By the time "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3" hit theaters this year, a whole lot had happened between the popular franchise's second installment and its third. On screen, Nick (Louis Mandylor) got separated, Maria (Lainie Kazan) developed dementia, and Ian (John Corbett) retired. Offscreen, Andrea Martin gained new stardom playing demon-hunting nun Sister Andrea in the Paramount+ series "Evil," while the cast also lost one co-star -- Michael Constantine, who passed away in 2021.
The new movie's plot hinges around the aftermath of patriarch Gus' (Constantine) death, as Toula (Nia Vardalos) explains in the film's trailer that it was Gus' last wish that the family visit his childhood village in Greece. Thus, instead of a wedding, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3" actually centers around a family reunion with all the cultural flair you'd expect from the Portokalos family. If you missed the movie in theaters, you won't have to...

Writer/director Nia Vardalos stars as “Toula” in My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, a Focus Features release. Courtesy of Focus Features In the first two My Big Fat Greek Wedding films, Nia Vardalos wore a lot of hats — she starred in the films, but she also wrote them and was an executive producer, too. With My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, she added yet another responsibility: directing. As Vardalos told us, it’s something that had been considered for the second movie, but she said she’s glad she waited until the third.(Click on the media bar below to hear Nia Vardalos) https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Nia_-Vardalos_Diecting_My-Big_Fat_greek_Wedding_3_.mp3 My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 is now playing in theaters

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
There are some Cinderella stories in the history of the box office. We can look at something like the ultra-low-budget "Skinamarink" earlier this year, which made more than $2 million after it became a genuine viral conversation starter online. Produced for just $15,000, it's a nice little success story for director Kyle Edward Ball. Such things happen from time to time in defiance of the industry norms. But the biggest Cinderella story of all time, in every sense, happened in 2002 when "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" had a run for the ages on its way to becoming the biggest rom-com ever. Take that, "Runaway Bride."
Even for those who have absolutely no interest in this particular genre, the journey of this movie is unquestionably fascinating.

Nia Vardalos is back as Toula, the Greek bride from the classic first film and now the middle aged Mom of college daughter Paris (Elena Kampouris) and wife of Ian (John Corbett). The dying wish of Toula’s father is that she take his journal about his hometown Greek village and deliver it back to his childhood friends. When the gang take the trip to the village, with Aunt Voula (Andrea Martin) and Aunt Frieda (Maria Vacratsis), as well as brother Nick (Louis Mandylor), it’s not what they expect, since the village seems to only be populated by a wacky mayor named Victory (Melinda Kotse-lou) and a scary...

Did we need a My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3? Somebody thought so. Sure, the first one was charming, a word-of-mouth surprise hit romantic comedy, with both laughs and love in a big, close Greek-American family, when a young woman, Toula Portokalos (Nia Vardalos), upends family expectations by marrying a non-Greek man, Ian Miller (John Corbett). There has already been one sequel, and despite the sequels’ titles, Toula is not getting married again, as she is still married to that first non-Greek guy from the original movie. After 21 years since this larger-than-life franchise first hit our screens, writer and leading lady Nia Vardalos revisits this world once again in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3”. Arguably, seeing a 3 in a film’s title (other than Toy Story 3…) might encourage an eyeroll – especially considering the state of the industry right now, but there is an inescapable warmth with this comedy franchise.
In the third installment of this series, you are immediately transported to a beautiful Greek setting that is dripping in history and vivid hues. It feels as though you can inhale the pure air and experience the soothing tingle of the sun on your skin, providing a sense of release, as the Portokalos family departs from their hectic city lifestyle.
The narrative continues to revolve around married couple Toula Portokalos, (Vardalos) and Ian Miller who, as we know, have learned to embrace their cultural differences and merge them becoming one big,...

Ever been invited to a family reunion you had no desire to attend? You may be tired of seeing your relatives and listening to their familiar routines, which can be downright annoying at times. But then you force yourself to go and you find that you have a good time after all, at least for a little while.
That’s roughly the experience of seeing My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, the latest chapter in the saga of the eccentric Portokalas family previously seen in the wildly popular 2002 original and its much less successful 2016 sequel (the less said about the short-lived 2003 sitcom spin-off My Big Fat Greek Life, the better). If you enjoyed spending time with Nia Vardalos’ Toula and the rest of her extended clan, you’ll probably have a good time again, even if the characters and jokes are wearing thin with repetition.

