Wolfgang Puck’s now-iconic Chinois on Main, which pioneered what came to be known as Asian fusion or Pacific Rim cuisine, has turned 40 this year. An entertainment industry haven since the day it opened in Santa Monica at the address of a former New Wave punk club, it’s since gone from radical to old guard. The restaurant’s starry clientele has ranged from Tom Selleck and Mike Ovitz to Gwyneth Paltrow and Frank Gehry (who is now designing Puck’s planned replacement of the oceanfront Gladstone’s restaurant along Pch).

Imagine the 96th Academy Awards ceremony opening with an epic “Barbie” musical medley.
According to Puck’s “What I’m Hearing” newsletter, The Academy wants it to happen. Who foots the bill on the production is another story. Typically the studios are responsible, but as Matthew Belloni writes, “Warners is selling off movies to raise money these days. By the time the Oscars arrive, marketing and awards budgets are spent, so who knows?”
But with three major songs vying for awards recognition — Dua Lipa’s disco pop ode “Dance the Night,” Ryan Gosling’s climactic centerpiece “I’m Just Ken” and Billie Eilish’s ballad “What Was I Made For?” — “Barbie” is the obvious pick for an extravagant Oscars musical number.
Director Greta Gerwig has been out campaigning for the three songs, which will all likely make the original song shortlist next next month, but only two songs from a given film can land nominations,...

With Road Runner-like speed, Warner Bros. Discovery has reversed its decision to bury Coyote vs. Acme.
The studio will now allow director Dave Green to shop his live-action/animation hybrid movie to other potential buyers instead of shelving the project for a tax write-off, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Amazon is said to be a contender, with screenings for potential buyers taking place this month. Puck was first to report the news of the reversal.
The move comes days after the The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Coyote vs. Acme would become Warners third already-shot film to get shelved after previously nixing nearly completed projects Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt in August 2022.
After Batgirl and Scoob! were dumped, a group of filmmakers with business at the studio started a text chain — a support group of sorts — to share their hopes and their anxieties, as well as encouragement and tips for navigating the studio.

“Coyote vs. Acme” is officially on the market.
Days after Warner Bros. announced it’s shelving the completed Looney Tunes-inspired film as a $30 million tax write-off, the studio is letting the filmmakers shop “Coyote vs. Acme” to other distributors. Puck, a newsletter covering the industry, and Deadline first reported that screenings are being set up for Amazon Prime Video, Apple and Netflix to acquire the movie, which finished filming in 2022 and was intended to play in theaters.
Amazon and Netflix were active buyers during the pandemic as traditional studios were siphoning off films for extra cash, but nothing has been ironed out for “Coyote vs. Acme.” Sources familiar with negotiations say the movie hasn’t been screened yet. In these instances, rights go to the highest bidder. It’s unclear if another company would want to buy a movie that Warner Bros. deemed unworthy to release on the big or small screen.

“Coyote Vs. Acme” may have just dodged a fatal anvil.
The live-action/animated movie is getting a new shot at being released after Warner Bros. pulled the plug on the completed film. John Cena and Will Forte star in the Warner Bros. movie, with the studio announcing November 9 that it would be scrapped for a tax write-off for Warner Bros. Discovery’s Q3 earnings. The $70 million project was completed in New Mexico in 2022 and was set to stream on Max July 21. James Gunn produced the feature and was also credited with the story; “May December” screenwriter Samy Burch penned the script with Dave Green directing.

A24 has a biopic of Elon Musk in development, with The Whale helmer Darren Aronofsky on board to direct, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
A24 optioned Walter Issacson’s new biography of Musk, the controversial CEO of Tesla Motors and SpaceX, which will be turned into a film adaptation. Aronofsky is set to direct and produce the film with his production company Protozoa Pictures.
Aronofsky previously partnered with A24 on The Whale, for which star Brendan Fraser earned an Academy Award. The book option deal is understood to have been highly competitive with top studios and filmmakers in the running.
Published by Simon & Schuster, Issacson’s book explores the 52-year-old’s upbringing in South Africa by a “charismatic fantasist” engineer father, Errol Musk, and dietician mother, Maye Musk, who now moonlights as a model.

Darren Aronofsky has always been attracted to stories of extremity – whether it’s the bodily intensity of :a[The Wrestler]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/wrestler-review/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'} and :a[The Whale]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/the-whale/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'}, the psychological torment of :a[Mother!]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/mother-5-review/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'} and :a[Black Swan]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/black-swan-review/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'}, the religious endurance of Noah, or the actual endurance test that is :a[Requiem For A Dream]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/requiem-dream-review/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'}. And for his next project, he’s found something that’s set to invoke all kinds of extreme reactions – because it centers on a person who’s divisive to the nth degree.

The writers’ strike ending weeks ago means projects are back in development. Variety has now confirmed, from a story that Puck reported, that a new biopic is in development at A24 that will depict the life of the controversial Tesla Motors CEO and owner of Twitter, now called X, Elon Musk. The project also already has a director attached, with The Whale‘s Darren Aronofsky on board to tell the story of the tech billionaire. The movie is set to use Walter Isaacson’s authorized biography as a source for the film’s script. There hasn’t yet been a writer announced to pen the screenplay.
There are sources that have told Variety that there was an intense bidding war for the option of adapting Isaacson’s book. The indie studio notorious for its projects that are less accessible to mass audiences, A24, is said to emerge as the victor.

