Horse racing’s Triple Crown came to an end on June 8 as Palace Malice took home the title after a thrilling one and a half mile race at the Belmont Stakes.
Though there wouldn’t be a Triple Crown winner in 2013, the 145th annual running of the Belmont Stakes still ended up being an exciting race. Palace Malice triumphantly crossed the finish line first — no one saw that coming!
Palace Malice Wins The 2013 Belmont Stakes
After rain mucked up both the tracks at the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes this year, Belmont, New York saw a dry day for the race, which meant we got to see the horses run even faster.
The Belmont is also the longest race of the Triple Crown. Its one and a half mile track is half a mile longer than the Kentucky Derby and about a quarter mile longer than the Preakness.

Racing fans had their eyes glued to their TV sets on May 18 to see if Orb could continue his quest towards the Triple Crown. But after a thrilling race, Oxbow took home the Preakness Stakes title!
The Preakness Stakes may not be as glamorous as the Kentucky Derby, but it is definitely just as exciting. This year’s race at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland featured the heavily-favored Orb, who was looking to move one step closer to claiming the first Triple Crown title in 35 years. But it was not meant to be!
Oxbow: 2013 Preakness Stakes Winner
Rain had intermittently fallen all day — creating a mucky track similar to the one Orb won on at the Kentucky Derby. The nine-horse field — smaller than the Kentucky Derby’s — quickly bunched up for the 9.5-furlongs race as the horses jockeyed for position, but Oxbow notably got out ahead. In a huge upset,...

The hopes for a Triple Crown horse this year were dashed when Kentucky Derby winner and heavy favorite, Orb, placed fourth in the 138th Preakness Stakes. Another horse, Oxbow, took the win.
Going into the race, Orb, ridden by jockey Joel Rosario, was the favorite to win by a lot -- right before the Stakes, bookmakers were offering only 3-5 odds on Orb to win. The actual winner, meanwhile, was pretty much a long-shot. Anyone betting on Oxbow got to take advantage of 15-1 odds.
But Oxbow did win. The horse, with jockey Gary Stevens (a three-time Preakness winner himself), took an early lead in the race, pulling ahead of Golden Cents by the first turn. Oxbow only increased that lead for the rest of the run, never allowing another to pass from that point onward.

John Perrotta was a racetrack lifer when he got the call from David Milch in 2008 to come to California to join the writing staff for Luck. He’d represented jockeys and managed the stables owned by billionaire breeders for decades, so he was the perfect person to bring authenticity to the gritty drama that starred Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte. His Luck cohort Bill Barich recently wrote in an essay for Narrative Magazine that Milch liked to say that Perrotta “knows where the bodies are buried,” but that’s just a Milch-ian way of saying that his pal knows everything...

Chester “Ace” Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman) emerges from prison, having served a stretch for offences that this intricately plotted drama takes its time to elucidate. He is collected by his long-term companion, driver and confidante Gus (Dennis Farina) and straight away starts to work towards a grand plan of revenge on the men who each had a part to play in his incarceration. Meanwhile, four down on their luck gamblers set up a complex six-race accumulator that might just net them a fortune, while an assortment of other jockeys, gamblers, trainers, owners and managers intersect, their lives and fortunes inextricably linked to the California race track that will one way or another hold the key to each person’s fate.

Over his 40 years in and around the business, Gary Stevens has gained a unique perspective on Thoroughbred racing.
He is best known, of course, as the jockey with 4,888 career wins to his credit, including three Kentucky Derbies and Belmont Stakes, two Preakness Stakes, eight Breeders' Cup races, and a record nine Santa Anita Derbies. The 138th running of the Kentucky Derby is fast approaching, and while mint juleps, outlandish hats and preppy pants will be reliable features at Churchill Downs, the annual event is, let's not forget, a horse race. So we asked two experts in the field - jockey Mike Smith, who won the Kentucky Derby in 2005 and is riding the favorite, Bodemeister, on Saturday; and Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens, who won the Kentucky Derby three times over his career - to handicap this weekend's race. Who should you bet on? By all accounts, it's Bodemeister, who has been installed as...

HBO's Luck has been cancelled after a third unfortunate horse death. The network and executive producers David Milch and Michael Mann made the decision after the most recent accident. The show was in the middle of filming the second season, which stars Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte. Remaining episodes of season one are set to air as scheduled.
Luck gave "a behind-the-track look at the world of horse racing and gambling’s denizens – owners, trainers, jockeys and gamblers." The cast also included Dennis Farina, John Ortiz, Richard Kind, Kevin Dunn, Ian Hart, Ritchie Coster, Jason Gedrick, Kerry Condon, Gary Stevens, Tom Payne, and Jill Hennessy. Milch and Mann executive produced along with Carolyn Strauss.
Here is the official statement: It is with heartbreak that executive producers David Milch and Michael Mann together with HBO have decided to cease all future production on the series Luck.
Safety is always of paramount concern.

