Celebrating messiahs from the underbelly of any society is nothing new. Nevertheless, there has been a serious dearth of noir films in the history of Bangla cinema. Every time the city is seen in cinema, it remains visually stunning. Yet, surprisingly, the underdogs are carefully swept under the carpet. Under the project of the beautification of the city, there has been no place for slums, everyday violence, brothels and other kinds of chotoloks (downtrodden). Yet, without them, the State and the bhodrolok community, who write the history of any decade from above, would be a sham. Bratya Basu's “Hubba” (Don/ 2024/133mns) depicts the life and rise of Hubba Shyamal aka Bimal (his screen name) and the volatile nexus of politics within the underworld. In other words, it is a biopic on the notorious gangster Hubba Shyamal in the 1990s Hooghly, played by popular Bangladeshi actor Mosharraf Karim.

Shane Black's 2013 film "Iron Man 3" (or "Iron Man Three" as it is titled on-screen) is handily one of the best films in the long-running and now-pretty-much-dead Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is a clever, witty film that forces Tony Stark to solve a mystery and face off against bad guys without a fully functioning Iron Man suit. It displayed how capable Stark was as a wise human being as opposed to a mere superhuman. The end of the trilogy also brought the "Iron Man" story to an effective conclusion. We'll simply have to ignore that Iron Man appeared in other films after it.

The new Netflix movie Mamasapano is an account of the tragic deaths of 44 policemen who died while trying to catch Philippines’ most wanted terrorists, Marwan and Usman, in the area of the Philippines known as Mamasapano. The film basically attacks the Philippine government of the time and questions its intentions towards its police force. The men were supposed to return safely to their families, but the infamous peace project meant that a ceasefire couldn’t be imposed, and the men continued to die. The film becomes a bureaucratic thriller, where insiders have a lot more information than they show to the media, hiding behind their plausible deniability. The way the movie’s made, it’s confusing at times to keep track of the 55th and the 84th Special Action Company (Sac), who were the main units who were massacred by the rebels of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (Milf).

Updated, with White House comment: TikTok announced today that it was removing videos that have popped up on the platform in which users of various ages and ethnicities promote Osama bin Laden’s “Letter to America,” which he had written to justify the attacks on 9/11.
“Content promoting this letter clearly violates our rules on supporting any form of terrorism,” TikTok said in a message posted on X/Twitter. “We are proactively and aggressively removing this content and investigating how it got onto our platform.”
The platform, however, disputed the extent to which the videos went viral, calling reports of them trending as “inaccurate.”

Robert J. O’Neill, a former Navy Seal who said he killed Osama bin Laden, was arrested last week in Frisco, Texas.
He was taken to jail last Wednesday and released on a $3,500 bond. Frisco police said O’Neill was charged with misdemeanors for assault and public intoxication.
According to social media posts, O’Neill was in Frisco to record a podcast.
He first said in 2014 that he fired the shots that killed bin Laden in 2011. The U.S. government has not commented on O’Neill’s statement.
He also wrote a memoir, entitled The Operator, about his experience in the military.

Last month, to my great surprise, I raved about a Guy Ritchie movie, “Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre,” as an exhilarating exception to the rule of Ritchie’s style-over-substance, more-frosting-than-cake school of crime-thriller grandiloquence. Toys have been a part of marketing for shows and films for a long time. The Masters of the Universe line of action figures came before the animated series, as we learned in the Netflix docuseries "The Toys That Made Us." The first "Star Wars" film toys were part of a mail-away campaign in 1978 before they were ready to be shipped. Toy marketing has also caused controversy in the past. Just think of the #WheresRey campaign when her figure was left out of a "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" Monopoly set.

"G.I. Joe" hasn't endured the way its 1980s boys' toy franchise contemporaries "Transformers" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" have. Whenever one "Transformers" or "Tmnt" cartoon ends, a new one pops on the air in no time at all, whereas the most recent "Joe" cartoon, "Renegades," ended in 2011.
Of these three series, "G.I. Joe" is the one most tied to its era of origin. The 1980s were a more conservative and patriotic time in the United States. As new episodes of "A Real American Hero" aired every Saturday morning, the Cold War was reaching its anti-climax. "Transformers" and "Tmnt" have both proven capable of reinventing themselves "G.I. Joe" has its eccentricities (such as the rival ninjas Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow), but it's ultimately boxed into its military theme. "G.I. The latest artificial intelligence tool to sweep social media is “Historical Figures Chat,” a novelty that currently sits at the #34 spot in the “Education” section of Apple‘s app store. “With this app, you can chat with deceased individuals who have made a significant impact on history from ancient rulers and philosophers, to modern day politicians and artists,” the description claims. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is one of the most powerful men on the planet. From his obvious traits, like his insane physique and charisma, to his more mysterious abilities, like how he somehow knew about Osama Bin Laden's death before almost anybody else, it's no wonder people were not unseriously throwing his name around as a presidential candidate.
When Johnson isn't busy changing the hierarchy of power within the DC Extended Universe, he makes insane amounts of money by starring in tons of movies. He's the sort of electric performer who it's easy to give any part to, whether it be the singing demigod Maui in "Moana" or the literal tooth fairy in "Tooth Fairy." As 60 Minutes embarks on its 55th season on CBS, corporate sibling Pluto TV is launching a curated channel dedicated to the program.
Because Pluto is a free, ad-supported streaming service outside of the pay-tv bundle, don’t expect the latest first-run episodes on the new channel. Instead, it will offer an exclusive collection of more than 400 segments drawn from the archives.
Bill Owens, the executive producer of 60 Minutes, had signaled to staffers last June that the Pluto brand extension was in the works. While the move follows several others involving various CBS properties looking for extra visibility among Pluto’s nearly 70 million monthly active users, it is a fairly rare experiment for 60 Minutes. In 2020, the series teamed with short-lived mobile video purveyor Quibi on 60 in 6, a short-form spinoff. It did not survive after Quibi shut down after just a few months of operation.

"Of the 300,000 soldiers in the Peshmerga Army, more than 20,000 have suffered different types of ‘war injuries’, serious or of permanent nature, though not fatal. My work is to prepare a master-plan on how to rehabilitate these 20,000 war heroes and help them lead near-normal lives," Dr. Mahajan told Ians from Erbil.

The scourge of the opioid crisis has been documented in the press and in government reports; the culpability of the Sacklers, the multi-billionaire pharmaceutical family whose former company Purdue made the painkiller Oxycontin, has been successfully dramatized. The Sacklers are everywhere in Laura Poitras’ gripping documentary All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, but they are supporting players.
At its center is Nan Goldin, the 68-year-old photographer who was prescribed Oxycontin, quickly became addicted to it, found recovery through a replacement drug and then threw her energies into calling the Sacklers to account. Goldin became the most public face of the campaigning group Pain, leading the charge into museums with Sackler wings, Sackler rooms and Sackler money to shame their well-heeled executives into cutting those ties. The Sacklers might have hijacked Goldin’s body, but she could at least work to turf them out of the places that held her pictures.
