In the HBO series Barry, some of the nuanced characters present in the narrative had a big impact on both the plot and Barry’s personal life. Gene Cousineau and Barry’s girlfriend Sally were two of the most important characters on the show since their presence in this entertaining dark comedy raised the bar and added complexity to the show. Gene Cousineau was one of the most complex characters, with a contradictory nature and a hilarious comic approach. Every time he appeared on screen, he had the ability to change the mood of the story. Viewers could go from hating him to sympathizing with him, finding his character engaging and very human. In fact, all the characters in Barry were portrayed as very human, highlighting the basic nature of humanity and our propensity to make mistakes. However, Gene Cousineau excelled at creating perilous situations for himself, making him one...

Satire is one of the oldest artistic impulses; to mock and examine whatever systems, order, or supposed truths exist in any given era. Although cinema is a relatively young medium, it's no surprise that an enormous number of satires of the film and television industries have been made nearly since movies began.
HBO's "Barry," which concluded its four-season run this past Sunday night, proudly belongs to this long-standing tradition of biting the hand that feeds it, seeing as "Barry" is a highly cinematic TV series set in and around Hollywood. The grand satiric irony baked into the show's premise is the idea of a professional assassin, Barry Berkman, arriving in L.A. and deciding to try and have an acting career. The latent joke is, of course, that the showbiz world is just as morally...

I have a soft spot for Sally Reed (Sarah Goldberg), the aspiring diva starlet of "Barry." Sure, she's selfish and has poor judgment, but from all the past abuse she's suffered, you understand how she got like this. Unlike the rest of the cast, there's always a feeling that Sally could truly learn to be better, so it's extra disappointing that she rarely does. To paraphrase her forming teacher Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler), "She's deeply human." So, I was pleased that the series finale, "wow," gave her as happy an ending as possible.
It's important to remember Sally's backstory when viewing the finale. She fled from her abusive first husband Sam (Joe Massingill) by leaving in the middle of the night. In "wow," she repeats this after Barry declines to turn himself in. Sally had previously sworn she'd never be with a violent man again,...

[This story contains major spoilers from the series finale of Barry, “Wow.”]
It’d be understandable if you expected things not to work out for Sarah Goldberg’s Sally Reed in the series finale of HBO’s Barry.
After all, things hadn’t been going her way for a while. In season three, just as she finally achieved the success she’d yearned for, the rug was pulled out from under her when her show is canceled (and so is she, after a career-ending outburst and her association with her hitman ex-boyfriend Barry Berkman, played by writer-director-star Bill Hader). In season four, Sally is a shell of herself — or at least she thinks so. Viewers saw her find her way back to Los Angeles and follow Gene Cousineau’s (Henry Winkler) path, pivoting from acting to teaching acting. And while it’s something she’s good at, it’s not the thing she wants. Her ego, eventually, gets in her way once again.

"If I can change ... and you can change ... everybody can change!!!" Of course, those were the immortal words uttered by boxing champ Rocky Balboa in 1985 when he solved the Cold War (citation needed), yet they're also words that resonate for the characters in HBO's "Barry."
When the series (which just ended its run with the final episode of its fourth season) began in 2018, it seemed to be the tale of Barry Berkman (Bill Hader), an ex-Marine turned assassin-for-hire who was looking to escape his existence of dread and death and found a guiding light in the form of acting. Brought into the Los Angeles struggling actor fold by teacher Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler) and fellow student (and later girlfriend) Sally Reed (Sarah Goldberg), Barry believed that true change was possible via working out his deep-seated trauma and mental issues on stage.

Week after week, in frantic monologue after frantic monologue, Sarah Goldberg delivered one of the greatest performances on TV in recent memory as Barry‘s self-obsessed actress Sally Reed, whose intensity occasionally unnerved even Bill Hader’s titular hitman character. She scored an Emmy nomination for her performance in Season One — for this season, where she disguises herself as a brunette waitress with a Southern accent, becomes one of the worst on-screen mothers ever, and melts down into hallucinations, she deserves a win. “I don’t know if in my lifetime,...

