In the end, was Spotify’s acquisition of Gimlet and Parcast all a waste?
That’s how unionized staffers at Gimlet and Parcast described Spotify’s decision on Monday to begin shuttering the two podcast studios that the audio giant had purchased in 2019 for 221 million euros. “When Spotify purchased Gimlet and Parcast for nearly $300 million, they acquired an incredible group of talented people with specific and marketable skills. Then, they wasted that opportunity: canceling shows with dedicated audiences, leaving half-finished projects to die on the vine, and giving teams little direction as to what they actually wanted to see produced,” the Gimlet and Parcast unions said. “Gimlet and Parcast were studios with vision that helped shape our industry. Whether Spotify Studios has a vision remains to be seen.”
Four years after their acquisitions, Gimlet and Parcast will sunset this summer as they combine to make Spotify Studios, an in-house studio division led by Julie McNamara.

San Francisco, June 5 (Ians) Music streaming platform Spotify on Monday announced it was sacking 200 employees, 2 per cent of its workforce, from its podcast division as part of a corporate reorganisation.
Sahar Elhabashi, Spotify’s head of podcast division, announced that the company is expanding partnership efforts with leading podcasters from across the globe with a tailored approach optimised for each show and creator.
“However, doing so requires adapting; over the past few months, our senior leadership team has worked closely with Hr to determine the optimal organisation for this next chapter,” said Elhabashi.
Those impacted in layoffs received emails from Hr. The company said it will support these individuals with “generous severance packages, including extended healthcare coverage and immediate access to outplacement support”.

Music streaming giant Spotify is making a new round of cuts to its podcast division following a broad round of layoffs in January and job cuts in October.

Max Cutler — the executive who oversees Spotify’s exclusive deals with top creators like Joe Rogan, Call Her Daddy‘s Alex Cooper and Emma Chamberlain — will leave the company in May, a Spotify spokesperson confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.
Cutler’s exit comes shortly after Spotify announced a reorganization on Jan. 23 that led to the departure of Dawn Ostroff, Spotify’s chief content and ad business officer, and the promotions of Alex Norström and Gustav Söderström to the co-president positions.
With Cutler’s pending departure, Julie McNamara will now take over leadership of Spotify’s exclusive licensing deals with creators like Rogan, Cooper and Chamberlain in addition to continuing to lead original content and major studio partnerships. Bryan Thoensen, who joined Spotify late last year from TikTok and initially reported up to Cutler, will oversee content partnerships with third-party creators. Over the past few months, we’ve seen an increasing number of streaming companies remove original content from their services. Deadline reports that Paramount+ is the latest service to remove titles from their platform, which includes Jordan Peele’s reboot of The Twilight Zone.
In addition to The Twilight Zone, Paramount+ has also removed Peter Sarsgaard’s Interrogation, Michael Chiklis’ Coyote, comedy series No Activity, Kate Beckinsale’s Guilty Party, animated series The Harper House, and reality series The Real World: Homecoming.
Jordan Peele’s reboot of The Twilight Zone launched in 2019 on CBS All Access and aired for two seasons because it was cancelled just before the service rebranded to Paramount+. “Jordan Peele, Simon Kinberg, and the entire production team truly reimagined The Twilight Zone for the modern age,” read a statement from Paramount+ Head of Programming Julie McNamara regarding the cancellation of the series. “They upheld the classic...

On Jan. 23, as Spotify staff learned of plans to lay off 6 percent of the company, or about 600 people, top podcast executives at the audio giant went into damage-control mode. Most notable among the departures was Dawn Ostroff, the chief content and advertising business officer who was hired in 2018 to build out Spotify’s podcasting ambitions and, as one top dealmaker describes it, “represented Hollywood and talent from a creative perspective” for the Sweden-based company. With Ostroff set to exit and hand over leadership of content to Alex Nörstrom, a business executive who oversaw Spotify’s freemium model, the podcast execs quickly scheduled calls with outside partners, agents and managers to reassure them of Spotify’s commitment to existing deals.
Ostroff’s departure was a surprise to some observers, given that the executive was one of Spotify’s most public-facing leaders, spearheading key presentations to investors, participating in media interviews to...

