Deadline reports that Jaume Collet-Serra has signed on to direct Kate Warne for Amazon Studios and Seven Bucks Productions. Emily Blunt will produce through her Ledburry Productions banner and is also expected to star as Kate Warne, the American law enforcement officer known as the first female detective in the United States.
Emily Blunt won’t be able to finalize her deal to star in Kate Warne until the SAG-AFTRA strike concludes, but once it does, those conversations can resume. The project is described as an action thriller built around Warne, a “real-life Sherlock Holmes” figure who was the first female detective at the Pinkerton National Detective Agency and “paved the way for future woman in law enforcement and forever changed how detective work was done.“

“Black Adam” filmmaker Jaume Collet-Serra has been hired by Amazon MGM Studios to direct a movie starring Emily Blunt as pioneering female detective Kate Warne.
Melissa Stack wrote the screenplay from a previous draft by Gustin Nash. The untitled film, described as a “propulsive action thriller,” centers around a real-life Sherlock Holmes-esque character. Kate Warne was the first female detective at the Pinkerton agency and, according to a release, paved the way for future women in law enforcement and forever changed how detective work was done.
Blunt, who will also produce the movie, hasn’t finalized her deal because of the actors strike, but conversations are expected to resume once the guild has a new pact.
Dwayne Johnson, Hiram Garcia and Dany Garcia are producing via their company, Seven Bucks Productions. Kristina Sorensen is producing for With a K Productions. Kimberly Bialek will oversee for Seven Bucks Productions.

Exclusive: Gustin Nash, the screenwriter of Amazon Studios’ in-the-works movie Kate Warne, which has Emily Blunt attached to star in the story of the first female Pinkerton Detective, has signed with WME. The agency deal for the scribe comes after Deadline scooped earlier this month that Amazon acquired Nash’s pitch at the end of a six-studio bidding war.
Blunt is also set to produce Kate Warne alongside Dwayne Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions and Kristina Sorensen. Nash is executive producer on the project, an action adventure take on Warne, whose sleuthing skills in a male-dominated field paved the way for women in law enforcement and forever changed how detective work was done.
Nash’s writing credits include 2007’s Charlie Bartlett for MGM which starred Anton Yelchin, Robert Downey Jr and Kat Dennings, and 2009’s Youth In Revolt directed by Miguel Arteta and starring Michael Cera, Zach Galifianakis, Steve Buscemi and Rooney Mara.

Exclusive: Following a highly competitive auction, Amazon Studios has acquired a star vehicle that will have Emily Blunt playing Kate Warne, the first woman to become a detective at the Pinkerton Agency. Scripting is Gustin Nash, whose credits include Youth in Revolt and Charlie Bartlett. This amounts to a reteam for Blunt with her Jungle Cruise co-star Dwayne Johnson; he’s producing the film with his Seven Bucks Productions cohorts Hiram Garcia and Dany Garcia, in coproduction with Blunt’s Ledbury Productions and Kristina Sorensen Productions. Blunt and Sorensen are producing and Nash is exec producer.
The movie is a propulsive action adventure built around Warne, a real life female Sherlock Holmes in a male dominated industry whose singular sleuthing skills paved the way for future women in law enforcement and forever changed how detective work was done.
Jungle Cruise is still on its theatrical and streaming voyage for Disney.

Gus Van Sant has landed Charlie Bartlett and Youth in Revolt scribe Gustin Nash for a rewrite job on the much anticipated Fox Searchlight title, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. The original screenplay was penned by Milk writer Dustin Lance Black. Once the final pages are complete - we should expect a fruitful casting process - with stoner-faced James Franco as an ideal candidate for Van Sant to re-team with. Gist: Based on the Tom Wolfe novel and written by Lance Black, this is the story of a cross-country road trip that "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" author Ken Kesey orchestrated with a group called the Merry Pranksters. Driving in a psychedelically painted bus from California to visit the World's Fair in New York in 1964, Kesey and his band used the trip as a way to turn on those they met to the mind-expanding wonders of LSD. Chicago – Some actors are so brilliantly in command of their abilities that their efforts are routinely taken for granted. Michael Cera’s utter failure to hit a single false note onscreen has led some to believe that he’s simply playing himself, as if playing oneself was somehow easy to begin with.
Cera’s comic persona is as impenetrable as Woody Allen’s. He embodies vulnerable neurotic teenage angst with an authenticity unmatched by any actor in recent years. His best lines are delivered under the breath and at odd angles, striking the funny bone with impeccable deadpan timing. After Hollywood tried (and failed) to turn him into a commercial commodity, with “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist” and the embarrassing “Year One,” it’s a relief to see Cera in a role that proves he has a range beyond the persona he has mastered.

