It was the most emotional Westworld episode of the entire series: "Kiksuya," from director Uta Briesewitz, and writers Carly Wray and Dan Dietz, centered almost entirely on Ghost Nation warrior Akecheta (Zahn McClarnon) on his journey toward consciousness.
But that's the past — and that flower that grew so beautifully in the dark is about to lead the way to one of the HBO drama's darkest acts yet.
Here's our roundup of the past week's coverage of "Kiksuya," as well as a preview of what's ahead in season two's penultimate installment,...

"Kiksuya," focused squarely on Akecheta (Zahn McClarnon) and his journey through the maze, was more than a beautiful hour of Westworld. It was a revelatory one, too. The mythic episode, directed by Uta Briesewitz, and written by Carly Wray and Dan Dietz, not only put the Ghost Nation warrior into firm focus, it also peeled back layers on many of the season's greatest mysteries.
For instance, there's the reveal at the end of the hour that Maeve (Thandie Newton) has been listening in on Akecheta's conversation with her daughter, using the same mesh network the hosts ...

Here’s yet another humble reminder that any speculation in this review is based solely on this episode, as this critic has seen no further than this week’s installment.

“Kiksuya” puts the spotlight on someone whose name you might not have even known until now: Akecheta, played by Zahn McClarnon, the incredible “Fargo” Season 2 alumnus who has been a fringe player until now. As the presumed leader of the Ghost Nation tribe, he’s been a bit of a looming figure of terror.
Episode 8 barely touches on any of the main cast; instead, it follows Akecheta’s life as it began — a peaceful existence with his tribe and his love Kohana (Julie Jones) — and then what it becomes, as Ford’s programmers redesign him as the “strong but silent” type, tasked with rampaging through the Wild West. However, Akecheta remembers his...

While we wait for Hal Hartley's next feature "Ned Rifle"—the finale to the "Henry Fool" trilogy that, according to IMDb, is already completed—the writer/director has another project ready to share. It's titled "My America," and a new trailer has arrived. The project is an interesting one, and quite different from what we'd normally see from Hartley (be sure to check out The Films Of Hal Hartley: A Retrospective). This time around, the filmmaker is exploring the American psyche via twenty-one monologues written by different playwrights (including Neil Labute, Danny Hoch, Dan Dietz and Marcus Gardley) and performed by a variety of actors including Hartley pal, Thomas Jay Ryan. And it's not just talking with rap, song, sad stories, and dramatic entries across the entire effort, and you can get a taste below. Appropriately enough, "My America" will debut on Fandor on July 4th.

Person of Interest, Season 3, Episode 21: “Beta”
Written by Dan Dietz and Sean Hennen
Directed by Frederick E.O. Toye
Airs Tuesdays at 10pm Et on CBS
In every story, there are certain necessary contrivances that, while you wish could be side-stepped, the narrative simply needs to enact. In Lost, for example, the survivors need to leave the Island to realize that they belong there. Even though it’s eye-roll inducing, it’s a direction the story needs to take and is allowed that. The same can be said of “Beta”.
In the case of Person of Interest, its story called for the fact that the very existence of Finch (Michael Emerson) would at some point put the life of his former fiancée Grace Hendricks (Carrie Preston) at risk, despite her not even being aware that he’s still alive. It’s a tired and tried plot element that anyone with...

Directed by Jeff T. Thomas
Written by Dan Dietz
Airs Tuesdays at 10pm Et on CBS
