(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
"We do very much have the ambition about creating a bigger universe around Spider-Man." These were the words uttered by former Sony Pictures Entertainment chief Michael Lynton after an investor meeting in November 2013. Those words would become the undoing of the franchise solely under Sony's stewardship, with 2014's "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" serving as the nail in the coffin. With the benefit of hindsight, we might be looking at the most outright financially successful franchise-killer in cinema history.
The Andrew Garfield-led "Spider-Man" films remain a tragic mixed bag. There are those who adore Garfield as Marvel's famed webslinger. There are many others who can't get past the messy direction the films themselves wandered down -- particularly this sequel we're talking about today.

General Hospital viewers have been missing John J. York, who plays Malcolm “Mac” Scorpio on the long-running soap, but there is a sign he could soon be returning to Port Charles. York hasn’t been seen on the show since last November, as he’s been undergoing cancer treatment. The actor announced last September that he’d be taking a “brief hiatus” from General Hospital, later revealing he’d been battling Myelodysplastic Syndrome (Mds) and multiple smoldering myeloma since December 2022. After beginning blood stem cell transplant treatment in November, York has been on the mend and is now set to make his first public appearance alongside his on-screen wife, Kristina Wagner (Felicia). The pair will host a special Zoom fan event on Sunday, July 14, where viewers will get to hang out with the beloved soap duo. “So much to talk about,” York said on X (formerly Twitter) while promoting the upcoming event.

When the internet spent the better part of a week in February roasting a Willy Wonka-themed family event in Glasgow gone wrong, there was a lot to laugh about: the mostly undecorated warehouse venue, the AI-generated advertising, the lack of chocolate, and, of course, the sad Oompa Loompa.
The local actors hired to improvise based off a garbled script (also written by AI) wound up dishing on the disaster in interviews, and some have since leveraged their viral fame: that Oompa Loompa (real name Kristy Paterson) is selling Cameo greetings,...

Former Teen Mom star David Eason is claiming that his estranged wife, Jenelle Evans, cheated on him. The two have had constant ups and downs and their separation is being questioned. So, what does Eason have to say about his wife right now? Read on for more details.
Teen Mom David Eason Claims Jenelle Cheated On Him
Only a few years into their marriage, David Eason took Jenelle Evans’ dog into the woods and proceeded to kill it. That was enough to make her gather her children and leave. It also caused her and her husband to be let go from the MTV series, Teen Mom. She had been on the show since she was a teenager on 16 & Pregnant with her eldest child, Jace. Therefore, this was a major blow to her. It looked like she and David were done for good but she returned to the marriage. They continued...

In the end the delayed release date for “Poor Things” (Searchlight) due to the actors strike boosted the movie into the holiday box office derby. Yorgos Lanthimos‘ Frankenstein’s monster film wowed audiences and critics at the fall festivals and has grossed more than $104 million worldwide. Oscar winner Emma Stone (“La La Land”) won the Comedy Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards and the BAFTA (where she wasn’t up against Lily Gladstone) and could take home another gold statue. Anonymous Oscar Ballot: Costume Designer Celebrates ‘American Fiction,’ ‘Barbie,’ and Lily Gladstone
With final Oscar balloting closed on February 27 we’re continuing with our seventh annual series of interviews with Academy voters from different branches for their unfiltered takes on what got picked, overlooked, and overvalued in the 2023 award season. Interview edited for brevity.
Generally, this has been a lackluster year. The Academy portal helps. I watched 25 international films in order to vote. It’s a lot easier to do that from the comfort of one’s home, if you don’t live next door to the Academy.
Best Picture
“American Fiction” spoke to me. I liked the message and the way it was done. It was my first choice.
“Past Lives” was powerful.
“Anatomy of a Fall” was great. I loved the journey that it took you on. You’re not sure at the end what happened. I loved the ambiguity of it, watching the French court world play out, all...

Kaledonia Pictures, the production company making Wonka experience-inspired film The Unknown, appears to be rather new, with its website only appearing a matter of days ago.
The past day has brought a new twist to the ongoing saga of the Willy’s Chocolate Experience in Glasgow, which went viral in late February: a production company called Kaledonia Pictures is working on a film loosely based on it, called The Unknown. It’s said to be some sort of supernatural horror about a “renowned illustrator and his wife who are haunted by the tragic death of their son,” and encounter an “unknowable evil” in the Scottish Highlands.
Filmmakers hurriedly cashing in on events isn’t new – hence the assorted horror films based on the newly-out-of-copyright Steamboat Willie that are currently in the works.
What is somewhat odd about The Unknown, however, is that Kaledonia Pictures has almost no internet footprint whatsoever.

