Nenette et Boni
Written by Claire Denis and Jean-Pol Fargeau
Directed by Claire Denis
France, 1996
A more urban escapade for Denis, Nenette et Boni looks at two conflicted siblings searching for normality in one another. Boni, an over-sexualized and underachieving pizza maker lives a remarkably uneventful life, lusting over the local baker-lady and chronically masturbating. It’s only when his estranged sister Nenette shows up with a devastating secret that Boni begins to question the validity of his lifestyle and decisions.
The plot is focused on the burgeoning relationship between the siblings, but it’s undeniable that Denis shot this film with the intention of painting a picture of everyday people. Being a slice-of-life movie helps illustrate the commonality of the siblings’ issues, more or less so as to get across that everyone encounters similar problems. The film is shot well and is full of visual metaphors that do more...

Kim revealed that she and Kanye may not choose a baby name that starts with K, even though it is a tradition in her family! She also didn’t debunk the report that they want to name their baby North — read on for more of her interview!
Kim Kardashian comes from a family full of K names, but even though she and Kanye West both have names that start with the letter, she revealed in a new interview with Extra that she and her baby daddy might stray from tradition — and name their baby something that doesn’t start with K!
Although it would make the most sense for Kim and Kanye to choose a baby name that starts with the same letter as their own, the parents-to-be might go the route of many famous couples, and name their baby something out-of-the-box!
“I think it would be really cute cause...

Oscar might be the word of the day, but for some folks, their own names were what rung loudest and proudest during this morning's 2013 Academy Award nominations read-out. Sure, some of them were just as baffled by some of the snubs as the vociferous folks of the Twitterverse, but they couldn't complain too much because, hey, they just got a chance at the most elite prize in the biz.
So, in the day's spirit of actors and such talking about actors and such, we've gathered here the nominees' various reactions to this year's nods. You can probably read between the lines on a few of these.
Best Actresses
Jennifer Lawrence, "Silver Linings Playbook": "I'm so honored and grateful for this nomination and to be in the company of such talented actresses. Having the fortunate opportunity to work with David O. Russell was an extraordinary gift and I am so...

Gossip Girl here…just kidding! But Gossip Girl‘s Ed Westwick, Leighton Meester, and Penn Badgley were all over New York Fashion Week showing off their threads and sharing the mania, competition, and definite fashion don’ts with VH1. “There’s lots of music pumping in rooms you can’t get in to and then you find the free bar and you drink free drinks,” Penn revealed. While Penn chased the booze and bass, Ed compared backstage to Charlie and The Chocolate Factory as the rooms seem to get smaller while more and more fashionistas and fashionisters pack themselves in.

Even though the 'Extra' host looks good in a two-piece doesn't mean she wanted to strip down in the cold New York weather! Maria Menounos told Hollywoodlife.com exclusively at QVC's New York Fashion Week Runway Show on Feb. 8 that she really did not want to bare all in Times Square on the Monday after Super Bowl Xlvi. Unfortunately, her boss made her follow through after she lost the bet that she made with Extra correspondent A.J. Calloway over who would win the big game. "I begged and pleaded not to do it," she says. At the time she was still in Indianapolis covering the game, and she told him she didn't have any clothes for the weather in New York. "He said, 'You won't need clothes,'" Maria adds. At least you stay true to your word and you looked great doing it, Maria! --Giovanna Pagliarulo More Celebs Bare...

The late Neeraj Grover’s parents are upset with Ramgopal Varma, whose next movie is about the brutal murder of their son
A few years ago, 25 year old Neeraj Grover, creative head of a TV company, was ruthlessly stabbed and ‘disposed off’ by his ‘friend’ Maria Susairaj and her lover, Emile Jerome. Director Ram Gopal Verma (of Company 20o2 fame) picked this sensational murder case as the subject of his next film. He even went ahead and chose and apartment from the same building where Grover was killed as the location of his film ‘Not A Love Story’. However, the bereaved parents of Grover are shocked with the filmmaker’s attempt to exploit their sadness and vend money out of it.

