Clairo has returned to announce her new album, Charm, and shared the record’s first single, “Sexy to Someone.” Stream it below.
Set for release on July 12th, Charm is Clairo’s third album, and will arrive via her new label, Clairo Records. The album was produced by Leon Michels of the Dap-Kings and El Michels Affair, and it sees Clairo advancing on the ornate, jazz-and-folk-inspired work found in Sling. Recorded live to tape with an extensive ensemble of musicians, Clairo was inspired by the ambitious arrangements, songwriting, and recording technqiues of Harry Nilsson and Blossom Dearie.
After hopping on remixes of tracks from Phoenix and Beabadoobee and releasing a pair of singles on Bandcamp benefitting Doctors Without Borders last year, “Sexy to Someone” is Clairo’s first piece of new music since 2021’s Sling. The soundtrack for Jane Schoenbrun’s new coming-of-age horror film I Saw the TV Glow has arrived, with songs by Sloppy Jane (featuring Phoebe Bridgers), Caroline Polachek, Bartees Strange, Jay Som, and more.
First announced in February, the soundtrack and its stacked lineup comes via A24 Music, and is available on a thematically-appropriate pink opaque vinyl. Atmospheric and diverse in style, the songs allude to the film’s emotional depth, and even contribute to the world of its narrative.
In the film, Bridgers and Sloppy Jane’s Haley Dahl appear as themselves, as do Kristina Esfandiari and her band King Woman. Also appearing in the film are Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst, Justice Smith, Brigette Lundy-Paine, Conner O’Malley, and Snail Mail’s Lindsey Jordan (who contributed a bonus track to vinyl editions of the soundtrack).
Polachek’s song, “Starburned and Unkissed” dropped earlier this month as the soundtrack’s lead single.

It’s hard to imagine we’ll get a better soundtrack this year than that for Jane Schoenbruen’s I Saw the TV Glow. Bringing together yeule, Frances Quinlan, Florist, King Woman, Caroline Polachek, Bartees Strange, Jay Som, The Weather Station, L’Rain, Drab Majesty, Sloppy Jane, and more, with Twin Peaks Roadhouse-esque musical performances in the movie, the soundtrack has now arrived digitally ahead of a vinyl release in July. Meanwhile, the film continues to expand this weekend before going wide next weekend.
I said in my review, “Utterly hypnotic in rhythm from its very first scenes, we hear a haunting motif that will return: Yeule’s cover of Broken Social Scene’s “Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl” as Owen glides underneath a rainbow elementary school parachute. It’s a transfixing moment of color and sound and sets the stage as we’re whisked into this 1996-set world.

Caroline Polachek has unveiled “Starburned and Unkissed,” her original contribution to the absolutely stacked soundtrack for Jane Schoenbrun and A24’s new film, I Saw the TV Glow.
Produced by Polachek alongside A.G. Cook, “Starburned and Unkissed” is cathartic, noisy, and anthemic — the distorted electric guitar that drops in the song’s chorus is so visceral that it feels alien to the sun-soaked ecstasy of Polachek’s last album, Desire, I Want to Turn Into You. A press release notes that “Starburned and Unkissed” features prominently in the film, and the song’s grungy hue mirrors the film’s eerie, psychological horror backdrop. Stream the track below.

When Grammy-winning musician Jack Antonoff was curating the music for AppleTV+’s series “The New Look,” he shared ideas of instrumentation and a list of artists he had in mind for who could form the soundtrack.
“We started looking at the wish list and who was realistic,” says the show’s music supervisor Mark Wike. “We looked at who was touring and who was doing what. It was all about the different variables to make it happen.” In the end, Bartees Strange, Lana Del Rey, Florence Welch and Nick Cave were among the artists who Antonoff gathered to help curate contemporary and new original recordings of classics.
The series follows the rise of Christian Dior (Ben Mendelsohn) as a designer living and working in Paris during the Nazi occupation. Juliette Binoche plays Coco Chanel, already established herself as a grand designer, and the series follows the pivotal moment when Dior...

Not long ago, Lizzie No had an out-of-body experience while listening to Gillian Welch. The singer-songwriter had spent the past few years trying to make sense of the fractured, frighteningly personal songs she’d been writing, songs that spoke to a pain whose source she couldn’t always name. Many of them ended up on Halfsies, the stunning new record that the songwriter says is, in large part, about the “sensation of living in the scar without having any understanding of the initial wound.”

Towards the end of her song “Amelia,” Samia walks into a party. “I’m writing a poem, somebody stop me,” she sings over balmy synths and a chirpy beat. It’s less of an actual threat and more a self-aware quip from the 27-year-old musician who’s better than almost anyone at turning fleeting moments into poetry.
“I love romanticizing shit, and I always have,” Samia says. “I was an internally dramatic child. There’s something really powerful and something that feels like protest sometimes in writing [my thoughts] down in a song.

When the Apple TV+ series The New Look premiered in February, it brought with it the true stories of Paris-based fashion designers — from Christian Dior to Coco Chanel — navigating the hardships of World War II. But the show also offered a new sound by way of its Jack Antonoff-produced soundtrack. The latest release from the record finds Bartees Strange reimagining the 1940s classic “You Always Hurt the One You Love.”

Water from Your Eyes have shared a cover of Ween’s “If You Could Save Yourself (You’d Save Us All),” as part of Sounds of Saving’s “Songs That Found Me at The Right Time” series.
The CoSign alums picked the 2003 track to cover in part because of how relatable it was to vocalist Rachel Brown. “The reason that I even started making music by myself was ’cause I was really mentally unwell, but I didn’t really know how to communicate,” they explained in a Q&a accompanying the release. “I was like really depressed and suicidal for most of high school. I spent a lot of time thinking that there was no other option besides to have terrible thoughts that ruined my day…I just started writing songs ’cause it was like the only place that felt appropriate to be expressing the things that I was thinking about.

