It’s a zoo out there. In 1990, the New York Yankees were a disaster; these were not the Derek Jeter years.
With a 67-95 record, 1990 was the first time in 24 years the Bronx Bombers finished in last place in the division, a whopping 21 games behind the rival the Boston Red Sox. It was the team’s worst record since 1912, two years before Babe Ruth even entered Major League Baseball (and eight years before he joined the Yankees). How bad were the 1990 Yankees? They threw a no-hitter and lost.
A new docuseries coming soon to Peacock, “Bronx Zoo ’90: Crime, Chaos, and Baseball,” gives the abysmal season a “The Last Dance” spin, covering both the drama on the field and off. Like what? Well, there was the time when Yankee owner George Steinbrenner paid a notorious gambler to dig up dirt on superstar player Dave Winfield. That gambler is interviewed in...

It doesn’t get any more delightful than the surprising, warm documentary about beloved baseball legend Yogi Berra, It Ain’T Over. Surprising? Yes, as this well-made bio documentary looks back at Yogi’s outstanding baseball career as player, something overshadowed and even forgotten by fans, as he became best known as a lovable pop culture icon and for his “Yogi-isms,” quotable phrases like “it’s deja vu all over again,” “when you come to a fork in the road, take it” and “it ain’t over until it’s over.” Yet Yogi Berra was a baseball player whose record put him among the greats of the game, As actor and baseball fan Billy Crystal put it, Yogi was “the most overlooked superstar in the history of baseball.”
The numbers are impressive, jaw-dropping even, considering what we might think we know about Yogi Berra.

"He was the most overlooked superstar in the history of baseball." "He's just a gentle, kind soul..." Sony Pictures Classics has revealed an official trailer for It Ain't Over, a documentary about the baseball legend Yogi Berra. After initially premiering at the 2022 Nantucket Film Festival last year, it stopped by the Santa Barbara Film Festival earlier this year and will open in May in limited theaters. The documentary film gives "Yogi" Berra his due recapping the illustrious life of a "bad-ball hitting" catcher (for the Yankees), who was also a D-Day veteran, loving husband and father and, yes, product endorser and originator (mostly) of his own brand of proverbs that are now ingrained into everyday life. This features interviews with Billy Crystal, Bob Costas, Vin Scully, Derek Jeter, Joe Torre, Mariano Rivera, Joe Girardi, Ron Guidry, Willie Randolph, Don Mattingly, Tony Kubek, Bobby Richardson, Suzyn Waldman, and Lindsay Berra. It looks good,...

The last two episodes of the new series about the iconic New York Yankee Derek Jeter is now available to stream online. “The Captain” arrived on ESPN+ last month with new episodes airing on a weekly basis.
The docuseries, directed by Randy Wilkins and executive produced by Spike Lee and Mike Tollin, features dozens of intimate interviews with Jeter, alongside those in the athlete’s inner circle, such as his parents Dorothy and Dr. Charles Jeter, his sister Sharlee Jeter and his wife Hannah Jeter. Alex Rodriguez, Daryl Strawberry, Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera, manager Joe Torre and Dave Winfield also make appearances.
Through these conversations, viewers learn more about Jeter’s meteoric rise to success and the particular hurdles Jeter had to jump over as a biracial athlete. One revealing conversation with his family underscores how Jeter had to “work twice as hard” to reach his goals, even while journalists refused to acknowledge these setbacks,...

Deep into the fifth episode of “The Captain,” ESPN’s new docuseries acknowledges the difficulty of cracking its chosen subject. Derek Jeter might’ve been a stellar shortstop, and an iconic Yankees player whose meteoric rise and waning career mirrored his team’s own trajectory as a New York sports dynasty. But he is also, according to both himself and the many frustrated journalists who couldn’t get past his surface, an extremely careful (read: boring) interview.
“That’s by design,” Jeter confirms on camera, letting loose a genuine grin at the admission. He even goes on to say that “there are things I still won’t talk about” here, now, for the supposedly in-depth docuseries about his own life (which premieres July 18 after the Home Run Derby and will run seven episodes in total). That contradiction lies at the heart of Randy Wilkins’ “The Captain,” which can generally only...

A thought experiment: I chant “Der-ek Je-ter!” You say?
If your answer is a Pavlovian series of five claps — “Clap Clap Clapclapclap,” if you will — then chances are good that you’re the target demographic for ESPN’s new seven-part documentary series The Captain.
If your response is a dead-eyed stare, “Yankees suck!” or perhaps something even more profane, The Captain is easily skippable.
Yankees legend Derek Jeter built a career on steady play on the field and inscrutable blandness off of it, and he mostly doesn’t stray from his established brand here. It takes absolutely nothing away from Jeter’s indisputable greatness on the diamond to say that he’s a borderline inert interview or at least to say that over the five hours sent to critics, whatever wall he put up to survive decades in the New York City media spotlight remains in place.