When In Rome: "Kristen Bell plays Beth, a rich young gorgeous art curator with a giant apartment in New York City and a job at the Guggenheim. Her dad dates beach volleyball players. Her love interest is Nick (Josh Duhamel) who is a rich young gorgeous sports writer from New York who isn't in pro football only because he got struck by lightning during a game. So these are like totally blue collar people. Why don't you just make the characters a princess and a fucking Kennedy in the first place? The PR release blurb tells us: "Beth is a young, ambitious New Yorker who is completely unlucky in love." Yeah, I'm not saying that rich, young and gorgeous people don't have problems too, it's just that I don't care on account of being dead and cynical inside." - Steven Lloyd Wilson

Another Tuesday coming up means another week of collecting and watching awesome movies that have hit shelves at your local video store. Here’s what’s good, okay and horrible:
Grab ‘Em Right Away:
Vengeance Trilogy Bluray
Directed by: Park Chan-Wook
Written by: Park Chan-Wook
Starring: Min-sik Choi, Yeong-ae Lee & Kang-ho Song
Why should you buy this? Because it’s without a doubt the greatest revenge trilogy ever made. Made up of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, each film does its best to surpass its previous installment and succeeds. Even though none of the films have recurring characters, the universal theme keeps everything on the same playing field rather brilliantly. Chan-wook has one of the most demented and twisted minds in cinema. His films have such a unique style visually and narratively, upped by brilliant and satisfying endings you can’t help but love.

Youth in Revolt Directed by: Miguel Arteta Written by: Gustin Nash (screenplay), C.D. Payne (novel) Starring: Michael Cera, Portia Doubleday, Zach Galifianakis, Steve Buscemi, Fred Willard, Ray Liotta, Jean Smart, Mary Kay Place, Justin Long Ever since his debut as George-Michael on Arrested Development, Michael Cera has been pigeonholed as the shy, soft-spoken nerd, the awkward outcast who has trouble talking to girls. Whether or not you find him cute and endearing, you have to admit that he suits the role quite well, and has managed to turn in some pretty hilarious performances over the past few years. Still, for some reason people are suddenly insisting that he needs to do something different in order to prove his worth (nevermind the fact that most comedic actors simply play the same role over and over again). Perhaps in response to these people, we now have Youth in Revolt, the next phase in Michael Cera's evolution!

There's nothing inherently wrong with adapting a book into a movie. Some of the best and most affecting American films have been based on novels -- The Godfather, Psycho, To Kill a Mockingbird, and I'm just randomly culling from AFI's 1998 list -- and it makes sense, in a way. Rather than take a chance on creating a new story, a writer or director or team of producers can start with one they know has had an impact on at least a few people. It's a totally respectable corner to cut, as it were. But the big problem that can come with an adaptations is when the finished film feels like an adaptation, that is, feels like a slipshod assembly of characters and scenes that should probably mean more and that carry an air of importance that's impossible to justify. Right behind that one is when the film deviates from the...

At times, watching Youth in Revolt is nearly as awkward as adolescence itself. There's such promise in the source material (C.D. Payne's hilarious novel), the filmmaker (The Good Girl's Miguel Arteta) and the cast (Michael Cera, Zach Galifianakis, Steve Buscemi and Fred Willard, to name a few), so it's disappointing when it doesn't live up to its potential. Plus, like some other adolescent, umm, experiences, Youth in Revolt peaks too early, leaving the audience bored and unsatisfied once it passes its halfway mark.
However, its first 45 minutes represent some of the best teen comedy in years. There's a verve and anarchic spirit rarely present in PG-13 films that are aimed at the pre-college set, giving Youth in Revolt more of an edge than its peers. It deserves its MPAA-given R-rating, and not just for its language (filthy) and sense of humor (raunchy), but for the fact that it...