Hereafter (Warner Bros.) Clint Eastwood’s spiritual thriller follows a trio of characters whose seemingly disparate paths converge: Matt Damon as a blue collar Joe who tries to fight against his psychic powers that see “the other side,” Cecile de France as a journalist who somehow survives the tsunami that crushed Indonesia, and a London schoolboy (Frankie and George McLaren) who seeks answers after losing his twin brother. Like all of Eastwood’s films, the narrative construction is tight as a drum, with solid work by all involved. That said, “solid” would have to be the operative word to describe the proceedings here, as well as “unremarkable” and “uninvolving” on an emotional level. Perhaps we expect too much when we see Clint’s name on a film these days, but that’s the flip side of being one of the best. Blu-ray/DVD combo pack.

John Wells has been in the entertainment business longer than most, producing critically-acclaimed television (ER) and film (One Hour Photo, Far From Heaven) for over two decades. His first feature, The Company Men, was one of the first films to make waves at Sundance 2010, picked up by The Weinstein Company, and is finally seeing a limited release this Friday.
Tfs talked to the filmmaker about the long road traveled to the film’s release, the current struggles of making independent films in today’s economic climate, the pleasure of working with master cinematographer Roger Deakins and never assuming you’ll eat out for lunch.
Tfs: It’s been a year since Sundance. How’s the ride been?
John Wells: It’s been interesting, you know, the Weinstein’s picked it up although we negotiated for about two or three months. And then they wanted us to test the film...

Meet the sinful Italian cousin to the doughnut: the grispelle. Author of My Calabria, Rosetta Costantino shares the recipe for this delicious dessert.
Born and raised in the town of Verbicaro in Calabria, Italy, Rosetta Costantino moved to California with her parents at age 14. She earned a chemical engineering degree at the University of California, Berkeley, and spent 20 years working in Silicon Valley. Now, often assisted by her mother, Maria, she shares the techniques and tastes of the traditional Calabrian kitchen in her popular cooking classes. From her new book My Calabria, Rosetta Costantino shares memories and recipes from her family's kitchen at Christmas time:
Whenever Calabrians have a square meter of bare ground, they plant a garden. The typical Calabrian orto, or home garden, is a bountiful jungle of eggplant, peppers, potatoes, red onions, green beans, tomatoes, and zucchini in summer. Hard-shelled squash and borlotti beans overtake the orto in fall.

In this treasure chest of lyrics and essays, Stephen Sondheim appraises his own work with eye‑widening honesty
One of the hundreds of photographs accompanying his Collected Lyrics shows Stephen Sondheim at the piano in a publishing house sporting a fedora and a faintly rumpled expression. Looking like a cross between Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau – the innocence and experience of American movies – he's actually acting in June Moon, a 1974 TV film of a play about a Tin Pan Alley composer. Although his screen performances have been extremely rare, character has been the driving force in the career of one of the key figures in 20th-century theatre.
Lyricists tend to be good phrase makers and Sondheim has made his fair share. "The ladies who lunch" was coined as the sung title of a song of galvanising self-disgust written for Elaine Stritch's uber-sardonic Joanne in Company. And before that, there...

But when a mysterious package arrives at Kumar's door, his attempt to deliver it to Harold's house ends with him inadvertently burning down Harold's father-in-law's prize Christmas tree.

Though the economy was still in dire straits, Broadway carried on during the 2009-10 season, with visits from such high-voltage marquee names as Hugh Jackman, Daniel Craig, Christopher Walken, Denzel Washington, Jude Law, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Liev Schreiber, and Scarlett Johansson. A little group called Green Day rocked Broadway's world with the stage adaptation of the band's hit album "American Idiot," Twyla Tharp paid tribute to Frank Sinatra in "Come Fly Away," and Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins formed a "Million Dollar Quartet." "Fela!," Bill T. Jones' combination dance party, concert, and musical biography, transferred to the Main Stem from its Off-Broadway run, as did Geoffrey Nauffts' tender and moving play "Next Fall." "Red" and "Time Stands Still" offered searing portraits of artists coping with crises, while Sarah Ruhl's "In the Next Room or the vibrator play" captured the repressive Victorian era. Broadway fare also...

