Filmmaker Amanda Gusack burst onto the horror scene a couple of years ago with her indie flick In Memorium, and even then it was pretty easy to see that she was someone who had great things ahead of her. Good thing for us they're delightfully dark!
Deadline is reporting that Screen Gems has bought the thriller spec The Unsacred by Gusack. The label is keeping the logline under wraps, but the site reports that it's sort of like The Possession meets The Haunting In Connecticut.
Peter and Alan Riche are producing, and Scott Strauss is the exec. Stay tuned for more on this one as we get it.

Exclusive: Screen Gems has bought the thriller spec The Unsacred by Amanda Gusack. The label is keeping the logline under wraps, but I’m told it’s The Possession meets The Haunting In Connecticut. So it sounds like a small budget film with a good chance to scare up an opening weekend. Peter and Alan Riche are producing and Scott Strauss is the exec. Paradigm and Stone Meyer Genow rep the scribe.

Written and directed by Amanda Gusack, In Memorium spent years in development and finally, after successful test views of the first fifteen minutes, the atmospheric film is now available for download on IndieFlix.com. Official Synopsis: “Two months after being diagnosed with terminal cancer, Dennis Wade, a struggling filmmaker, decides to document his illness. Still free from symptoms, he and his girlfriend, Lily, sublet a house and install motion-triggered security cameras throughout. Two days later…the cameras capture something unsettling: Noises and movement in empty rooms. The next morning, Dennis’ cancer begins to advance at an inexplicable rate. As Dennis worsens by the day, he and Lily discover the horrific source of the disturbances. With his time running out, they must make a decision: Leave the house and save her life…or stay…and save his.” Source: http://www.dreadcentral.com Related Posts:Pang Ho-cheung’s Dream House Brings Nightmare Neighbors...

One haunted flick we've been curious about for a while now has been Amanda Gusack's cinéma-vérité style spooker, In Memorium. Finally, after years in development and a successful online viewing of the film's first sixteen minutes, the whole enchilada is available for public consumption.
Written and directed by Gusack, produced by Lydia Cedrone and Meredith Freeman, and starring Erik McDowell, Johanna Watts, Levi Powell, and Mary Portser, In Memorium is streaming right now on IndieFlix.com.
Inspired in part by The Blair Witch Project, In Memorium centers on a struggling filmmaker who rents a house with his girlfriend to document his final days after a diagnosis of terminal cancer. He installs motion-triggered security cameras in every room to capture their lives without invasion. But an invasion of a different sort is captured on the footage--an inexplicable presence in the house. Immediately afterward, things become terrifying.

In 2005, there was a film called In Memorium which was produced on a microscopic budget using the found-footage technique that Paranormal Activity is known for. Of course a horror film using this technique isn't anything new, but couple that with a similar plot where a couple installs motion sensitive video cameras in their home and captures a "paranormal activity" and you basically get the exact same movie.
Except this movie was developed by Amanda Gusack and was actually shown couple years ago before Pa but was shelved after not being able to find a buyer. Now, with the success of Pa, the filmmakers are releasing the film on IndieFlix.com.

Back in 2005, director Amanda Gusack (The Betrayed) put together a horror film called "In Memorium" on a tiny budget. The film appeared at several film festivals, where it garnered critical praise, but the filmmakers opted to shelve it after failing to find an offer that would cover their selling costs. Now thanks to the popularity of "Paranormal Activity," the movie has become in high-demand, despite the fact that "Paranormal" is considered a rip-off of "In Memorium" and not the other way around. To get the film to the public, the filmmakers have decided to release the movie independently later this year through a paid 30-day-rental stream on IndieFlix. To get people excited, a 16-minute opening scene has appeared on the official website. The clip will stay on there all day Halloween (October 31st) and will then be swapped out for the release date. I (Alex) had a chance to see...