Meghan Markle unveiled the first episode of her new Spotify podcast Archetypes, welcoming debut guest Serena Williams and promising a series “where we dissect, explore, and subvert the labels that try to hold women back.”
Today’s debut episode arrives nearly two years after Markle and husband Prince Harry, under their Archewell Audio banner, signed an exclusive multiyear deal with Spotify. Next week’s episode will feature an interview with Mariah Carey.
Also featured in today’s episode is Dr. Laura Cray, a Uc Berkeley professor and expert on gender in the workplace.
During the Williams conversation, Prince Harry drops by, apparently unexpected. “You wanna come say hi?,” Markle asks. “Look who just popped in.”
Other notable moments include Markle and Williams reflecting on embracing ambition from a young age, the struggles they felt as new mothers with careers in the public eye, and Williams discussing her decision to pivot...

Spotify brought in “close to” €200 million, or roughly 215 million, in podcast revenue last year, according to Dawn Ostroff, the company’s chief content and advertising business officer.
Speaking at Spotify’s investor day presentation in New York on Wednesday, Ostroff noted that the company — which has spent 1 billion for its podcast expansion — is still in “investment mode” but expects podcasts to be a “20 billion opportunity.”
“Our bet in this space is already starting to pay off, beginning with improvements in ad products and, in turn, monetization,” Ostroff said.
But it may take a few more years before Spotify sees a profit from its podcast bet. Spotify’s chief financial officer, Paul Vogel, noted that podcasting had a €103 million negative impact (about 110 million based on current conversion rates) on gross profit and is expected to remain negative this year.

Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex is to host a podcast series about the common stereotypes that have historically generalized women as the first project from her and Prince Harry’s Archewell Audio after striking a multi-million dollar deal with Spotify.
The audio streaming service has set Archetypes to launch later this year.
The series will see Meghan Markle investigate the labels that try to hold women back. She will speak with historians and experts to uncover the origin of these stereotypes and have uncensored conversations with women who know all too well how these typecasts shape narratives.
It comes after Spotify was quick to dampen tabloid speculation that it was growing frustrated by the fact that only one episode of a podcast has so far emerged from the royal deal since it was announced in December 2020.

Paramount Plus is currently the home of five different “Star Trek” Universe TV series — “Discovery,” “Picard,” “Strange New Worlds,” “Prodigy” and “Lower Decks” — but its programming chiefs don’t believe the streamer has hit that Peak Trek threshold yet, with its Michelle Yeoh-led “Section 31” in the works and potentially other projects.
“Yes, we are still in development on ‘Section 31,’ so there will be more news on that soon,” Nicole Clemens, president of original scripted series at Paramount Plus, told reporters during an executive session alongside chief programming officer Tanya Giles at the Television Critics Association’s press tour Tuesday. “And two, the question about ‘critical mass’ on ‘Star Trek,’ I think we have some fantastic offerings in our always on slate,” in reference to “Star Trek” shows lined up back-to-back on the Paramount Plus rollout schedule.
Clemens added: “And I think you may see a few more very curated additions coming.

Spotify has shuttered its in-house podcast studio and laid off several staffers affiliated with the division.
The studio, dubbed Studio 4 inside the company and referenced externally as Spotify Studios, was behind shows like Amy Schumer Presents: 3 Girls 1 Keith, Dissect, and Chapo: Kingpin on Trial. It comprised roughly 10 to 15 employees, some of whom have been reassigned, according to The Verge. Those who were let go – including studio head Gina Delvac – will receive two months of severance.
In a statement, Spotify’s head of U.S. studios and videos Julie McNamara told The Verge that the move enables Spotify to “move faster and make more significant progress and facilitate more effective collaboration across our organization.”

