Plot: An astronaut who returns to Earth after a disaster in space only to discover that key pieces of her life seem to be missing. The action-packed space adventure is an exploration of the dark edges of human psychology, and one woman’s desperate quest to expose the truth about the hidden history of space travel and recover all that she has lost.
Review: Man, the International Space Station is getting trashed lately. For years, films like Gravity and The Cloverfield Paradox as well as countless others have used the station as the setting for disaster, but this year alone has had more than one project featuring it. First, the horror film I.S.S. made the triumphant existence of a joint space station a thing of terror and now Constellation fills viewers with a sense of foreboding surrounding the orbiting satellite. The resulting series is a psychological thriller that combines elements of horror,...

Almost seven years to the day since it began, we’re about to give a royal wave of farewell to Netflix drama The Crown, but series six might be its most eye-opening yet, as its first part (out on November 16) deals with the events surrounding the tragic death of Princess Diana.
Some critics’ hackles might be up already after the show previously attracted condemnation for historical inaccuracies, so it will be especially interesting to see how the show covers such an emotive and important event in royal history, and just where the story ends when the final episodes are released on 14th December.
Even so, many fans will be disappointed not to see more recent events get The Crown treatment, like that Prince Andrew interview and Harry and Meghan’s very public royal uncoupling, but is it so far beyond the realms of possibility that the show might have a...

Crime never pays across the Coen brothers’ oeuvre, whether they’re out for laughs (“Fargo”) or in a mood (“No Country For Old Men”). So it makes bubbling cauldrons of sense that a debut Shakespeare flex for Joel Coen, making his first movie without brother Ethan, would be the Bard’s ultimate comeuppance scorcher, “The Tragedy of Macbeth.”
Despite, that is, having already made one outlaw-couple-on-a-deadend-spree saga.
Stacked with great performances, anchored by Denzel Washington’s masterfully weary soldier-turned-murderer Macbeth and Frances McDormand as his hard-edged conspirator-turned-madwoman of a spouse, and starkly rendered in expressionistic black and white, Coen’s version of one of the most oft-quoted of Shakespeare’s works is a bracingly textured cinematic plunge into some classically dark waters.
Other filmmakers have memorably dramatized the “foul is fair, fair is foul” story of the Scottish warrior in a blood-soaked, fearful hurry to realize a destiny that ultimately...

The BBC’s Philip Pullman adaptation is a rich family fantasy that retains the books’ dark power…
This His Dark Materials review is spoiler-free. It was originally published on Den of Geek UK.
Current wisdom teaches that the age of family home viewing is over; parents and kids no longer crowd around the TV in a tumble of wet-from-the-bath hair, pyjamas and shushing. Instead, they’re dispersed around the home and plugged into separate devices.
That may be largely so, but it’s not the whole picture. In 2017, Ofcom reported that 70% of UK families still watch a shared TV programme at least once a week. If you’re among them and open to suggestion, then from Sunday the 3rd of November, make it this one.
In terms of family viewing, His Dark Materials is the real thing: as Douglas Adams might have said, it’s both complicated...

Exclusive: Entertainment One (eOne) and British production company Mam Tor Productions are developing a TV adaptation of Helen Monks Takhar’s upcoming novel Precious You.
The book, which is a generation gap thriller, is being adapted by Monks Takhar herself and her husband Danny Takhar, who is a former Sky drama executive. Former BBC Films and Amazon exec Beth Pattison, who has worked on feature films including Brooklyn and On Chesil Beach, will serve as story consultant for the adaptation.
Precious You explores the explosive toxic rivalry between millennial, Lily, and Gen X queen, Katherine, when their professional and personal lives collide. As their resentment, and connection, deepens, the two are drawn into a dangerous and obsessive cat-and-mouse game.
The adaptation comes ahead of the publication of the novel by Harper Collins HQ in the UK and Penguin Random House in the U.S. It is expected to be released in April 2020. Monks Takhar,...

The first scene of Channel 4’s upcoming “Baghdad Central,” created and written by Stephen Butchard and lead-directed by Alice Troughton, captures, with a jolt, the hectic hubbub of an ordinary street scene in Baghdad: One man fixes a container, banging it rhythmically as if it were a drum; there’s the table of street conversation, a car tooting, people throwing a dice, a woman selling fruit.
Produced by Fremantle’s Euston Films and sold by Fremantle, “Baghdad Central” surprises in other ways. Apart from a brief prelude, it unspools from November 2003, when Baghdad has fallen to Coalition forces, but is told majorly from the point of view of normal occupied Iraqis, especially former inspector Muhsin al-Khafaji of the Iraqi police, once an upright respected cop, and his two daughters, the gravely ill Mrouj and the estranged Sawsan.
The Americans, are the but of their barbs, barbarians who want to secure the country,...

