Dawn Porter and Nicole Newnham’s four-part docuseries “37 Words,” debuting June 21 on ESPN, celebrates the 50th anniversary of Title IX while also exploring the current struggle to maintain and evolve the 1972 law that forbids discrimination based on gender.
Prior to 1972, gender discrimination was commonplace in education and athletics. Physical activity for girls and women was cast as unfeminine, and while schools poured money and other resources into programs for male students, budding female athletes were left to fend for themselves. That all changed when Congress passed Title IX – a 37-word amendment — on June 23 that year.
“37 Words” marks the latest piece of programming in ESPN’s month-long “Fifty/50” initiative to commemorate the landmark federal civil-rights law prohibiting sex-based discrimination in any educational institution that receives federal funding. ‘Lfg’ Review: Bring Out the Vuvuzelas as the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team Takes on Its Employer
A handful of players from the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team riff on what the letters Lfg — their rallying cry — stand for exactly. The flow of close-ups in the winning and timely doc “Lfg,” from Jennifer McDonald to Samantha Mewis to Kelley O’Hara to Megan Rapinoe to Becky Sauerbrunn, has the feel of a pre-match kick around. Only, for all their ease, there’s also a focus that epitomizes the four-time World Cup victors.

With three World Cup championships and four Olympic gold-medal wins under their belts, the U.S. women could make history again, becoming the first country ever to win Olympic gold while holding the title of world champions, which the U.S. claimed by winning the 2015 World Cup. Although the Opening Ceremony isn't happening until Friday, Olympic play has already kicked off - literally - this week in Rio, after the U.S. women defeated New Zealand 2-0 Wednesday night as the crowd booed goalie Hope Solo. Looking for a crash course in U.S. women's soccer now that play is underway?...

Oh, Drake. Just another celeb who has the hots for an athlete. Actually, in seemingly taking it to the next level with Serena Williams, Drake has made a play for one of the all-time greatest athletes—so there he goes, being the best at something, yet again. He also happens to be entering relatively uncharted territory, because nearly all the smokin' hot celebrity-athlete couples out there consist of a female celeb and a male sportsman, one exception being sport-on-sport (though that's not really the same either), such as now-retired soccer stud Mia Hamm and her hubby, now-retired Mlb star Nomar Garciaparra. Another exception: Serena Williams dating Common years ago. That sounds as though it...

She’s best-known for her runway prowess, but it turns out Lily Aldridge is quite the athletics enthusiast as well.
The 29-year-old Victoria’s Secret Angel is featured on the front of the July 2015 issue of Self magazine and in her cover story she admits, “I always thought I was going to be a soccer player, get a scholarship to college and then join the U.S. women’s team. Mia Hamm was my role model. I still look up to her.”
And it sounds like Lily had a blast doing the Self magazine photo session- “This was one of the most fun shoots I’ve had. It’s different for me to get to be athletic and look like the strong woman I am. I was so sore the next day, I could barely walk. I realized I have to do more cardio!”...

Harper Beckham is already following in her dad's footsteps! The 3-year-old tot seems to have picked up some soccer skills, and her proud papa took to Instagram to brag about his little girl. In the pic, the pint-sized athlete is ready to kick the ball into the open soccer net. "Mia Hamm eat your heart out," Beckham captioned the action shot. (Mia Hamm, of course, is the legendary Us women's soccer player.) Harper’s mom, Victoria Beckham, is at the helm of a fashion empire, but it seems like her daughter wants to focus on sports instead. "Harper loves football," she told reporters at an event for her latest collection. "It’s like a dagger going into my heart!" "She’s got little shoes and a little football shirt and she runs around in the garden with her brothers," she added, referring to Brooklyn, 16, Romeo, 12, and Cruz. 10. Looking absolutely adorable in a sporty braid and pink soccer cleats, the toddler prepares to kick the ball into the net. Harper Beckham proved that she's definitely a daddy's girl when she got down and dirty on the soccer field on Friday. David posted the cute photo to Instagram on June 5 of his daughter kicking a ball into the goal. Harper is seen rocking a long braid, shorts, and little pair of pink soccer cleats. David captioned the picture, "Mia Hamm eat your heart out. Harper Seven taking lessons from her brothers ( oh and her dad )," alongside two soccer ball and one heart emoji. The comments section of the photo also didn't disappoint, with fans posting enthusiastic messages for little Harper, including, "You go girl," and, "This is awesome." This isn't the first time David has shared sweet moments with his little girl via Instagram. Just last month he posted a snap of Harper fixing his hair to make him "feel pretty" after his big birthday bash. He also shared a...

Jimmy Fallon is pretty good at this Box of Lies game, but ScarJo is better when it counts. (Watching this is actually a lot like watching a surreal, nightmarish version of one of those old Michael Jordan–Mia Hamm Gatorade commercials.) Also, for what it's worth, ScarJo did end up with the magic Starbucks beans — fate was on her side the whole time.

She’s one of the most-admired models in the world today, but Lily Aldridge wasn’t always the fashion idol that we see on the runway. In a new interview with Vogue magazine, the Victoria’s Secret stunner confesses that her style palette was developed over the course of decades.
Lily explains, “I grew up in the Valley in California. I was so into playing with clothes, dressing up, being girly, but around kindergarten, I became a tomboy. If you’re female, out of college, great at soccer, and your name isn’t Mia Hamm, you didn’t have a lot of options to pursue a financially stable career as a profesional athlete before 2009. That’s the year Women’s Professional Soccer was established. It’s the league at the top of the Us Women’s Soccer Pyramid with six actives teams all on or near the Easter seaboard (in George, Massachusetts, Florida, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York) and average player salaries of at least $32,000 a year. That’s not a ton of cash, but a decent wage for seven months a year worth of playing a game you presumably very much enjoy. Plus, players have the opportunity to make money on the side through marketing and appearances. Players like Amy Rodriguez of the Philadelphia Independence, Alex Scott of the Boston Breakers, Karina LeBlanc of the Philadelphia Independence,...

For 20 years, Glamour has honored women in the entertainment and sports field as its Women of the Year. To celebrate the 20th anniversary, the stars shined in New York City.
We love Fergie's one-shoulder va-va-va-voom red dress -- and of course, Ms. Julia Roberts always looks gorgeous. But holy hell, Kyra Sedgwick! We knew you were beautiful, but dayum! Rockin' a pink number like it ain't no thang.
"Mad Men's" Peggy Olson ... er, Elisabeth Moss sure is all grown up in her blue cocktail number and we thought skier Lindsay Vonn cut a lovely figure in a black evening gown. Other women at the event included soccer star Mia Hamm, Wnba player Lisa Leslie, Arianna Huffington, Sherri Shepherd, Alexa Ray Joel, Anna Chlumsky, Kelly Osbourne and Janet Jackson.