The Unknown, the villain at the viral Willy Wonka Experience is getting their own horror movie, because of course they are. More on the story below.
Only a week after Glasgow’s Willy Wonka Experience went viral, a new horror film centred on The Unknown has been announced. The film will simply be titled The Unknown and will follow a couple who have recently lost their son.
Photos from the experience, including one of The Unknown, spread online like wildfire after the police were reportedly called to the event which left children in tears and parents furious. The event was marketed with highly misleading, AI-generated artwork. The company behind the event, House of Illuminati, have promised full refunds to visitors.
The news of the new horror film comes via Bloody Disgusting, who report that Scotland-based production company Kaledonia Pictures is working on it. The Unknown has bugger all to do...

Some directors can be genuine pains to work for. Maybe they’re volatile, maybe their vision isn’t clear, maybe they ask for too much from their actors. For Bradley Cooper, it was the ridiculous demands of his Maestro director that drove him crazy. Wait a minute…
At a recent event (via People), Bradley Cooper joked that the biggest onset challenge making Maestro was “the f*cking director.” The self-deprecation also served as a highlight of some of the movie’s technical aspects. “He had these crazy demands like shooting in black and white, 35-millimeter stock and a 1:3:3 aspect ratio, and half the movie had black and white, and shooting it live and wanting to be on location.” And this is all without mentioning his 1 a.m. call times! He added, “And we were losing our minds. But we all band[ed] together and we tried to give him what he wanted.

Carey Mulligan has more than lived up to her promise. The English actor was an obvious, stand-out talent early in her career, whether she was playing one of the Bennett sisters in Joe Wright’s “Pride & Prejudice” adaptation or in an acclaimed one-episode appearance in BBC’s “Doctor Who.” When 2009 saw her receive a Best Actress nomination for her role in the acclaimed drama “An Education,” it seemed to mark the emergence of a great new young actor.
And since that breakthrough, Mulligan has only continued to go from strength to strength. An actor’s actor with the ability to fully embody the complicated women she’s often cast as, Mulligan consistently picks interesting, juicy parts, in films as varied as “Never Let Me Go,” “Drive,” “Shame,” “Far from the Madding Crowd,” and “Mudbound.” As she’s gotten a little older and aged out of the young ingenue parts...

Before scoring three Oscar nominations this year for Netflix’s Maestro — including best picture, actor and original screenplay (the latter shared with Josh Singer) — Bradley Cooper had already garnered an impressive nine Academy Award nominations as an actor (Silver Linings Playbook in 2013, American Hustle in 2014, American Sniper in 2015 and A Star Is Born in 2019), a producer (American Sniper, A Star Is Born, Joker in 2020 and Nightmare Alley in 2022) and a writer (A Star Is Born). His latest crop of nods makes him a 12-time nominee across those three categories and one of the most successful multi-hyphenates working in film today.
So it’s fitting that the star would take on Leonard Bernstein as the subject for his sophomore feature, which features Cooper as the enigmatic composer and conductor — with co-star and fellow Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan playing Bernstein’s wife, Felicia Montealegre. Rather than your typical biopic, however, Maestro looks...

Not many people have seen "Madame Web" and an even smaller slice of the moviegoing population like the movie.
It stuck out to me that star Dakota Johnson seems to be under the impression that the film was set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I don't know if this is Sony Pictures feeding the actors and/or their agents misleading information or if movie stars like Johnson (understandably) can't be bothered to learn the nerdy logistics of these franchises.
Still, this got me thinking how the Marvel Cinematic Universe doesn't have a "no previous superhero roles" bar to entry. Oscar Isaac, who played the villain in the disastrous "X-Men: Apocalypse," was then recruited to star in "Moon Knight." Christian Bale, a generation's Dark Knight, played Gorr the God Butcher in "Thor: Love and Thunder" because of his children's pleading.
In "Madame Web," Sydney Sweeney plays Julia Cornwall, the future Spider-Woman.

When Bradley Cooper’s sophomore directorial outfit Maestro, an ambitious and extravagant Leonard Bernstein biopic, debuted at Venice, none of the film’s stars or crew made it on to the red carpet. SAG was 51 days deep into its strike against the studios.
The experience of observing the premiere and subsequent raves from afar had “actually been better than usual,” two-time Oscar nominee and Maestro DoP Matthew Libatique told Deadline. Libatique was calling into us at Poland’s EnergaCamerimage Film Festival, where Maestro is playing in the main cinematography-focused competition.
“It’s actually a lot of work when promoting a film. I’ve always been a fan of just putting the work out there and letting people decide whether or not they like it without me saying anything,” he added.
Maestro tells the complex love story of Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein (Carey Mulligan) — a story that spans over 30 years.

