One of the exciting parts to themed-film festivals is the discovery of new, local voices, like that of Julian Pham. Pham's first feature, “Owl,” speaks a story that is both Oakland-specific and universal to parent-child relationships. The narrative film follows locksmith Jean Kaneko (Marica Petrey), who returns home to take care of her ailing father. Coming home is not easy, however. As memories of her absent mother well up, her father's stubbornness ignite arguments, and her childhood friendships become entangled, she finds herself consistently frustrated – until she stumbles upon a windfall that could change all of their lives forever.
We spoke to director Julian Pham over Zoom in the advent of his world premiere at CAAMFest 2024. We talked about how to make a community out of nothing and marinating in open-ended relationships.
What inspired “Owl”?
Julian Pham: Marica, the lead actor and producer, and I were hanging out at this outdoor bar.

Airing from 2005 to 2013, NBC’s The Office has become one of the most beloved sitcoms not only on the network, but rather in the overall TV shows’ history. Millions of fans around the world constantly revise the adventures of the Dunder Mifflin employees.
However, few of them know that, back in 2010, NBC released a similar show about the hilarious office workers and the difficulties of managing them. Some Reddit users still hail it and complain about its rapid conclusion after one 22-episode season.
The series’ plot revolves around Todd Dempsy, an executive manager at Mid American Novelties, a company that sells novelty items of various degrees of uselessness. His calm life is turned upside down when he’s relocated to India to run an outsourced call center.
There Todd realizes that the employees are completely unaware of American popular culture, while he himself struggles to get used to Indian one.

A little over a year ago, Showtime announced that they were ordering a series – then known as Dexter: Origins, now known as Dexter: Original Sin – that would serve as a prequel series to their popular show Dexter, which finished its eight season initial run back in 2013, then recently came back for a new season (called Dexter: New Blood) that appeared to wrap things up for good… for the title character, anyway. Now Deadline reports that Patrick Gibson of Shadow and Bone has been cast to play a young Dexter Morgan in Dexter: Original Sin, with Christian Slater (Mr. Robot) joining him in the cast to play his dad, Harry Morgan, and Molly Brown (Senior Year) set to play Dexter’s younger sister, Debra Morgan.

[This story contains spoilers for Leave the World Behind.]
Sam Esmail’s Leave the World Behind currently ranks atop Netflix’s film chart, and longtime fans of the filmmaker are now decoding its place in his greater universe of storytelling.
Ten minutes into the thriller, Mr. Robot buffs likely picked up on a familiar site: a yellow emergency preparedness kit with the branding of the USA series’ villainous corporation, E-Corp. That bucket would serve as one of several early signals that a cyberattack would incite the film’s imminent disaster and systematic destabilization of the United States. Esmail had already wanted to make a disaster film that revolved around a cyberattack, and when he read Rumaan Alam’s novel, Leave the World Behind, he knew he could merge that idea with his existing universe of stories, not just Mr. Robot.
“It felt pretty natural, and to be honest with you, I didn’t just do it with Mr.

Sam Esmail‘s (Mr. Robot) big-budget sci-fi series Metropolis, based on the 1927 Fritz Lang movie of the same name, has been scrapped amid the ongoing writers strike and rising production costs. As reported by Deadline, the ambitious Apple TV+ series, which had been prepping in Australia, has been permanently shut down, with the crew being notified the project will not be moving forward. It isn’t that I don’t enjoy a good superhero show or movie, but I like it when Marvel gets playful with genre. It’s the reason I always say that my favorite film in the MCU is the first 45 minutes of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the part that’s basically a ’70s conspiracy thriller, before the action gets bigger and the tone becomes more conventional. I loved WandaVision at its meta-sitcom-y peak and thought Hawkeye was most charming as Marvel’s explosive take on a Hallmark holiday film.

Three decades ago, Christian Slater met Val Kilmer on the set of True Romance, the Quentin Tarantino-penned, Tony Scott-directed crime thriller. Slater played Clarence Worley, an Elvis Presley fanatic, while Kilmer portrayed the Mentor, an Elvis-like figment of Clarence’s imagination. Slater and Kilmer, who first made their names in the 1980s, would go on to work together another three times in the early 2000s, making their latest connection on Jonathan Kasdan’s Willow (2022) sequel series all the more fitting.
With Covid-19 restrictions preventing Kilmer from reprising his beloved rogue swordsman, Madmartigan, from Ron Howard’s 1988 film, Kasdan knew he needed another wildcard-type character that could bring a similar energy. So he created Allagash, a former knight and running mate of Madmartigan, and the first person he thought of for the role was Slater.

"The spirits – they want us to paint the invisible worlds!" Viaplay UK has revealed the first official trailer for Lasse Hallström's Hilma, the acclaimed Swedish filmmaker with a huge filmography. This hasn't played at any festivals, strangely, and will be arriving in the UK and in Sweden in October for anyone to watch. The film explores the incredible life of Swedish artist Hilma af Klint, who is now widely recognized as one of the Western world's first abstract artists. A story about an unwavering search for the truth about humanity and the universe at a time when men made all the rules. Hilma explores the enigmatic life of Hilma af Klint (1862-1944), whose unconventional and highly spiritual art remained fairly unknown for decades. Hilma boasts an outstanding female-led cast featuring Lena Olin, Lily Cole, and Tora Hallström, along with "Game of Thrones" legend Tom Wlaschiha and "Mr. Robot's" Martin Wallström.