“Denial, it’s tough.”
This line by Monroe Fuches is perhaps the most important sentiment expressed at any point during these four seasons of Barry. The series began as a Hollywood satire, illustrating the thin line that exists between killing on stage and killing in real life. Over time, though, it became about a different kind of performance: the ones we do for ourselves, rather than for each other, in an attempt to push away the truths we don’t want to have to confront.

The end of "Barry" is nigh, and while we don't know exactly where these characters will end up, we do know that the actors had a major say in it. The very nature of the show intertwines the roles of performer and creator: Bill Hader isn't just the star, he also co-created the series. He's written several "Barry" episodes and directed plenty too (including the entire fourth season), showing off his filmmaking chops in the process.
Hader's experience on both sides of the camera might be why, according to his co-stars, he's generous about letting their perceptions inform their characters. Ahead of the series finale, the "Barry" main cast sat down with the Los Angeles Times for a group interview. Henry Winkler (Gene Cousineau) and Sarah Goldberg (Sally Reed) both described how Hader gave them a voice at the table.

When last we left Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) and Sally Reed (Sarah Goldberg) on the HBO series "Barry," they were in great distress. (When has that ever not been true?) Barry and Sally have made a meager life for themselves and their son John (Zachary Golinger) in middle America for eight years, thanks to being in the FBI Witness Protection program after Barry revealed secrets of his time with the Chechen mob to get out of jail. They've reinvented themselves as Clark and Emily, a married couple that doesn't do much aside from home-schooling John, and working at a local diner. But Sally and Barry are both shocked to learn, via the Hollywood Reporter, that a) Warner Bros. is pursuing a biopic about Barry's life as a hitman/acting student and b) Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler) has come out of hiding after having shot his son Leo (Andrew Leeds) to purportedly consult on the film.

Where’s Barry Berkman?
This was the question asked by the warden at the end of last week’s episode, and it’s the one everyone wants an answer to throughout “It Takes a Psycho.” This may extend to the audience, who have to wait nearly the entire episode to see the show’s title character emerge from the shadows to greet Sally. And the scene after that one invites a whole host of questions:
Where’s Barry Berkman now?...

For Sally Reed, it’s all or nothing.
Now that the first half of Barry’s final season is in the books, Sarah Goldberg is looking back on the events that led to Sally’s shocking decision to go on the run with Barry, who’s now a fugitive and prison escapee. On the heels of her abusive viral video and the world now knowing that she dated a contract killer, Sally’s acting dreams have flatlined. So, rather than having a showbiz-adjacent career as an acting coach, or as the host and star of a podcast and reality show that exploit the true crime she was peripheral to, Sally chose Barry and the pedestal he would still put her on, sans judgment. Right now, anything is better than standing on the sidelines of Hollywood as a spectator.

When Bill Hader and Alec Berg's HBO series "Barry" was first announced back in 2018, the show's identity was pitched somewhere between dark comedy and dramedy. Speaking to Vulture on the eve of the first season's release, Hader explained how he and Berg landed on placing their hitman protagonist inside a Los Angeles acting class because "we were struck by how much it felt like group therapy. We decided, 'Okay, Barry can realize things about himself through theater.'"
That's a more insightful observation than the average layman might realize — for anyone who's taken an acting class a little more advanced than high school level, these classes often resemble a bizarre sort of group therapy session more than anything else. Where one might expect to see discussions of scenes, characters, and craft, such classes have an unsettling tendency to...

Being a rabid fan of SNL skits for years, this third episode of “Barry” season 4 made me unexpectedly happy. With back-to-back cameos in episode 3, the creators once again showed why “Barry” is regarded as one of the best shows on the air right now, as it keeps surprising and delighting us. Previously in “Barry,” we saw Barry in prison, where his mental health deteriorated to the point where we could only see the evil within him. Especially in episode 3, the complexity of his character became more evident and raised doubts about whether he was ever a good person. Let’s see what made us think this way.

