Matteo Garrone’s Oscar-nominated drama “Io Capitano,” about the odyssey of two young African men who decide to leave Dakar to reach Europe, and Paola Cortellesi’s feminist dramedy “There’s Still Tomorrow” were both the big winners at Italy’s 69th David di Donatello Awards.
“Io Capitano” won Davids for best picture, director, producers, editor, and cinematographer, among other prizes, while “Still Tomorrow,” which is about the plight of an abused housewife in post-war Rome and had 19 nominations scored six statuettes, including best directorial debut, actress, non supporting actress, screenplay, and audience award.
“Still Tomorrow,” which marks the directorial debut of popular Italian actor Paola Cortellesi, who also stars, is shot in black-and-white and riffs on Italy’s neorealist past, albeit with a contemporary female empowerment angle.
“I made this debut at the brink of menopause,” Cortellesi, who is 50, said while accepting the statuette for best debuting director. “I hope...

In the early 1970s, Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan wrote and recorded songs for the English version of Italian director Franco Zeffirelli’s film “Brother Sun, Sister Moon,” about the early years of St. Francis of Assisi, that evoked the “flower power” hippie movement and developed a cult following.
Half a century later, Donovan traveled to Italy last week to watch a freshly restored version of the film in two celebratory events. The first was an intimate private screening held in Rome’s Quirinale Palace for Italian President Sergio Mattarella and a select group of officials, and the next was in Florence, the late Zeffirelli’s birthplace, where the Zeffirelli Foundation held a free screening open to the public attended by a copious contingent of Franciscan monks.
Donovan, who was born in Glasgow, emerged on the U.K. folk scene in 1965. He broke out the following year with the album “Sunshine Superman,...

Rome, May 25 (Ians) Inter Milan retained their Coppa Italia title on Wednesday, collecting their ninth trophy in a 2-1 rally against Fiorentina with Lautaro Martinez netting a brace.
Inter defeated Juventus in last year’s final, clinching their first Coppa Italia trophy since 2011. The last time Fiorentina seized this competition was in 2001. Representatives from both teams had the honour of meeting President Sergio Mattarella at the Quirinal Palace in Rome on the eve of the final.
Fiorentina started the match in the best possible way, taking the lead just three minutes into the game when Jonathan Ikone’s precise pass found Nico Gonzalez, who tapped it in at the back post, reports Xinhua.
Edin Dzeko had a golden opportunity to level the score in the 25th minute when he was sent clear by Lautaro, but the Bosnian’s shot soared over the bar.

Thousands gathered in the streets of London to pay their respects to Queen Elizabeth II at her funeral on Sept. 19. Among the mournful crowd were a few famous faces, including none other than "Grey's Anatomy" alum Sandra Oh, who followed behind the queen's casket as it was transported from the state funeral service at Westminster Abbey to St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle for a committal service. Surrounded by royal family members and world leaders, Oh's appearance at the funeral caught the internet off guard, but the "Princess Diaries" star had good reason to secure an invitation to the queen's funeral.

Killing Eve star Sandra Oh has been spotted at Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, one of very few TV personalities to be invited.
Oh was seen in the past couple of hours or so and Twitter has been abuzz with the arrival of the Grey’s Anatomy star.
Oh was appointed an Order of Canada as an Officer a few months ago and was dressed in black with a Canadian badge pinned in front, according to the BBC.
Queen Elizabeth II’s State Funeral – A Photo Gallery
The honor is the second highest that can be received in Canada, a Commonwealth country, and Oh was granted it due to an “artistic career filled with memorable stage, television and film roles in Canada and abroad”. She played Dr Cristina Yang in Grey’s Anatomy for a decade, winning a stack of awards, and has more recently been lauded for her role as Eve in Killing Eve.

President Joe Biden has arrived in London, where he will join other world leaders at the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II on Monday.
The prime ministers of Canada, Australia and New Zealand are already in the UK for the ceremony, but the guest list for the funeral of the world’s longest-reigning monarch is proving to be controversial.
While many of the 500 names of heads of state and foreign dignitaries are as expected – French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Germany’s Frank-Walter Steinmeier all due to attend – there are some names that have caused a diplomatic headache.
Representatives from Russia, Belarus, Myanmar, Syria, Venezuela and Afghanistan have not been invited, while Iran, North Korea (Dprk) and Nicaragua have only been invited to send ambassadors instead of heads of state.
China’s President Xi Jinping was invited, but it will be his Vice President Wang Qishan who attends in his place.

At the Venice Film Festival, the masks stay on, even during the standing ovation.
At least that became protocol during the festival’s opening night movie, “Parallel Mothers,” on Wednesday night in Italy.
Director Pedro Almodóvar and his muse Penelope Cruz didn’t so much as touch their face coverings during an enthusiastic five-minute standing ovation at the historic Sala Grande for the Spanish film.
As soon as the credits rolled, Cruz leaned over and clutched Almodóvar’s arm in a gesture of affection. And Cruz seemed to look teary-eyed at one point at the crowd’s enthusiastic reception for the film.
The 78th annual Venice Film Festival kicked off with some changes, having already established itself as the biggest film gathering in the world in 2020 during the earlier days of the Covid-19 pandemic. This year, the festival continued adhering to strict rules, including requiring proof of vaccination from attendees...

The 78th Venice Film Festival opened on Wednesday with the world premiere of Pedro Almodóvar’s “Parallel Mothers,” starring Penélope Cruz and Milena Smit, who strutted down the walled-in red carpet alongside other top talent, and Italy’s president, Sergio Mattarella.
Venice has been forced to place a wall-like outer barrier shielding the long catwalk entirely, in order to avoid close-knit crowds. But that did not diminish the balmy evening’s glamorous mood, pervaded with a spirit of restart.
Jury president Bong Joon Ho, after taking the stage, said, “We all believe the Corona Covid [crisis] will be over soon, yet the cinema will remain with us forever.”
The ceremony was hosted by Italian actor and singer Serena Rossi, who in her opening speech paid tribute to the crisis in Afghanistan.
“My thoughts to Afghan mothers, to those skinny arms on the barbed wire; to mothers ready with an extreme gesture to separate from their children,...

The 78th Venice Film Festival gets underway Wednesday with a slew of Hollywood stars expected on the red carpet for the Sept. 1-11 event, beginning with Penelope Cruz for Pedro Almodovar’s opening film “Parallel Mothers,” in competition, and Isabelle Huppert for French drama “Promises,” which opens the fest’s more cutting-edge Horizons section.
They will soon be followed by the creative teams and key cast “of all the films,” said artistic director Alberto Barbera speaking to Variety. He pointed out that Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya and the “entire 10-member cast” of Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” reboot are headed to the Lido.
“This year, there is a quantity of talents coming, especially from the U.S., that is really impressive,” Barbera added, underlining that “the Americans are out in full force.”
The only major U.S. actor who won’t be coming is Adam Driver, who stars in Ridley Scott’s medieval epic “The Last Duel,...
