Betty Gilpin said that acting in Glow was “the best job I’ll ever have.”
On Wednesday, the actress who stars as Debbie Eagan in the now-cancelled wrestling comedy, wrote a eulogy in Vanity Fair mourning and celebrating the show created by Liz Flahive and Carly Mesch.
“Glow was cancelled. I am sad. It was the best job I’ll ever have. Our business is a strange mix of attempting childhood dreams to a room full of asleep people and shirking dignity for awake tomato-throwers for rent. This was one of those extremely rare times where we got to do the dream for awake people,” she wrote.
In her essay, Gilpin went on to say how the Netflix show gave her some much-needed stability after hopping from one acting stint to another. The breakthrough, however wouldn’t have been possible without Flahive and Mensch, she continued.

In an era when TV’s top series are set in a diverse array of eras, it’s no longer enough to pull out a crimper and some blue eye shadow and call it the ’80s. With high-definition and cinema-quality production values now the prevailing TV standards, Emmy-caliber hair and makeup teams are crafting cosmetic color palettes and meticulously coiffed dos to perfectly reflect whatever period a show’s characters inhabit.

When Matthew Weiner planned his next project, there was never a question in his mind: He wanted to get the gang back together.
After all, the creator of the acclaimed drama “Mad Men” is renowned for his meticulous attention to detail, and indeed that series won multiple trophies for every aspect of its production. So when he conceived of “The Romanoffs,” Amazon’s new anthology series about characters who claim to be descendants of the legendary Russian royal family, the first calls he made were to the skilled artisans who shaped “Mad Men,” from casting and production design to costume and hair and makeup.
“They are the best at what they do,” says Weiner, who wrote and directed every episode. “It’s not just a friendship. It’s a matter of trust, and a matter of respect.”
But this time, instead of painstakingly depicting advertising culture in New York in the 1960s,...

An iconic women’s wrestling series of the ’80s, Glow (Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling) is remembered for its big, frizzy hair, glittery eye makeup and a charmingly scrappy aesthetic—the colorful visual choices it made with its characters. Bringing the Ladies into the comedy arena with Netflix’s Glow, series creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch were always going to bump up against the legacy of the original series, with the need for hair and makeup that would do it justice.
Enter Theraesa Rivers and Lana Horochowski, experts in period work—known for projects including Mad Men and The Last Tycoon—who could pull from their own childhood memories to portray ’80s stylings in a nuanced fashion. While the ’80s was a relatively easy decade to tackle, thinking back on their previous period efforts, the collaborators had to figure out how to design with the action of the wrestling ring in mind,...

Could you be a descendant of “The Romanoffs,” too?
In the latest trailer for Matthew Weiner’s new Amazon Prime Video series, that is the question on every character’s mind–except Amanda Peet‘s, who emphatically declares: “I’m so tired of this Romanov s—.”
“The Romanoffs,” Weiner’s highly-anticipated follow-up to “Mad Men,” will feature eight separate stories about people who believe themselves to be descendants of the Russian royal family. Weiner created, wrote, directed, and executive produced the series.
Shot on location in three continents and set in seven countries around the globe, each story takes place in a new location with a new cast.
The first episode, entitled “The Violet Hour,” stars Marthe Keller, Aaron Eckhart, Ines Melab, and Louise Bourgoin. Leading the second episode, “The Royal We,” are Corey Stoll, Kerry Bishe, Janet Montgomery, and Noah Wyle.

To create infamous cult leaders (“American Horror Story: Cult”), a legendary painter (“Genius: Picasso”), a world-renowned designer (“The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”) and the alter-egos of 1930s Hollywood (“The Last Tycoon”) — not to mention the return of one of the most beloved characters in television (Kyle MacLachlan’s FBI agent Dale Cooper in “Twin Peaks”) — the challenges in non-prosthetic makeup were equal parts honoring history and creating a legacy.

Yes, Netflix’s Glow provides a funny, albeit fictional, behind-the-scenes look into the rise of the 1980s phenomenon known as Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. Yes, it features comedic heavy hitters like Alison Brie (Community) and Marc Maron (Maron) sporting some truly fantastic period costumes. And yes, the show’s pedigreed production team includes Orange Is the New Black‘s Carly Mensch and Nurse Jackie‘s Liz Flahive, as well as Oitnb‘s Jenji Kohan.
But Glow also provided a vital lesson to its cast, courtesy of the hands-on training the actors underwent prior to the shoot.

This is the second year for the Makeup and Hairstylists Guild joining the awards game, and they've been a welcome addition to the circuit. They spread their nods thin across a number of categories, but it's a good window into what this branch digs, for sure. This year, the only two films on the Academy's bake-off list of finalists that didn't garner any recognition were "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and "Noah." Meaning "Foxcatcher," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Maleficent" and "The Theory of Everything" were each represented in one form or another. Meanwhile, "Guardians of the Galaxy" led with the most mentions at three, while "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Interstellar" and "Into the Woods" each got a pair. As previously announced, Oscar-winning make-up artist Rick Baker and Emmy-nominated hair stylist Kathryn Blondell will receive the Guild's Lifetime Achievement Awards. Matthew Weiner has been working on Are You Here, an ode to and examination of what he calls the “myth of male friendship,” for over a decade. He started writing the film between his first two years at The Sopranos, just around the point in his life when he started looking around and wondering where all his friends had gone.
It took Weiner nearly eight years to get the script to Owen Wilson, two breaks from Mad Men to shoot it, and two more seasons to edit and finish the film. But after showcasing an in-progress cut at the 2013 Toronto...

Treating themselves to a delicious meal, Jon Hamm met up with fellow Hollywood heartthrob Sean Penn at a WeHo eatery last night (November 13).
Joined by Sean’s kids Dylan and Hooper Penn, the handsome hunks seemed a bit annoyed as they encountered paparazzi upon their exit.
Meanwhile, it seems Jon has been forced to shave up to three times a day to maintain a smooth face while filming his hit show “Mad Men.”
Head make-up artist Lana Horochowski told press that Hamm’s facial hair is so fast-growing that 5 o’clock shadow is a constant problem. Add in Jon’s penchant for going commando and it sounds like he’s a pretty high-maintenance star!
