There wasn’t a dry eye in the house among the full cast and crew on the last day of filming Ted Lasso‘s season three. The shot was in the fictional Richmond Fc locker room before its championship game against rival West Ham — and before beloved coach Ted Lasso, played by Jason Sudeikis (who’s nominated for lead actor and writing in addition to comedy series), was scheduled to return to the U.S. Instead of his usual pep talk, Lasso introduces a video, looking back at the team’s growth. “The tears are real,” says Declan Lowney, who directed this episode and eight others during the three seasons of the 11-time Emmy-winning Apple TV+ series. (Its 10 noms this year include nods to most of the talent mentioned in this story.) Famously based on a 2013 NBC Sports promo, Sudeikis’ depiction of an American college football coach who moves to...

The Best Comedy Series Casting Emmy category is one where repeat wins should generally not be expected, since the only show to achieve that feat in well over a decade was “Veep” in 2016 and 2017. Most of Gold Derby’s participating users seem to have kept this in mind while making their 2023 Emmy picks, given that former casting winners “Ted Lasso” (2021) and “Abbott Elementary” (2022) are trailing new shows “The Bear” and “Jury Duty” in the current race. However, there is still no obvious consensus among them as to which freshman series will actually take the gold.
The final slot in this year’s comedy casting lineup is filled by “Only Murders in the Building,” which, like “Abbott Elementary,” was first recognized here last year. After 2000, 2007, and 2021, this is only the fourth time that every nominated show in this category consists of no more than three seasons. In addition to “Ted Lasso,...

“The one thing about this show is there is no egos,” admits Maximilian Osinski about his guest turn on the third season of “Ted Lasso.” For our recent webchat he continues, “Every day and every moment on set, everybody is working hard as if it’s the first day of the pilot.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
The show tells the story of optimistic American Ted (Jason Sudeikis), coaching a struggling soccer team in the English Premiere League. The series has won the Emmy for Best Comedy Series for the past two seasons. Osinski plays Zava, a mid-season star recruit to the team. The actor says, “Guest starring roles on an established show like Ted Lasso, that has won all these awards, is one of the hardest jobs as an actor. Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for Season 3, Episode 6 of “Ted Lasso,” now streaming on Apple TV+.
Shortly before Billy Harris landed the role of footballer Colin Hughes on the Apple TV+ smash “Ted Lasso,” he found himself without an agent. Rather than be discouraged, though, he sent a note to casting director Theo Park to let them know to keep him in mind for an upcoming project. “Lo and behold, a day later, this email came in about a show called ‘Ted Lasso,’” Harris recalls. Harris had only recently graduated from Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, and the show marked his television debut. Though little was known about the character in the first season, the actor relished the opportunity to learn the ropes from what he calls “the best of the best.”
Now in its third season, Harris finds himself at the epicenter of a major storyline on the show.

Apple TV+’s smash hit comedy series “Ted Lasso” features a mix of comedy, skilled soccer-playing and emotion-inducing vulnerability. Based on a character created and brought to life by Jason Sudeikis, the show has seen two very successful seasons launch, with lots of Emmy love, but with Season 3 on the way, how seriously does its cast take soccer?
Jaime Tartt (Phil Dunster) and Dani Rojas (Cristo Fernandez) have been established as the team’s two aces, while Isaac McAdoo (Kola Bokinni) has taken over the coveted captain role for newly retired and now AFC Richmond Coach Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein).
According to an interview with IndieWire, actors who portrayed professional soccer players in “Ted Lasso” had to display their soccer skills during auditions.

The question of who the best real-life soccer player in the "Ted Lasso" cast is a "tricky one to answer," at least according to Brett Goldstein, who stars as Roy Kent in the show.
"You've got [Cristo Fernández], who was a professional," Goldstein tells Popsugar. "You've got Moe Hashim, also a professional. Phil Dunster is very good. They're all very good." Still, at the end of the day, he knows who he'd pick. "Gun to head, if you said you can only play one player, I'd go with Moe Hashim, who is just an all-around f*cking great player. He's a god in the game."
There are a lot of options to choose from, as it turns out that all the players on the show actually do know how to play the sport. "It was vital that all the team really could play football, so it was absolutely part of their audition process,...

A version of this story about “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” first appeared in the Guilds & Critics Awards / Documentaries issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
For the cast of Amazon’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” the road to Middle-earth was not a straight line. For some, like Ismael Cruz Córdova, who plays breakout elven warrior Arondir, it was a road with multiple dead-ends.
After his first rounds of auditions for “an Aragorn-type character,” he was told he was out of the running. “I was like, nope, I’m not taking no for an answer,” Córdova told TheWrap. He fought and got another audition, this time pulling out all the stops by enlisting friends to help with cameras and lighting. Again, he was told no. Again, he fought, and then received a “final email” from the showrunners saying they were going in a different direction.

