Variety reports that Lions Gate Entertainment has acquired the North American distribution rights to Ken Loach's newest film, Sweet Sixteen, which won the screenplay award at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival and will make its North American premiere at Toronto Intl. Film Festival in September. Sweet Sixteen follows the exploits of a Scottish teenager from a tough background who, determined to have a normal family life after his mother gets out of prison, sets out to raise the money for a home. Directed by Loach from a screenplay by Paul Laverty, the film stars newcomer Martin Compston, William Ruane, Annmarie Fulton and Michelle Abercromby.

NEW YORK -- Lions Gate Films has gobbled up all North American rights to Ken Loach's "Sweet Sixteen," with plans to roll out the film in the spring. "Sweet" will make its North American premiere in Masters section at next month's upcoming Toronto International Film Festival. The film -- a companion piece to the British director's 1998 Cannes entry "My Name Is Joe" -- won the screenplay award for Paul Laverty at this year's Festival de Cannes and centers on a boy who dreams of rescuing his mother from the slums of Glasgow, Scotland. "Sweet" stars newcomer Liam Compston, William Ruane, Annmarie Fulton and Michelle Abercromby and was produced by Rebecca O'Brien.