More than twenty years ago, Nia Vardalos’s independent romantic comedy “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” — a Cinderella story of a burdened and awkward woman Toula (Vardalos) falling in love with a non-Greek man at the dismay of her extended Greek family — smashed box office record after box office record, grossing more than seventy times its budget worldwide. Vardalos was nominated for a Best Original Screenplay Oscar, and the film inspired both a spin-off television show and a less-than sequel in 2016. Now, Vardalos is back, with her fictional Portokalos family behind her, for a third entry in the series. Does the franchise still have the magic and charm of its original?
Well, a little vacation never hurt anyone, or at least not seriously, and once the Portokalos family arrives in their native Greece, you’re left wondering why they’ve been trying, for so many years, to fix all their problems with weddings.

“Give me a word, any word,” Michael Constantine’s Gus Portokalos implored to anyone who would listen in 2002’s My Big Fat Greek Wedding, “and I’ll show you how the root of that word is Greek.” The old man’s words recur early on in My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, spoken not by the Portokalos patriarch (Constantine himself died in 2021), but by his grieving daughter, Toula (Nia Vardalos), reminding her own daughter, Paris (Elena Kampouris), of Gus’s grinning legacy and the gaping hole he’s left behind.
Toula is doing her father’s voice and smiling when she delivers that tribute, but there are tears in her eyes too. The laughs here, for both characters and audiences, tend to echo through the gauze of nostalgia, making the film an unexpectedly moving entry in the franchise, if not an uproariously funny one. It’s certainly the most successful sequel,...

Back in 2002, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” introduced mainstream audiences to all the heartwarming moments, overbearing relatives, and downright craziness of coming from a large Greek-American family. Somehow, Nia Vardalos’ breakout rom-com spurred a two-decade-long trilogy; sadly, the third installment relies too heavily on its stunning Corfu scenery instead of an actual plot.
This is Vardalos’ first time in the director’s chair for the trilogy that she penned; “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” is also Vardalos’ sophomore directorial effort overall. It shows. Jokes fall flat while attempts at seriousness are downright hilarious in their off-tone delivery.

Nia Vardalos wanted to tackle political themes in 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3'.The 60-year-old actress has written and directed the new romantic comedy, in which she reprises the role of Toula Portokalos, and did not shy away from the topic of immigration.Nia told Parade magazine: "This is the most political movie I've ever written."I said, 'I'm going to write about this in a way that people will understand we are all humans.' And it's unfair that people are forced from their homes, pushed out by famine or war or loss of income, and pushed into a society that is not necessarily welcoming them."So I wrote about it in the new movie, interwoven as part of a giant braid of the bigger story. Nobody wants to be preached to, but we're all immigrants, and that's my message. That's the theme of the third movie."Nia...

As has become standard in recent years, our annual fall and winter film preview comes with something of an asterisk: it’s (another!) unpredictable time for movies, right down to when we might even expect to see them. With both the WGA and SAG-afra strikes still winding on, everything from production to promotion has been disrupted for many new features, and the entire calendar remains in flux.
And yet, even with those very valid concerns in place, the next three months at the multiplex (and beyond) offer a bounty of exciting new films. We’re talking new films from Martin Scorsese, Pablo Larraín, Sofia Coppola, Todd Haynes, Emerald Fennell, David Fincher, Jonathan Glazer, Taika Waititi, Justine Triet, Wes Anderson, and Yorgos Lanthimos. Jeff Nichols is back, as is Godfrey Reggio and the juicy stars of “Chicken Run.” Festival faves like Christos Nikou, Kristoffer Borgli, and Chloe Domont make a play for further dominance.

The Portokalos family is headed back to Greece! A third My Big Fat Greek Wedding movie is on the way, and this time it will follow Toula (Nia Vardalos) as she brings her entire family back to her late father Gus's (Michael Constantine) childhood village to reconnect with their roots.
The first "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" movie premiered in 2002, and focuses on 30-year-old Toula as she prepares to marry the very non-Greek Ian (John Corbett) in a lavish Grecian ceremony. The 2016 sequel follows Toula and Ian as they navigate family life with their defiant daughter (Elena Kampouris). Vardalos penned each of the films in addition to starring in them, but "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3" marks the first time she's also serving as the director.
Apparently "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3" was actually ready to go a few years ago, but was delayed by the pandemic.

