‘Choose or Die’ Review: A Video Game Kills Without Rhyme or Reason in This Disposable Netflix Horror
Even the smallest feature-length film is a considerable logistical enterprise, so it’s a bit flummoxing how little thought appears to have been put into “Choose or Die.” While there have been worse-crafted, even more routinely formulaic Netflix horror efforts, this one takes the cake for sheer whateverness of barely-there plot, concept, character detailing and so on. If some movies now seem designed to be consumed on phones, this one demands so little attention, for such scant rewards, you could probably watch it while vacuuming or doing yoga without missing anything important.
Not that first-time feature director Toby Meakins or his cast do slipshod work. But their labors are expended on a “viral” curse premise so indifferently defined and developed, the result recalls the archaic term “quota quickie,” which referred to low-budget 1930s British films made by Parliamentary decree just to keep the industry chugging. “Choose or Die” may substitute supernatural deaths for music-hall songs,...

British dance music pioneers The Prodigy are getting the documentary treatment.
Pulse Films — the studio behind Gangs of London, Riz Ahmed’s recent film Mogul Mowgli and Spike Jonze’s Beastie Boys Story — is producing the project, which will mark the first feature-length music documentary about the band.
Directed by multi-Grammy nominated Paul Dugdale and written alongside Sam Bridger, the feature — provisionally entitled The Prodigy and being produced by founding members Liam Howlett and Maxim — will tell what the filmmakers are describing as “the raw, uncompromising and emotional story of a gang of young outlaws from Essex who came together ...

Keith Flint, frontman of British techno-punk group the Prodigy, was pronounced dead on Monday morning of apparent suicide. Having previously served as the group’s onstage dancer since 1990, Flint debuted his own sneering nihilist style in their 1996 hit “Firestarter,” a high-octane breakbeat masterpiece which would catapult the band to international fame. Its accompanying album, 1997’s The Fat of the Land, hit Number One that summer and was certified double platinum that same year.
Just days before dropping the album, the Prodigy teased their global star power with an explosive headlining set at the U.

Keith Flint, the double-mohawked lead singer and founding member of the controversial British rave band The Prodigy, was found dead in Essex, England, today, his death apparently by suicide. He was 49.
“The news is true,” wrote Prodigy co-founder Liam Howlett on The Prodigy’s Instagram page today. “I can’t believe I’m saying this but our brother Keith took his own life over the weekend. I’m shell shocked, f*ckin angry, confused and heart broken ….. r.i.p brother.”

The Prodigy have unveiled their new video for “Need Some1,” which previews their forthcoming LP, No Tourists. The band’s seventh album arrives on November 2nd via BMG.
Directed by Paco Raterta, the visual for “Need Some1” encapsulates the group’s trademark abrasive, yet danceable vibes in all its raw, urgent glory. Shot in Manila, Philippines, the woozy scenes follow a band as they traverse violent streets and bleak corridors while drinking and fighting their way through the world’s depravity before delivering a thrashing, cathartic performance.

Following a six year hiatus, The Prodigy were revitalized in 2015 with the release of The Day Is My Enemy, a fourteen track outing that serves as the group’s latest full length effort to date. The record was a success, scoring them their sixth number one album while gaining acclaim from fans and critics alike. Despite the fact that the group has hinted in the past at their impending retirement, they’ve just revealed that new material is on the way.
Taking to Twitter, The Prodigy have announced over the weekend that they’ll release new music in 2017. Of course, 2017 is a rather vague timeline and it’s unclear at this point how far into the year we’ll have to wait before the promised material gets released, but we’ll be keeping our fingers crossed that it arrives sooner than later.

After innovating the rave scene in the early 90’s, The Prodigy ventured into the unknown with the groundbreaking Fat Of The Land in ’97. The release marked a new beginning for the group with its very aggressive stance and heavy sonic bombs permeating the landmark album, helping to create an aggressive and violent streak not heard before in the genre.
One of the most understated facets of the band is their incorporation of rock music styles combined with the more obvious electronic direction that the band are most known for, giving them a harder edge that to this day still hasn’t been matched. Acts like Pendulum, Pitchshifter, Chase & Status etc, have all attempted to evolve the genre in the same fiery way but they lack the authentic innovation and seamless melding that made the Essex lot so unique.

