- Survived a shooting on July 30, 1986 in Nashville, Tennessee
- Never did interviews. Whenever a reporter would contact him about doing an interview, Davis would reply that "all the answers to your questions can be found in my music.".
- 1977's album, Singer of Songs - Teller of Tales featured the ballad "I Go Crazy," which became his biggest hit, peaking at number seven a full eight months after its release. Its continuing appeal helped keep it in the Top 100 for 40 more weeks.
- Following a brief romantic relationship, country music artist Charly McClain had a song, "Best That Never Was", specially written and dedicated to Davis on her 1983 album "Paradise".
- When he wrote the song "I Go Crazy" he planned to give it to Lou Rawls to record. His record label boss nixed that. Years later Rawls recorded the song and also charted with it, this time in 1980.
- Davis was once married to Pamela Gayle Jay Davis, who enjoyed a brief career with Bang Records/Web IV Music in Atlanta, where he was writing and recording his songs. When their only son Jonathan was born with special needs, Pamela retired from the music world to care for him. She died on March 20, 2017.
- Davis was a member of a local group called the Six Soul Survivors around 1966 and later in another group called the Endless Chain.
- Davis died of a heart attack at the Rush Foundation Hospital in Meridian, Mississippi, on April 22, 2008, a day after his 60th birthday.
- Davis was an avid golfer, and was also an avid billiards enthusiast.
- His father was a preacher.