Almost every year, there is at least one performer who finally takes home that elusive Oscar. In 2022, Jessica Chastain won for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” after two prior nominations, and, in 2020, Joaquin Phoenix prevailed for “Joker” after three previous bids. Expect this year to be no different — we have a whole crew searching for their first Oscar wins after years of nominations, near-misses, or just plain being snubbed. Here are a so far unlucky seven contenders who could break that curse this year and win long overdue Oscars. (We’ve updated this post to include Ryan Gosling after his absence was pointed out by several readers.)

In her graceful portrayal of Felicia Montealegre Bernstein in “Maestro” — opposite director Bradley Cooper — Carey Mulligan turns what might have been Cooper’s solo performance into a duet. Born in Costa Rica and raised in Chile, Felicia is an up-and-coming actor in New York City when she goes to a party and meets Lenny, an ambitious conductor and composer. After they marry in 1951, she has three children with her lightning bolt of a husband, who is sexually oriented more toward men.
But she’s not pathetic; Felicia is Lenny’s partner in every sense of the word. In a way, Felicia is the consummate Mulligan performance: Her simmering interiority meshes with Cooper’s magnetism, which is Mulligan’s own form of conducting.
Mulligan first began talking to Cooper about “Maestro” in the summer of 2018, after he came to see her in the Off Broadway play “Girls & Boys.” Cooper had completed “A Star Is Born,...

After the double evictions of Blue Kim and America Lopez, the remaining “Big Brother 25” houseguests competed in the Final 5 Head of Household competition to see who would win power for the week. Outgoing Hoh Bowie Jane was not eligible to compete, but the others all duked it out in the backyard, with the ultimate winner going on to nominate two houseguests for eviction. So how did it all play out on Sunday night?

Hey,"Big Brother" fans. We're back in your faces with another new update from inside the Big Brother season 25 house. Yesterday afternoon, October 28, 2023, the latest Pov (Power Of Veto) competition was played, and we have the results for it in this article. Before we tell you who won the Pov, we're going to do a quick recap of this week so far for those of you who aren't up to speed on everything. This past Thursday night, October 26, 2023, Matt was able to secure the latest Hoh (Head Of Household) win to become the new Hoh this week. On Friday, October 27, 2023, Matt decided to nominate Felicia and Cirie for eviction with Felicia being the main target. That all brings us to yesterday's October 28, 2023 Pov competition. Everyone got to play in this Pov comp since we're down to just 5 houseguests. When it was all played and done, it was Jag who emerged...

Hey, "Big Brother" fans. We're back in your faces, right now, to give you guys some more very important updates from inside the Big Brother season 25 house. Last night, October 26, 2023, the latest Hoh (Head of House Hold) competition was played. Then, the eviction nomination ceremony took place earlier today, October 27,2023, and we have the results of those events for you in this article. As we previously reported, Blue and America were voted off and sent packing to the jury house in last night's Live, double eviction episode. Then, the latest Hoh competition was played and finished at around 10:36 pm pacific standard time, and it was Matt who emerged as the winner. So, it looks like Matt and Jag will indeed just steamroll their way to the end since no one else in this group besides Bowie seems to be able to win anything. Anyways, today's eviction nomination ceremony took...

Unfortunately, the American Revolution on “Big Brother 25” did not start on Thursday night. America Lopez got a reprieve this week as the pawn against Blue, but she knew it was do-or-die for her in the next Hoh and was determined to split up Jag and Matt. And that next Hoh came right away with the double eviction. But Bowie Jane, Matt and Jag’s third wheel, won and put her up alongside Felicia, and then Matt won the Veto, ensuring America’s eviction and that she’ll be reunited with Cory in the jury house. The superfan spent the commercial break begging Bowie not to put her up to no avail.
“I’m looking at Bowie and I’m telling her, ‘Bowie, do not put me up. I am going to go home. They told me I am going to go home. I heard that I’m next on their list to go home.

Well, Jag did not win Hoh for the third week in a row on “Big Brother 25.” Matt won, but that’s basically the same.
As the credits rolled on Thursday’s episode, Matt told Cirie he’ll never put her up if he wins. He later told Jag and Bowie they’re safe, which anyone could’ve guessed. Maybe the man forgot how many people are left, but he doesn’t have a lotta options here, so Cirie will be an initial nom alongside Felicia, the only person he never promised safety. Matt said he’ll reassure Cirie she’s just a pawn and she needs to trust him. However, Jag and Bowie are considering booting Cirie instead of Felicia.
See ‘Big Brother 25’ spoilers: Cirie is so over Felicia, whose target moves up a few spots
Cirie and Felicia figure they’re probably going up and discussed how they could stay in the game.

