“The Crown” could well bow out in style on home soil, with the final outing of the show leading the list of nominees for the 2024 BAFTA TV and TV Craft awards, announced Wednesday.
Netflix’s hit royal drama — which came to an end last year after six seasons — landed eight nominations in total, including for Dominic West, Elizabeth Debecki, Lesley Manville and Salim Daw in the performance categories. Just behind “The Crown” and also a Netflix production, the apocalyptic “Black Mirror” episode “Demon 79” earned seven nominations, including limited drama and leading actress for Anjana Vasan.
Further down in a tight group of frontrunners, BBC dramas “Happy Valley” and “The Sixth Commandment and Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses” each have six nominations. Sarah Lancashire’s leading actress nomination for “Happy Valley” could see...

In spite of the success of The Great Escaper, Pathe UK is moving exclusively to television, and ceasing its film work.
Well, this is very sad news. Even as these words are being written, plaudits continue to be aimed at The Great Escaper, the much-liked film starring Michael Caine and Glenda Jackson. It’s the latest film to be released in the UK by Pathe UK, which has been putting films into British cinemas for over 20 years.
But it also looks as though The Great Escaper will be one of its last.
It’s been announced that Pathe UK is to refocus its business, away from cinema and instead towards scripted television. The company will be reducing its headcount down from 15 people working on the UK side to 12.
Pathe itself isn’t exiting the film business: instead, it’s going to be centring its film production work through its office in Paris.

Gentleman Jack creator Sally Wainwright is not giving up on a third season for the lesbian period drama series following its cancellation last week by HBO.
Wainwright told RadioTimes.com in an interview that HBO’s decision not to move forward with a third season was a surprise, noting however that BBC, the show’s co-producer, “certainly [is] up for” continuing with the show” but would need another streaming partner. The BBC has said that it was “in discussions” with Wainwright about “what’s next”.
“I think if HBO had been up for it, there’d have been no question, Wainwright added. “It’s been a very successful show in all areas for them – it’s had fantastic reviews, it’s had a very respectable audience and on top of that it’s had an impact on the community of gay women. We have the most extraordinary fanbase.”

HBO has canceled the historical period drama “Gentleman Jack” after two seasons, TheWrap has confirmed. The series — which drew from landholder and “the first modern lesbian” Anne Lister’s diaries — aired on the network’s lower-viewed Monday nights.
“HBO will not be moving forward with a third season of ‘Gentleman Jack,'” HBO said in a statement. “When we began this journey more than five years ago, we knew the series’ creator Sally Wainwright had a uniquely compelling vision, and it’s been tremendously gratifying to see how Anne Lister’s journey has resonated with viewers. We are incredibly grateful to Sally, to the impeccable Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle, and to the entire cast and crew for bringing Anne and Ann’s story to life. We’d also like to thank our partners at BBC and Lookout Point for their collaboration on two remarkable seasons.”

“Gentleman Jack” has been canceled at HBO after two seasons, Variety has confirmed.
Set in 19th century Yorkshire, the historical drama is based on the life of Anne Lister (Suranne Jones), a landowner and industrialist who is often referred to as the “first modern lesbian” due to her diaries, written in secret code, that documented her relationships with women. “Gentleman Jack” is a co-production with BBC One and also stars Sophie Rundle, Joe Armstrong, Amelia Bullmore, Rosie Cavaliero, Gemma Whelan, Gemma Jones, Timothy West and Tom Lewis.

Sally Wainwright’s “Gentleman Jack” is almost back for Season 2 on HBO.
The Suranne Jones-starring show about real-life historical figure Anne Lister — who lived in Yorkshire in the 1800s, and who was known not only for defying societal stereotypes about women and business, style of dress, and all manner of things, and who kept a coded diary of her romances with women — returns next month, HBO confirmed Thursday. The network also dropped a brand new teaser.
In the video clip, someone calls Anne “gentleman Jack” to her back, a nickname she got for her style of dress, prompting a shocked face from Jones.
It also hints at the drama ahead across its eight episode second season as Anne and her wife, the wealthy Ann Walker (they said vows together at home), as they try to carry out their relationship in private, but with society trying to invade their business.

Exclusive: Gentleman Jack producer Lookout Point’s investment in Shane Allen and Kate Daughton’s Boffola Pictures technically valued the new comedy indie at £4M ($5.4M), Deadline can reveal, while Lookout posted a £3.2M ($4.3M) loss for the Covid-impacted 2020/21 financial year.
Lookout’s full year accounts, which were released last month on Companies House, revealed the company invested £1M ($1.4M) to acquire 25% of Boffola Pictures’ share capital on May 4 2021, thereby technically valuing the company at £4M. The acquisition was made two months after the financial year covered in the accounts.
Little was known about the deal prior to the accounts being released, with Lookout only saying it had taken a minority stake when Boffola was officially launched over the summer.

Hit BBC drama “Happy Valley” will come to an end after its third season.
Sally Wainwright’s BAFTA-winning series — an early British drama success story that sold to broadcasters around the world and landed on Netflix in the U.S. and other key markets — will shoot season 3 in and around West Yorkshire in 2022, the BBC confirmed on Tuesday. While a third, six-episode round of the policing series has always been on the cards, Wainwright’s busy writing schedule has left a considerable gap since season 2 last aired on the BBC in 2016, and the creator was keen to get a next season of HBO-bbc drama “Gentleman Jack” out of the way before tackling season 3.
For its final season, production on “Happy Valley” is changing hands, with BBC Studios-backed Lookout Point taking over from Studiocanal’s Red, a longtime Wainwright collaborator until recent years. Lookout Point will co-produce with AMC Networks,...

Sally Wainwright’s BBC1 hit police thriller Happy Valley is to return for a third and final season after six years off air, with AMC boarding as co-producer for AMC+ and Gentleman Jack indie Lookout Point taking over production from Red Production Company.
Filming will begin early next year in West Yorkshire on the Bafta-winning six-part drama, which stars Sarah Lancashire as the iconic Sergeant Catherine Cawood alongside McMafia’s James Norton and Siobhan Finneran, with the show set to air later in 2022.
Lancashire will reprise her role as Cawood, who discovers the remains of a gangland murder victim in a drained reservoir that sparks off a terrible chain of events. Meanwhile, her grandson Ryan is still living with her but has ideas of his own about what kind of relationship he wants to have with the man Catherine refuses to acknowledge as his father.

When Victor Hugo wrote the 1900-page tome “Les Misérables” in 1862, he gave the world a transcending and sweeping tale that dissected the division of class while breathing life into complex characters spanning decades. Unfortunately, no matter what your stance on musical theater, much of that tome has since been lost in Broadway and big screen iterations.
Given that the book is one of the longest ever written, that comes as no surprise.
Enter the incoming six-part PBS Masterpiece limited series “Les Misérables,” a music-free offering aiming to introduce the novel’s intricate themes and plots to new and older audiences alike in a more intimate setting. Dominic West, David Oyelowo and Lily Collins star in the ambitious Belgium-shot production, which already aired across the pond on the BBC.
Retelling a classic that’s been told so many times certainly comes with its challenges, but Hugo’s story was one producers...