The USA Network hacking thriller "Mr. Robot" is one of the best and most underrated dramas of the past decade. Initially, "Mr. Robot" seemed like a risky project. While writer-director Sam Esmail established his merits as a creator with his highly underrated feature film directorial debut, "Comet," he had yet to prove himself as the showrunner of a complex narrative series. Rami Malek was rising star thanks to his role on HBO's "The Pacific," but the character of Elliot Alderson was very different from anything that he had done before.
All of these concerns evaporated after the first season reached its conclusion. With its stylistic direction, relevant social themes, electrifying soundtrack, and shocking twists, "Mr. Robot" was unlike anything else on television. It seems closer to an arthouse film than anything. The show contains allusions to such classics as "Blade Runner," "The Matrix," "Pi," and "Taxi Driver." "Mr. Robot" continued...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “You Who Cannot See, Think of Those Who Can,” the Jan. 30 episode of “Euphoria.”
At the risk of writing too personally about a show that’s all about personal upheaval, I had wondered whether parenthood might turn me off “Euphoria.”
I was an admirer of the show’s first season, which aired in 2019, but after becoming a parent in 2020 I suspected that the show’s depiction of American teenagerhood as a broken-down garden of temptation might not intrigue me as it had once before. Certainly, I’ve felt an almost visceral sense of rejection of various works of art in which children are placed in peril over the past two years or so. And two special episodes that aired between the show’s seasons failed to compel me, leaning as they did almost entirely on style and flash. I wondered,...

One of the most chilling shows on TV has a return date.
Apple TV+ today unveiled a first-look teaser at the third season of the acclaimed Servant.
The 10-episode third season will debut with the first episode on Friday, January 21, 2022, followed by one new episode weekly, every Friday.
From executive producer M. Night Shyamalan, Servant follows a Philadelphia couple in mourning after an unspeakable tragedy creates a rift in their marriage and opens the door for a mysterious force to enter their home.
The new episodes pick up three months after Servant Season 2, with Leanne struggling to come to terms with the fact that no one has come looking for her.
She believes they will come looking eventually, while the Turners want to raise Jericho and move on with their lives.
Unfortunately, the past always comes back to haunt the characters on this show, so it's going to be a complicated chain of events.

In last night’s Last Week Tonight episode, John Oliver took a jab at White House Press Secretary Jennifer Psaki, who at a recent press conference equated the unpredictable political process in Washington to certain fictional television shows.
When asked what series the Biden administration would be like, Psaki replied, “Maybe The West Wing if something good happens? Maybe Veep if not?”
Oliver called out Psaki on her mischaracterization and had choice words for the creator of the Emmy Award-winning NBC show, Aaron Sorkin.
“Of course you want to be The West Wing. Every administration wants to be The West Wing,” Oliver remarked.
Describing the 2000’s serial political drama, Oliver called the show “American fan fiction written by a man drunk on liberal righteousness and weapons-grade cocaine.”
The British American comedian gave his take on the current state of the White House and designated it a more sordid comparison, likening...

Exclusive: Sean Penn came back to work today on Gaslit, Starz’s UCP-produced Watergate limited series he stars in with Julia Roberts.
Deadline revealed back in July that Penn had decided that with all the work his Core organization has done with Covid testing and vaccinations since the onset of the pandemic, he could not in good conscience return to work until everyone on the production had been vaccinated for the virus. Especially as the highly contagious Delta variant had just begun to rage seriously enough that Los Angeles had re-imposed indoor mask wearing, with cases among the unvaccinated spiking again at alarming levels across the country.
While the production continued to shoot without Penn, he and the studio finally reached a compromise. The entire crew he is working with today is vaccinated.

Youth is wasted on the young, but the Emmys might not be. “The Crown” duo Emma Corrin and Josh O’Connor are predicted to take home Best Drama Actress and Best Drama Actor Emmys, respectively, and if that happens, they’ll be one of the youngest pair of drama lead acting winners of all time.
Corrin is 25 and O’Connor is 31, making them practically zygotes compared to the ages of a majority of the acting winners. The good news for Corrin is that there has been a youth movement as of late in drama actress. Jodie Comer (“Killing Eve”) became the category’s youngest winner in 2019 at 26, dethroning Lindsay Wagner, who was 28 when she won for “The Bionic Woman” in 1977. Comer’s reign was short-lived as Zendaya, then 24, prevailed last year for “Euphoria.” Corrin, obviously, wouldn’t beat Zendaya’s record, but she’d be the category’s second youngest champ...

Evidently, this will be a season unlike any other, and it's exciting how In the Dark can keep viewers on our toes.
Some of the stylistic choices during the anxiety-ridden In The Dark Season 3 Episode 3 were impressive. They creatively and effectively set a specific mood and tone, and it feels like we're as much out of our depth as Murphy herself.
And hell, we haven't even delved into the horror show happening to Jess right now.
It'll sound odd, but there was something about this hour that gave off Mr. Robot vibes, and it worked so well with this type of series. From the bleak bus station experiences, the wintery brightness of Murphy's day trip from hell, and descending into that dark loneliness of night and her own mind playing tricks on her captured that vibe.
And some of the car ride discussions with Michael and the '80s, Ferris Bueller...

True-crime love story The Resort, from Palm Springs writer Andy Siara and Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail, has been ordered at Peacock.
The streamer has handed the series from UCP an eight-part order.
It first emerged in February 2020 that the pair were developing the scripted project at the Universal Studio Group division.
The Resort explores love and the weird things we do in the name of it, encased in an elaborate true-crime conspiracy, with each season set in a unique picturesque vacation destination. The first season takes place at an all-inclusive resort along the Mayan Riviera, when a married couple on the brink of divorce inadvertently becomes embroiled in one of the Yucatan’s most bizarre, unsolved mysteries that, somehow, is part metaphysical detective story, part Indiana Jones-esque adventure, part coming-of-age romance.