This week finally sees the release of Youth in Revolt, the film version of C.D. Payne's 1993 novel. Considering the book's length (about 500 pages), director Miguel Arteta and screenwriter Gustin Nash faced the unenviable task of deciding what should remain and what should be excised. How do you make a 90-minute film that pleases the novel's legion of fans while remaining accessible to a larger audience that has never read it?
It's a challenge familiar to sci-fi fans. We've probably all experienced that moment of utter disbelief that a favorite story or novel has been twisted and mangled beyond recognition. But when the filmmakers get it right, honoring the spirit and creating a work that lives apart from its inspiration, it's magical. Regrettably, I don't read as many novels nowadays as in my earlier years, so I've never read the source material for some of my favorite science fiction films (e.

Youth in Revolt is a movie full of Michael Ceras. Cera stars in the film playing a dual role both as virgin nerd Nick Twisp and Nick’s newly created, bad boy alternate personality Francois Dillinger. But the Cera doesn’t stop there. The film’s other characters seem to have caught the Cera bug, speaking in the same mildly disconnected monotone that has become Cera’s trademark, or using Cera’s all too familiar blank stare to gaze into the camera. Everyone in the movie has become Michael Cera, it’s as if they’ve all been instructed to filter their characters through some sort of strange Michael Cera impression. That might be annoying of not for Michael Cera who, is doing something distinctly un-Cera with Twisp’s imaginary friend Francois. Bug-eyed and angry, it’s Francois Dillinger, as the only non-Cera character in the film, who makes watching Youth in Revolt worthwhile…...

See what the critics are saying about Michael Cera's latest coming-of-age comedy.

Michael Cera in "Youth in Revolt"
Photo: Weinstein Co.
The dilemma is clear, the solution utterly nutty. In "Youth in Revolt," Michael Cera's Nick Twisp plays a young romantic whose dweeby sensitivity is not going to win him the virginity-stealing affections of sultry tease Sheeni Saunders (Portia Doubleday). Twisp's plan? Invent Mr. François Dillinger, an alter ego whose fire-starting, car-stealing ways might help Nick bed the gal of his dreams.
As far as savvy girl-getting strategies go, Twisp's might not be the wisest, as it soon becomes a little hard to differentiate between his true self and his law-breaking one. It certainly makes for a ton of laughs, though. What are the critics saying? With the film opening on Friday (January 8), the reviews are in. Let's take a look.

Youth in Revolt, which is based on a novel by C.D. Payne, is a teenage rebellion film that comes across like Fight Club for young hipsters. Even though the film sometimes tries a bit too hard to be edgy, Youth in Revolt is a funny, dirty, and stylish comedy.
Michael Cera plays Nick Twist is a precocious 16 year old nerd with raging hormones and none of the moves necessary to get next to a lady. When he isn't thinking about sex or masturbating, Nick channels his remaining energy into writing, reading, listening to Frank Sinatra, and watching arthouse films. Nick's parents (Steve Buscemi and Jean Smart) are divorced, and he stays with his mother so she can continue to get child support checks. While on vacation with his mom and her boyfriend (Zach Galifanakis), Nick encounters the pretentious girl of his dreams: Shennie Sanders (Portia Doubleday). Shennie is obsessed with French culture.

Typically when a film gets bumped to the dreaded first two months of any year you are either looking at an Oscar contender from the previous year expanding to additional markets or a dog of a film the studio has decided to release against a bunch of other dogs. Such informal rules are what makes Miguel Arteta's Youth in Revolt an early year breath of fresh air. I had a lot of fun throughout this entire film and when faced with the January and February doldrums this one serves as a solid option that defies the early year rule set.