“Bitterness, really” is Paul Kaye’s explanation of what drove his satirical red-carpet interviewer Dennis Pennis in the nineties. “I’d hit thirty, I’d sort of failed as a musician, I’d failed as an artist I felt at the time.” Ambushing Hollywood’s elite in the persona of a brash, punk nuisance wasn’t Kaye’s first choice for stardom, he admits. “It wasn’t how I expected to forge a career. Of all the things I thought I’d end up doing, it wasn’t that.”

Some exciting new UK drama and comedy commissions are making their way to TV over the next year or so…
We know, we know. You still have two episodes of Fargo season two before you can think about starting season three. You’ve already fallen behind on American Gods. Your planner memory is chock-a-block with Big Little Lies and that Oj Simpson thing and some Spanish prison series your workmate bullied you into recording. You’re struggling to make time for Twin Peaks. New Game Of Thrones is just around the corner. And guess what, Netflix UK have just added a whole new season of It’s Always Sunny, those sods. You need a list of new TV show recommendations like you need a hole in the head.

For every straightforward drama, there is a genre series that takes things a step or two into paranormal phenomena. And then a step or two beyond that are series that are completely different, or absurd or a combination of both, like a Doctor Who or Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell or Twin Peaks, etc. Those are series you have to just go with — you have to willingly opt in — to enjoy. This is most assuredly the case with BBC America's newest drama, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, which is based on the novels of Douglas Adams and adapted by

We salute the film work of one of Britain's very best, and most versatile, film actors: Mr Eddie Marsan...
Eddie Marsan isn't just one of the best British actors working today – he's also one of the busiest, appearing in all kinds of supporting roles in major movies, while also appearing on TV a lot, on both sides of the Atlantic. He was fantastic as the latter lead in BBC One's Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell last year and he's also a regular on Showtime's Ray Donovan as Ray's brother Terry, an ex-boxer suffering from Parkinson's disease.
On the big screen though, it's Marsan's versatility that really makes him so watchable. He's had attention grabbing turns in minor roles in blockbusters like Hancock, Mission: Impossible III and Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes films, but he's also at home amongst a big ensemble in more serious fare like Spielberg...

All 6 episodes of The Living And The Dead, from the co-creator of Life On Mars, will debut this Friday the 17th of June on BBC iPlayer...
In a repeat of last year's successful online-box-set-then-traditional-broadcast-release (snappier name required) of Peter Kay's Car Share, the BBC is launching its first original drama 'box-set'.
All six episodes of spooky new period drama The Living And The Dead, created by Life On Mars' Ashley Pharoah and starring Merlin's Colin Morgan and Glue's Charlotte Spencer, will be available to watch from this Friday the 17th of June on BBC iPlayer. The episodes will then receive a weekly airing starting from Tuesday the 28th of June at 9pm.
It's a smart move from the BBC, one that will transform iPlayer into more than simply a catch-up service. Traditional viewers won't lose out on week-by-week viewings, while those more used to gulping down entire series whenever it suits them can do just that.
The Living And The Dead is in the tradition of the dark English pastoral, a creepy countryside tale of the strange goings-on that beset a young psychologist (Morgan) and his photographer wife (Spencer) when they move back to his childhood West Country home in 1894.
We'll have more for you on the show later this week.

Pottermore.com has released the first images from the Harry Potter update Harry Potter And The Cursed Child with Jamie Parker as Harry, Poppy Miller as his wife, Ginny, and Sam Clemmett as Harry’s troubled son Albus.
The previews of both Parts 1 and 2 of the West End play written by Jack Thorne are coming next week, but these portraits give a right peek at the characters, and their resemblance to the actors who played them in the Harry Potter film series is uncanny. J.K. Rowling herself said about Parker: “He simply is Harry now. There’s a kind of relief in watching him, he gets it so right.” High praise from the person who knows both Harry and his universe better than anyone!