Matthew Weiner has always been more comfortable talking about the past of “Mad Men” rather than letting anyone know anything about the future — even when that future is only seven episodes long, starting Sunday, April 5 at 10 p.m. Having spent enough time over the years asking Weiner questions that he responded to with a very guarded, “Well, you’ve got to watch,” I knew enough to focus as much on the past as possible when we recently sat down for an hour-long interview to discuss the end of his Emmy-winning baby. We talked about the last days of production, looked back all the way to the show’s origins when Weiner was a staff writer on “Becker” looking for a different kind of career in television, the show’s long acting Emmy drought, and more. And I made it almost to the end without a single “You’ve got to watch.

Iain Softley is a filmmaker who’s hard to categorise. His career is pretty fascinating, because it’s almost impossible to predict what kind of film he’ll make next. His first film was a drama about the early career of the Beatles, which he followed with an unconventional action movie about computer hackers. Then he made a period drama. Then a weird sci-fi movie set in a mental hospital. Then a spooky horror film, and followed it up with a fantasy movie for kids. How many directors can you name who’ve made a series of films that diverse?

From the Beatles to Blur, more than 50 years of popular music are celebrated at London 2012 opening ceremony
More than 50 years of British pop music were honoured by Danny Boyle as part of his 2012 Olympics opening ceremony in east London. Featuring a megamix of artists from 1960 to the present day, an array of dancers performed to music from David Bowie to the Prodigy, via Blur, Amy Winehouse and the Specials.
There were many highlights during the often moving 15-minute section. Dizzee Rascal appeared onstage to perform a section of his hit Bonkers, while dancers in Day-Glo costumes appeared to hold their own rave-up to the music of Eurythmics, Happy Mondays and New Order. Underworld's Born Slippy also featured in the medley, a song that Boyle had previously used in the soundtrack to his film Trainspotting. And the ironic sight of the Queen having to listen to the Sex Pistols – whose...

The Chemical Brothers - Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons - were placed third. Flint said: "To walk off a stage and feel like we smashed it - that's the reward for us, to see the crowd react and know we've done what we've come to do. "But something like this is truly voted for by the people - and essentially we are nothing without them, so it feels awesome, and really respectful." Howlett added: "I'd like to think it's because we kept it real man, because we always do our own thing and try our hardest. "Mixmag (more)...

As X-Men: First Class gets its home release, James takes a look back over the work of its director, Matthew Vaughn…
With the DVD and Blu-ray of X-Men: First Class hitting shelves this week, we'd like you to join us in looking back over the career of the film's acclaimed British director, Matthew Vaughn, to try and see what makes his movies work so well. And, indeed, why we can almost forgive him for helping Vinnie Jones' acting career along.
Originally a producer, Vaughn mostly worked with Guy 'The Geezer' Ritchie, helping to create a wave of Hollywood-rivalling British action films that even people living under rocks have heard of. We're talking about the likes of Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels, Mean Machine and Snatch (although the less said about his involvement in the terminally awful Madonna vehicle, Swept Away, the better).

Dallas – In the past year electronic dance music has wiggled its way back into the mainstream in a way it hasn’t done since the mid-90’s enthusiasm for hard-banging house acts like the Prodigy and the Chemical Brothers, who have both weathered changing musical trends and are still around today. What better time than now for the inaugural run of a new touring digital music festival?
Case-in-point, the Identity Festival. “Grandfathered” by Edm legends Kaskade and Steve Aoki, who helped pick out the jaw-dropping lineup, Identity has been sweeping the U.S. with rotating slots featuring the likes of White Shadow, Holy Ghost, Datsik, the Disco Biscuits, Rusko, DJ Shadow, Skrillex, Pretty Lights and, of course, Kaskade and Aoki themselves at select spots.
Things were off to a slow start at the Dallas stop on Sunday, considering the temperature was a mild 107 degrees.

