Hollywood has been obsessed with biopics for what seems like forever, but it's hard not to admit that our current film landscape is reaching critical mass with movies about famous people. I guess when they've run out of recognizable IP, they've gotta center stories about recognizable faces instead. Last year alone we saw "Maestro," "The Iron Claw," "Napoleon," "Ferrari," "Nyad," "Priscilla," and "Big George Forman," not to mention brand movies like "Blackberry," "Tetris," "Air," and "Barbie." And then, of course, there's "Oppenheimer," which not only took home seven Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, but also became the highest-grossing biopic of all time. No shade to our boy Oppy, but it seems like a new film from Antoine Fuqua is coming for that title and the fact it's a movie about the most famous musical performer to ever live certainly gives the project a leg up on the father of the atomic bomb.

Annie, are you okay? You look like you might faint after producer Graham King turned up at CinemaCon to surprise the crowd with a first look at Antoine Fuqua’s Michael Jackson biopic, Michael. Said to be an emotionally intense depiction of the King of Pop, Michael is positioning itself as a Huge event film. JoBlo’s editor-in-chief, Chris Bumbray, is in the crowd and says Michael will surely be controversial.
During his presentation, Graham said he knows everyone has an opinion about Michael Jackson, for good or ill. However, he did change the world of pop music forever, and his controversy made him a fascinating subject for Fuqua’s film. Graham also said Jackson was an enigma, but behind everything was a man with a very complicated, difficult life.
Michael contains 30 songs from Jackson’s legendary catalog. Next, a trailer played for the crowd, showing Jaafar Jackson as the Gloved One.

The upcoming Michael Jackson biopic “Michael” is embracing the Motown sound — announcing key castings including Larenz Tate as Motown Records founder Berry Gordy and Kat Graham as the legendary Diana Ross.
As the film chronicles Jackson’s rise to prominence — first as a member of the Jackson 5, then as a solo artist — the record label will factor in significantly. “Power” franchise star Tate (who coincidentally played “Thriller” producer Quincy Jones in 2004’s “Ray”) takes on the Motown impresario Gordy, who redefined American music by platforming such acts as the Jackson 5, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, the Four Tops, Gladys Knight and the Pips and Diana Ross & the Supremes.
Graham portrays Ross, who, as lead singer of the chart-topping group, was asked to officially introduce the Jackson 5 to the world and remained a lifelong influence on Michael Jackson.

Contains spoilers for Ahsoka S1, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, The Clone Wars, and non-canon Star Wars Legends novels
Galaxy-hopping space-whales’s Mando-verse series Ahsoka hasn’t been afraid to really dig into the nooks and crannies of Star Wars lore, increasingly drawing on both Rebels and The Clone Wars deep cuts as the season progresses. And so, as we collectively try and process the show’s epic fifth chapter, ‘The Shadow Warrior’, it’s important that we take a moment to talk about the two – yes, two – rare Force powers we get to see in this week’s episode.
Are you all swotted up on the sacred Jedi texts (Aka the Canon and Legends novels)? How’s your working knowledge of PlayStation voyages to the galaxy far, far away? If your answer to any of the above is “Eh?”, then fear not. As a wise Master Yoda once said,...

Even their name is cute. Porgs — teensy, tiny, and be-feathered — are the latest creature to enter the sprawling sci-fi “Star Wars” universe, though we can only hope they prove to be as charming as Bb-8, and less like Jar Jar Binks. Inspired by the real-life inhabitants of a crucial location from this year’s upcoming “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” the new animals instantly captured hearts after being introduced with not much in the way of fanfare.
Lovingly created by “The Last Jedi” director Rian Johnson himself, the months since they were first introduced to the Star Wars faithful have only increased demand to know still more about the screaming sea birds and their place in the mythos.

Marvel has released sneak peek of their new Spider-Man animated series. It features a clip of Spidey in the heat of battle with Scorpion. The new series goes back to the origins of Spider-Man as a hero while Peter Parker discovers his powers and begins fighting crime in New York City.
It looks like something the kids will enjoy, but Marvel hasn't really impressed me with any of their animation projects since The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Since then things have just been going downhill, especially the animation quality.