The BFI has awarded National Lottery funding to the Yorkshire Screen Industries Hub through its Creative Clusters Challenge Fund which aims to support the growth of emerging screen sector centers outside London and the South-East and enable the UK film, TV and games industry to expand and maintain its competitiveness in a global industry.
The Yorkshire Screen Industries Hub which comprises a consortium of organizations in Yorkshire and the Humber will receive £127,000 through the BFI’s Creative Clusters Fund as seed funding for a plan to expand the region’s creative sector infrastructure and skills base, attract further private investment and enable the region to complement Media City and the North East in expanding its growing and vibrant screen and media industries. The BFI Award is matched by regional partners to create a total investment of £254,000.
Leeds has the greatest digital and creative business growth in the region; the creative industries represent York’s fastest growing sector; Sheffield is an international hub for documentary and digital media; and Hull features as one of the top 16 digital clusters in the Tech Nation 2015 report Powering the Digital Economy.
The Yorkshire Screen Industries Hub consortium partners Screen Yorkshire, Game Republic and Sheffield International Documentary Festival (Sheffield Doc/Fest) have drawn match funding from the cities of Bradford, Hull, Leeds, Sheffield and York; the local authorities for Calderdale, Harrogate and Kirklees and six leading UK universities – Bradford, Huddersfield, Hull, Leeds Beckett, Sheffield Hallam and York. Lead industry bodies including Creative Skillset, Tiga and Ukie are supporting the creative cluster bid alongside industry partners and businesses including Warp Films, True North, Daisybeck Studios, Prime Studios, Fettle Animation, 104 Films and Revolution Software.
Amanda Nevill, Chief Executive of the BFI says, “There’s something exciting happening in Yorkshire’s screen sector and there is huge potential in this dynamic region, so we’re thrilled to support such a range of fantastic partners who have come together with one common goal: to ensure Yorkshire’s burgeoning screen industries continue to grow and flourish. The UK’s screen industries are thriving and if we are to support future growth it is vital that more areas outside London become international hubs - this support for Yorkshire is significant and we look forward to announcing further Creative Clusters in the coming months.”
Sally Joynson, Chief Executive at Screen Yorkshire says, “This is fantastic news for everyone working in the film, TV and gaming sectors in Yorkshire, now and in the future. It’s a huge vote of confidence in our screen industries and will enable us to build a compelling case for further investment in the sector. Over the last three years alone, Screen Yorkshire has invested more than £14 million into 38 feature films and TV programs, including the new feature film 'Dad’s Army,' award-winning TV drama 'Peaky Blinders' and BAFTA™ nominated feature '’71.'
“We’ll be embarking on a program of work from January 2016, in partnership with industry leaders Game Republic and Sheffield Doc/Fest, to shape the region’s screen landscape for years to come; stimulating economic growth, creating new jobs and helping us to nurture a new generation of talent helping to establish Yorkshire as a global center for film, television and gaming.”
Yorkshire has seen a surge in production of major feature films and TV productions establishing a strong reputation for the region’s production facilities, crews, talent and locations. Screen Yorkshire’s own investment in 38 film and TV productions through the Yorkshire Content Fund has generated over £40 million of spend on the region’s businesses, services and talent. Major films which have been made in Yorkshire include "Dad’s Army" currently number one at the UK box office following its release on Friday (5 February) and the upcoming adaptation of "Swallows and Amazons" as well as "Testament of Youth," "A Royal Night Out," and the award-winning "’71." Major TV productions made in the region include the multi award-winning TV series "Peaky Blinders," "Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell," "An Inspector Calls," "Jericho," "Victoria," "Happy Valley" and "This is England."
Yorkshire and Humber also has a strong video games ecosystem which includes business network Game Republic, as well as major internationally-recognized games studios including Team17, Sumo Digital and Revolution Software, as well as informal groups such as GaMaYo, and smaller independent start-ups such as Red Kite Games and Boneloaf. Yorkshire and Humber is also home to Games Britannia, an award-winning video games education festival hosted by Sheffield Hallam, and the innovative and exciting Platform Expos in Hull.
The region also has strong international business and cultural links including with emerging markets for the creative sector. Sheffield Doc/Fest, a world leading documentary festival that celebrates the art and business of documentary, welcomes over 30,000 documentary-makers and film lovers each June, including 3,500 industry delegates from more than 60 countries. Bradford is the first city in the world to be a Unesco City of Film; Bradford and York are connected with 69 cities in 32 countries through the Unesco Creative Cities Network; the region’s university and college partners have forged partnerships with Mumbai, Malaysia and China; and York is also a member of the Connecting Cities media arts network which encourages collaboration with cities spanning Berlin to Sao Paulo and Helsinki to Melbourne.
The screen industries are one of the UK’s biggest success stories delivering significant economic and cultural benefits to the UK - the BFI’s statistics for last year showed that over £1.4 billion was spent on film and high-end TV production in the UK alone. London and the South East are central to the UK’s success as it is where the vast majority of screen businesses are based but to sustain growth in this fast-growing sector and maintain the UK’s international competitiveness, developing capacity outside the capital and the South East is essential. Capitalising on the creative, technological and business development opportunities that are generating growth elsewhere in the UK is central to the BFI’s UK-wide ambitions and strategy for the UK’s film and screen sector.
The BFI’s Creative Cluster Challenge Fund was launched in summer 2015 to encourage and support emerging screen industry clusters (film, television, animation and video games) outside London and the South East. The award to the Yorkshire region follows a competitive applications process. The BFI intends to re-open applications to the fund, for a second round of awards, in May 2016.
The North of England is home to 15 million people comparable to 17 million in London and the South East combined.