After three horses died during the production of the horse-racing series Luck, HBO has decided to cancel the series and shut down production.
The cast and crew were in the middle of shooting the second episode of their second season. HBO had initially said that filming would continue on the David Milch series with scenes that didn't involve horses. Word is now that production is shutting down for good. The second episode of the sophomore season won't be completed and the first episode won't air.
While Luck boasts a lot of talented performers -- Dustin Hoffman, Nick Nolte, Dennis Farina, John Ortiz, Richard Kind, Kevin Dunn, Ian Hart, Ritchie Coster, Jason Gedrick, Kerry Condon, Gary Stevens, Tom Payne, and Jill Hennessy -- the numbers weren't nearly as impressive. The pilot drew 1.14 million viewers for a December 2011 preview and 1.06 million when...

There’s no other way to start this review/recap without giving away a (possibly) Major Spoiler: poor, young Nathan Israel (Patrick J. Adams) took a glass ashtray to the head — twice nonetheless! — thanks to the anger and fury of one Michael “Mike” Smythe (Michael Gambon). When we last see young Nathan, he’s on the floor, inside Mike’s yacht, unconscious and bleeding profusely from his wounds. There is a good chance that he is dead (we’ll probably get a confirmation in Episode 8). The fact that he doesn’t check in with Ace (Dustin Hoffman) and Gus (Dennis Farina) the after his meeting with the evil big wigs worries them. They try to convince themselves that he’s probably enjoying the beautiful women in Mike’s harem but that scenario is way too good to be true.
Things went awry for Nathan because he kept his cool trying...

I will say this for Luck: it does an excellent job creating a seedy environment with seedy people who are generally up to no good. Even the most decent and honest people in the show seem to be decent and honest on a sort of a sliding scale that has limited to connection to the world most people live in.
We open with Ace (Dustin Hoffman) working out in a gym. As he does, his probation officer shows up to get a urinalysis test. Yes, I’m surprised that they do house calls unless it’s to arrest someone. I’m even more surprised that the Po in question let Ace do his UA behind closed doors. Makes me wonder if someone’s paying him off, but that doesn’t make much sense, as Ace doesn’t have a drug problem that I’m aware of.

If there was a common criticism of “Luck’s” pilot episode, it was that the multiple plot strands were a little hard to follow. Michael Lombardo, the president of HBO Programming, announced today that the network has decided to renew Luck for a second season, after the series’ pilot episode received overwhelming critical acclaim and attracted a total of 3.3 million viewers. Which is not bad for a series that turned out to be a harder sell then most premium cable shows since there are no loveable serial killers or neurotic mobsters among the large cast. The pickup, which is for ten episodes, is slated to air in January 2013.

"Leave nothing to chance" is the tagline of HBO’s new drama, Luck, and it seems that creator David Milch and pilot director Michael Mann have taken that advice to heart. The first episode is a tightly controlled foray into a world of obsession, high stakes and, of course, horse racing.
But for a show about such heady things, Luck is slow moving. If you’re a fan of Milch's past work, you know what you’re in for. Those of you who are just getting acquainted with the TV auteur, I have some advice for you: hurry up and wait. It's a common phrase heard around the rails of horse races and horse shows, and it aptly describes the pace of Luck.
Personally, I'm okay with a slow boil if it allows the viewers to immerse themselves in the world, especially one so deeply detailed as the one depicted here.

[Spoilers follow] "Luck" is a world that David Milch knows well. His self-described addiction to the track is legendary, both as a prodigious better and an owner. He once had a horse headed for the Derby who, like a horse in the pilot, broke down (in life, after the Louisville plane tickets had been booked). If the characters in "Deadwood" were based on historical figures, those in "Luck" are drawn from life. (Indeed, the regulars even include Gary Stevens as a former jockey; you can’t get closer to reality than that.) The track is one of our most democratic institutions, and Milch gets this part absolutely right. So far, at least, he’s...

