Too many shows have popped up in recent times where woman-on-woman violence or presenting women as spiteful and unstable revenge-seekers has become a common theme. In times when social media is replete with memes that sport the caption “Women (teacup emoji),” shows and movies like For Her Sins only contribute to the trope that women are hysterical and unhinged. Airing on Channel 5, the 4-episode show leaves a bitter taste in your mouth, not just for the multiple plot holes that make the series stink but also for how unbelievably gullible the protagonist is. Starring Jo Joyner and Rachel Shenton as Laura and Emily, respectively, this is one ‘psychological thriller’ you won’t regret missing out on. Here’s a brief recap of For Her Sins.

Turns out it wasn’t a final goodbye from Australia’s Neighbours after all.
The iconic soap, about the Ramsay Street residents living in the fictional Erinsborough, has been saved from the scrapheap by Amazon’s free streamer Freevee, following a deal with program maker Fremantle.
A new series will begin filming in Australia next year, with the likes of Stefan Dennis, Alan Fletcher, Ryan Moloney and Jackie Woodburne reprising their roles. A premiere is slated for the second half of the year.
Watch a teaser for the new run here.
The daily series had bowed out on Network 10 in Australia and long-time British home Channel 5 in June after 37 years, after the Paramount-owned UK network pulled its funding from the show. Due to the costs of running a daily drama, Network 10 and Fremantle relied on a British co-funder to keep it going.

Cutting edge French director and screenwriter Céline Sciamma has been appointed as president of the jury at the Giornate degli Autori (aka Venice Days), a sidebar to the Venice Film Festival. She will preside over a special jury made up of 27 young European cinephiles present in a campus. “[Sciamma] has thoroughly upended the basic structure of our society and masterfully created new images and new memories. With her latest film, ‘Petite Maman,’ she has provided further proof that the prevailing canon of film production can indeed be challenged,” said Venice Days’ artistic director Gaia Furrer. Sciamma’s earlier credits include: “Bande de filles” in 2014; “Tomboy” in 2011 and “Naissance des Pieuvres” in 2009. The appointment is a homecoming of sorts for the director of “Portrait of a Lady on Fire,” ever since she was shortlisted for the 2014 Lux Prize at 27 Times Cinema, the initiative organized by Giornate degli Autori, the...

Paramount-owned British network Channel 5, Australia’s Network 10 and Fremantle are looking to a post-Neighbours future and working on a primetime thriller from Neighbours exec Jason Herbison, starring Stay Close actor Jo Joyner.
Filming will get underway shortly in Australia on four-parter Riptide, which will follow Alison (Joyner), whose life is plunged into despair when her new Australian husband vanishes after a morning surf. It quickly becomes obvious there is more to the story than meets the eye as she sets out to investigate his disappearance.
Joyner will play the lead and Herbison created the show. He was an exec on Channel 5/Network 10 miniseries Lie With Me and Neighbours, the soap produced by Fremantle for Channel 5 and Network 10’s (and streamer 10 Peach) that is about to end after three-and-a-half decades, as the UK network pushes further into original drama such as Riptide.
Joining Joyner is Ciarán Griffiths and Australian actors David Berry, Peter O’Brien, Ally Fowler (Wentworth), Pia Miranda, rising stars Benny Turland, Asher Yasbincek and Yazeed Dahar, and newcomers Benjamin Samaddar and Sonya Suares.
“Lie With Me proved incredibly popular with our viewers and I’m looking forward to expanding our drama slate even further, working hand in hand with our production partners Fremantle Australia and Network 10,” said Greg Barnett, Commissioning Editor, Factual Entertainment, Unscripted, Channel 5 & Paramount+.

Rooted in noir tradition, the suspense thriller of the “your past is catching up with you” variety is well-worn. So how does one reframe it in a way that feels at once fresh while also familiar, so as not to alienate increasingly impatient audiences? Therein lies the challenge for any new entries into the space, and one that Netflix’s latest Harlan Coben collaboration, “Stay Close,” ultimately fails, despite a decorated cast led by Cush Jumbo and James Nesbitt, even if their performances are the best thing about the series.
In “Stay Close,” Jumbo stars as Megan, a suburban mother of three whose previous life as a stripper named Cassie, along with the lives of those she thought she’d left in the past, come back to haunt her, threatening to ruin the perfect present-day reality she’s created for herself. The history summarized: once a popular dancer, one of...

It’s no accident that Harlan Coben’s Stay Close lands on Netflix on the 31st of December. That’s a precision release strategy calibrated to hit the exact spot between viewers’ reduced mental capacity and increased desire to gaze upon luxurious marble kitchen islands on the last day of the year. A Harlan Coben thriller is succour to a weakened state. With their gentle, leafy suburbs and upper middle-class homes – every soft-close cabinet of which is squirming with secrets – they make a binge-watch par excellence. Nothing nails you to your sofa quite like a ludicrously unlikely drama about people with big houses and dark pasts.
From Safe to The Five, The Stranger, and soon, Stay Close, here’s what makes the English-language Harlan Coben adaptations addictive yet undemanding viewing.

From ER to 30 Rock, EastEnders to The Simpsons, live TV drama and comedy episodes are here to stay...
In 1997, the Us TV network NBC gave permission for its highest rated show, the global medical drama hit ER, to produce an episode that would be broadcast to audiences completely live.
See related Poldark series 3 episode 2 review Poldark series 3 episode 1 review Poldark: a beginners’ guide
It’s hard to explain just how completely out of nowhere that decision was at the time. Live broadcasts began as a cornerstone of television, but once videotape came into use in the late 1950s, it was gradually confined to news bulletins and talent contests. By the 1990s, any comedy or drama that produced a live episode was usually perceived as a show suffering from flagging ratings or creative jaundice, one in dire need of an attention grabbing gimmick.
Let’s be clear – ER was none of those things.