While Spotify has risen to become a podcasting power, particularly through acquisitions of production companies like Gimlet Media, Parcast and The Ringer, it has decided to shut down its own in-house studio.
Known internally as Studio 4, because it was the fourth studio in the company’s portfolio, the entity officially called Spotify Studios has told employees their last day will be January 21. The news was first reported by The Verge. A Spotify rep contacted by Deadline declined to comment.
Studio 4 had about a dozen staffers and made shows like Dissect and Chapo: Kingpin on Trial. Most employees were given two months’ severance pay and invited to apply to open positions at the Stockholm, Sweden-based tech firm, and some were reassigned to other Spotify roles. Paramount+’s planned revival of Criminal Minds may not come to pass after all, according to the series’ longtime star, Paget Brewster.
The actress addressed the matter on Thursday via Twitter, when a follower named Jennifer asked her, “Any news on the #CriminalMIndsrevival?”
“No, and sadly, we think it’s dead,” Brewster responded. “I’ll let you know if there is any progress but it seems unlikely. Which is a bummer.”
Paramount+ unveiled its plans to reinvigorate the Criminal Minds franchise on February 24.
The scripted revival was reportedly going to investigate a single case over the course of 10 episodes. Criminal Minds executive producer/showrunner Erica Messer was expected to lead its creative team.
The reboot of the police procedural was to be accompanied by The Real Criminal Minds, a true-crime docuseries, which would feature a former real FBI profiler.

Fans of The Good Fight can breathe a sigh of relief.
Cush Jumbo (Lucca) and Delroy Lindo (Adrian) will return to the Paramount+ legal drama to close out their storylines.
TV Line first reported the news, which comes several months after the stunning announcement that both stars are bowing out of the series.
The Good Fight Season 4's plans for closure for the characters were scuppered because the series was forced to shut down several months early due to Covid-19.
It meant that fans were left with various storylines dangling and many questions about what became of the two exciting characters.

“We adore the actors and their characters, and are delighted to give the audience a chance to say a proper goodbye.

Update 2/25: Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw and Simon Kinberg’s Genre Films have issued a statement about the end of The Twilight Zone series.
We greatly enjoyed our time working on The Twilight Zone — particularly when the real world around us often felt more and more like another dimension. “Paramount+ will be the leader in live sports,” CBS Entertainment Group boss George Cheeks said today in a major streaming war throw down to the likes of Olympics and Premier League home Peacock.
Coming partway through a delayed, glitchy and often repetitive corporate presentation of the March 4 launching ViacomCBS platform, Cheeks promised a plethora of sports programming from the NFL, international soccer and more.
“Bottom line everything sports fans love on CBS …all of this will be available on Paramount+,” Cheeks declared after an intro from RuPaul. For most Stateside sports fans, the big ticket is the NFL, which is in pricey play as the TV renewal rights are on the table heading towards next month.
A reality the CBS exec acknowledged in what was perhaps a case of some public negotiating.

The animated “Star Trek: Prodigy” will premiere on Paramount+ before it airs on Nickelodeon, ViacomCBS announced Wednesday.
The move comes as ViacomCBS looks to unite its “Star Trek” franchise on the streaming service. “Prodigy” will join the flagship series “Star Trek: Discovery” and “Star Trek: Picard,” which saw Patrick Stewart make his long-awaited return to the franchise last year. Paramount+ also hosts the animated “Lower Decks” series and the upcoming “Strange New Worlds.”
No premiere date for “Prodigy” has been announced, though the series is expected to debut sometime this year. Watch a promo for the entire “Star Trek: Universe” below.
“Prodigy,” from creators Kevin and Dan Hageman, centers on six young outcasts who know nothing about the ship they have commandeered — a first in the history of the “Star Trek” franchise — but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents.

There is going to be even more Star Trek on Paramount+ than initially anticipated.
The March 4-launching ViacomCBS streamer revealed today that Star Trek: Prodigy now will be making its premiere on the platform later this year. Originally, as Deadline reported exclusively last summer, the kids orientated CG-animated series was set for Nickelodeon.
And Prodigy still is, kind of.
Dropping a first look today too (see above), the 20-episode first season of the series created by Kevin and Dan Hageman will have a second window on the cable channel following its Paramount+ premiere. Neither debut dates for the first ever Star Trek series for children in the franchise’s long history were announced on Wednesday at the Paramount+ investors day presentation.