Spoilers for "Barry" follow.
Despite how dark and dramatic the show has progressively become "Barry" is a comedy series. The latest episode of season 4, "you're charming," featured a gag that the series has used before with very funny results.
Last season, Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler) helped put Barry (Bill Hader) behind bars with a sting operation. Despite a promise not to talk to the media, Gene couldn't resist the spotlight. In the previous episode, "bestest place on the earth," he dug his own grave by talking with Vanity Fair reporter Lon O'Neil (Patrick Fischler). Worse, Gene didn't settle for a simple interview -- he performed a one-man show recounting his entire relationship with Barry and forgot to request anonymity until after the performance was over.
In "you're charming," the Los Angeles D.A. tells Gene and his agent Tom (Fred Melamed) about Barry cutting a deal with the FBI for immunity.

The curtain is closing on Barry, HBO‘s dark comedy series about a hit man from the Midwest who moves to Los Angeles and falls in love with the stage. A new, full-length trailer for “Barry” Season 4 has arrived, offering a closer look at what to expect from the final eight episodes of the Emmy-winning half-hour series. Although he won Emmys in 2018 and 2019 for his work on “Barry,” Bill Hader was unfortunately kept from repeating his success at the SAG Awards by Tony Shalhoub and his “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” cast mates. This article contains spoilers for Barry season 3.
The mark of a good TV show is to make every season finale feel like a series finale. And through three years of superb storytelling, no TV show has embodied that virtue better than HBO dark comedy Barry.
The story of hitman-turned-actor Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) seemed as though it could have ended in the first season when Barry committed the ultimate sin of killing Detective Janice Moss (Paula Newsome). It felt as though it could end for good in season 2 again when Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler) uncovered Barry’s crime. Now, at the end of season 3, Barry presents its most conclusive ending yet. Barry is tricked into storming into Janice’s father Jim’s home to kill him only to be stopped by an entire LAPD Swat team and taken into custody.
How could a story about a hitman possibly continue after that?...

“She’s got a huge appetite for the dangling prize, and she wants to be a star,” declares Sarah Goldberg about her role as self-centered actress Sally Reed on HBO’s “Barry.” The Emmy-winning dark comedy about a hitman (played by series co-creator Bill Hader) struggling to escape his criminal past returned earlier this year after a three-year hiatus due in large part to pandemic shutdowns. In our exclusive video interview (watch above), Goldberg talks about returning to her Emmy-nominated role and about why she’s not bothered by negative reactions to her character.
“I’m really tired of seeing likeable women on TV,” she exclaims. “This is a show where you’ve got a bunch of men who kill people and we’re able to stomach that as a society, no problem. We don’t bat an eyelid. But to show an ambitions, slightly narcissistic woman on TV, people...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you haven’t watched “all the sauces,” the fourth episode of Season 3 of “Barry,” streaming now on HBO Max.
The first two seasons of Alec Berg and Bill Hader’s “Barry” followed the title character (played by Hader) as he barely maintained a double life between his hitman career and his newfound pursuit of acting. The character was able to keep these two worlds separate less because of any actions on his part than because of the self-absorption of the people he surrounded himself with — chief among them his love interest, Sally Reed. As played with gleefully neurotic, manic energy by Canadian actor Sarah Goldberg, Sally is convinced she was born for success, and is so single-mindedly focused on her career that she’s not paying nearly enough attention to spot any of the warning signs that Barry’s a killer.

Although HBO's "Barry" is slightly more of a comedy than other prestige dramas like "Breaking Bad," it does feature a similar dynamic: the main hero with the big, dark secret, and the love interest character he's hiding the secret from. It's not the exact same, though: Sally (Sarah Goldberg) doesn't know Barry (Bill Hader) before the start of the show, and she's a lot less suspicious of him throughout the first two seasons. Skyler (Anna Gunn) picked up on her husband's changes right away in "Breaking Bad," but season 2 of "Barry" comes and goes without Sally coming any closer to figuring things out.