Chicago – Legendary TV writer David Milch turns the world of horse racing and the people who populate it into a place not unlike the legendary title location in his beloved “Deadwood.” Just as everyone swirled around Al Swearengen’s saloon, almost all of the action in HBO’s stellar “Luck,” debuting January 29th, 2012, takes place at the track or the stables nearby. And the people who populate this world do so in a way not unlike the folks of the new west looking for gold. They’re looking for a break; looking for hope; looking for inspiration; looking for luck.
Television Rating: 5.0/5.0
Luck and desperation are intrinsically intertwined. Those who make their livings in a world filled with risk like horse racing pray for the former but live in a world dominated by the latter. Milch knows this well as he’s a horse owner and lover of horse racing himself.

Happy Holidays fans of Enlightened, HBO has given you a gift by renewing the first-year series with its second season. As for fans of Bored to Death, Hung, and How to Make it in America, I’m afraid you were given a lump of coal in your stockings. HBO cancelled all three series after Hung and Bored to Death failed to reach a wider audience after three seasons. How to Make it in America had just two seasons, same result. Still as beloved as these shows were by their most avid fans, HBO has to make hard decisions too.
With marginal ratings, HBO will move forward and beef up their network with six new shows including Dustin Hoffman’s horseracing drama, Luck featuring Nick Nolte, Dennis Farina, Gary Stevens, and Tom Payne, Aaron Sorkin’s untitled series starring Olivia Munn, Ricky Gervais’ Life’s Too Short, Veep, Girls, and Angry Boys.

When you have a familiarity with some actors and directors it doesn't take much to get people excited and names such as director Michael Mann (Collateral, Heat), "Deadwood" screenwriter David Milch and Dustin Hoffman have certainly come together in this teaser for HBO's "Luck", horse racing drama taking a look at the owners, gamblers, jockeys and diverse gaming industry players. The cast for the pilot stars Dustin Hoffman, Dennis Farina, John Ortiz, Kevin Dunn, Richard Kind, Jason Gedrick, Ritchie Coster, Ian Hart, Tom Payne, Kerry Condon, Gary Stevens and Nick Nolte. Jill Hennessy guest stars.

This is, admittedly, TV rather than film news, but the news that the generally dependable HBO has picked up a new series called Luck, from a pilot directed by the ever-dependable Michael Mann and starring the always dependable Dustin Hoffman, is just too good to pass up.Set in the world of horse racing and encompassing jockeys, owners, gamblers and gaming industry players, the series is based on a script by NYPD Blue and Deadwood writer David Milch, and also stars (at least in the pilot) Dennis Farina, John Ortiz, Kevin Dunn, Richard Kind, Jason Gedrick, Ritchie Coster, Ian Hart, Tom Payne, Kerry Condon, Gary Stevens and Nick Nolte.Shooting is due to start this autumn at Santa Anita Park in Southern California and around La. With a bit of luck (ahem) we should see the results sometime in 2011.And yes, that's a zebra with Hoffman in the picture. As you will no doubt remember,...

I thought Seabiscuit was pretty good. Tobey Maguire was a bit off as the jockey, but overall, it was an enjoyable film. I dig horse racing films overall -- honestly, I just like movies about animals (as long as they're not about special ops hamsters or some other dumb shit). In any event, it's a bit of a surprise that a movie about Secretariat hasn't been made before. Arguably the most well-known race horse, Secretariat was one of only 11 horses to win the U.S. Triple Crown, and when he did it in 1973, no one had done so in 25 years. It's a pretty compelling story.
Now, Disney (of course) has a film adaptation due out, and I have to admit, the trailer looks fun. They've got a juggernaut of a cast -- Diane Lane, John Malkovich, Scott Glenn, James Cromwell, Dylan Baker, and Fred Thompson -- so it ain't exactly short on acting talent.

Chicago – Universal Home Video is releasing a wave of titles timed for Father’s Day gifts. Some of their choices - “Field of Dreams,” “Fletch” - seem like logical picks for a better HD daddy day than another striped tie while others seem chosen purely because they have the word “Men” or “Man” in the title - “Children of Men,” “Cinderella Man,” “Inside Man”.
Most are pretty good and some are great. Pick your favorite and give it to your Blu-Ray pop.
“Inside Man” will be released on Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009.
The other five titles were released on Tuesday, May 26th, 2009.

Seabiscuit star Gary Stevens was released from hospital yesterday, three days after he fell from a horse and suffered a collapsed lung during a race. The jockey, who plays George Woolf in the movie, sustained his injuries at Saturday's Arlington Million in Illinois, America. He fell when his horse, Storming Home, veered out sharply before the finishing line, throwing the rider to the turf where he was then stepped on by one of the horses behind. After three days of treatment, Northwest Community Hospital spokesman Bob Niersbach says Stevens left "in good condition". He is not expected to ride for a month.