Randy Wilkins connects with Derek Jeter, subject of his seven-part ESPN documentary series, The Captain, on a few levels.
For starters, Wilkins is a lifelong New York Yankees fan, and Jeter was the linchpin of five World Series championships captured by the team between 1996 and 2009. In his filmmaking career, Wilkins also can relate. While he wasn’t a teen-ager like Jeter when he got his big break, getting the chance to tell the story of his hero resulted from a surprise endorsement from Spike Lee, who is an executive producer of the series.
“In June 2020, he called me to check up on me,” Wilkins recalled in an interview. “He asked me who my favorite Yankee was, just out of the blue. I said, ‘Well, Derek Jeter.’ I was very confused as to why he was asking me that. And the next thing he said was, ‘Derek Jeter wants to do...

Randy Wilkins, who directed the upcoming Derek Jeter ESPN Films documentary series “The Captain,” had one word to describe the topic he had to drag out of the stoic Hall-of-Fame shortstop: “Alex.”
New York Yankees fans in attendance at the June 12 Tribeca Festival Q&a following the first episode’s premiere got a kick out of that one. Jeter, who sat calmly on the Bmcc Tribeca Performing Arts Center stage beside Wilkins, perhaps did not. Wilkins, of course, was referring to Alex Rodriguez, an all-time-great Major League Baseball infielder in his own right. Jeter and A-Rod famously did not get along after the Yankees signed Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers star Rodriguez (whom many baseball pundits believed to be the superior shortstop).
Jeter held his literal ground on the left side of the infield: A-Rod switched positions to third base, and what had been an easy friendship forged at All-Star Games was never the same.

I’m a Red Sox fan of three-plus decades.
The context feels necessary before I admit that Sean Mullin’s documentary It Ain’t Over, focusing on Yankee great Lawrence “Yogi” Berra, actually made me a little bit teary by the end of its 98-minute running time.
Does the doc, premiering to what will presumably be an affectionate hometown audience at the Tribeca Film Festival, have flaws of structure and focus? Heavens yes.
But does it play convincingly, even to a specifically Yankees-hostile critic? Indeed, it does.
Mullin’s central thesis is that Yogi Berra has gone from one of the most adored and acclaimed athletes of his generation to a figure whose actual on-field prowess has maybe been lost to time — usurped in part by the pilfering animated bear who shares much of his name, his baseball achievements obscured by his famous...

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick is the latest onetime ally to back away from Donald Trump in the wake of the assault on the U.S. Capitol last week by the president’s supporters.
In a statement obtained by ESPN Monday night, Belichick declined to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Trump. The legendary coach singled out “the tragic events of last week” for his decision, apparently referring to the acts of insurrection by Trump supporters.
Belichick won six Super Bowls with the Patriots after he took over as coach in 2000. He is the NFL’s winningest active head coach and third on the all-time list.
Belichick publicly supported Trump when he ran for office. He was named to the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition in 2018. The team visited Trump at the White House after winning the Super Bowl in 2017. But when it won again...

President Trump has thrown the New York Yankees a curve ball, saying he’s decided not to throw out a first pitch at a game next month.
Trump left the door open on possibly doing it later in the season.
“Because of my strong focus on the China Virus, including scheduled meetings on Vaccines, our economy and much else, I won’t be able to be in New York to throw out the opening pitch for the @Yankees on August 15th. We will make it later in the season!” Trump tweeted.
The President would have thrown the opening pitch when the Boston Red Sox played the Yankees on that date. Yankees legendary reliever Mariano Rivera was at the White House when Trump made the announcement on his plans, which would have been the first time he did so as President.

President Donald Trump said Thursday that plans for a large-scale Republican National Convention are being canceled, an acknowledgement of the flare-up in coronavirus cases in Jacksonville, Fl.
Instead, Trump said that some convention activities will take place in its original locale, Charlotte, Nc, but suggested that there would be virtual “tele-rallies.” He still plans to deliver an acceptance speech but in a “different form,” he said during a White House press briefing.
“We won’t do a big, crowded convention per se,” Trump told reporters on Thursday.
He and the Rnc moved the major events of the convention, including his acceptance speech, to Jacksonville last month after a tiff with the governor of North Carolina, Roy Cooper, a Democrat. Cooper had told the party that they would not be able guarantee that they would be able to hold a large-scale gathering as in past cycles, given the outbreak of the virus.

