The East Coast portion of the 2024 GLAAD Media Awards was marked by two raucous moments at Saturday night’s Manhattan gala — one from Jennifer Lawrence, as she added some cutting, deadpan humor as she presented an achievement award and another when a drag artist and trans activist interrupted the gala’s proceedings to draw attention to the organization’s ties to Israel and its deadly military campaign in Gaza.
On Saturday at the Hilton hotel in Manhattan, Lawrence took the stage to present the Vito Russo Award to gay country singer Orville Peck. Before speaking of her friendship with Peck, the Oscar winner took a shot at former Vice President Mike Pence, who has been accused of, at one point, supporting gay conversion therapy.

Ross Matthews wasn’t three words into his opening monologue at the 35th annual GLAAD Awards in New York City Saturday evening when a protester stood up from the audience to shout, “GLAAD is complicit in genocide.” The lone pro-Palestine advocate, blanketed by a wide-eyed room who let out a few jeers — “Who are you, you weirdo?” one donor shouted — was slowly, if not ceremoniously escorted from the room before she gave a final jab: “And so are all of you.”
“Thank you for your free speech. I’m so glad you have freedom,” Matthews, the evening’s host, said from the stage in an awkward attempt to recognize the protester. “Well, that was uncomfy for all of us, but we have to fight for everyone’s rights. Thank you for my opener,” he moved on, back on his feet.

Following the postponement of his 2023 tour for health-related reasons and his departure from Columbia Records, Orville Peck attempts something of a reset with Stampede: Vol. 1. A seemingly straightforward project consisting of seven duets, the album reflects both the gay South African country singer’s dedication to the genre and his desire not to be confined by it. And as a symbol of this newfound sense of agency, Peck altered his trademark leather mask to reveal much more of his face (though still covering his eyes) in his live performances and videos.
While Peck’s vocals drew comparisons to that of an Elvis impersonator when he emerged on the scene with 2019’s Pony, he’s smartly chosen guest artists on Stampede: Vol. 1 whose voices effectively complement his own. On “How Far Will We Take It,” for instance, Noah Cyrus’s higher range provides a nice contrast to Peck’s deep, husky tone.

In their recap of the episode, Lawrence was happy to see Q reveal a “real human emotion moment” in how she felt some type away about Sapphira Cristál winning last week’s challenge. Both her and Trixie thought it was smart of her to not speak too much about her feelings though because she might have said something she regretted. In their recap of the episode, Jessica and Trixie agreed that Sapphira Cristál is a queen they would be intimidated to compete against because she’s so successful in many areas, and of course Trixie wanted to know Jessica’s thoughts on Morphine Love Dion‘s makeup skills. Referring to the mini challenge, Jessica said that Plane Jane is the most delusional on the cast and Trixie made the point that delusional drag queens are not a bad thing.

Watch the full episode above via the official RuPaul’s Drag Race channel on YouTube.
In their recap of the episode, Sasha and Trixie have fun addressing the “unsolicited shade” of this season and how even when Plane Jane calls anyone “sister” feels like subtle shade as well. Sasha gives Jane some defense by admitting that as drag queens they all “just have a crippling desire for people to love us” and Jane is no different. When it came to the reading challenge of her season, Sasha was impressed by Loosey Laduca and Malaysia Babydoll Foxx; this season the standouts for her were Jane and Xunami Muse.

Annette Bening had a defiant message for foes of LGBTQ rights and equality in the United States, specifically political leaders who are targeting the trans community. “You do not want to make this momma mad,” said the four-time Oscar nominee as she received Advocate Award on Oct. 28 from Glsen’s Rise Up LA benefit, which raised funds for the group’s programs supporting queer grade-school students across the country.
Bening — who is the mother of a trans son, writer Stephen Ira, as well as three other children — spoke at the event about why she has become increasingly vocal in advocating for the trans community in recent years.
“Most of my career, I’ve been a pretty private person … but over the last several years, I’ve changed my mind,” said Bening, explaining, “I have felt the responsibility to speak out and to speak up as transphobia has invaded our government at the local,...

Hear ye, hear ye! The Royal Court is now in session, with queen Brittany Broski presiding over the festivities.
Broski (real name Brittany Tomlinson) is the creator and host of a new interview series that will go live on her official YouTube channel. Royal Court will feature a Medieval milieu and a format designed to capitalize on the popularity of short-form clips. In a teaser for the show, Broski donned her most daunting furs and took some moody castle shots at Sands Point Preserve in New York.

In 21 seconds, she experienced every range of emotion and gave audiences their first introduction to a now beloved internet personality. But at the time, Broski tells Rolling Stone that it was one of the most humiliating moments of her life.

Musical tag-teaming doesn’t have results much more fruitful than what came about when the showrunners of “A Small Light” picked Ariel Marx to compose the score for the limited series and Este Haim to serve as executive music producer. Neither Haim nor Marx was in a position to take anything about the job lightly, given that the eight-episode series for National Geographic and Disney+ tells the story of a Dutch woman, Miep Gies, who helped hide Anne Frank and her family from the Nazis. Este Haim took on the Emp job for the first time with “A Small Light” after previously scoring or co-composing “Maid” and “Cha Cha Smooth” — on top of her day job as one-third of the rocking sister trio Haim. For “A Small Light,...

“Obviously, there’s a lot of parts of this country where people don’t feel safe so we have to band together to make people as safe as we can,” country music star Orville Peck told the audience at the WeHo Pride’s Outloud music festival on Saturday, referring to the wave of anti-trans and anti-drag legislation that is upending lives and spreading fear in states across the country, including Texas and Florida.
