“There’s a part of me that just likes letting rip and there’s an anarchic quality to me, which comes out in some characters,” declares Ruth Wilson about her latest iteration of an unhinged, deeply disturbed woman at the center of Showtime’s dark comedy-drama thriller “The Woman in the Wall.” For our recent webchat she adds about the nuances of portraying a character plagued by chronic sleepwalking that, “one of the things that appeal to me with this show was what she does in her sleep, and the idea of her subconscious coming out in her sleep and her real thoughts and feelings and actions being expressed in her sleep and her having no control over it, and her being scared of sleeping because of what she might do, I thought, that’s such a brilliant premise to set a character up,” she says. “The line between sleep and awake becomes very fine.

In one of our recent Wtf episodes, we covered the eye-gouging, eastern European-set filthy shenanigans of Eli Roth’s nicely messed up torture porn movie, Hostel. The film helped pave the way for the exploitation horror subgenre to thrive in the early 2000s, and followed a group of American tourists who get a lot more than they bargained for during a trip to the lovely picturesque country of Slovakia. Poor lads. All they wanted was some promiscuous sex with hot European ladies, but they weren’t counting on a shady organization dishing out decapitation and slit throats, as a side dish to the fornication. The movie, according to the tagline, was ‘based upon true events’ and whether or not you believe this claim, it’s nothing if not brutally demented in parts. So, like any other horror movie that manages to whip up a frenzy with critics and fans alike,...

Writer Shane Black pretty much invented the "buddy cop" movie with "Lethal Weapon," his gloriously violent Christmas-set action pic that introduced moviegoers to LAPD Detectives Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) and Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover). The basic set-up of the franchise, which was helmed entirely by Richard Donner: Murtaugh plays things by the book and is close to retirement (he somehow remains "close to retirement" through a series of four films). Riggs, in sharp contrast, is a trigger-happy psycho, suicidal in the wake of the death of his wife. These two mismatched cops become partners and, of course, friends. Also, they kill a lot of people. While this is one franchise that should probably finally retire (just like Murtaugh), there's a fifth film in the works.
But we're not here to talk about that. Instead, let's go back to the days when Mel Gibson sported a mullet and wasn't problematic!

Not to be confused with the similarly titled “The Woman on the Train” or “The Woman in the Window,” the gripping limited series “The Woman in the Wall” is finally making its U.S. debut after airing overseas last summer.
The gripping thriller, which will get a preview on Paramount+ Friday before officially premiering Sunday on Showtime, stars Golden Globe winner Ruth Wilson as Lorna Brady, a survivor of the Catholic Church-run Magdalene Laundries of Ireland whose daughter was taken from her as a teenager. Her lingering trauma as a result of the experience bleeds into every aspect of her adult life, leading to bouts of sleepwalking and intense paranoia. So when Lorna wakes up one morning to find a dead woman in her house and no recollection of who she is or how she got there, she assumes she’s responsible and quickly hides the body in the walls of her home.

The Woman in the Wall, which dropped its first episode on Paramount+ Friday, tells the fictional story of a fictional woman played by The Affair‘s Ruth Wilson. But there’s one element of the show that’s very real, and that’s the unsavory history of Ireland’s Magdalene Laundries.
Friday’s series premiere — which will have its linear debut on Paramount+ With Showtime (formerly known as Showtime) on Sunday at 9/8c — talks obliquely about the Magdalene Laundries and the years of abuse they facilitated, but there’s no formal explanation of what they were. From the 18th to 20th centuries,...

Not only has the start of production on The Lincoln Lawyer Season 3 (in Los Angeles) revealed that Neve Campbell will be back, but we also have a few more details about what to expect when the Netflix drama returns. Manuel Garcia-Rulfo will, of course, be back as Mickey Haller. Also reprising their roles are Becki Newton (Lorna), Jazz Raycole (Izzy), Angus Sampson (Cisco), and Yaya DaCosta (Andrea Freemann). Also recurring alongside Campbell are Elliott Gould, Krista Warner, Fiona Rene, and Devon Graye. No one sleeps easily in Showtime‘s provocative six-part Irish mystery The Woman in the Wall — especially not Lorna (the mesmerizing Ruth Wilson of Luther and The Affair fame), whose sleepwalking antics have made her something of a pariah in her small town. We first see Lorna as she awakens in the middle of a country road, and even when she’s fully conscious, she appears to be in a state of perpetual disorientation. Lorna’s unstable state is further rattled when she receives a note saying someone has information about her daughter, who was taken from her 30 years ago (declared dead) in a notorious convent and workhouse for unwed girls, a trauma from which she has never fully recovered. A pending class-action lawsuit against these cruel “mother and baby homes” provides a backdrop to Lorna’s ordeal, which only intensifies when she awakens from one of her spells and...

Upon his arrival in the remote Irish town of Kilkinure, detective Colman (Daryl McCormack) cannot help but ask about the hairbrushes he keeps seeing in the windowsills. Massey (Simon Delaney), a local guard, explains they’re meant to ward off the banshee rumored to stalk the area. It’s not that the citizens necessarily believe in spirits, he clarifies: “Doesn’t mean we’re not afraid of them, though.”
But then, this community has more reason than most to fear the wails of mourning women. Showtime’s The Woman in the Wall (which aired on BBC One in the U.K. starting in August) isn’t a ghost story per se, but it’s the tale of a haunting nonetheless — rooted in the very real atrocity of the country’s Catholic-run Magdalene laundries, to harrowing and ultimately quite moving effect.

In 1866, Gustave Courbet painted The Origin of the World, a portrait of a woman’s nude torso and exposed vagina that still possesses the capacity to shock the straitlaced. On one level, the painting proves pretty definitively that there’s a fine line between a timeless work of art and a beaver shot. On another, it provides a convenient precursor for the cinematic sensibility of Spanish maverick Jess Franco, who seemingly never met a pussy he didn’t want to zoom unabashedly in on. This holds especially true for Lorna the Exorcist, wherein the female genitalia play a significant thematic as well as aesthetic role.
For what it’s worth, the film bears only the slightest passing resemblance to the William Friedkin classic that it’s ostensibly ripping off. Both films focus on a character located on the cusp between childhood and womanhood (though here she’s a bit of...

What if a comic book came to life? Not a superhero comic, but one filled with creepy stories that leave nothing to the imagination when it comes to the gory stuff as well. The new show Creepshow has two distinct stories in each episode. The show creates a live-action version of the comic book of the same name. The stories are sometimes just plain scary, having a supernatural element; other times there are monsters and vampires dealing with normal people in an absurdly comical way. Humor and some clever writing make this show a fun watch, and the episodes bring up socio-political themes as well, interweaving them within the interpersonal conflicts of the characters. The first episode has two smaller ones, which are not connected to each other. The first mini-episode, titled 20 Minutes with Cassandra, features a rat-monster with an interesting backstory, and the next mini-episode, Smile, delivers good old...