Ouseburn's once derelict factories and warehouses are buzzing again with artists' studios, music venues and cinemas. Stephen Emms guides us around
Ouseburn was, until 10 years ago, a monument to an industrial past, its derelict factories, red-brick warehouses and mills lurking in the shadow of Victorian bridges and viaducts less than a mile from Newcastle city centre. Now, this picturesque valley, either side of the river Ouse (once used to carry coal by boat from Spital Tongues down to waiting barges on the Tyne), is the creative heart of Newcastle.
Following years of post-industrial decline, its regeneration, kick-started by community-driven enterprise rather than corporate business (the Ouseburn Trust in partnership with the local authority), has given the area's unique architecture and riverside setting a new lease of life – in the form of artists' studios, live music venues, an independent cinema and galleries. Here's a quick tour to get you started.

The morning the Screen Actors Guild announced the nominees for the 16th annual SAG awards. The actual ceremony will be held Saturday, January 23rd. There are a lot of gay-faves on the list of nominees.
For starters, Colin Firth picked up a nomination for A Single Man,and Sigourney Weaver is in the running for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries thanks to Prayers for Bobby.
Freshmen series Glee and Modern Family are competing against each other for Beest TV Comedy Ensemble.
And surprisingly (at least for me) the cast of True Blood is up for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.
You can check out the full list of nominess after the break!
Theatrical Motion Pictures

Fangoria: Welcome to Fangoria, Mr. Weaving, and thanks for taking the time to do this interview. Hugo Weaving: It’s a pleasure. No worries. It’s a healthy mix to be doing press for theatre with “God of Carnage” as well as upcoming cinema releases that I have been lucky to be involved with; namely The Wolfman

Paris Fashion week is well underway. Many critics were curious what designers would display as designer labels have become taboo in these harsh economic times. During World War 2, the Godmother of fashion Coco Chanel was forced to shut down her store in Paris due to low sales. It’s 2009 and although designers aren’t shutting down their fashion houses, they are finding creative ways to lure clients, sex. Traditional lines like Valentino, known to exuberate class, are now taking a trendy and sexier route. Designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli, Valentino's former accessory designers, had...

Do you know who invented liquid paper or the first solar home heating system? Well, those inventors were women. And with Women's History Month coming to an end, and the celebration of Ada Lovelace Day last week, we tapped into author Susan Casey's book, Women Invent! and came up with 14 women inventors you probably never heard of.
Patsy Sherman, with partner Sam Smith, invented the fabric protector Scotchgard: In the early 1950s while working at the 3M Co., Patsy Sherman and her co-worker Sam Smith were trying to create a new latex or kind of rubber for use in the fuel lines of the then-newly developed jet engines. Accidentally, some of the material spilled onto the tennis shoe of one of the technicians. When it dried, Sherman and others tried to remove it with soapy water and organic solvents. Nothing would even wet the spill.

When I began contributing to Dread Central, I was eager to reminisce about the never to be forgotten, Forrest J Ackerman and his astounding legacy. But who has time to look backwards when Ack keeps going “forry-ward” in the here and now? Case in point? In a matter of weeks Profiles In History will hold the greatest genre auction in history, offering prized objects from the collection of the Grand-daddy of all collectors. Gosh! Wow! (Dang)! It’s the Forrest J Ackerman Estate Auction!
Over the years, hardcore collectors have snatched up every existing morsel, crumb and Blob of memorabilia associated with our classic genre heritage. Sure, there’s no shortage of Terrorific collectibles in the form of model kits, prop-copies and photos. But just try and find anything “original” from the golden, silver or, hell - even aluminum-foil era of Imagi-movies? Try finding it for less than a Kong’s ransom!