Hey, "Big Brother" fans. Tonight, October 26, 2023,another new, Live, double eviction episode for big Brother's current season 25 did indeed hit the air , and we saw two more houseguests get evicted and sent to the jury house by the time it was all wrapped up. Tonight's new, double eviction episode kicked off with footage of what tookplace in the house after reigning POVwinner Jag decided notto use the veto to save America or Blue from the eviction chopping block at the last Pov ceremony. Jag told the Diary room aka private cameras, "Blue is my target this week." Cirie told the private cams, "I prefer if Blue stayed. She's the best competitor to help us go afer Jag. I want Jag to be the one to vote off Blue in a tie breaker if he wants her out so bad." Felicia told the private cams, "I need to get Jag...

America Lopez became the 12th houseguest to exit the “Big Brother 25” house (and fourth to join the jury) when she was evicted by a vote of 3-0 Thursday night. The 27-year old medical receptionist from Brooklyn, New York was ousted on Day 87 over Felicia Cannon. Head of Household Bowie Jane kept it simple when she came into power on double eviction night. She held true to her final three deal with Jag Bains and Matt Klotz while targeting two people she actually had a chance to beat on finale night.
“I knew they were coming after me,” America told host Julie Chen Moonves during her exit interview. “It was between me and Felicia! Of course they’re gonna keep her over me. It’s Matt and Jag. I don’t trust them. I said that I was coming after them! I told everybody that I was coming after them. I didn’t stand a chance.

Only seven people were left in the Big Brother house vying for the $750,000 prize, but by the end of Thursday’s live double eviction, two more houseguests saw their dream of winning go up in smoke.
At the start of the episode, Blue is still pretty certain that she’s not the target. Cirie, however, wants to force a tie so that Jag will have to cut Blue to her face, live on national television. It’s a decent plan that would secure Blue’s vote if Cirie could make it happen, but let’s be real: It’s a longshot.

For the second time this season, two houseguests were about to be evicted on “Big Brother 25.” However, unlike the last double eviction, there would be no zombie comeback twist to save one of their games. The first person booted would be either America Lopez or Blue Kim, as they were both nominated by Head of Household Jag Bains. Following that ouster, we would see an entire week’s worth of gameplay, with an Hoh comp, a nominations ceremony, a Veto challenge, a Veto meeting and a second eviction.

Felicia has put in so much work this week to sabotage Cirie on “Big Brother 25,” but Cirie just needs a couple hours to completely turn things around.
After learning Tuesday night that Felicia’s been running her mouth, Cirie’s completely done with Felicia. And it’s hilarious. Her quick chats with Matt and Jag got her back in good standing, and that continued into Wednesday, with Bowie aware that Felicia’s been trying to point the target on Cirie’s back. It’s remarkable how comfortable Cirie makes everyone feel because she never has to overplay her hand or hold multiple convos like many houseguests do to make her case. She can just do a quickie one-on-one and the person is almost immediately on board with her/sees the light. Now everyone’s fed up with Felicia and she’s risen up as a top target in the double for Matt,...

"If the summer doesn't sing in you, then nothing sings in you. And if nothing sings in you, then you can't make music."
This quote is featured prominently in the new trailer for "Maestro," the latest directorial effort from Bradley Cooper, which you can watch above. It's clear that something is really singing for Bradley Cooper with this film, whether it's summer or something else entirely, because this film looks like it is filled with his blood, sweat and tears.
"Maestro" tells the story of acclaimed composer Leonard Bernstein (played by Cooper himself) and the lifelong relationship and marriage he shared with Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein (Carey Mulligan), which included a fair share of complications because Bernstein also identified as homosexual. But as the official synopsis for the movie describes the movie, "A love letter to life and art, 'Maestro' at its core is an emotionally epic portrayal of family and love.

"If summer doesn't sing in you, then nothing sings in you. And if nothing sings in you, then you can't make music." So says Leonard Bernstein (Bradley Cooper) in the new trailer for Maestro, which charts the career of legendary composer/conductor Leonard Bernstein. The quote, however, comes from his wife Felicia, played by Carey Mulligan. It's the anchor quote for this latest look at Cooper's new directorial effort, and you can see the footage below.
The drama spans over 30 years, and chronicles Bernstein’s fascinating career: he made his conducting debut at the New York Philharmonic aged 25 when he had to step in at short notice due to a colleague’s illness. He did so well, his star was launched the next day when his feat made the front page of The New York Times.