Charlie Brooker's blink-and-you-miss-it comedy A Touch of Cloth is unlikely to come back for a fourth series, according to lead star John Hannah.
The Scottish actor told Digital Spy and others that the Sky1 cop drama piss-take is "dead", but he wanted to return as Jack Cloth.
"I imagine that's dead," he said. "I think it's been too long. I loved that show. Charlie wanted to do more, everyone did. It was Sky I guess. There might have been something to do with the negotiations, I don't know.
"We did the first one, then they wanted a lot more and Charlie wasn't sure he could sustain it over 12 episodes. So we did two more and then by the third one, they had figured out what they were doing. I think it's dead, it's a couple of years since we did that now."

Paul O'Grady has promised that we won't be seeing him on Strictly Come Dancing any time soon.
The TV personality told The Sun that he has seen the effect the show has on people - and admitted he might end up getting violent with the judges if they were mean.

"If I had done eight hours a day for five days and nearly killed myself and Craig Revel Horwood said, 'Well, frankly darling...', I'd smash his face in."
O'Grady isn't alone, as EastEnders star Jo Joyner recently ruled out an appearance on the show, saying: "I'd be rubbish - and clearly live is not my forte! They did ask - they've asked a couple of times and I would love to learn to dance, but... I'm a bit...

"I am really nervous about how it does in the ratings. I do feel a lot of pressure, but I just hope it does well. I know the producers and BBC are very happy with the outcome so hopefully the viewers will like it too."

The series, from BAFTA-winning writer Danny Brocklehurst, follows the employees of a motor showroom and explores how lies can cause lives to unravel.

The actress recently made a slip-up during the live shows marking EastEnders' 30th anniversary.
During a scene with Jane Beale (Laurie Brett), she referred to the character Ian Beale using the first name of the actor (Adam Woodyatt) who plays him.
The actress spoke out after the mistake, saying she was "upset" she had made it.

From the Queen Vic to the Tardis. As Eastenders prepares to mark its 30th anniversary, we look back at its encounters with Doctor Who...
Back in the mid-eighties an actor who played "Third Assistant" in a Doctor Who story called The Savages (1966) and the director of another Doctor Who adventure, The Underwater Menace (1967), came together to create one of the BBC’s most successful television shows.
And when they got together, it was murder. Well, not quite. (Though the first episode did feature a victim who would later die, fact fans.) But what they did create was Eastenders.
Broadcast on February the 19th 1985 (in between episodes one and two of The Two Doctors), this creation of Who alumni would go on to share numerous links with the long-running science-fiction for years to come. Even its time-slot owes much to the adventures of everyone’s favourite Gallifreyan.

We asked Den Of Geek’s writers to recommend brilliant comedy shows that deserve to have more of a fuss made about them. Here they are...
Banging a drum about stuff we love is more or less our remit on Den Of Geek - hence what many readers have started referring to as the ‘inexplicably regular' appearance of Statham, squirrels and Harold Bishop from Neighbours on these pages.
To that end then, we asked our writers which comedy shows (past and present, UK or otherwise, on TV, radio, or online…) deserved more praise, and here are the ones they chose. You might already like them too, or you might discover something new to dig out and enjoy. That’s the fun of it.

Sky has axed Nick Frost's drama Mr Sloane after one series.
The six-episode drama set in 1969 starred Frost as the hapless titular character, and was created by Curb Your Enthusiasm's Bob Weide.
Posting on the show's official Facebook page, the team spoke of their disappointment and confusion over the cancellation.
"The thinking behind this decision is a bit baffling even to us, since Sky had been very supportive during the first series, and claims the show to have been a success for them by every measure," the post read.
"However, there is a new channel head at Sky who, it seems, has a new agenda for the channel that doesn't include our pal, Sloaney. What that agenda is, we imagine, will become more evident over the coming year.

Watch Digital Spy's interview with Sheridan Smith about Cilla
ITV's Cilla Black biopic, which starred Sheridan Smith in the title role, launched with bumper ratings last night. Cilla attracted the channel's biggest drama audience launch since a little old show called Broadchurch and it has also won rave reviews.
Smith has been singled out in particular for her incredible performance as the Liverpudlian popstar in the swinging '60s and the only criticism that some viewers seemed to have was that she was too good a singer when she performed as Cilla. High praise indeed. Here is a roundup of the critics and Twitter verdicts:
The Critics:
The Telegraph
"Smith sang her heart out, catching perfectly the bluesy belter within the girl next door, but rather than rushing her to fame, the action unfolded slowly enough to show her falling at the first hurdle as she became crippled with nerves singing for Brian Epstein.

The singer-turned-presenter told the audience at ITV's Loose Women today (May 2) that she believes the corporation should "exercise zero tolerance" towards the 54-year-old, after footage emerged allegedly showing him uttering a racist term.
Jeremy Clarkson poll: Should he be fired by the BBC?
"He is very aware of the deep-rooted negative connotations associated with that word and whether you mumble it, whether you say it, it is not on," she explained.
"It is not acceptable and it is deeply offensive to too many people. He has got to go."
The 'Superstar' singer added: "He is in a position of power and influence and there are so many people of many different races who watch his shows and that should not be in your vocabulary, it should not be in your head."