Half reluctant serial killer for hire, half wannabe actor: How will Barry (Bill Hader) split the difference?
HBO’s Emmy-winning “Barry” kicks off Season 3 on April 24, and it’s clear from the teaser trailer that Barry has found himself in an even deeper mess than before. The Chechen mob is after him while the Los Angeles police department closes in thanks to former boss Monroe Fuches (Stephen Root) tipping off Barry’s acting teacher Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler) about the murder of his cop girlfriend Detective Janice Moss (Paula Newsome). And Barry is still trying to make a relationship work with fellow actor Sally Reed (Sarah Goldberg).
Our heads are spinning more than after reciting a Shakespearian monologue. Keep scrolling to see where Barry Blockman left off in Season 2, plus get all the details about Season 3 before its premiere.

It's been a long wait for Barry Season 3.
Thankfully, HBO confirmed Tuesday that the Bill Hader-led comedy series will receive its season premiere Sunday, April 24 at 10/9c.
Fans will have waited almost three years for fresh episodes, and it sure sounds like a lot will have changed.
“While Barry has eliminated many of the external factors that pushed him towards violence, he soon discovers they weren’t the only forces at play,” according to HBO’s official synopsis.
“What is it about his own psyche that led him to become a killer in the first place? Season 3 finds Barry and the other characters trying to make the right choice.”
The cast also includes Henry Winkler as Barry’s acting teacher Gene Cousineau, Stephen Root as Barry’s handler Monroe Fuches, Anthony Carrigan as NoHo Hank, and Sarah Goldberg as Sally Reed, Barry's love interest.

This story about Bill Hader and “Barry” first appeared in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
After a strong debut season, one that ended with a pair of Emmy wins for star Bill Hader and supporting actor Henry Winkler, HBO’s “Barry” comfortably avoided any sophomore slump, as it allowed Hader’s title character to fully go into the darkness. The season ended with Hader’s hitman-turned-actor, Barry, on an all-out killing spree, and with Barry’s acting teacher Gene Cousineau (Winkler) having the jaw-dropping realization that Barry might have been the one who killed his girlfriend, Detective Janice Moss, at the end of Season 1.
Prior to that chaotic finale, one of the standout moments from “Barry’s” second season was the “Ronny/Lily” episode, which saw Barry and Monroe Fuches (Stephen Root) encounter Lily (Jessie Giacomazzi), the world’s most terrifying 11 -year-old girl. “There’s something up with her.

“Barry” had a great first season at the Emmys. In 2018 it earned 13 nominations and 3 wins, including Best Comedy Actor (Bill Hader) and Best Comedy Supporting Actor (Henry Winkler). But Winkler was the only supporting star who was even nominated. Will his co-stars Anthony Carrigan, Stephen Root and Sarah Goldberg get to share the spotlight in season two? It’s actually quite common for a show to blow up in the supporting categories after first-year snubs.
Even some of the Emmys’ favorite shows didn’t sweep the supporting categories right away. “Sex and the City” scene-stealer Kim Cattrall had to wait until season two for her first nomination, while Cynthia Nixon had to wait until season four and Kristin Davis didn’t get hers until the sixth and final year. “The Office” didn’t get any supporting nominations until its third season in 2007, the year after it won Best Comedy Series.

Barry Berkman has plenty more acting lessons in his future: HBO has renewed its dark comedy Barry for a third season.
The news comes less than three weeks into Barry‘s sophomore season, which is currently airing Sundays at 10 pm.
Created by Alec Berg and Bill Hader, Barry stars Hader as a disillusioned hitman who discovers he has an interest in acting. Bill Hader returns as the ruthless hitman-turned-aspiring actor in the hilarious new trailer for Season Two of Barry, set to premiere March 31st on HBO.
The new clip finds Hader’s titular character struggling to extricate himself from his crime-filled past, even taking a job at an athletic store as he tries to refine his craft on the stage. In HBO’s Barry, a wildcard has been thrown into the testosterone mix. All the bad guys cannot hold a candle to the self-absorbed and slightly delusional aspiring actor Sally Reed, played by Sarah Goldberg. Her wide-eyed enthusiasm for acting has snagged the interest of the titular Barry (Bill Hader) as he falls hard for her, except his awkward Mid-Western face value approach has this La woman less than smitten. Plus, Barry’s been put on a Chechen mob hit schedule and has a manipulative handler who keeps finding ways to keep his head out of the acting class game, especially with […]