Struggling to accept her age, her boyfriend’s love and her father’s indifference, Maria spots an opportunity to feel young, free and desirable at her father’s wedding, where she meets Raffy, her new stepbrother. Their obvious, if inconvenient, sexual chemistry is made worse by the news that her father has been diagnosed with a terminal illness.
Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter) will play Maria’s father. Bailey will play Maria’s boyfriend Eddy.

Last Year’s Winner: Dan Levy, “Schitt’s Creek”
Still Eligible: No.
Hot Streak: The category hasn’t seen any repeat winners since Jeremy Piven took home three consecutive trophies for his work on “Entourage” between 2006 – 2008. Shortly thereafter, “Modern Family’s” Emmy dominance was supported by Supporting Actor wins, as Eric Stonestreet won in 2010, then Ty Burrell triumphed in 2011, before it went back to Stonestreet in 2012 and then eventually returned to Burrell in 2014.
Fun Fact: Lately, “Saturday Night Live” has become a bit of a mainstay in the Supporting categories, but it took decades before voters put sketch performers alongside their half-hour comedy peers. Eddie Murphy was the first “SNL” cast member nominated in this category, way back in 1983. It took another 29 years for the next Studio 8H player to snag a nod, when Bill Hader was nominated in 2012. “Saturday Night Live” has received six of its seven nominations in the last eight years,...

Behind the uplifting humor of Apple TV’s hit comedy series “Ted Lasso” — about a London-based soccer team and their optimistic American coach — is a charming ensemble complementing Jason Sudeikis’ star turn as the title character. British casting director Theo Park is the woman partly responsible for that on-screen alchemy.
Sudeikis, one of series co-creators and an executive producer, was the loudest creative voice when it came to building the ensemble, which meant he had final say in every casting decision. His steadfast vision facilitated Park’s search. “It was all about how Jason perceived the roles. All I needed to do was have a quick chat with him about what he wanted and then it was clear,” she told IndieWire from London.
Even if Sudeikis had veto power, the concept lent itself to plenty of exploration, especially considering neither Sudeikis nor the other producers knew many British actors. Park,...

Casting directors wade through hundreds and hundreds of actors sometimes just for one role, and it’s safe to say they’ve seen it all when it comes to thespians trying to stand out from the crowd and land the part. When asked to share some do’s and don’ts for auditioning actors during Gold Derby’s Meet the Btl Experts: TV Casting Directors panel (watch above), Julie Harkin (“I May Destroy You” and “Industry”) had one key one. “Don’t get naked. I’ve had some self-tapes recently with people with their tops off. Don’t do that!” she exclaims.
As for what you should do, “just be natural,” she advises, with which our other panelists Kelly Valentine Hendry (“Bridgerton”), Victoria Thomas (“The Mosquito Coast”), Theo Park (“Ted Lasso”) and Michael V. Nicolo (“Young Rock”) all agreed. “I’m a big champion of being yourself and being who...

Auditioning for a role on “Ted Lasso’s” AFC Richmond squad required not only acting chops but some credible soccer — excuse us, football — skills as well. “They had to be really good actors and play football really well,” casting director Theo Park tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: TV Casting Directors panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). “It was really exciting to see actors who I knew show me their amazing football skills.”
While most of those auditions were self-tapes, Park and her team had the actors kick around a ball in the parking lot for some of the smaller footballer roles. But that idea quickly went out the, uh, window. “One day, one of the girls kicked the ball — she wasn’t as good as she told us she was — and she kicked the ball and smashed the window of the opposite office, which we had to pay for,...

How Bill Lawrence & Casting Director Theo Park Put The ‘Ted Lasso’ Team Together – Crew Call Podcast
Not all actors are former professional athletes or, for that matter, former soccer players.
But discovering some who were, such as Cristo Fernández, who plays the wildly hysterically funny Latin American soccer player Dani Rojas in AppleTV+’s Ted Lasso, was a feat worth screaming “goal” about for series co-creator Bill Lawrence and casting director Theo Park.
“Anybody we cast is going to have shootable football-soccer skills, so that we don’t have to stunt double everybody,” added Lawrence about the types of actors the production was looking for in its first season.
We talk with Lawrence and Park today on Crew Call about assembling the losing English Premier League team, AFC Richmond, which fish-out-water-Kansas native yank coach Ted Lasso, played by Jason Sudeikis, is tasked with overseeing. Unlike other comedy series on streaming and cable networks, which are devoted to casting established character actors and comedic faces, Ted Lasso...
