner, but there is no shortage of funny either. Reunited for just one day last summer, David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Phil and Gary Neville, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes clearly revelled in recalling their seven-year ascent through the United ranks, from put-upon first year apprentices to treble-winning kings of Europe.

Shane Meadows has joked that the release of a new Stone Roses album in 2015 would be quick for the band.
The Stone Roses released their last album Second Coming in 1994, five and a half years after their self-titled debut.
After splitting in 1996, the band reunited in 2011 and at the time promised a "live resurrection" with new material, though have only played old songs at their live shows and festival appearances so far.
During Meadows's documentary The Stone Roses: Made of Stone, the director got visibly excited about the 'New Song' on the running order for a band rehearsal for their Warrington Parr Hall comeback.
However, the band played no new songs during that performance, and no new material is heard on the film itself.
Asked if he heard any new music during the making of the film, Meadows told Digital Spy: "No, we didn't. The day I think we were...

This week sees the release of Shane Meadows's The Stone Roses documentary Made of Stone.
The film has won rave reviews, but has also drawn criticism for refusing to dig too deep into the backstage fallings-out of the combustible foursome - both past and present.
So when Digital Spy met up with the director and his producer Mark Herbert, we did a little digging of our own about the making of the film. Here's what they had to say.
It's very clear what the film is and isn't - did you have that in mind when you were there at the reunion announcement?
Shane: "It was more when we met the band for the first time."
Mark: "We're so excited about them getting back together. We've both seen [BBC Stone Roses doc] Blood on the Turntable, those documentaries. This is about how excited are we, how can we get this excitement? I think...

Shane Meadows talks about his Stone Roses documentary Made of Stone – and what it was like to work with his heroes
To outsiders, love always seems like madness. In 2011, when the Stone Roses announced that they would be reforming to play some gigs – Ian Brown, John Squire, Gary "Mani" Mounfield and Alan "Reni" Wren together onstage, 15 years after their rancorous split – many, many music fans appeared to go completely insane. Grown men wept, danced, hugged, clambered into the loft to find their Reni hat, pointed both hands to the sky for the chorus of I Am the Resurrection, then wept again. The internet exploded with delight. Oasis's Liam Gallagher tweeted "not been this happy since my kids were born" and thousands agreed.
Of course, there were cynics; but they were silenced when all 150,000 tickets for the Roses' Manchester Heaton Park gigs last year were bought in 14 minutes. The band added another Heaton Park show.

Meadows was present at the group's high-profile press conference last week, where they announced their reunion. Industry sources have confirmed the commission, although the band have said a decision on the film is due in the next few weeks.

The Stone Roses have authorised a new biography that will chronicle their career. The band will tell the story of the creation of their 1989 self-titled debut album, the delayed follow-up and the details of their split for the first time in a book to be released next year, reports The Independent. The biography will be written by journalist Simon Spence, who is credited as the ghost writer of the memoirs of Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham. Spence has spent over 400 hours interviewing all four members of the band - Ian Brown, John Squire, Gary Mounfield and Alan Wren - for the book, which will be titled 'Fool's Gold'. Penguin will publish the biography, which is currently slated for an October 2012 (more)...

Rockers Primal Scream will not be joining U.K. street parties during the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton this year - they're convinced it is "wrong" to celebrate the royal nuptials while there are children "starving". The "Come Together" hitmakers have blasted plans to make the big day in April a glitzy extravaganza, branding the lavish and expensive ceremony "disgusting".
Bass player Gary Mounfield tells Q magazine, "Let's roll out the golden f**king coaches and all our f**king crowns, when there's people starving. Disgusting. England must f**king truly burn one day." And frontman Bobby Gillespie adds, "I hate the royal wedding, man. It's wrong, y'know?"
The British royal announced his engagement last month, confirming the nuptials will take place in the U.K. capital in spring or summer this year. The couple was rumored to be deciding between two venues for the ceremony - St Paul's Cathedral,...