Once upon a time, long, long ago and very far away, it was a dark and stormy night. An aspiring filmmaker (Amanda Gusack) who started out working for craft services and had seen The Blair Witch Project and maybe some Japanese horror stuff, sprouted her own movie idea. But even though she got her film made, it premiered at the Hamptons Film Festival and was well received both critically and by audiences, distribution was never obtained. Everybody sigh and say, "bummer." But wait! It's almost Halloween, a time of resurrection, rebirth and renewal. Or maybe that's Easter -- I can't keep up with all the holiday meanings. Whatever it signifies, Halloween shall bring this film new life. Never mind November 2nd; this Halloween, we the people can bring about real change. You've heard the horror stories from both sides -- this group is going to ruin the country; that group...

The success of the Paranormal Activity franchise has done a lot of good for not only our genre but for the indie filmmakers working within it. Case in point - Amanda Gusack's cinéma-vérité style spooker, In Memorium.
The project has been literally in limbo for the past five years, but now as a means to re-ignite the promotional flames, you'll be able to watch the first sixteen minutes of the movie over on InMemoriumTheMovie.com all day this coming Halloween!
"Upon Paranormal Activity’S release in 2009, whispers on internet message boards birthed comparisons to an earlier docu-horror—a 2005 microbudget film, entitled In Memorium. John Cooper of atomicpopcorn described it as a “creepy horror film with great jump scares, standing toe-to-toe with Paranormal Activity and knocking that film off its feet.”

On Saturday Feb 21, 2010, author Maura McHugh, aka 'Splinister', wrote a blog post entitled 'SFX forgets women in horror', and the result has been nothing short of huge.
McHugh's article noted that out of 34 horror industry professionals interviewed for an important article in the U.K. SFX Magazine Issue # 192 about their favorite horror movies and books, not one was a woman. Of all their answers, she further points out, only one recommended the work of a woman...
SFX Magazine may not have immediately heeded one woman's intelligent argument that they either deliberately, or negligently, underrepresented women in the magazine, but the UK Guardian and feminist blog The F Word both picked up on it and made the discrepency a news topic that SFX editor Ian Berriman couldn't possibly ignore.

Writer/director Amanda Gusack’s dramatic 2005 supernatural outing “In Memorium” has the unfortunate distinction of being mentioned in the same breathe as Oren Peli’s grossly overhyped indie hit “Paranormal Activity,” a fact which thrills her to no end, I’m sure. Truthfully, there are very few similarities between the two productions: both films feature an attractive young couple as main characters, and both utilize amateur video footage to tell their respective stories. Beyond that, these two projects have absolutely nothing in common whatsoever. The methods might seem congruent at first, but their destinations couldn’t be more different. The proof, as they say, is in the pudding. Beneath “In Memorium’s” faux-documentary veneer beats the heart of a gothic ghost story, a dreary, depressing tale that achieves much more than simple scares and frights. Gusack — who recently helmed the 2008 direct-to-video slasher “Betrayed” — deftly mines the depths of human misery...

I recently sat down and watched Amanda Gusack’s In Memorium, and found it to be just as enjoyable as Oren Peli’s smash success Paranormal Activity. You can read my review of the film right here. I also had the chance to briefly interview the screenwriter/director about the state of In Memorium and the possibilities for a wider release on DVD. Check out the interview below!
John: First of all, I just want to say that I really enjoyed In Memorium — a lot more than some big budget horror films I’ve seen in theaters recently. What you’ve accomplished under immense constraint is pretty remarkable.
Amanda: Thanks so much!
Why the paranormal? Why ghosts? What took you toward this subject material?
There’s so much in our minds that we don’t understand. I believe we all carry around a level of fear based on the fact that,...

Is it possible to hold a film like Amanda Gusack’s In Memorium in a truly objective, critical light after seeing Oren Peli’s Paranormal Activity? I would have to say probably not, considering that’s the first question I asked myself when sitting down to write this.
But here’s the thing: In Memorium, a haunting film that spans only a little over an hour, shot on a minuscule budget and released in 2005 to only a few film festivals and audiences, contains many of the elements that Paranormal Activity hinges upon. In fact, the main arc of the narrative is exactly the same: couple moves into house, sets up cameras to record paranormal activities, proceed to be haunted and scared to death. It begs the question of whether Peli was seated at one of those festivals, watching the show go on.
That said, In Memorium certainly has a leg...