He played some of the most sublime chess ever seen. Then, as a new book and film illustrate, he disappeared from view. What made such a brilliant mind go into freefall?
In 1999, I spent three days sitting in a variety of thermal baths dotted around Budapest. As grand and attractive as the Hungarian capital's spas are, I wasn't stewing myself for therapeutic or leisure purposes. Instead, I was waiting for someone I'd been told frequented the baths, someone who was said to be a genius and a paranoid obsessive, the greatest chess player who ever lived and an obnoxious crackpot. I was looking for Bobby Fischer.
For the last four decades of his life, that's what people did with Fischer – they looked for him. Fans, journalists, biographers, friends, they all tried to find this mythical creature, either in person or in that fabulous abstract realm that he continued to haunt: chess.

The Prodigy are to release a live CD and DVD/Blu Ray of their Warrior's Dance Festival show. The concert, which was filmed last July, took place at Milton Keynes Bowl. "A lot of thought went into the place where we could throw the best party," bandmembers Liam Howlett, Keith Flint and Maxim explained in a statement. "We never wanted the typical stadium venue, so Milton Keynes Bowl was perfect for our first ever UK Warrior's Dance Festival 'coz it felt like a mad party in a field. "The night was massive for us. It was important to us to bring a proper festival day and night for the people to remember and bring the same intense atmosphere like when we play Brixton Academy... and it was. "We never intended to do a live DVD, but when we saw the footage we knew it had to be done... and born...

UK techno legends The Prodigy have lent their psycho sound to many feature films (including Spawn, Event Horizon and House of Wax), but they haven't been in front of the camera for their own big-screen epic until now. The massive concert documentary World's On Fire marks the first cinematic presentation of synth-master Liam Howlett and his crazed crew during one of their most historic gigs, and now it's coming out next month on DVD & Blu-ray. Hit the jump to find out more. The Prodigy performance featured in World's On Fire was filmed at the massive "Warrior's Dance" festival at the UK's Milton Keynes Bowl last July 24th, and and made its way to the big screen for a one-night-only showing...

The Prodigy have revealed that they are "f***ed off" by comparisons people make between them and Pendulum. The techno group, who are gearing up for an arena gig in Milton Keynes alongside Pendulum at the end of the month, insist they are nothing like the dance group. Frontman Liam Howlett told NME: "People go on about Pendulum being similar to us but they really aren't. I think when you see us alongside each other it's f***ing obvious that we're totally different. "And we're as f***ed off with people going on about that as they (more)...

Stevie Wonder
Anyone who can't face braving Glastonbury to see the Motown legend's Sunday-night set can head to London's Hyde Park for this headlining show. It's likely to be heavy on the hits, but a little too heavy on the audience participation, if complaints from disgruntled punters at Wonder's recent shows are anything to go by. And be warned: Jamiroquai seems to have been enticed out of retirement to provide support. Hyde Park, London W2, 26 June. Box office: 020-7009 3484.

This beloved Scottish festival is prized as much for its atmosphere as its lineup. And they're certainly wheeling out the big hitters this year: Eminem, Muse, Kasabian, Jay-z, Black Eyed Peas, Florence and the Machine, La Roux, Dizzee Rascal and Paolo Nutini,...

Rihanna wants to collaborate with La Roux.
The 'Umbrella' hitmaker - who was assaulted by then-boyfriend Chris Brown last February - was keen to record a track with the duo's singer Elly Jackson, but the British star admits she is still waiting to be approached.
Elly said: "I've had three or four offers for collaborations in America. Big, big artists. Rihanna was very interested for a time. "That was weird. My A and R man said, 'Rihanna's going to call' but that was the last I heard of it. She didn't call! It was around the time of er, troubles in her life."
Despite never receiving the offer, Elly - who is joined in La Roux by producer Ben Langmaid - admits she would never have accepted it anyway. She added: "To be honest, do I really want to work with Rihanna? Not really. I'm more interested in what the phone call would be like.