Coming to a close this week is Ultimate Spider-Man, which will air its final episode tomorrow, January 7th. Marvel is pulling the plug on the show to instead focus on a new effort. We don’t know too much about it just yet, but the company is planning a new animated series for Disney Xd, and as the teaser above confirms, it’ll arrive in the summer.
At only 10 seconds long, not much else is revealed in this awfully brief tease, but the confirmation of a release window is certainly exciting and nicely ties the new show in with Spider-Man: Homecoming, which swings into theaters on July 7th and stars Tom Holland, Robert Downey Jr. and Michael Keaton, among others.

According to We Got This Covered, tie-in merchandising has revealed that Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen and Venom will be featured in Disney Xd's upcoming new Spider-Man cartoon. The new show has been confirmed to follow Peter Parker, but it looks as if Miles and a spider-powered Gwen Stacy will play prominent roles. Venom's role in the show is even more of a mystery. Will he be a villain or a reluctant anti-hero? Kevin Shinick (Robot Chicken) and Philip Pignotti (Avengers Assemble) are serving as executive producers on the show. With Miles Morales featuring prominently in Marvel's comic line, and Sony's animated featuring focusing on the character, how long will it be before the character turns up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?...

Earlier this year, we learned that Disney Xd had decided to cancel the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series in order to focus on a new Spider-Man show which would be headed up by the team of story editor Kevin Shinick (Robot Chicken) and supervising director Philip Pignotti (Avengers Assemble).
The plan apparently is to focus on the “insecure yet courageous teenager Peter Parker as he learns that with great power comes great responsibility – especially when you get the strange abilities of a spider.” So, classic Spider-Man then, but some new merchandise has now surfaced which points to both Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen playing a role here. While that shouldn’t be taken as confirmation that we’ll see either of those characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s interesting that Marvel is choosing to put the spotlight on them.

While that shouldn’t be taken as confirmation that we’ll see either of those characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s interesting that Marvel is choosing to put the spotlight on them.

Over the weekend, Marvel announced that they are developing a new Spider-Man animated series for Disney Xd. The series will simply be called Marvel's Spider-Man, and it's set to drop sometime in 2017. It will tell the story of "an unsure but courageous teen who has to figure out how to be a superhero from the very beginning."
The new series will replace the animated series Ultimate Spider-Man, which is set to conclude in January 2017 in a two-part finale titled "Graduation Day." That story arc will see "Spider-Man stop Doctor Octopus and the Superior Sinister Six from destroying all of the heroes in New York City."
The news of the new series came from Cort Lane, the senior vice president of Marvel Animation and Family Entertainment at Nycc, and this is what he said about it in a statement:

USA Today reveals that a new Spider-Man animated TV series is on the way which will take Peter Parker back to high school (again) to tell some fresh new stories featuring the wall-crawler. The current Disney Xd series is Ultimate Spider-Man, but that will wrap up in January after four seasons with a two-part "Graduation Day" featuring the wall-crawler battling Doctor Octopus and the Superior Sinister Six. This new take is being headed up by story editor Kevin Shinick (Robot Chicken) and supervising director Philip Pignotti (Avengers Assemble), and it will apparently focus on, "insecure yet courageous teenager Peter Parker as he learns that with great power comes great responsibility — especially when you get the strange abilities of a spider." Honestly, that doesn't sound too different to the character's current series, but chances are this one is going to ditch the goofy comedy and Family Guy style cutaways. Marc Buhaj,...

Comic-Con 2015: Exclusive Interview with Scooby-doo! And Kiss: Rock And Roll Mystery’s Kevin Shinick
Generations of TV viewers have watched Scooby-Doo and the gang solve many a mystery with a wide variety of guests ranging from the Harlem Globetrotters to the Addams family, but they team up with a legendary rock band in Scooby-Doo! & Kiss: Rock & Roll Mystery, which is now available on Digital HD and comes out on Blu-ray and DVD July 21st from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. At Comic-Con, Daily Dead caught up with Scooby-Doo! & Kiss: Rock & Roll Mystery screenwriter Kevin Shinick.
When did your love for Scooby-Doo begin?
Kevin Shinick: I can't pinpoint where it started, because my interest in it has been around for so long, and it's the same thing with Kiss. I remember being in elementary school and loving Kiss and loving Scooby-Doo. Subconsciously I've been working on this screenplay for decades and now I've finally had a chance to put it down onto paper.
That was a staple.