Darren Aronofsky has lined up his next project: a biopic on the life of Elon Musk for A24.
A representative for A24 confirmed the project to IndieWire; it was originally reported by Puck. The film will be based on Walter Isaacson’s biography of the tech mogul and SpaceX CEO, published this past September. Isaacson’s 2011 biography of Steve Jobs inspired the 2015 Oscar-nominated film directed by Danny Boyle.
The Elon Musk biopic marks the “Requiem for a Dream” filmmaker’s second homegrown project at A24 after last year’s “The Whale” won Brendan Fraser the Oscar for Best Actor. Prior to “The Whale,” Aronofsky directed the provocative biblical allegory “mother!” for Paramount and, in 2011, received an Academy Award nomination for Best Director for Searchlight’s “Black Swan.” Most recently, Aronofsky directed the film “Postcards from Earth,” currently showing exclusively at The Sphere in Las Vegas.

An Elon Musk biopic is in development at A24 with Darren Aronofsky on board to direct, Variety has confirmed.
Walter Isaacson’s authorized biography of the controversial tech mogul, which was published in September, will serve as the basis for the screenplay. Isaacson’s “Steve Jobs” book was previously adapted into the 2015 Universal film of the same name, starring Michael Fassbender as the Apple CEO.
Sources tell Variety that there was heated competition to option Isaacson’s book from studios and filmmakers alike, with A24 ultimately winning the bidding war. Aronofsky, who most recently directed last year’s Oscar contender “The Whale” starring Brendan Fraser, is known for his surreal filmmaking style, which often includes psychological elements. His past credits include “Requiem for a Dream” (2000), “Black Swan” (2010) and “Mother!” (2017). For his work on “Black Swan,” Aronofsky was nominated for the best director Oscar, while Portman ended up winning the best actress award.

Kevin Costner’s exit from “Yellowstone” will reportedly result in the death of his character, wealthy rancher John Dutton.
And when Dutton does shuffle off this mortal coil, Costner will have control over the manner in which that happens.
That’s the report coming from Puck, which claims that Costner’s “Yellowstone” contract contains a “moral death” clause, added during one of his contract negotiations.

According to the outlet, the clause “lists in general terms the various ways that Costner’s character can and can’t be killed off, including deaths that would cause shame or embarrassment to John Dutton — and, implicitly, to Costner and his family.”

Yellowstone fans were shocked when it was announced several months ago that the current incarnation of the series would be coming to an end as Kevin Costner had decided to depart. However, it wasn’t entirely a done deal, as the actor was still willing to return for the second half of the fifth season and perhaps even more. But according to Puck (via TVLine), Kevin Costner had a number of demands, including the right to review, approve, and potentially veto every Yellowstone script. That obviously didn’t sit well with series co-creator Taylor Sheridan, who has written or co-written every episode.
In addition to veto power over the Yellowstone scripts, Kevin Costner also wanted more money and a reduced shooting schedule. The reduced schedule was to give him enough time to shoot his Western epic, Horizon. It remains to be seen what will happen to Costner’s character in Yellowstone,...

John Dutton’s Yellowstone fate was reportedly sealed when star Kevin Costner added a script veto power to his list of contract demands amid the ongoing dispute between him and series creator Taylor Sheridan. According to Puck, an entertainment industry newsletter, Costner and Sheridan met via phone in July to discuss the possibility of Costner’s character not being killed off in Season 5B, which will be the series’ final chapter. Costner is said to have expressed interest in staying on the series through a potential sixth and seventh season, but he had a list of demands that Sheridan couldn’t get behind. Sheridan completed the Yellowstone Season 5B scripts before the WGA writers’ strike began on May 2, 2023 (Sheridan writes every script for the series on his own and has since the show began). Per Puck, Sheridan was open to the idea of revisiting the 5B scripts after the writers...

With the final episodes of Yellowstone still a long way off, a new report about how much creative control Kevin Costner had in the Paramount Network drama has come to light.
According to Puck News, Costner had a "moral death" provision as part of his contract.
This reportedly meant that the actor had a say in how John Dutton can and cannot be killed off, assuming the show travels that avenue.
While there have been reports that the final episodes have yet to be written, Puck claims that episodes for the back half of Yellowstone Season 5 had been written but didn't include the show's leading man.
Costner, whose availability has been reported as a big concern for the series, was allegedly interested in returning for the rest of the season -- and beyond.
The outlet states that Sheridan was interested in keeping Costner around but that it all fell apart...

After days of negative headlines chronicling a client exodus, Scooter Braun needed some good press. So, on August 29, the Daily Mail came through, publishing an article with the headline: “Scooter Braun’s label teams up with billionaire David Geffen’s former record company to create Ultimate ‘global girl group’; talent search docuseries for Netflix.” The only problem? Braun has nothing to do with the series.
That Netflix project, announced last month as a global girl group audition docuseries that will premiere in 2024, comes from K-Pop powerhouse company, Hybe and Geffen Records. Braun is CEO of Hybe America. While one of Braun’s direct reports is overseeing the project, Braun has never had any involvement with the series, Variety has learned. Netflix and Braun declined to comment.

You know something massive is coming when AMC Theatres announces that it has "bolstered its ticket server capacity to handle traffic at more than five times the current record for the most ever tickets sold in an hour." That's the power of Taylor Swift.
Coming as a total surprise to fans, haters, and the entire Hollywood studio system alike, Taylor Swift dropped a surprise announcement on Instagram that a concert film of her record-breaking Eras Tour will be coming exclusively to theaters in October. Swift's grand return to the arena, after releasing four albums during the pandemic with no opportunity to tour, took the form of a roughly three-hour-long nightly retrospective of her nearly 20-year-long career. The Eras Tour has been credited with boosting the federal economy, generating minor seismic activity in the Seattle area, and earning over $1 billion in ticket sales, merchandise, and marketing.