While a few of The Flickcast team got to see Matthew Vaughn’s adaptation of the popular comic Kick-Ass at SXSW, the rest of us are still pretty excited for its Us release next Friday. We’ve been bringing you some great stuff from the film, including clips and the official music video, so why not bring you even more?
We’ve got two brand new clips that are hot from the studio, waiting for you to check out. In one, Kick-Ass (Aaron Johnson) enters into his very first fight and, well, gets his ass kicked. You can pick up on Vaughn’s British directing influence here, as Prodigy’s “Omen” plays in the background.
In the second clip, Dave Lizewski decides to don the costume of his heroic alter ego in order to surprise and impress the girl of his dreams, played by Hot Tub Time Machine’s Lyndsy Fonseca.

Liam Gallagher's son is "obsessed" with his uncle's group The Prodigy. Gene Gallagher - the Oasis star's eight-year-old son with wife Nicole Appleton - infuriates his parents by demanding to listen to his favourite songs by the veteran dance act, of which his uncle Liam Howlett is a member. Howlett - who is married to Nicole's sister, Natalie Appleton - told Q magazine: "Gene does Nicole's head in, in the car on the way to school. He's always like, 'Put it on again. Put 'Thunder' on.' " Gallagher - whose brother is his former Oasis bandmate Noel Gallagher - is supportive of Gene's interest in music. It has previously been claimed the 'Lyla' singer - who also has a...

The Prodigy have joked that they intend to have a major bust-up before starting work on their next studio album. The 'Firestarter' hitmakers claimed that they are eager to match the success of their recent record Invaders Must Die, which was written during some "really hard times" for the band. "The next album will probably be recorded while we are still on tour, but first we need to have a bust-up," Liam Howlett told the Daily Star. "We are jiving and putting little one-liners towards each other at the minute," Keith Flint added. "Then on Thursday I'll leave Liam a really nasty voicemail in the early hours just to start the paranoia going. "We'll (more)...

Liam Howlett and Keith Flint have criticised the Mercury Prize for ignoring the opinions of music fans. The band were nominated for the award in 1994 for their second album Music For The Jilted Generation, but this year's Invaders Must Die was not shortlisted by the panel. Speaking about the annual prize at the Kerrang! Awards, Howlett told BBC 6 Music: "It's got nothing to do with the public. It's to do with a panel of people that always opt for the most obscure thing. I think we should have been nominated this year." (more)...

Welcome to the weekly Newsroom Poll, where we will give you a sneak peek into the lives and minds of some of the correspondents, writers, editors and producers here at MTVNews.com. Every week, they'll answer a poll question that will reveal some of what we talk about behind the scenes here in the newsroom. Enjoy!
This week, details surfaced about one of the most hotly anticipated albums of the fall. No, not Jay-z's The Blueprint 3 or Lil Wayne's Rebirth. We're talking about the soundtrack to "New Moon," which will likely feature contributions from Radiohead's Thom Yorke, Muse, Kings of Leon and Death Cab for Cutie. There was also the announcement of the soundtrack to "Jennifer's Body," the new Diablo Cody-penned horror film. With that, combined with the quarter-century anniversary of one of the finest film soundtracks ever constructed (that being Prince's Purple Rain), this week's question is:...

The Prodigy have vowed never to perform on TV. The dance music group's leader Liam Howlett doesn't think the atmosphere of a studio recorded show suits his band's spontaneous style of performance. He said: "We'll never perform on TV - that's just watering it down." His bandmate, vocalist Maxim Reality, added: "TV's not real to us. Being in front of 250 people cordoned into a studio, told where to dance - it's not a real performance." Keith Flint, 40, the band's other vocalist, explained the audience is an integral part of Prodigy's live experience, and helps turn their shows into an "explosion". It seems like an eternity since UK knob-twiddler Liam Howlett and his phenomenal techno act Prodigy transformed the music scene with their groundbreaking CD Fat of the Land – when singles like "Firestarter" and "Smack My Bitch Up" daringly asserted that stacks of synthesizers, drum machines and sampled breakbeats were not cold, inorganic constructs but could rock your ass off with that primal energy a lot of punk and metal acts seemed to have forgotten in the wake of navel-gazing Grunge. Like many of their contemporaries, the band helped push the rave scene out of the underground and into pop culture – which eventually spoiled the party, sending folks in search of something new. Liam's 2004 follow-up...
