Hollywood embraces certain heroic brands time and time again. I think Dumas’ Three Musketeers (spoiler alert: there’s really four of them!) holds the record for movies most frequently adapted from a story. But another property has been capturing fans’ imaginations for over 100 years, and he’ll be swinging into theatres again this summer.
The Legend of Tarzan debuts July 1st. This movie stars Samuel L. Jackson, Margot Robbie and Alexander Skarsgard. Fans are hopeful. Of note, this movie opens with a “civilized” Tarzan in the city London. But the hardcore Tarzan and Edgar Rice Burroughs fans know there’s always something rumbling in the jungle.
In fact, I recently wrote about Tarzan: The Beckoning. Dark Horse is re-issuing the 80s miniseries by master artist Thomas Yeates. You can read my column here. But right now, I’d like to put on my metaphorical jungle pith helmet and explore...

It's not surprising that Disney let the rights to Edgar Rice Burroughs' classic sci-fi fantasy series John Carter of Mars lapse and revert back to the original owners, Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc. After all, the movie was a huge box office failure that reportedly resulted in a $200 million loss for the studio. That's a lot of freakin' money. It's really sad that this is how things turned out because the movie was actually really fun and well made. I would have loved to see the franchise continue, and now that it is back into the hands of the rightful owners, it looks like we might!
The company is planning to and bring the character back to the big screen. The president of Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc., James Sullos, said in a statement,

Two years after Disney's failed film adaptation of the first Edgar Rice Burrogh's "John Carter of Mars" hit cinemas, the film and TV rights to the property have reverted back to the late author's estate.
In a statement released by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., the company confirmed the reverstion and that they are "seeking a new studio to continue this seminal Sci-Fi adventure".
The 2012 film starred Taylor Kitsch as a former military captain inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes embroiled in a civil war. Critical reviews were mixed, the marketing campaign has been written about as one of the most disastrous in recent history, and domestic box-office was woeful with just $73 million.
Internationally it fared better with a further $211 million, but that still wasn't close to covering the film's enormous $250 million budget. As a result, Disney took a major write down on the film with the perceived failure leading...

There's no doubt that Disney had high-expectations for John Carter when they bestowed a hefty budget upon Andrew Stanton's 2010 sci-fi/adventure film. Now for most films earning nearly $300M at the worldwide box office would be deemed a success but the production budget was nearly as much as its earning. And remember, that's just the production costs. When all was said and done Disney said that the film cost them a whopping $200M. Geesh! That put the kibosh on any further tales of John Carter. Director Andrew Stanton was so oppomistic that he had title cards made for potential sequels: "Gods of Mars" and "Warlords of Mars." Now Disney has allowed the rights to John Carter to revert back to the Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc. and they plan to try once again to create a movie franchise out of the material. President of the Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc., James Sullos,...

Disney has lost the film rights to John Carter of Mars.
The property has reverted to Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc, which is already planning to find a new studio to bring the classic pulp property to the screen, reports Film Divider.
"We will be seeking a new partner to help develop new adventures on film as chronicled in the eleven Mars novels Burroughs wrote," said company president James Sullos. "This adventure never stops."
Disney shelved plans for sequels to its 2012 film John Carter after a disappointing performance at the box office.
Taylor Kitsch starred in Andrew Stanton's movie alongside Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton, Mark Strong and Dominic West.
Warner Bros is currently developing a film based on another classic Burroughs property, Tarzan.

Disney no longer has the rights to make John Carter movies and TV shows, as Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc seeks "a new partner".
And just when you thought the cinematic adventures of John Carter might be done and dusted, here comes an olive branch. Andrew Stanton's John Carter movie may well have cost a lot of money, and may not have made enough of it back to keep Disney happy, but it remains a film with no shortage of fans. Furthermore, Stanton had mapped out two further films, all based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs source material.
Yet the financial write-down that Disney took on the first John Carter film meant that plans for those follow-ups were abandoned. Bluntly, Disney had no intention of financing a John Carter 2. Andrew Stanton moved on to directing the Finding Nemo follow-up, Finding Dory.
As for John Carter? Film Divider is now reporting...

The Maine have fully unveiled a music video filmed to support their single "Inside of You". Directed by Mike Jones and Jim Sullos, the clip sees the band making a live performance inside a stark white room. Narrative scene which features a young boy is also included.
The Maine's new album "Black & White" which has been released in United States on July 13 is the one which features "Inside of You" on the tracklisting. The effort was recorded in California with Grammy-nominated producer Howard Benson (My Chemical Romance, The All-American Rejects).
With the new release, this band step out of their comfort zone and create a cohesive body of work. From unexpectedly dark pop gems like "Inside of You" to nostalgic summertime ballads like "Growing Up", each track on the album defies categorization yet still retains the signature sound that has endeared The Maine to fans around the world.