Six years later, we are still feeling the heat and feeding the fire that we started with Jared Hess’ Napoleon Dynamite. While the popularity of its one-liners died out shortly after its release, the impact of Hess’ film can be felt in chintzy gifts at Urban Outfitters stores as almost a sense of déjà vu. It’s as if the aesthetic appeal of Napoleon’s non-adventure have been destroyed, vaporized and absorbed by our collective culture and subconsciously regurgitated back onto shelves.

I like Michael Cera as an actor. Ever since he burst onto the scene in “Arrested Development”, his understated brand of comedy has been right up my alley. He is the polar opposite of a Jim Carrey or a Will Ferrell, who try to overwhelm you at times with trying to be funny. Cera has made a living so far playing nerdy guys searching for their place in life. Cera has taken this route again in “Youth in Revolt”. He plays virgin Nick Twisp whose main mission in life seems to be losing his virginity. Nick is having a tough time in this pursuit in his hometown. He’s not helped at all in his quest by any comforting words from his mother (Jean Smart). She’s too busy with her drunken louse of a boyfriend (Zach Galifianakis). His father (Steve Buscemi) isn’t much of a help either. He...

Equal parts a derivation from J.D. Salinger, Daniel Clowes, François Truffaut and Wes Anderson, Nick is obsessed with girls and enjoys great literature, foreign cinema and Frank Sinatra – which means, of course, that he is still a virgin. Nick’s parents are divorced. He lives with his mother (Jean Smart) and her white trash boyfriend, Jerry (Zach Galifianakis doing what he does best). Jerry rips off some sailors – thus Jerry, Nick’s mother and Nick thrust forward into the narrative as they go on vacation (into hiding) at a Christian trailer park. This is where Nick falls instantly head-over-heels for...

Michael Cera can do no wrong. It's been said that he plays the same character in every movie. It's been said that that character is just him, that he's playing a slightly more or less heightened version of himself every time he's projected on the big screen. Well, to be honest, I don't care. He does it well. He makes me laugh. And he's the Og of hopeless, awkward, geeky romantics. And that sentiment doesn't change throughout Youth in Revolt. Though, it does evolve. Based on the novel by C.D. Payne and adapted by Gustin Nash, writer of Charlie Bartlett, Youth in Revolt follows the story of puppy love turned intense infatuation and the lengths to which Nick Twisp (Cera) will go to seal the deal. How far does he go? Far enough to create an alternate identity; one that stands in complete opposition to his play-it-safe attitude. A risk-taker.

Ralph Meeker, Dan Duryea, Vince Edwards, Steve Cochran. There's just something about the asshole.
Scratch that. That's too strong and vulgar and dismissive of a word. More like... the shit bird, the hinky hombre, the gashouse palooka, whichever old-timey slang you choose to apply. These fellas are smarmy, slimy, ready with the pimp hand, and they sport that proverbial cat-that-ate-the-canary grin whenever a comely broad crosses their path. If you're upset, you're just, as Duryea spits in "The Little Foxes," "showing off your grief" (though he dares utters this to a man, which, in the rare case of the actor's screen career, causes Mr. Duryea to become the recipient of the bitch slap, rather than his usual backhand). And should you ever flag down a car in hysterical distress; the good looking stinker might not give you the comfort you require. He might just ask, à la Ralph Meeker as Mike Hammer,...

When I was a young lad my best friend, frustrated in love, would complain to me: "Hey, Harvey, how come the great-looking girls looked right past nice guys like me and always go for the bad guys-the black leather-jacket crowd with duck's-ass hair styles that work in gas stations and auto repair shops and act like they don't give much of a damn about them?" I answered with what was a cliché, even in my own youth: "Don't worry. They look to guys like us to marry because they know we're nice and would make great fathers. Sooner or later, they'll come around."

The second poster for “Youth in Revolt” directed by Miguel Arteta from the script by Gustin Nash, Miguel Arteta and Michael Cera has been unveiled.
The coming-of-age comedy, based on the acclaimed novel by C.D. Payne, “Youth in Revolt,” is the story of Nick Twisp, a unique, but affable teen with a taste for the finer things in life like Sinatra and Fellini, who falls hopelessly in love with the beautiful, free-spirited Sheeni Saunders (Portia Doubleday) while on a family vacation.
But family, geography and jealous ex-lovers conspire to keep these two apart. With Sheeni’s encouragement, Nick abandons his dull, predictable life and develops a rebellious alter ego: Francois. With his ascot, his moustache and his cigarette, Francois will stop at nothing to be with Sheeni, and leads Nick Twisp on a path of destruction with unpredictable and uproarious consequences.

