Here's an update on a feature project we first alerted you to in late 2012, when it successfully completed a Kickstarter campaign, raising over $10,000 for production. It's one of two feature documentaries in the works on the contributions black people have made to science (whether fact or fiction). This one is on science fact; the other, Invisible Universe: A History Of Blackness In Speculative Fiction from director M. Asli Dukan, focuses on science fiction. Since we featured their 2012 Kickstarter campaign, the filmmakers - Jarita C Holbrook, Kelvin Z. Phillips, Carla L. Jackson - have been hard at work,...

NYC screening info on a film we first profiled on the old S&A site in 2011... Written and directed by Guy Hanks/Marvin Miller Screenwriting Fellowship and Jerome Foundation grant recipient, Kelvin Z. Phillips, the film is titled A Swingin' Trio. It's described as a dramedy. Synopsis reads: Homer Garçon is a not yet published, but smarter-than-every-man-in-the-room novelist. Trude Garçon-Moore is his independent, stunningly attractive, star-is-rising-fast, film producing wife. Together, their addition should equal two, but a curious Valentine’s Day dinner alters their arithmetic in life-changing ways. The film stars Timeca M. Seretti (blacktino), Johnny Walter...

"Ready, Set, Fund," is a column about crowdfunding and related fundraising endeavors for Austin and Texas independent film projects.
The Austin Film Festival has announced their first round of conference panels for 2012, and the title that came immediately to my attention was the "Crowdfunding Your Indie Film" panel. The panel of to-be-named filmmakers will discuss how to use modern technology to connect and solicit funding from backers for their film projects.
If I had to speculate what local filmmaker I'd most like to see on this Aff panel, it would be Kat Candler, pictured above on left with Carla L. Jackson and Kelvin Z. Phillips of A Swingin' Trio, at Aff 2011. Candler exceeded her fundraising goals on past projects including Hellion as well as for the Ut Austin student organization Women In Cinema Summer Production and Operations, for which she is the faculty advisor. Incidentally, over half of the film...

Kat Candler (Jumping Off Bridges, Cicadas) is a familiar face in the Austin film community -- whether as a lecturer at The University of Texas at Austin or as seen above mingling along with filmmakers at local screenings and film festivals, such as Carla L. Jackson and Kelvin Z. Phillips of A Swingin' Trio. I met Kat during SXSW Film in 2006, introduced by Lisa McWilliams of Mobile Film School. I was struck by the passion and creativity of both women. Candler was kind enough to give me a screener of her feature Jumping Off Bridges, an emotionally moving story of the impact of a parent's suicide on a young teenager.
Candler's new short film Hellion will premiere at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, with multiple screenings prior to the narrative feature My Best Day. Candler has proved that she works well with young actors, and Hellion is no exception as she...

Austin Film Festival provides great opportunities to meet and mingle with filmmakers, but the most laid-back social event where new friendships are forged and ideas sprout is the annual Hair of the Dog Brunch. It's great to see seasoned veterans of Austin's local film scene such as Kat Candler (Jumping Off Bridges), seen above with with Carla L. Jackson and Kelvin Z. Phillips of A Swingin' Trio -- check out Jenn Brown's interview with Jackson and Phillips and her review of their first feature film.
