New York -- Character singer Charles Anthony, who set the record for most appearances at the Metropolitan Opera – 2,928 – during a career that spanned from 1954 to 2010, died Wednesday. He was 82.
Anthony, a tenor, died at his home in Tampa, Fla., from kidney failure following a long illness, Met spokesman Peter Clark said.
"Your talent, demeanor, joy and heart will be missed," mezzo-soprano Susanne Mentzer wrote on Twitter. "What a loss."
Beginning his career at the old Met on Broadway and moving uptown with the company to its new home at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in 1966, Anthony was a "comprimario," or supporting singer.
He shared the stage with the greatest classical artists of several eras, performing in the Met debuts of Marian Anderson, Birgit Nilsson, Jon Vickers, Leontyne Price, Franco Corelli, Joan Sutherland, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Jose Carreras.
"It's no exaggeration to say that Charlie Anthony is the soul of the Metropolitan Opera,...

ABC News drew fire for an upcoming special on President Barack Obama's health care plan after rejecting a Republican request for airtime.
The network will embed its news telecasts with the White House on June 24, including "Good Morning America" originating from the South Lawn, Charles Gibson anchoring "World News" from the Blue Room and a primetime special titled "Questions for the President: Prescription for America," moderated by Charles Gibson and Diane Sawyer.
The special includes the president talking about his health care plan and answering questions from a cross-section of Americans. But the event will not include an official Republican Party response, prompting the Republican National Committee to complain to the network.
"I find it outrageous that ABC would prohibit our Party's opposing thoughts and ideas from this national debate, which affects millions of ABC viewers," wrote Rnc chief of staff Ken McKay in a letter posted on Drudge Report.

The animal escaped from his enclosure and was eventually caught by zookeepers who fired tranquiler darts at him throughout the day, most of which bounced off (more)...
