Childish Gambino is going out with a flourish. During a Gilga Radio Instagram livestream on Sunday (April 14th), the musical alter ego of Donald Glover confirmed he will be releasing a “finished” version of his 2020 album, 3.15.20, under the title Atavista.
As a follow-up, Gambino will release Bando Stone & The New World, a brand new project doubling as the soundtrack for his upcoming film of the same name. “We’re releasing Atavista, but after that, there’s the final Childish Gambino album — a soundtrack for the fans,” he said.
While the rapper-singer didn’t reveal a release date for either album, he did say a music video for “Little Foot Big Foot” (originally titled “35.31”) directed by longtime collaborator Hiro Murai is coming in “the next couple weeks.”
Gambino also played a few previously unreleased tracks, including “Human Sacrifice” and the aforementioned “Little Foot Big Foot” featuring Atlanta rapper Young Nudy. Listen...

Hours after the release of Kid Cudi’s ninth solo album, Insano, a curious sight appeared on a barge in New York’s Hudson River. It was a massive statue of Cudi, its eyes flaming red and fluorescent light shooting out of its mouth. A similar barge floated off the coast of Long Beach, while a third Cudi statue stood in the middle of Paris’ Place de la Bourse. “Satanic Kid Cudi slammed for unveiling massive statues of himself,” read a hilarious Page Six headline compiling social-media reactions to the stunt.

“Ask God why, I didn’t get an answer/Why I lose my brother to bullets/Why I lose my grandma to cancer,” Offset harmonizes on “Say My Grace.” Few could have imagined that the Atlanta artist who emerged as one-third of Migos a decade ago with “Versace,” reintroducing the concept of a rap group to the Zoomer generation, would settle uncomfortably into the role of husband to pop icon Cardi B, and become a target of internet gossip so pernicious that the phrase “Offset cheating” elicits thousands of Google search results dating back years.

“Formula” can be a dirty word among music fans. For many, it evokes thoughts of unimaginative, knackered music by artists dropping off uninspired fan service just to say they did. Artists are pressured by sects of fans to expand their lyrical content, create versatile projects, and promise new innovations with every album. Sometimes, the right sonic pivot changes the scope of popular music. And other times, they get artists on lists of bad albums by brilliant artists.

Every so often a viral moment captures our imagination for its sheer absurdity. Over the holiday weekend, a Twitter user with the handle @topxkazi shared a video from what appeared to be a graduation party inside of a residential home. The video shows a packed room of young people dancing to the Young Nudy and 21 Savage track “EA,” from Nudy’s 2017 mixtape SlimeBall 2. A ceiling fan dangles ominously close to the crowd, almost like a horror movie foreshadowing the chaos that’s to come.

Lil Uzi Vert released his long-awaited sophomore album, Eternal Atake, last Friday. It quickly became the most popular album in the country, competing with the first-week numbers of artists like Bts and Justin Bieber. What’s more, it was the dynamic young rapper’s best work to date, a blisteringly charming and musically omnivorous assault; likely part of the reason for its commercial success. He immediately began suggesting — via Twitter, of course — that more was coming. And now, one week later, he’s released another album.

In January, Spotify’s Viral 50 chart, which logs the fastest-growing songs on the streaming platform, was overrun by imposters.
It started with “Blueberry Fweigo” by 73bands, which debuted at Number Eight on the U.S. Viral 50 a few days after Christmas. That song only lasted a day before it was taken down. It was almost immediately replaced on the chart by Mikey.Otx’s “Blueberry Faygo” — an identical recording decked out with a new title and attributed to a different artist.