Now the young actress (whose credits include Sally Potter's Ginger and Rosa and BBC One's Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell) has made one of her own.
The Boyfriend Game premiered at Tiff last year, but Englert couldn't attend - "I was in New Zealand acting in a film. It was a bummer not to go".
The film has now been invited to the Berlinale, and Englert won't miss it.
The Boyfriend Game was shot over two days at the Colo River in Nsw, and is about "two little girls, friends, playing a game they've created at a farmhouse in the Australian bush. They discover difficulties when they become competitive over one of their imaginary boyfriends"..

Mr Robot, Cucumber, Inside No. 9...Here are Den Of Geek writers' top 15 TV episodes of 2015. Did your favourites make the cut?
The votes are in.
Earlier this month, over thirty of Den Of Geek's writers nominated up to five of their favourite television episodes of the year, ranked in order of preference. Points were allocated. Favourites emerged. And the sanity of the site's TV editor was offered once again as a festive sacrifice to the God of Microsoft Excel worksheets.
Over eighty individual episodes were nominated in total, and below are the fifteen that placed highest overall...
15. Rick & Morty – Total Rickall
What our writer said:
“Clip shows are traditionally seen as ways to save money, building a flimsy narrative framework of nostalgia-fuelled new footage around flashbacks to previous episodes. Somehow, Dan Harmon's shows usually manage to put more effort into spoofing this type of episode than any other episode.

According to British website Broadcast Now, the production company Mammoth Screen is developing a new adaptation of author Hg Wells sci-fi novel, "The War of the Worlds." The production company is working with Jonathan Strange and "Doctor Who" writer Peter Harness to pen a miniseries based on the novel that will stay faithful to the source material and setting.
The story was a first-person narrative which chronicles an unknown protagonist as massive extraterrestrial spacecrafts invade Victorian England. Paramount Pictures purchased the rights to the novel in 1926 and made two films; the first film released in 1953 that starred Gene Berry and Ann Robinson. The second film was directed by Steven Spielberg in 2005 and starred Tom Cruise.
Mammoth Screen managing director Damien Timmer talked about the influence of the book:
“The aftershock of The War Of The Worlds can still be felt in popular culture today. The story of a Martian invasion...

U.K. production company Mammoth Screen is planning a mini-series based on H.G. Wells' classic 1898 alien invasion story "War of the Worlds". Mammoth has reportedly secured funding in the U.K. and will soon actively seek out a company in the U.S. to be a co-producer.
Production isn't expected to take place until early 2017 as Paramount currently has the copyright privileges to the property - privileges that expire when the novel enters the public domain at the end of 2016.
Despite its popularity and several adaptations across various mediums, Wells' story has never had a straightforward TV adaptation to date. This will fill that niche, retaining the original's Victorian setting and time period.
Peter Harness, who adapted Susanna Clarke's "Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell" for TV this year and penned the recent acclaimed Zygon two-part story for "Doctor Who", will pen the script.

Peter Harness - of Doctor Who and Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell – is working on a new War Of The Worlds TV adaptation…
A new televised take on War Of The Worlds is in development. Production company Mammoth Screen (the owned-by-itv producers of Poldark) is leading the charge for a new adaptation of H.G. Wells’ iconic science-fiction novel.
They’ve enlisted the help of Peter Harness, who will write a miniseries that sticks closely to the original text. He’s said to be interested in keeping the action in its original time period (the book was released in serial format in 1897) and location (suburban Surrey, in the south of England).
That last bit is a tantalising prospect for anyone who’s ever been to Woking and wondered why there’s a massive alien statue in the town centre (pictured) and a conference centre dedicated to Wells. It’s this writer’s home town,...

BBC One has ordered a TV series based on Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials. Here's why TV should fare better than previous adaptations...
In 2007 New Line Cinema produced The Golden Compass. It was planned as the first in a trilogy, with the hope that it would provide a similar motion picture event to the studio's Lord Of The Rings trilogy. Instead, it nearly killed the studio. We looked at what went wrong with the movie in an earlier article: a tale of studio interference, patronising the audience, and not committing sufficiently to a story.
Now New Line has returned to the source material, and this time hopes are high. It was announced yesterday that Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter's newly formed Bad Wolf production company would be working with New Line to produce an adaptation for BBC One. Considering one of the problems with the...