Team Unicorn
Jane Lynch, Alan Tudyk, Tara Strong and Kevin Shinick will provide the voices for Adult Swim's live-action/animated hybrid pilot "Team Unicorn". The four will play Team Unicorn and their cartoon counterparts.
From the creators of "Robot Chicken," this modern satire of Saturday morning kids' shows follows four mythical unicorn heroines who masquerade as culture-obsessed human girls. The show presents darkly ironic twists on 1980s cartoon tropes. [Source: The Live Feed]
Hello, My Name Is Doris
Sally Field will join Max Greenfield, Jack Antonoff and Beth Behrs in Michael Showalter's indie comedy "Hello, My Name Is Doris".
Field will play an isolated sixty-year old woman who is motivated by a self-help seminar to romantically pursue a younger coworker. This causes her to stumble into the spotlight of the local hipster social scene. [Source: Deadline]

If you're a "Game of Thrones" fan, the new season of "Robot Chicken" is appealing directly to you. During a press event for "DC Comics Special II: Villains in Paradise," executive producers John Harvatine and Eric Towner, as well as writer-director Kevin Shinick, spoke to Zap2it about the upcoming Season 7 treat.
"We've got George R.R. Martin playing himself," Towner says. "He came to the studio and recorded himself, so there's some 'Game of Thrones' stuff. That's pretty exciting."
Martin isn't the only notable celebrity appearing, though. Shinick goes on to share, "We've got a 'Les Miserables' parody that's got Zachary Levi." In fact, Shinick, who has several broadway credits on his resume, will also sing in the parody.
"Robot Chicken" Season 7 kicks off April 6 on Cartoon Network with "DC Comics Special II: Villains in Paradise." It has quite the packed roster itself, including Alfred Molina returning as Lex Luthor.

To celebrate its 100th episode, Mad is getting "Super"-sized. The animated sketch-comedy series features a parody of the Superman blockbuster Man of Steel in Monday's double-sized show (Nov. 11 at 8:30/7:30c on Cartoon Network). Producer Kevin Shinick recruited Weird Al Yankovic and Henry Winkler to voice Superman and his father, Jor-El, respectively in the sketch, which takes a playful jab at the film's controversial violence.
The network gave Shinick 22-minutes to play with — twice the Emmy-nominated show's typical episode length — and he's stuffed it with a variety of pop-culture parodies and comedy bits. The featured musical sketch, "The Worst Show Ever," is inspired by a certain boy band. "It's One Direction's take on having to watch Mad," Shinick says, emphasizing his series' self-deprecating attitude. Yankovic will voice the band's manager.

There are times one wonders what synergies truly exist between parent company Warner Bros and DC Entertainment. Normally, the studio cherry-picks properties it wants from its subsidiary and rarely does DC get something in return. However, as the company planned its mammoth villain-centric fall publishing plans, they managed to corral the studio into helping create and market the just released Necessary Evil: Super-Villains of DC Comics. The 99-minute documentary features sound and fury but its significance is obscured.
Watching it, I kept wondering who this was being marketed to since casual fans of the movies, television shows, or video games lack the context to comprehend much of what the host of talking heads had to say. Even current readers of the New 52 might be confused by the various iterations of the villains as they have appeared through the years.

Carnage events aren’t for everyone, because Carnage isn’t a character for everyone. There are those that love “Red Venom” and those that consider him nothing more than a remnant of 90′s comic trends. In a world where it seems like every villain has a motivation, or justification that can have them be viewed in a somewhat sympathetic light, sometimes you just need a straight up sociopath to challenge the good guys. Strip away tragic backstories, never establish any real sort of pathos, just a despicable human being who has been granted super powers because of an alien symbiote. That’s what Carnage is. Now, some might try to point to Marvel’s intentions to bring in a villain (Kasady) to rival the Joker of DC, but 1992 was a long time ago and Carnage will come up short in that argument every time.
