Deb Never has released her new EP, Thank You for Attending, today via Moonlanding.
With six songs running 17 minutes, Thank You for Attending is a compact presentation of Never’s artistry. Between its bouncing pop hooks, grungy guitar soundscapes, and breakbeat-inspired dancey moments, the EP is a synthesis of genres and moods, and Never’s inward-facing lyricism serves as a through-line. Her “final” EP, the release is also a jumping-off point for a new stage of her career, building up to an eventual full-length debut.
“Thank You for Attending is a collection of songs inspired by anecdotal moments in my life, where I’ve felt the high of life, the comforting moments of love, and the pain of its aftermath,” Never said in a statement. “It’s my dear and final EP that I’m excited to perform and showcase to fans all over the world and give them the experience of Deb Never.

Omar Apollo put a new spin on the classic “California Dreamin'” as part of his entry into Spotify’s Singles series, where artists contribute a new version of one of their songs along with a cover of another artist.
The Mexican-American singer conjured up the same moodiness and mystique found in the Mamas & the Papas’ original, using a slightly different method: The sparse arrangement twists his echoing vocals around strumming acoustic guitar and a hissing organ. Apollo also included a chilled-out, downtempo version of his song “Go Away.”

Omar Apollo performed his new single “Go Away” on The Tonight Show, complete with a cinematic storyline and sets. In the clip, the singer waits at a bus stop with his suitcase, boards a plane alongside three dancers, and then ascends into the clouds, where he finishes the lovelorn tune.
Apollo premiered “Go Away” earlier this month, marking the singer’s first new music since releasing his project Apolonio last year. Apollo produced “Go Away” with the help of Carter Lang and Chromeo.

Omar Apollo has returned with a new lovelorn song, “Go Away.”
Anchored by a slick groove and fleshed out with gauzy synths and stray guitar lines, “Go Away” finds Apollo pining for a partner as he taps into his falsetto on the hook, “But if you had to go away again/I just don’t see you enough/I wish you saw you enough/It’s something in the way I feel your skin/I just don’t see you enough/I wish I saw you enough.”

It’s not too difficult to imagine the impulse behind a song like “Cancelled,” the second single from the British rapper Slowthai’s new album, Tyron. The track features Skepta and follows a familiar revenge fantasy: our anti-hero MCs versus the proverbial naysayers, who in this case are the online agents of so-called cancel culture. At this point it’s an exhausting form of discourse. There are few things more unappealing than thinking about what people have to say on the internet. But throughout Tyron, Slowthai appears to be reckoning...

Northampton, situated about 90 minutes north of London in Britain’s East Midlands, is best known for making shoes. Its residents have been churning out footwear since the 17th century, when they provided the boots worn by Parliamentarian soldiers in the English Civil War, and the town remains home to some of the best shoemakers in the world. “People travel to get these shoes, and that’s always been the thing we’re known for,” says Slowthai, 26. “It makes people think it’s a bubble here, like this is as far as it goes.

It’s no great observation, but often the best thing a so-called “bedroom” artist can do is, well, leave the bedroom.
Last year, Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Deb Never — who’s garnered attention and acclaim for intimate songs that thread the gaps between alt-rock, grunge, and the lo-fi ends of pop and hip-hop — channeled the first few months of the Covid-19 lockdown into a lovely quarantine collection, Intermission (released only on Bandcamp, with all the proceeds going to pandemic relief efforts). But in the wake of that project, a creative malaise sunk in.