Stars: Nicolas Hoult, Craig Roberts, James Corden, Tom Riley, Joseph Mawle, Georgia King, Ed Skrein, Jim Piddock | Written by John Niven | Directed by Owen Harris
Kill Your Friends is adapted from John Niven’s 2009 novel. It’s a late Nineties black comedy about the last hurrahs of post-Britpop record labels before the internet came along and devalued everything they’d built their expense accounts on. The book is to the music industry what Brett Easton Ellis’s American Psycho is to Wall Street. In so much that taking a life can be justified if winning is all and losing will get your fired.
Leading the film is Nicholas Hoult. He plays Stelfox – the ruthless and ambitious record company executive that lacks any morals or love of music. He simply craves success. Paradoxically, this has served him well to date, but the lack of a work ethic or plan is catching up with him.

It's utterly ludicrous on Dallas levels, but it's so damn addictive. The hip-hopera was one of the most-watched shows during its first season,...

Don’t expect a sudden shift to by-the-book detective work when Luther returns to BBC America for Season 4.
In the following first-look photo, Idris Elba’s titular detective appears to be playing fairly rough with a possible suspect — or perhaps it’s an uncooperative witness? — gently guiding forcibly dragging him out of a building with his fancy suit jacket pulled over his head.

BBC America also offers a tease about the two-part miniseries continuation of the Emmy-nominated, London-set crime drama: “Luther’s back. Pitted against his most chilling adversary yet,...

An Actor’s Life for Me is a British sitcom starring a stand out cast including John Gordon Sinclair (Gregory’s Girl), Victor Spinetti (A Hard Day’s Night and Gina McKee (Notting Hill). Written by The Vicar of Dibley’s co-writer Paul Mayhew Archer, and based on a hit Radio 4 series, it originally aired in 1991. This week sees several big-rating shows make their returns, alongside some intriguing new prospects. From the premiere of Channel 4's Hunted to our final visit to the This Is England gang, these are Digital Spy's top picks over the next seven days.
Monday - Doc Martin, ITV at 9pm
Martin Clunes is back for his seventh series as the grumpy doctor down in sleepy and pretty Cornwall, and the show's relaxed humour and atmosphere remains as popular as ever.
Sadly this episode doesn't include Sigourney Weaver's bizarre appearance, you'll have to wait a few weeks for that one. The opening episode sees Martin realising he needs to change to fix his marriage with Louisa (again), and so decides to go to a therapist. This cannot go well.
Tuesday - Ballers, Sky Atlantic at 10pm

There are plenty of reasons why summer is many people's favorite season – the quality of TV usually isn't one of them.
The months between May finales' live-Tweeting and fall premieres' awards-contender chatter has long been a proverbial dumping ground for shows the networks use to fill dead air between reruns and informercials. But that doesn't mean there aren't a few exceptions to this age-old pattern.
Below, we highlight nine summer TV shows that defy the odds and have made us year-round fans.

“It’s not a re-imagining or anything," says Enzo Cilenti, who will appear as Captain Dance in ITV's Jekyll And Hyde series...
Actor Enzo Cilenti has had a very geek-friendly few years recently, appearing in Guardians Of The Galaxy, Kick Ass 2, Game Of Thrones and the wonderful Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.
Now, he's nabbed a role in The Fast Show writer Charlie Higson's take on Jekyll And Hyde, for ITV. The upcoming show stars Tom Bateman and Richard E Grant. Mr Cilenti plays the villainous Captain W. M. Dance, and has been chatting to CultBox about the show.
“It’s amazing! There’s so many adaptations that you might think ‘I’m not entirely sure they need doing again,’" he admitted, "and when I saw the title Jekyll And Hyde I thought ‘Haven’t we done this? Haven’t we seen this?’. And then I got further down the email and though ‘Shit,...

Night of Knives by Ian Cameron Esslemont Review
Huge fan of the everything Malazan. I am of the opinion that Steven Erikson’s Malazan Book of the Fallen is the single finest fantasy series this or any other world has ever seen, surpassing my past and still very much loved favorites by George R. R. Martin, Roger Zelazny, Tolkien, and Patricia McKillip (because her Riddle of the Stars mesmerized me as a child.)
Later, fans of Erikson’s series would get chapters and tales from Ian Cameron Esslemont, Erikson’s co-creator of the setting. I think it’s fair to say these efforts were met with mixed reactions. The first of Esslemont’s entries was Night of Knives, which no doubt is meant to echo our own history’s Night of the Long Knives, and details the literal ascension of Kellanved and Dancer.