Hollywood couldn't have written a better fairy-tale ending for Derek Jeter's last game in New York on Thursday night. When the beloved team captain went to bat at the bottom of the ninth against the Baltimore Orioles, the score was tied 5-5, with pinch runner Antoan Richardson on second base. Then Jeter hit a perfect single base to right field, giving Richardson the chance to run home and win the game. The crowd went crazy, and Jeter was embraced by his teammates before being greeted by fellow retired Yankees Mariano Rivera, Tino Martinez, Andy Pettitte and Jorge Posada, and his former manager Joe Torre.

Alex Rodriguez is currently serving a 162-game suspension from Major League Baseball for violating drug policy, but even though he’s 39 years old, he has every intention of making his way back to Yankee Stadium in 2015, if only to collect his more than $20 million per season salary. But though he’s won two Most Valuable Players as a Yankee and helped them win the 2009 World Series, Rodriguez’s infamy will likely prevent him from ever being considered an all-time Yankee.

Metallica is trying to pawn off their greatest hits collection to more sports stars in a new promo for Espn's “SportsCenter.” The 30-second TV spot (above) features the band bumming around the office with nothing to do now that New York Yankees pitcher Mariano Rivera — who famously used 1991 song “Enter Sandman” as his entrance song — has retired. Also read: Napping Yankees Fan Sues Espn for $10 Million “Who's left?” singer James Hetfield asks drummer Lars Ulrich. “John Daly?” Ulrich says, unconvinced. Mariano Rivera's retirement last season didn't just leave the New York Yankees with one less iconic player in pinstripes. It left Metallica with not much to do around Espn headquarters. Or so this funny new SportsCenter promo pretends. In the 30-second spot, James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo of the iconic heavy-metal band try to get another iconic sports figure to use one of their tunes as an entrance song, as Rivera did with "Enter Sandman" for years. "Coach K's not interested in an entrance song, either," laments Lars, referring to Duke men's basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski. And alas, golfer John Daly wasn't into the...

The long-running Espn series has been putting out some pretty buzzworthy commercials over the last few years - even I know this, and I've never actually watched Espn on purpose - and their latest ad sees the members of Metallica fumbling about for a new gig now that Yankees relief pitcher Mariano Rivera (whose entrance song was the group's killer 1991 single "Enter Sandman," evidently) has retired from football. Whoops, I mean baseball. I don't know what I'm doing. Where is up? Where is down? Is punting a sport? Questions. Anyway, this is cute. Kirk Hammett strumming his guitar in a corporate break room? Bob Costas arrived in Sochi, Russia earlier this month for his eighth Olympic Games (winter and summer) in a row as the host of NBC's primetime coverage. But an eye infection he sustained upon arrival has gotten increasingly worse, and Costas is going to take some much-needed rest.
NBC announced on "Today" Tuesday (Feb. 11) that anchor Matt Lauer will take over for Costas, with Costas keeping his usual good spirits: "Reluctantly, I was trying to throw a complete game here, but I think we're going to have to go to the bullpen, and I don't know if you're aware of this or not, but you're Mariano Rivera, at least tonight," Costas tells Lauer live over the phone.
Lauer adds, "I just feel bad for him. He looks forward to these Games for so long and he's the best that's ever done it.If he could be in that seat, he'd be in that seat.

The Major League Baseball All-Star Game has "counted" since 2003, meaning the winning league of the midsummer classic gets home field advantage in the World Series. The American League won the first seven ASGs since the changed started, then the National League won three in a row.
But the Nl streak was snapped Tuesday night (July 16) when the Al won 3-0, aided by shut-out innings at the end of the game by hall-of-fame closers Mariano Rivera and Joe Nathan.
Rivera, 43, has played in 13 All-Star Games in his 19-season career and his retiring after the 2013 season, so when he took the field in the eighth inning, no other all-stars took the field until he had had his moment to come in from the Asg bullpen one last time. He later said the moment was "priceless."

Los Angeles -- There's a scene in "42" in which Jackie Robinson, the first black player in Major League Baseball, endures intolerably cruel racial slurs from the Philadelphia Phillies' manager.
It's early in the 1947 season. Each time the Brooklyn Dodgers' first baseman comes up to bat, manager Ben Chapman emerges from the dugout, stands on the field and taunts him with increasingly personal and vitriolic attacks. It's a visible struggle, but No. 42 maintains his composure before a crowd of thousands.
As a viewer, it's uncomfortable to watch – although as writer-director Brian Helgeland points out, "if anything, the language we have in that scene was cleaned up from what it was."
Such hatred may seem archaic, an ugly episode in our nation's history that we'd rather forget. But remembering Robinson's accomplishments is more important than ever, say people involved with "42" and baseball historians alike. And because he was such an inspiring cultural figure,...
