Saturday nights are no longer for going out - The X Factor is finally returning to our small screens this weekend with new hosts, a fresh judging panel and a fair few format shake-ups.
But whatever happened to the finalists of the first ever series - "barking bloody mad" Rowetta Satchell, red-haired wannabe rocker Tabby Callaghan, cheesy best friend duo 2 to Go and eventual winner Steve Brookstein?
Roberta Howett
Roberta Howett went from unhappy telecommunications worker to Louis Walsh's Dublin darling after her successful X Factor audition. But perhaps it was the curse of the Walsh that resulted in her early exit from the series when she became the first act to be eliminated.
Now 33, Roberta appeared on the debut album of Spanish composer Toni Castells in 2007. She finally released her debut album in 2010, its lead single 'Beautiful Lies' became her first Top 40 single in the Irish Singles Chart,...

Simon is back. Cheryl is back. Louis never went away in the first place. But who else could do an X Factor U-turn and try to rescue the show's faltering ratings?
If 2014 is going to be the year of the comeback on the ITV talent show, here are 6 more things that could potentially return to your autumn Saturday night TV schedule.
1. Gamu
Dumped by Cheryl for Katie 'sod it' Waissel in 2010, Gamu Nhengu's exit was, and always will be, a sore point for X Factor diehards. After being set up as a potential champion with her 'Walking on Sunshine' audition in the first show, there was a national outcry (well, we moaned about it a bit anyway) when she was axed. Gamu-gate and the hastag #bringbackGamu were born and we won't let them die until she gets a second chance.
2. Konnie Huq on The Xtra Factor

Happy 10th anniversary to The X Factor!
We've already compiled a few of our favourite X Factor moments over the past decade, so now we're going to celebrate with a quiz to see if you can name the following 10 ex-finalists.
Do you recognise any of these former hopeful faces? Have a go below:
1. Series 5 - guess the X Factor finalist
Can you remember this slightly cheesy (and extremely hair conscious) performer mentored by Simon Cowell back on The X Factor back in 2008?
Following his X Factor departure, he's performed at Butlin's Holiday Park in Skegness, turned on the Stevenage town Christmas lights and appeared in Attitude magazine's naked edition.
2. Series 8 - guess the X Factor finalist
No-one could remember this act's name while she was on the show, so we doubt it'll spring to mind two years on. That's a shame, because this former barmaid from London had a really...

The founding Happy Mondays members have begun work on their first album since 1992's Yes Please, their manager has confirmed. Mark Day, Paul Davis and Paul Ryder returned to the Madchester group in January as they reformed for a fourth time. However, frontman Shaun Ryder had strongly refuted claims that a sixth record was being made, following comments made by backing singer Rowetta Satchell in February. Happy Mondays boss Warren Askew said in a statement to NME: "Yes, we are now planning to record a new album, after the success of the tour and with the band all getting on so well. "Shaun has been writing and the band have been getting together in the studio putting ideas down. I'm sure it will be a great Happy Mondays album." Explaining his U-turn to the (more)...

Shaun Ryder has insisted that the Happy Mondays will not record a new album to mark their reunion. The Madchester band's original lineup officially reformed in January for an 11-date UK comeback tour. However, lead vocalist Ryder told Real Radio that the group have "absolutely no plans" to write and record a new LP after their May gigs. His comments seem to contradict backing singer and former X Factor contestant Rowetta Satchell's statement last month that the band hope to land a record deal and release new material. Happy Mondays have confirmed that they are to reunite. The 'Step On' band's original lineup Shaun Ryder, his brother Paul, Bez, Gary Whelan and Paul Davis met last week to commit to an 11-date UK tour in May. Shaun Ryder said: "We all met up last week and some of the lads haven't seen each other in over 10, 15 years. "It's as if we've never been apart - so good to all be in the same room again. We can't wait now to get on tour and play the songs that made us famous." Backing singer and former X Factor contestant Rowetta Satchell confirmed the news to BBC Radio Manchester's Darryl Morris yesterday (January 29). "It's been in the making for ages," she said. "We've been talking about it for a long time, but it's [been about] getting everybody to say (more)...

The original lineup of the Happy Mondays have reportedly announced their return. Shaun Ryder, his brother Paul, Gary Whelan, Bez and Rowetta Satchell will return for live shows this year, together with Mark Day and Paul Davis, who both sat out the band's 1999 comeback, The Quietus reports. The group said in a statement published by the website: "The rumours are true... Happy Mondays, the seminal Manchester band who changed musical culture forever has reformed and will be available for select live gigs across 2012." Rumours of a return were shrugged off by a spokesperson last month, but Shaun Ryder later hinted that there was "a lot to look forward to next year". Happy Mondays formed in the mid-1980s and released four albums before splitting in 1993. Shaun Ryder and Bez (more)...

“Simon loves animals and thinks they make great TV — even when things go wrong,” an insider told Showbiz Spy.
“The idea would be to raise money for animal charities while highlighting some of the talented pets out there.”

X Factor star Rowetta Satchell is considering taking legal action against Cheryl Cole, after she used a sample of her voice during her Brit’s performance of `Fight For This Love’.
The former X Factor finalist had reportedly refused to give Cole permission to use the sample, because the vocals were to be mimed by another singer.
The former Happy Mondays singer wrote on her Twitter: “Can’t believe they used my sample at The Brits, after saying they’d have to use something else, because they didn’t want me to sing it there.
“Very flattered, but also disappointed!
“Haven’t been able to get hold of anyone at Polydor this morning, they’re probably still hungover from all the parties! We will be seeing our lawyers.”
On Cole’s performance, she added: “To be honest I wasn’t watching properly, just listening out to see if they used the sample,...

Former Happy Mondays singer Rowetta is threatening legal action against Cheryl Cole after the singer allegedly used a sample of her vocals at the Brit Awards without permission. Rowetta - full name Rowetta Satchell - was approached by Cole's representatives who asked to use her dancefloor hit "Be" in a performance at the show in London on Tuesday, February 16.
But Rowetta was left fuming when they snubbed her offer to sing live at the event, revealing plans for an unknown backing singer to lip sync the vocals instead. The singer alleges Cole's reps assured her they would choose a different sample to use at the show and she was stunned when she watched the performance of Cole's hit "Fight for This Love" and heard her voice used in the track.

Former X Factor contestant and Happy Mondays singer Rowetta, is furious with Cheryl Cole after the Girls Aloud star asked to use her vocals for an upcoming award show – but told her she didn’t want her to appear on stage.
Cole will be sampling Rowetta’s dancefloor hit “Be” for a live performance of her single “Fight for This Love” at the upcoming Brit Awards.
However, during the performance Cheryl will be asking another woman to mime along with Rowetta’s vocals.
“Her record company asked to use my sample but wanted an ‘anonymous face’. Rowetta told The Sun.
“I said I’m happy to perform but they don’t want that. Imagine if I wanted to sample Cheryl and got someone to mime her voice. That would never be allowed.”

This year’s X Factor winner won’t release their debut album until next autumn according to Simon Cowell. At yesterday’s X factor press conference Simon revealed that this year’s champion will follow in the footsteps of former winner’s Alexandra Burke and Leona Lewis and spend at least seven to nine months making their first album.
He said: “You can’t make a decent album in less than seven or nine months.
“We’ll do what we did with Leona Lewis, Alexandra Burke and Susan Boyle – take longer and release it when The X Factor returns.”
Simon is also confident that whoever wins will be as popular in America as they are in the UK.
He said: “They ‘re the guy and girl next door. They haven’t come from ghastly stage school backgrounds, they haven’t had an awful lot of experience.”
