With the writers’ strike finally coming to an end, it strikes me that this may be a good opportunity to consider adjusting the process by which “Hollywood” evaluates what new films and TV shows should get the greenlight. Somehow in the ever-evolving pitch process, we seem to have replaced curiosity, collaboration and civility with a cool “show me what you got” attitude. It’s worth rethinking how to approach working with the creative community moving forward.

The monthly price of YouTube Premium has risen by $2 to $13.99, while the cost of YouTube Music is also going up $1 to $10.99.
The platforms initiated the changes for new subscribers without making an announcement, listing the new rates on the Premium website, with 9to5Google first to notice and report it.
Last year, family Premium plans increased to $22.99 a month and that rate appears not to have changed. An annual subscription plan announced last year is going up $20 to $139.99.
YouTube Premium enables viewers to watch videos without advertising and also offers access to the YouTube Music app. It launched in 2014 as Music Key, a venture involving major music labels looking for a new venue for music videos. It rebranded the following year as YouTube Red as the Alphabet video arm looked to join the streaming race with a raft of original shows. YouTube Red became YouTube Premium in 2018, with music streaming...

Kyncl will be succeeded by Mary Ellen Coe, currently the president of global customer solutions at Google, on Oct. 3.
“After 12 incredible years, I’ve decided to move on to the next challenge soon. Working alongside creators, artists, media and music companies to transform media has been a privilege,” Kyncl tweeted on Monday.
At YouTube, Kyncl helped lead the launch of the company’s paid subscription offering, YouTube Premium, as well as the company’s entry into original scripted and unscripted content, called YouTube Originals. There’s a new Global Head of YouTube Creators.
Kim Larson, a ten-year veteran at Google, will take over that role. In her new position, Larson will work with big and small creators within the YouTube ecosystem. In an email to Tubefilter, a YouTube representative explained that Larson will be responsible for “driving forward YouTube’s vision, direction and execution across the creator landscape.” She will report to Tara Walpert Levy, YouTube’s VP of Americas.
Like Walpert Levy, Larson has extensive experience on the advertising side of Google’s brand. As the tech giant’s Global Managing Director, Larson helped top brands execute their creative and media strategies on YouTube by providing them with intelligence, innovation, and consumer insights. Her work often required her to connect with YouTubers. She has led advertiser workshops for creators, and she helped set up the Google BrandLab at YouTube Space NY.

YouTube earlier this year wound down most of its originals division, in a significant pullback on its investment in scripted and unscripted programming.
But it’s not totally out of the game: YouTube is continuing to bulk up its slate of kids and family originals, as part of its previously announced 100 million fund earmarked for kids, family and educational content.
YouTube announced the greenlight of four new projects: “Mindful Adventures of Unicorn Island,” an animated series from Lilly Singh set to premiere in 2023; “The Big Tiny Food Face-Off” from B17 Entertainment; “Buster’s Big Halloween” from Moonbug Entertainment; and music series “Jam Van.”
YouTube also announced the Season 2 renewal of popular preschool series “Tab Time,” starring Tabitha Brown, an actress, vegan foodie and mother — aka “America’s mom.” Tabitha (or “Ms. Tab” as the kids call her) taps into her skills as a cook, storyteller, mom and motivational leader, to...

Susanne Daniels, the founding global head of YouTube Originals who has been with the company since 2016, is departing, effective March 1.
In a memo shared to Twitter, YouTube's chief business officer Robert Kyncl said that amid “rapid growth,” the company was redirecting original programming investment into other opportunities, such as the Creator Shorts Fund, its Black Voices Fund, and live shopping.

YouTube is getting out of the business of originals: The Google-owned video giant said it is winding down its original productions team after more than six years.
Earlier, news broke that Susanne Daniels, YouTube’s global head of original content, will leave the company in March. Going forward, YouTube will only be funding programs that are part of its Black Voices and YouTube Kids funds, chief business officer Robert Kyncl announced Tuesday.
Citing the growth of YouTube’s Partner Program for ad-revenue sharing — which now tops 2 million participants — Kyncl said “now our investments can make a greater impact on even more creators when applied towards other initiatives.”
“We will honor our commitment for already contracted shows in progress and creators who are involved with those shows should expect to hear from us directly in the coming days,” Kyncl wrote in the message posted to Twitter.

It’s hard to believe now, but it took until 1996 for the broadcast networks to finally hire their first-ever female entertainment president, when ABC recruited Jamie Tarses away from NBC to take the job. There had been a handful of other women in powerful slots, including Lucie Salhany, who was briefly chair of the Fox Broadcasting Co. before launching Upn. But until streaming upended the business, “entertainment president” was the most visible, and arguably the most important, leadership job at a network. And until Tarses, it had been all men.
Tarses’ rise at ABC coincided with the start of my career as a cub reporter, covering the network TV business in Los Angeles, and one of my first duties was to chronicle the tenure of the young trailblazer. But from the start, Tarses was faced with many in Hollywood looking to tear her down — be it rivals jealous of her age,...

David Blaine has landed safely and soundly from his latest live-tv stunt, “Ascension.”
The magician flew 24,900 feet above the Page, Arizona desert on a batch of 52 balloons, including one tech-heavy payload “balloon.” That special yellow sphere, complete with its own Hvac setup, made Blaine’s 50-foot-tall cluster of orbs an experimental aircraft — a legal designation he needed to do this thing.
To get the go-ahead, Blaine had to become a licensed hot-air balloon pilot. He had no basket for the actual stunt, just a harness.
When Blaine reached his insanely high cruising altitude, he strapped on a parachute and fell/floated back down to earth.
The stunt, which was recently moved from New York City to Arizona and delayed by a few days, was very reminiscent of 2009 Disney-Pixar animated movie “Up.” This morning’s launch was delayed a bit due to inclement weather. Blaine took off at 10:56 a.m.