In her song, “At the Holiday Party,” St. Vincent describes a convivial scene in which everyone celebrating loosens up, maybe takes a few pills, and lets down their guard. This Is Why is Paramore’s sixth studio album, and their first since 2017’s transformative After Laughter.

Claire Cottrill recorded new versions of songs from both of her albums, 2019’s Immunity and 2021’s Sling, at the famed New York City studio. The tracks have been performed live for several years now, so the recording offers the kind of comfortable, lived-in performance that allows the artist and her band to really let loose. Singles “Bags” and “Amoeba” especially stand out in these jaunty iterations; Clairo’s vocals and melodies on are on full display compared to the studio versions’ meticulously crafted sheen.
“I’m extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to perform at Electric Lady,” Clairo said in a statement. “A huge thank you to everyone involved!”

Muna closed out their performance at Coachella on Friday with “Silk Chiffon” and brought out Phoebe Bridgers for her verse on the song. Soon after, they were joined by the rest of the “motherfucking boys” of boygenius — Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus — on stage. While “Silk Chiffon” released two years ago as Muna’s first release on Phoebe Bridgers’ Saddest Factory Records, the track remains one their most addictive hits to date.

Instead, the trio made of Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker played through most of the album during a warmup show at the Fox Theater in Pomona, California.

Clairo unveiled the new charity single “For Now” via Bandcamp, with proceeds benefiting the non-profits For The Gworls, which supports Black, transgender people to cover rent, gender-affirming surgeries, and more, as well as Everytown, the coalition set on ending gun violence in the United States.
The self-described demo, which the Boston singer-songwriter announced via Twitter on April Fools’ Day, offers few tricks but instead delivers a tender vocal take that embodies the fleeting bliss of a new romance. Backed by spare instrumentation aside from the keys-based bedrock and some light woodwind accompaniment, Clairo lets the devastation of her love’s limited run linger in the chorus as she sings, “I’m loving you for now/ Until it all breaks down.” Stream “For Now” below.
Despite her complete lack of Bandcamp activity since 2016, the singer’s decision to return to the platform was likely due to the charitable intent of the demo’s release.

Clairo released a new demo called “For Now” on Bandcamp. Proceeds from the song will benefit For the Gworls, which raises funds to help Black transgender people with financial aid for rent, medical and travel financial assistance; and Everytown for Gun Safety, which seeks to prevent gun violence by advocating for evidence-based solutions.
On the nimble, keys-led ballad, Claire Cottrill quietly professes her devotion to a person. The lyrics find her eschewing diving too deeply into the thoughts behind what’s happening in favor of enjoying being swept away by the feelings of the moment.

Wilco are heading back to Mexico this December for their Sky Blue Sky Festival. They’ve unveiled the full lineup for its 2023 iteration today, which includes Father John Misty, Sylvan Esso, and Lucinda Williams.
Wilco themselves, of course, are also featured on the lineup for Sky Blue Sky 2023, where they’ll play three shows throughout the four-day festival at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya. Other notable names on the poster include Waxahatchee, Kevin Morby, Built to Spill, Bartees Strange, and Cate Le Bon, as well as a solo set from Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy.
“Sky Blue Sky is something we feel lucky we get to do, and look forward to every time we put one together,” Tweedy writes in a press release. “We love sharing music with our friends, and we love getting together with everyone in the sun. It’s nice to step out from under the clouds every now and then.

The music portion of SXSW 2023 kicked off with wild parties, quietly powerful songwriting, new artists making an impression, and one surprise pop-up from an A-list act — all the things that make this a great festival. Bartees Strange has revealed his new single, “Daily News,” and announced a series of tour dates that’ll take his acclaimed live show around the world.
Originally a bonus track from the physical release of his celebrated sophomore album, Farm to Table, “Daily News” is a great example of Strange’s style. Starting out in an ethereal soundscape of plucking guitars and melodic vocal “oohs,” it builds into a massive cathartic release. Strange’s voice at the climax — lifted by thundering drums, soloing saxophones, and a wall of well-mixed harmony — unmistakably conveys the 34-year-old’s ability to infuse his work with profound emotion. Listen below.
Alongside the new single, Strange unveiled his upcoming tour dates, which will include his first appearance at SXSW, open slots for boygenius on the Re:set concert series, dates supporting The National, and headlining shows across the United States and Europe. You can purchase tickets here...

The National appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Friday, where they gave a rousing performance of their new single “Tropic Morning News.” Watch a replay below.
“Tropic Morning News” — a former Consequence Song of the Week — has a bit of a melancholy air in its official recording, but The National brought palpable excitement to their Fallon performance. Live percussion, trumpet, and a guitar solo split between brothers Aaron and Bryce Dessner uplift Matt Berninger’s wordy lyrics, which are, appropriately, all about stumbling through conversations and not feeling comfortable in your own skin.
The song joins latest single “New Order T-Shirt” in previewing First Two Pages of Frankenstein, The National’s upcoming ninth album. Featuring Sufjan Stevens, Phoebe Bridgers, and Taylor Swift, the album is out April 28th via 4Ad. Pre-orders are ongoing.

In the self-shot video — a testament to the trio’s bond — Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker hit up amusement parks and monster truck rallies, record in the studio, and just hang out doing Boygenius things. Jackson Bridgers edited the video.
In Rolling Stone’s recent cover story on Boygenius, Bridgers revealed that she stashed the Sheryl Crow-inspired lyric for years until the perfect song came along.