The “Star Trek” Universe is making its permanent home on Paramount Plus, including the premiere of the latest “Trek” iteration, the animated kids series “Star Trek: Prodigy,” ViacomCBS announced during its Investors Day presentation on Wednesday.
Originally conceived for Nickelodeon, “Prodigy,” from Kevin and Dan Hageman (Netflix’s “Trollhunters”), will now premiere on the streamer later in 2021. After its 10-episode run has concluded there, the show — about a coterie of alien kids who commander a seemingly abandoned Starfleet vessel — will air again on the linear Nickelodeon channel. The network also released a first look at the bridge crew from the show, highlighting that none of the main characters on “Prodigy” will be human, a first for a “Trek” series.
The move is part of a wider official strategy of placing every current and former “Trek” TV series on Paramount Plus, including new seasons of “Star Trek: Discovery” and “Star Trek: Lower Decks...

CBS All Access will not move forward with a second season of the experimental police drama “Interrogation,” the streaming service said Wednesday.
The 10-episode series centered on a case in which a young man was charged and convicted of brutally murdering his mother. The streamer has canceled the Peter Sarsgaard-led drama after only a single season, Variety has confirmed. News of the show’s demise comes around ten months after it first launched on All Access.

It was based on a true story that spanned more than 30 years, in which a young man was charged and convicted of brutally murdering his mother. Each episode was structured around an interrogation taken directly from the real police case files, and the episodes were made with the intention of allowing viewers to watch them in any order.

A limited series about a deadly virus that decimates the majority of the population may not seem like purely escapist entertainment during a year when a very real pandemic ravaged the globe, forcing production and other businesses to shut down and pushing events, such as Mipcom, online only.
Yet, it is the very combination of timely premise, immersive world and rich characters that make Benjamin Cavell’s nine-part adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Stand” wholly relevant.
“What better moment for a show that imagines that civilization torn down to the studs, forcing our characters to confront questions about the very foundations of government, what society owes the individual and vice versa, what we all as humans owe to one another [and] what we’re willing to sacrifice in terms of personal liberty in order to feel safe and protected?” says Cavell.
“The Stand” was first published as an 800-plus novel...

CBS All Access has given out a series order to the comedic documentary series “For Heaven’s Sake.”
Created by and starring Mike Mildon and Jackson Rowe, the series will follow the search for Harold Heaven, who mysteriously disappeared from his remote cabin in Ontario, Canada, in the winter of 1934. While local police searched the nearby woods and dredged the adjacent lake, Harold was never found nor heard from again. The case was unceremoniously closed as a likely suicide. 85 years later, his great-great-nephew, Mike, attempts to solve the case, with the help of his extended family and true-crime-obsessed best friend, Jackson.
Mildon and Rowe will also executive produce alongside Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault from “American Vandal,” Joe Farrell of Funny Or Die, and Jonas Prupas and Courtney Dobbins of Muse Entertainment.
“We were struck by how fascinating and complex this very real 80-year-old cold case is. And by how...

ViacomCBS CEO Bob Bakish Tuesday called Paramount, “one of the most storied brands in Hollywood” and a “natural choice” of name and content machine for its fast-growing Ott service in a rebrand announced this morning.
Previous Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman wanted to unload the studio, or a big chunk of it. But Bakish is making it the beating heat of the company. The studio has “over a century old legacy of producing great content, is a brand that has always brought people together and, importantly, it’s a band that leverages ViacomCBS’ global position with near universal brand recognition.”
Bakish was speaking at a Goldman Sachs media conference on a busy day for the company, which this morning announced the name and some details for Paramount+, a rebranding of its CBS All Access streaming service, to debut early next year.
ViacomCBS shares were up over 2% mid-afternoon in a flattish market.

ViacomCBS today confirmed Paramount+ as the new name for the company’s CBS All Access streaming service.
The rebrand, which takes effect in early 2021, had been reported in recent weeks and executives have been talking about the revamp throughout this year. The official announcement of the shift didn’t offer many surprises apart from some notable original programming news on a series about the making of The Godfather and a spy show from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan.
Showtime, the sister streaming service to CBS All Access, will continue to operate separately from Paramount+. Some form of bundling is likely down the line, though no plans have been set on that front. Most CBS All Access subscribers pay $6 a month for an ad-supported version, with others forking over $10 a month for an ad-free experience.
Together, the two services had 16.2 million subscribers as of the end of June. ViacomCBS has never broken...