Let the music pull on your heartstrings and allow you to get overcome with emotion as Netflix releases the new trailer for Bradley Cooper’s new directorial effort, Maestro. Not only is this Cooper’s sophomore outing as a director, it’s also his second venture into the world of music and the artists behind it. In addition to directing, Cooper co-wrote the script with Josh Singer. Singer spoke of the film via Netflix’s Tudum, “I think people will see the complexity of marriage and the many forms love can take. I think those are both powerful themes.” The teaser debuted in August, and Cooper faced a bit of a backlash due to his prosthetic nose for the character drawing controversy.
The synopsis of the plot reads,
“Billed as an emotionally epic examination of family and love, Maestro tells the complex love story of Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre...

The latest trailer for Netflix’s upcoming biopic Maestro reveals the personal costs of being in the orbit of one of the greatest American composers and conductors.
Directed, co-written by and starring Bradley Cooper, the biopic traces the life and work of Leonard Bernstein (Cooper) amid his great and complicated love affair with wife Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein, portrayed by Carey Mulligan. “One can be as free as one likes without guilt or confession,” Mulligan’s Felicia says to Cooper’s Leonard. “Please, I know exactly who you are.”
But the heart of the composer of Broadway’s West Side Story and the first American-born-and-trained music director of the New York Philharmonic was as complex as the mind of the arrangements, the new two-minute trailer reveals. “There’s a price for being in my brother’s orbit, you know that,” Sarah Silverman’s Shirley Bernstein tells Felicia.

“Maestro” is almost at the podium.
The anticipated new feature from Bradley Cooper, which chronicles the life of composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein (Cooper) and his wife Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein (Carey Mulligan), is in theaters on November 22 before hitting Netflix on December 20. And you can watch the brand-new trailer above.
What makes this trailer so gripping is that it showcases the epic sweep and scope of the story, which covers Leonard and Felicia’s romance and life together – even the way the camera moves suggests a conductor pulling the strings of an orchestra. It’s the complicated relationship of Leonard and Felicia that seems to serve as the movie’s narrative engine, as the story of their lives (both public and hidden) unfolds alongside his artistic and humanitarian efforts.

Felicia has spent the past few days driving the bus over Cirie on “Big Brother 25.” Well, Cirie finally returned the favor on Tuesday.
The day started with Felicia literally waking Jag up because she couldn’t wait to tell him some hot goss. She said that she has learned from Cirie that Matt has talked to her about the best time to take Jag out, whether in the double eviction or final four. It is true that Matt told Cirie he’d take a shot at Jag at final four on Monday, which Cirie later told Felicia. A groggy Jag was shocked and Felicia continued her innocent “Hey, I’m just telling you what I heard” thing. She said that Cirie wants a split vote to force Jag to break the tie to evict Blue, which he was not against. Then basically the entire day was everyone discussing the benefits...

Michelle Williams’ impression of Justin Timberlake has gone viral, with fans calling it Oscar-worthy.
The Academy Award-winning actress made headlines after the announcement that she would narrate the audiobook for Britney Spears’ memoir “The Woman in Me.” A fellow former young TV star like Spears, the “Dawson’s Creek” alum channels a specific accent when reading a section involving Spears’ ex Timberlake trying to impress singer Ginuwine in New York City.

As expected, Jag did not use the Veto on Monday on “Big Brother 25” and both Blue and America are cool with it. That’s because both believe they’re staying.
Yes, Blue is still completely oblivious she’s the actual target this week. Jag has not given her a heads-up yet, so she’s proceeding like she’s a pawn. She did some light campaigning, but nothing has indicated she even suspects the vote could flip on her this week. Truly wild for someone who’s been given multiple warnings that Jag and Matt are after her and was already on the block last week. At this point, she could be in the jury house and still be in denial that Jag and Matt wanted her out.

Every year, there are one or two performers who finally land the Oscar wins that they have been long overdue. Last year, Michelle Yeoh and Jamie Lee Curtis both won for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” after years of never quite getting the attention they deserved. In 2022, Jessica Chastain won for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” after two prior nominations, and, in 2020, Joaquin Phoenix won for “Joker” after three previous bids. Expect this year to be no different — we have a whole crew of actors all searching for their first Oscar wins after years of nominations, near-misses, or just plain being snubbed. Here are eight actors who could break that curse this year.