Oh my god, it’s Nice Guy(Tm): The Movie! Everyone knows girls only like jerks, so wimpy, doormatish, insecure Nice Guy transforms himself into a deranged, criminal asshole in order to get the girl... and it works! Ah fuck. Really, guys? (Because of course this movie is exclusively the creation of guys: director Miguel Arteta, screenwriter Gustin Nash, based on books by C.D. Payne.) Aren’t you tired of hearing yourselves bitch about how girls don’t like you because you’re too nice and polite and kind? When will you realize that you’re the problem, that girls just don’t like with no personality, no thoughts of their own, and no backbone? (See HeartlessBitches.com for a more complete feminist rant against the “nice guy.”)...

As studios are wont to do when they blow the trailer load too early in the game, Dimension Films has seen fit to follow up its first two trailers with a Red Band version, so that we might all revel in a little profanity. It's funny because your mother might tsk tsk.
That said: I want to like this movie. I love coming-of-age films more than anything in the whole world that doesn't start with a P end with an O and play risc in between. By all accounts, C.D. Payne's Nick Twisp novels are great source material, too. Director Miguel Arteta is unknown, but promising, and screenwriter Gustin Nash (dude, buy a "D") wrote the wonderful but overlooked Charlie Bartlett.
So what's the problem? You people are the fucking problem. The Pajiba fucking readership, who have planted this "Michael Cera blows green chicken peen" seed into my head.

Youth is Revolt is the screen adaptation of C.D. Payne’s cult book series charting the progress of the awkward, sex obsessed, super smart teen that is Nick Twisp. Michael Cera is made to inhabit this deadpan absurdist comedy world, a place where the teens are way more intelligent than the adults. It’s not an original take on life, but it’s probably how most teens think, so “whatever.” The strong supporting cast includes Steve Buscemi as Dad, and Zach Galifianakis as Jerry, one of his Mum’s pig boyfriends. Gustin Nash’s script feels slightly jerky, but suspending disbelief when you are laughing is usually easy.
Nick Twisp believes everyone is getting more sex than him, and he’s probably right. His separated parents certainly are. Buscemi is banging half-his-age-hottie Ari Graynor,...

Youth In Revolt Directed by Miguel Arteta Mean-spirited screwball comedy Youth in Revolt , based on C.D. Payne's 1993 novel, follows Nick Twisp (Michael Cera), a cynical, sex-obsessed 16-year-old who, while on vacation in a trailer park, meets and falls in love with beautiful, intellectual teen rebel Sheeni Saunders (Portia Doubleday). The only things standing in the way of the consummation of Nick's first love is Sheeni's poetry-writing ex-boyfriend Trent (Jonathan B. Wright) and her religious zealot parents (M. Emmett Walsh and Mary Kay Place) . It barely needs to be said that Michael Cera has perfected his socially awkward, asexual, nerdy adolescent shtick. For some, it might be tiring to see the same actor in the same role once again trying to lose the same virginity, and Youth in Revolt is more of the same. As Nick, Cera doesn't do much to elevate the material to anything other than a typical coming-of-age story,...

"The Hangover" breakout Zach Galifianakis is negotiating to join the Paramount comedy "Dinner for Schmucks."
"Schmucks" has Jay Roach directing Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and Lucy Punch in a comedy about the most pathetic guy ever to be invited to another man's weekly dinner party. Galifianakis is playing an assistant manager of a mattress store who is dating Carell's ex-wife.
The film is scheduled to begin filming in the fall for a July 2010 release and is being co-financed by DreamWorks, Spyglass and Paramount.

Galifianakis recently signed on to star with Robert Downey Jr. in the Warner Bros. comedy "Due Date," to be directed by "The Hangover's" Todd Phillips starting in October.
Beyond that, the comedian has a "Hangover" sequel on tap and a handful of other comedies in development.