Before Paranormal Activity caused such a stir, Amanda Gusack directed the indie ghost story In Memorium, which is only now recieving its dues. Gusack more recently directed the higher-budget horror/thriller The Betrayed, which stars Melissa George and is available on DVD.

With the success of Paranormal Activity , you can expect to hear about another dozen or so similar projects. Just this morning, we did a news post on a UK project titled The Possession of David O'Reilly , which bares a resemblance to Oren Peli's sleeper hit. Ever heard of In Memorium ? The low-budget indie pic starring Erik McDowell, Johanna Watts, Levi Powell and Mary Portser dates back to 2005, a few years before Paranormal Activity . Written and directed by Amanda Gusack, this cinéma vérité film follows Dennis Wade, a young film student diagnosed with terminal cancer who decides to document his illness only to capture something else on tape. Have a peek at the teaser trailer below. Gusack recently directed The Betrayed starring Melissa George and...

Apparently shooting scenes around the house with a home videocamera and calling it a horror movie in the guise of a faux documentary is not so original after all, though Paramount Pictures and director Oren Peli probably would like you to keep thinking it is. Not so much, as it turns out. Director Amanda Gusack wrote and directed a little 2005 movie called “In Memorium” that uses the same faux documentary style as “Activity”, though the two film’s plots are admittedly different enough to be original works that just happens to share a similar shooting gimmick. Gusack’s “In Memorium” played the festival circuit, but never found itself a distributor. That might change after this week, thanks to some pro-active work by Gusack to get her movie out there. Obviously yeah, Gusack is hoping to ride the coattails of “Paranormal Activity”, not that there’s anything wrong with that. On...

Director Amanda Gusack gave us the horror film The Betrayed last year, which starred Melissa George (The Amityville Horror) and Oded Fehr (The Mummy, Resident Evil: Apocalypse) in a tale of psychological deception.
Before that film, though, she made a microbudget film called In Memorium that folks are now likening to Oren Peli’s spontaneous success Paranormal Activity. The film premiered at the Hamptons Film Festival in 2005, but has still not seen a release.
Now, with the success of Paranormal Activity, the film is starting to see the light of day through some clips that display a film very similar to Paranormal Activity’s style. Check them out below, and hopefully we’ll have a review of the film up soon enough, so if you have a craving for more Paranormal Activity-esque scares, you might just have an outlet for them!

The low-cost spooker Paranormal Activity has proven to be quite a phenomenon. And while I haven't had a chance to see it yet myself, I couldn't help but notice it seems to bear some resemblance to a movie I did see several years ago -- another little household horror indie called In Memorium. Made in 2005 by filmmaker Amanda Gusack (who went on to MGM's recent DVD thriller The Betrayed, starring Melissa George and Oded Fehr), In Memorium also took the Diy approach to the premise of capturing...

In Memorium, Amanda Gusack’s previous horror film, was a well-shot and amazing venture into psychological horror. Her much bigger budgeted follow up, The Betrayed, is a thriller starring Melissa George which is unfortunately less touching and novel than In Memorium. Starting out with a Saw-like situation in which mom Jamie wakes up after a car accident to find herself locked in a dungeon-y basement room somewhere, Jamie is then forced by her captors to answer a series of questions about her husband to which she doesn’t know the answers, or her and her son Michael will be killed...

It’s rare that a film can be considered good when it takes place in basically only one room. This isn’t one of those times…it’s just rare. The Betrayed is a thriller, but it’s terribly hard to be thrilled when you can see every angle of the room at all times. The door that separates our girl from our villains is made of glass, so you can always see someone coming. Of course, because of lighting you see the person’s larger-then-life shadow approaching a few moments ahead. Which can be scary. It wasn’t here, but again…just mentioning.
Some productions have done the one room thing well. 12 Angry Men was a movie that was interesting from beginning to end and it took place in a jury room. A special episode of the big 90s show Homicide: Life on the Street took place entirely in...