It’s a big fat Greek reunion with third entry in the My Big Fat Greek Wedding franchise. The official My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 trailer reveals Fotoula ‘Toula’ Portokalos (writer/director/actor Nia Vardalos) is keeping a promise to her late father to take the family back home and locate his old friends.
Among those reprising their roles are John Corbett as Ian Miller, Elena Kampouris as Paris Miller, Gia Carides as Nikki, Joey Fatone as Angelo, Louis Mandylor as Nick Portokalos, Lainie Kazan as Maria Portokalos, and Andrea Martin as Thiea Voula. Sadly, Michael Constantine, who played family patriarch Gus Portokalos in the first two films, passed away in August 2021.
Rita Wilson, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman return as producers. Paul Brooks, Scott Niemeyer, and Steven Shareshian serve as executive producers.

"My Big Fat Greek Wedding" was the true definition of a sleeper hit: a quirky romantic comedy that came out of nowhere to crack the top 10 at the 2002 box office and readily outgross the likes of "Minority Report," "Chicago," and "The Bourne Identity." (Just gonna let that sink in for a moment.) Now, 21 years later, Nia Vardalos' rom-com is giving rise to a trilogy with "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3" -- a sequel that, contrary to its title, may not actually involve a wedding at all.

The Portokalos family is coming together once again for “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” but this time, they’re getting back to their roots.
In the first trailer for the threequel, we learn that the patriarch of the family, Gus, has passed away — the actor who played him, Michael Constantine, died in 2021 — and his dying wish was for his family to venture to the village in Greece that he grew up in. Yes, the whole family.
Naturally, chaos ensues, beginning with Aunt Voula (Andrea Martin) happily doling out souvlaki to everyone on the plane, and Paris (Elena Kampouris) running into a handsome man named Aristotle who she apparently ghosted.

The Portokalos family is taking their Big Fat Greek life to the homeland in the official trailer for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3.
The two-and-a-half-minute look at the third installment of the romantic comedy franchise opens on Nia Vardalos’ Toula catching audiences up, explaining that a lot has happened since her wedding in the first film to John Corbett’s Ian.
“My father passed away, and his last wish was for us to visit his childhood village and reconnect with our roots, so we’re having a reunion,” Toula says. “And by we, I mean the whole family.”
The trailer footage also sees the lead character begin to take her place as the new “head of the family,” according to her brother, Nick (Louis Mandylor). The third film marks the first one in the franchise without the late Michael Constantine, who played Portokalos family patriarch Costas.

Universal’s Focus Features offered theater owners a first look at Alexander Payne’s New England prep school comedy The Holdovers, Ethan Coen’s Drive-Away Dolls and the last installment of My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, giving some love, naturally, to Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, set to bow in Cannes.
“Wes Anderson cannot make a movie that is not magic,” said Focus distribution chief Lisa Bunnell at CinemaCon, calling the helmer’s fare “the Marvel of specialty movies.”

Prior to this third installment, the 2016 sequel "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2" saw writer and star Nia Vardalos and costar John Corbett's characters navigating their marriage and family life.

If one were to apply the "Predator" handshake meme to Nia Vardalos and James Cameron, their clasped hands should probably be labeled, "Making incredibly long-legged hits at the box office." Cameron, mind you, has done this a tad more often than Vardalos has at this stage in their respective careers, but the mere fact that I was even able to write that sentence with a straight face is a testament to just how massive a sleeper success "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" was upon its release in 2002. To this day, it remains the second-highest-grossing film to never hit the top spot at the U.S. box office during its theatrical run.

Rarovideo is back, with an excellent Italo war drama that finds humanist values in an appalling situation: a young Italian lieutenant is tasked with distributing 12 Athenian prostitutes to garrisons on the road back to Italy, to ‘service’ the troops. It’s a mixed group — a couple of the women have signed up to avoid starvation. The trek takes them directly into partisan conflict. Sympathetic director Valerio Zurlini assembles a terrific international cast: Mario Adorf, Anna Karina, Tomas Milian, Marie Laforêt, Lea Massari, Valeria Moriconi and Milena Dravic.

Nia Vardalos has announced that production has begun in Athens, Greece, on “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3,” the second sequel to her hit 2002 family comedy.
But Vardalos also announced a director for the film — confirming that she will in fact be behind the director’s chair for the third installment in the franchise. It will make the film only her second outing as a director and her first in over a decade since directing 2009’s “I Hate Valentine’s Day.”
“Thank you to Playtone, Gold Circle, HBO and Focus! And much love and gratitude to you all for your support as we waited to film. Greece baby. Greece!,” she also added in a caption on Instagram along with a brief video message announcing the film.
Vardalos did not disclose whether any cast from the prior two films would be returning for the sequel, nor did she reveal any plot details.
